  • See dozens of historic photos of Reno, Nevada and new images of the same scenes in the same locations as the original photographer. These images were culled from digital images and old postcards that I have collected over the years. I ran around town over two days recreating the old images. Then we stop into Voodoo Brewing which has been open only a couple of months for a brief tour. For what its worth, I go to these beer places usually when they open so it's relatively quiet. They might look empty but this way you can hear and see the facility. Unfortunately on video you can't taste the great beers, but that is my job, your humble servant!

It's The Reno You Know! My name is Steve and I've lived in Reno, Nevada for 37 years (as an adult!). I've had a lifelong interest in historical topics, and spend much time exploring and researching this wonderful area of Northern Nevada. I started this channel to share some of what I've learned. I produced a full-length documentary film on the history of Harolds Club casino in 2015.
Perhaps you're thinking of moving to Reno and are looking for background on the area or reasons to move, or you're already a resident and this content might help give you a sense of place. I shall endeavor to cater to both groups!
I'm also a craft beer enthusiast, and thought I'd talk about some of that brewery scene here as well. I started homebrewing 31 years ago in 1992, and earned the Certified Cicerone designation in 2015 - this is a sommelier-esque program for beer people.
Please subscribe, share and come along with me on this journey! Thanks and cheers!
    Steve

Steve, I appreciate the memories! 1:47
I had totally forgotten about the Crest Theater from the 1950s to the mid-1960s. For me, the saddest changed downtown was the elimination of the Mapes Hotel on Virginia Street next to the Truckee River!

The effort in picking the right spot is amazing, great photos too. I shouldn’t be too disappointed with the way Reno seems to have grown and lost it’s old fun character. Progress is sometimes poison. Even in my lifetime when I was a kid in the early and mid 70s, my mother would come to Reno and Carson City to visit her brother and also to visit her money at the casinos. My mother would split up a roll of quarters between my brother and me and we were taken upstairs to play pinball games and the early Pong games.
    Thanks again for this episode.

omg i love this sort of thing. great job matching up the current spot to the historic shots! the one that surprised me most is the Caravan Motel -- i've never heard of it, and it's literally two blocks away from me. i had no idea it was there long ago. my personal takeaway is that the era of skyscraper casinos didn't really do our architecture any favors.

    • @SteveTRYK

I believe that the same support structure for the Caravan sign was repurposed into the Sticks sign seen today. Yes the 1970's - not the best era for architecture, car design, fashion... the 70's nailed it on music though!

@@SteveTRYK i think there was really some great cars and fashion (and of course music) in the 70s, and even some great architecture -- just not in the casino industry, haha.

One of the most entertaining slideshows I've seen! Most people wouldn't realize how difficult it is to replicate a photo with the same angle and perspective. I have a faint childhood memory of a unique restaurant... not sure if it was a standalone establishment or inside a casino (and maybe it was in Tahoe). It was a gigantic room with high ceiling and one of the walls was an entire mural of an outdoor western landscape. Ring any bells?

I must say that I find your videos to be very impressively done. I have done several in the Carson City area and other locations nearby and also one that I just recently did in Pahrump Nevada so you may have seen some of my work. We just recently had 100,000 subscribers but it took me six years to get there. Being that your videos are so nicely edited, I’m wondering if you are in the video production industry.

Ok- senior moment. There was a Basque Restaurant on Center in the middle of the block north of 2d , west side of the street. ( when it was called center all the way up to 9th) Anyone remember the name? I think it was Toacano or something like that.
Pretty good alternative to Louis’ as I recall.
