      A Men ... I don't know... I don't feel particularly caucasian...
      To apply the term white to romans as something they identified as beyond just describing what they'd look like to us, is pretty stupid, as let's be honest I'm pretty sure europeans up until well into modern times wouldn't identify themselves as white. As a german identifying as white still ranks very low on the list of things I identify as.
      But I sure as hell, honest to god would never... ever identify as caucasian. The caucasus is a region somewhere between russia and Turkey. Geographically my family ties lie closer to north africa then to caucasia.
      Also considering that romans gave citizenship to people who were not ethnically latin or even italian... at that Roman citizenship was what made you roman... I don't think how true your statement that they were racist is.
      Sure they thought themselves superior, but I don't think it was a 'race-issue'.

    • @yelsavidaravskaja905
      @yelsavidaravskaja905 6 лет назад +1

      A Men Romans were still white. Especially the upper ruling class. Only the Sicilians and far-south italians of today can be considered half-white, since they’re a product of steady north-african migration over the last 2000 years.
      Fact is that the proper Romans were direct descendants of the indo-european Corded Ware culture, just like most of Europe.

    Btw, when "Caesar" says "Ask my kidnappers if i'm just a shit talker"... Storytime:
    In 75 BCE a band of Cilician pirates in the Aegean Sea captured him at the age of 25.
    Caesar simply refused to behave like a captive. When the pirates told him that they had set his ransom at the sum of 20 talents, he laughed at them for not knowing who it was they had captured and suggested that 50 talents would be a more appropriate amount. He then sent his entourage out to gather the money and settled in for a period of captivity.
    He made himself at home among the pirates, bossing them around and shushing them when he wanted to sleep. He made them listen to the speeches and poems that he was composing in his unanticipated downtime and berated them as illiterates if they weren’t sufficiently impressed. He would participate in the pirates’ games and exercises, but he always addressed them as if he were the commander and they were his subordinates. From time to time he would threaten to have them all crucified. They took it as a joke from their overconfident, slightly nutty captive.
    It wasn’t a joke. After 38 days, the ransom was delivered and Caesar went free. Astonishingly, Caesar managed to raise a naval force in Miletus and he set out in pursuit of the pirates. He found them still camped at the island where he had been held, and he brought them back as his captives. When the governor of Asia seemed to vacillate about punishing them, Caesar went to the prison where they were being held and had them all crucified.
    This man's charisma was OFF THE FUCKING CHARTS.

      WaterKingAnonymous cause both existed as established systems in Africa and France for verging on 800 years. And Gaul by far got the worst deal they saw “Africa” (NorthC) as cultured and not unlike themselves (except Carthage who ironically was almost exactly like them), they committed genocide and then sold the rest of the disobedient tribes into slavery til it put all their own citizen’s farms out of business- but slavery wasn’t hereditary and didn’t last more than 20 years and they had protected rights until it was banned. Pastiness or Gallic hair were looked down on or considered signs of being uncivilized in your stock, like the Noble Savage shit that got tossed around- it was mostly pointed north tho because Gauls sacked rome like 400 years before and scarred their civilization and ethnic prejudices for centuries.
      Also literally all of the wheat disses were because Shaka banned the production of wheat - their staple fucking food- because in his later years he literally was going crazy. Somehow they failed to include his own half brothers had to kill him cause of the devastation he was causing.
      Beyond the literal hundreds of hours of free, well produced and interesting information on both subjects you could just fucking look at their Wikipedia page for 5 seconds rather than expanding your sphere of ignorance.

Also the ending wasn't 'like' slavery, it was slavery, Rome enslaved there enemies quite often. Although there was nothing racist involved, if you lost you were put to work or to death, that's how Rome tended to do things, they were often an extremely practical people.

    And the line about "ask my kidnappers if I'm just a shit talker." is about how he mustered a fleet and hunted down and crucify every last one of the pirates that held him for ransom. A ransom he found insulting so he told them to raise it, which they did and then he killed all of them.

    The Zulu warriors were very powerful despite their primitive weapons. They had spears and wooden clubs that they used to great agility. Shaka developed a few battle formations that were unique for that time, one of them being something that resembled a bull's horns. The Zulu were also known for chewing a poisonous herb, mixing the toxins with their own saliva. The mixture was then spat into the eyes of the victims, blinding them. The herb was chewed outside of battle to allow the warrior to build a tolerance to it. The main drawbacks were the lack of lethality, and the short distance it could be fired.

    Ironic that Shaka said that about Julius being stabbed by his friends because he died by being stabbed many times by his own family lol.

  • @laughingskull4362
    @laughingskull4362 3 года назад

    The last line was was more of a reference to the fact that Shaka banned growing wheat after his mother died, and Rome also enslaved everyone they conquered.

  • @jordank7812
    @jordank7812 7 лет назад

    To add more insult for the last line from Julius , Shaka had banned all wheat crops after his mother was killed. And so his half brother killed him over Shaka going crazy . So I guess you could say they both were stabbed many times.

    If I remember after Rome beat you into the ground you’d send the majority of your crops to Rome for ten or twelve years and then they’re just like “well, your a Roman citizen now. Have fun with that.”

    In reality. the famous Zulu flanking method would get trampled by Roman cavalry. Fun facts.

    Ancient Rome was one of the largest empires in the ancient times. Their population was made up of 90 million/20% of the population back then while the Zulu were numbered at 12 million.

    Interestingly, the Zulu Empire was at it's height when the British were conquering Africa.
    In 1879, at the Battle of Isandlwana, despite the British army having the best rifles, canons, rockets, and calvary at the time, they lost to the highly trained and disciplined warriors of the Zulu.
    They eventually lost at the Battle of Rourke's drift (due to one Zulu commander being over ambitious and crossing a river that separated British South Africa with Zululand, now Swaziland).

    Enough people have commented on the last line being not as racist as many take it, sense the Roman's made "slaves" of almost everyone they conquered. But, it is also a reference to the fact that Shaka banned the growing of crops after his mother's death. Shaka's eradicate behavior after the death of his mother partly contributed to him being assassinated.

    I don't think they got the lines where Caesar said "First my front lines will drop back and spank you in the chest, then I'll decimate your horns, you can't outflank the best".

    Romans enslaved everybody, plus its also a personal jab as Shaka banned growing wheat after his mother died and he started going nuts.

  • @loqutor
    @loqutor 6 лет назад

    The last one wasn't a reference to slavery in general, or even enslaving war captives. It was an insult against Shaka in particular, since he banned the growing of wheat after his mother died in a wheat field.

    Actually North Africa was the bread basket of the Empire. It wasn't a reference to slavery per say. Yes many would be slaves but Africa did grow most of Rome's grain

    Romans enslaved defeated enemies so yes it was a slave reference but not racial.

  • @LucianFromEarth

    Romans (and most of the ancient conquering civilizations, such as the Israelites) used to take a lot of war prisoners as slaves and use them to work for them in exchange for keeping them alive. Most of them chose this fate as long as they were spared from death.

    Fun fact its already mentioned that romans made everyone they beat grow their shit, but its also a personal jab to Shaka zulu. Shaka zulu banned the growth of crops and so its funny that he should have to grow crops for someone else.

  • @xano2921
    @xano2921 6 лет назад

    The last line had 2 references:
    *After his mother death, Shaka Zulu banned everyone from cultivating wheat
    *The Romans used to enslave the enemy soldiers to work for them, so it wasn't racist at all.
    It was just a "double-quote" to history :)

    Shaka Zulu was hundreds of years ahead of Julius Caesar. Shaka 1787 - 22 September 1828 - Africa didn't climb the technology tree because for the same reason the Greeks couldn't either - war with each other. They never united so they were fairly easy to beat from an invading force. Rome had many cultures beat for centuries to come which is why so many politics and economic systems today are based on Rome.

    The Egyptians provided Rome with wheat, they had a contract with Egypt, not as slaves....but as a business....
