This was an awesome instruction, I've played drums for awhile and have always had problems with getting my left leg to get in synch with my right while playing double bass, and thought I just couldnt do it as good as I wanted, and never actually thought about adding as as a have note to accompany.. I've been watching your vids for a few years and just became a subscriber cause I think you are an awesome drummer and love your covers of songs if tried to play and realized even though i thought i was a good drummer, I've still got a long way to go, thank you for these videos, please keep doing them... awesome talent my friend

Great tutorial! I've always had trouble playing double bass the traditional way too. I do it the same way you do. Can you do an A7X cover of The Stage?
Me too! 75% Right foot 25% Left foot. I also play with my left arm on hi-hat & right arm on snare but keep the traditional set-up rather than the hi-hat to the right of the snare so I'm not crossing sticks. It might look different but it's just easier for me.
I think a really good tip for helping your left leg not get so outdone by your right and working it out a little more it to start hitting the hi hat pedal every quarter or eighth notes (depending on the speed of the song) whenever possible ie when you're not hitting the hi hat. I noticed that on your Creating God cover a few days ago you didnt hit the hi hat pedal while playing the chorus or most other parts to keep the beat of the song which is understandable since you can barely hear it but i think a reason Brooks it so good at double bass is because using his left foot throughout every song from beginning to end really helped advance that leg. Just a tip i thought everyone should know

when i first started i was all about speed. my pedalling was good but overall play was dull and repetitive. i realized good playing was about how you incorporated each aspect of your drums into what you played.
The way i learned 12/8 double bass grooves and how to keep my double kicks consistent with my snare on top of my left foot is to do triplets with my hands and ghost notes on the parts that don't need to be emphasized. So basically you are playing the same exact partern as the bass drums but with your hands and only accenting the notes 1 and 4. Its not the proper way but it works for me
What you illustrate here is a perfect example of why people need to STFU about the "right" way to play something and the "wrong" way. The fact is, you produce the exact same sound and do so more comfortably with your method. Not only that, but by playing it in threes, you are actually developing a different level of dexterity in your feet that will help you master other patterns more easily than maybe others. I had problems with double bass for the longest time (for me too it's a bitch to master). I tried to play the "right" way (well, heels-up at least), but then one day discovered that playing one heel down eliminated the balance issues I was having, and suddenly, my double bass playing entered a new dimension. I now play a mixture of three different ways depending on the signature and tempo: both heels up, one heel up (the other down), or both heels down (harder to learn, but much more precise and easier to play once you master it IMO). And mind you, with no difference in volume. In fact, I can actually play louder with heel down because it allows me to let the beater travel backwards farther prior to the next hit. I'll post a video someday.
