    In the 1970 and 80’s I was a Luxman Dealer. They offered a dealer great repair and replacement services. Very rarely did I need to use it. The products sold themselves in sound, looks and quality. The greatest difficulty was the availability of some of the tubes. The designer of the transformers was the founder of Esoteric Audio Research. We were dealers for his products also. The Luxman sound was crisp by with spaciousness only found with tubes valves) I did notice a change in quality with the Alpine takeover. Never a disaster just an inconvience to the customer. Your absolutely correct with the harmonic distortion,but very miusical that made some of the Luxman sell so well! We did not sell the turntables as the were in extremes of value from low to excessive in value! At the time we were allowed to”cherry pick” the line.

    Thanks for explaining that tube sound,I took my son a while back to guitar center,I told him to play guitar first on a solid state amp ,then a tube amp,after that he wouldn't play on a solid state amp again ,and I watched other customer do the same ,my son really doesn't no what a vacuum is I did my best to explain to him ,but he new what sounded good to him and most of the other customers.

    Wow, brings back some memories!! I remember Carver doing something like that, some type of tube pre-amp hybrid. I had a lot of fun playing around with tubes in the early 90's. Single ended triode, 300B was my second build, but the first was a 7951A Pentode, made from recycled parts given to me. Great video and I like the video quality. (The Sony 4k must be sweet!)

      The 4K is a beast to work with, New editing software to learn.
      Should be fun. As to the old school tubes, they have really made a comeback over the past few years. I use a Yaqin now, which is a really basic Chinese made full tube amp that sounds fantastic. I use this in my studio where I do my serious music listening. I figured that tubes would disapear, but they are still the choice of many audiophiles.

      It does have a very good sound. This amplifier was really expensive. I bought it in 2004 I think, and I paid about 2,200.00 it way back then, and that was a lot of money, especially for a 60WPC amplifier, but it had superior sound to most other amps I compared it to. It is my studio amplifier for my monitors, which are Altec Lansing 3 way studio monitors.

    Very nice gear. I have Luxman lv-101 (paired with nice vintage Braun/ADS Ls70 speakers) and it were 2/3 of the price of lv-103, but yet, it's very nice sounding. It's warm, musical and full of life. I think I will never gonna sell mine, I will have it till it die in my house on my sofa..

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 лет назад +2

      Yes I agree the Luxman units were well designed. Very good sound,a nd well built. I have yet to find an amp that sounds as good as this one. I wish I had sprung for the LV107U as that was the 105WPC Hybrid, the last one they made. These were very expensive amps mind you, and when I bought mine in 1984 it was over 2,000.00 and the higher powered units were even more. That was a lot of money for an amp back then.

    Valve amps ARE THE BEST in my opinion. Good stuff.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  9 лет назад +3

      +Reg Scriven Tube amps, also known as valve amps produce a different sound than solid state which to many people produce better sound.In reality this is not the case though, but the human ear is not perfect, and to many folks they sound nicer. Truth be known a tube amp is far from a clean amp. Early solid state amplifiers were quite dirty, and produced nasty odd order harmonic distortion, whereas tube amps produced even order harmonic distortion. By even order harmonics, all the frequencies are in phase and when they mix in the amplifier stages they give a warm fuzzy sound that is pleasing to the ears especially when it is an electric guitar, or a Hammond B3.Modern solid state amplifiers are exceptionally clean. You get out exactly what went in. If you put a pure sign wave in, you get a pure sign wave out, just a bigger signal. A valve on the other hand, once electrons fly past the control grid, and head to the plate, they can and do land in a random pattern, and this adds a slight bit of even order harmonic distortion that really adds warmth to the sound.I have solid state amp, 2 full tube amps, a modern amp, and a vintage Macintosh, and this Luxman LV102 hybrid. Out of the all the Lux is my favorite. In fact both my full tube amps are not even in use. Solid state amps have lots of current, whereas tubes do not, they are a voltage amp. When a tube saturates you get tons of even order harmonics and distortion, and depending on if you are using solid state or tube rectification sag. If you are a guitar player you want this. As a HiFi amp, you don't because you are listening to more than a guitar. This is why I prefer the Hybrid.I get the all the benefits of the tube preamp stage, that is the even order harmonics that warms up the sound tremendously, but because the output stage is MOSFET there is LOTS of current, and excellent speaker dampening that a solid state amp delivers, and pretty much instant recovery. It is hard to describe in words, all I know is it doesn't matter what I listen to, be it vinyl, analog tape, CD, Digital tape or even crappy MP3s the hybrid amp is clearer on every source, followed by the modern Chinese tube amp, then the vintage MacIntosh and all the solid state amps behind that. I have done careful listening in my studio, and after not using the Luxman for several years when I was on my 100% tube eargasm, I connected the luxman to test it out after servicing it when I did this video, and was blown away by the sound, and fell in love with it again, banishing my tube gear to the living room when it just looks pretty sitting atop a stand. Its a great conversation piece, but in my studio the 30+ year old Luxman is my main amp.

      Thank you for the explanation, i worked as a tv repair man back in the 70's to 80's. +Reg Scriven Yes same here. I was in the business from basically 79 till 2003.I started my apprentice when I was still in high school, by 83 I had by certificate in electronics proficiency. Worked in the consumer electronics repair business full time from 84 to 2003. It was on my 40th birthday I work up early. I was used to getting a call from my mother at 5:47 in the morning to wish me a happy birthday. (yes I dam near busted a gut when I first saw the movie "City slickers" when Billy Crystals character gets the phone call in the middle of the night from his mother to wish him a happy birthday. I was just sitting there in the dark, and my wife work up and asked me what I was doing, and I said to her, I am done as a technician. I could see how technology was going and I didn't like what I saw made that decision that I had to do something else as I knew there was no future in electronics repair. Within 3 months I was out of that business, and into a completely different industry. One that others had said was a dead industry, but you know what, the phone company has been very good to me for the past 11 years, and it isn't going away anytime soon. We might not be installing phones as much as before with technology changes, but high speed internet and IPTV content delivery is going like gang busters, with no end in sight. I have seen ADSL come in, then fiber to the corner with last mile VDSL, and now fiber to the house is getting going, as the demand for more and more bandwidth just explodes. Now the electronics servicing side of things is just a hobby, but I have lots of knowledge in this field to share.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  6 лет назад

      It is the best sounding amp I own. Needs some work to be done on it as it goes into protection once in awhile, and the phono preamp isn't working, but that will be address in a future video.
      I still remember the day I bought it at 2001 sound center in Burnaby. I paid 1999.95 for it back in 1984. In todays money that would be about 4800.00 give or take a few $.
      The salesman was pushing the LV105 as it had an additional 20 WPC, but it was also 400.00 more, and back in 84 I was making only about 10.00 per hour as a technician. I was taking home after tax probably 1300 a month if I was lucky, and was living in an apartment I could barely afford at 400.00 per month. (Remember back in 84 minimum wage here in Canada was only something like 3.15 per hour) The thing that makes this amp sound so good is the 2 technologies. The 2 tubes, which are dual triodes give the warm tube sound. They are what makes this thing sound as good as it does. The power section uses almost indestructable (and now obsolete) power MOSfeT transistors, which are very low impedance devices. It is happy down to 4 ohms. I run a pair of Altec Lansing 305 6 ohm speakers on it. The mosfet transistors have incredible damping factor, and that results in mice, tight powerful bass. Luxman was I believe the first company (I may be wrong) to design and build a hybrid amp, which of course is now done by many companies including high end companies like PS audio. Full tubes amps look cool, and they sound good for sure, but this bad boy sounds every bit as good, and has much better speaker damping than any tube amp, as the output transformer on a tube amp doesn't do much to damp out what the speaker kicks back on hard punchy bass drum thumps. For that reason, I perfer the sound of this one when listening to loud jazz or rock. For background listening where the volume isn't cranked, my home built class A tube amp has an even warmer, more satisfying sound.

    Good vid mate, love those Luxman boom boxes, one thing about 4k is I can see how grubby and disorganised your garage is, but you know where everything is, right? :>) ...I wonder if a macro lens would assist with close up zooms on that camera?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  10 лет назад +1

      This isn't 4K. It is 1080p at 60 FPS.
      4K won't be for the repair vids, but for scenery vids that I will be shooting to showcase my travels, and the Vancouver area. Some people shoot stills for their hobby, I would rather tell the story in video. I already have ideas for a project, just waiting for the right conditions. The repair vids will continue to be done in 1080, and many are done on my old tape based broadcast camera just due to the speed advantage editing. 4K is very slow due to the processing power it takes to do anything.
      As to the mess in my garage, most of that isn't my stuff. The kids, and wife just dump their old coats, and boxes of crap (that DELL box that is in the shot for example is my daughters computer box. Everyone thinks my garage / workshop is their personal storage area. When spring cleanup comes it will all be going, this time for sure. I said that last time, and totally forgot what day it was and worked that weekend.

    Lux only makes tube equipment under special request nowadays.
    Sony's US$11,000 C-800G tube microphone is the workhorse of some of the finest recording studios around the world; it uses a specially selected NOS 6AU6 tube which is cooled with a Peltier element, and unfortunately for those who have them they made it very hard to replace.

    I have a fault on my LV105. With Bass tone control "in use" the Bass tone control very noisy and results in throwing high volume/ DC to speakers. The amp trips out when it does this but resets. It could be a solder joint etc but wondering if can still buy the pot and if easy to replace? Alternative is I sell it on.

    Mine also has the Ontario hydro sticker on the back.
    I have a bad To-92 style 2sc2320 on the power supply / protection board. Can you recommend a good replacement for that transistor? are these circuits forgiving when it comes to transistor? If I have to, I can take a 2sc2320 from the phono board and use it on the power supply and put the replacement on the phono board, what would you do?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  10 лет назад

      I don't have a cross reference book handy these days, but you can look up the specs online. If it is just a small signal transistor used for switching there will be a tone of replacements you can use. Just make sure your voltage and current rating are at least as high as the original.

      fortunately I found some instructions on the net to open the front panel. It's divided into two parts the upper part is harder to open because it has latches. But if we pull it forward carefully it will be safe. And it's easier to change the tube fron the front I think. But now mine is in trouble too. It produces loud hissing sound whenever I press the tone in button.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 лет назад +4

      The tubes (valves) in the lv103 are only being used as buffer tubes, to warm up the sound, and introduce the even order harmonics that make these units sound so good. Since they are not putting much power through them they last a long, long time. Mine are original tubes, been running since 84 when I bought it, and my amp gets LOTS of use. I leave the preheat turned ON to keep the tubes warm, as that prevents thermal stress on the filiments and cathode from expansion / contraction, That also greatly improves the life.The tubes are readily available anyway, as are most audio tubes, as they still make tubes. High end amps use them. My living room amp is a full tube unit.

    Anybody ever hear of an amplifier made by VSP labs? They were produced "hand made" meaning all components were manually soldered and put together by a assembler tech. No assembly line!! They were by many audio savvy people rated as top notch amps that had the warm clear sound of tube amps. The company had only one location based in Ann Arbor Mi. The big problem now, is that certain semiconductor components were discontinued and unavailable many years ago. The company went out of business many years ago as well.

      +service1956 Haven't heard of them, but have STL. (Space tech labs)STL is a high end boutique amplifier manufacture in Vancouver BC Canada, and they build all their amps by hand. They also only sell direct from the factory, so no retail outlets, no middlemen. Price is high, but you get what you pay for, and I have heard their amps, and it was unbelievable. Mine you the system I heard cost more than what I paid for my house but....

    just thought I would pass it on to you that I myself am not a fan of the high frame rate, make the picture jump

      Picture shouldn't jump on HFR. It is actually smoother than low frame rate, but youtube sometimes down samples to 30FPS.
      I have found that if I render out my old AVCHD camera into MP4 the picture is not as clear, so I normally render out in MPG2. The new camera has AVCHD-S and it is already playing havoc with my editing software.
      I have yet to try 4K shooting as I am unable to even play that on my computer yet, and I have a very fast machine, an i7 with 16 gigs ram, and over 10Tb of local storage. Will have to find a codec for my player.
