    I recently serviced a LV-103U, somewhat beefier version of this one but same output stage with same transistors.
    You can use IRFP240 and IRFP9240 to replace the Toshibas but the resistor in bias-curcuit has to be adjusted, from 380R to 150-220R and bias them to around 35-40mV measured over the 2x0.22R (mpc)
    I had multiple more components blown too, couple of zeners, one sc2240 and 2 resistors plus the MPC then.
    More power now and better sound overall.
    Tubes can be replaced with Russian 6n5P for even better sound.
    I recommend in this series of Luxman amps that all caps to be replaced.
    This amps is getting hot. I added extra heatsinks to most transistors to avoid further damage to the boards.
    Btw, my identical switches has be been working ok but tonecontrols and balance, was very noisy. Some WD-40 contact cleaner solved that.
    Thanks a lot for your videos. Big greeting from Finland!

      Good to know subs available as originals are not. My amp has been retired now replaced with a Technics SU-V9. More inputs, more power. I miss the sound of the luxman. It sounded fantastic.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 года назад +3

      I changed all the ones in the power supply and audio path except the 4 red ones which I couldn't get. After changing them I checked the old ones and they were all fine.
      The unit sounds great. Changing caps is overrated. You might think it sounds better it's a psychological thing. I was involved many years ago in a blind test of a restored vs a non restored amp.
      Same music was played at the same volume over the same speakers. Everyone on the panel, about 40 people were asked to pick the amplifier that had been rebuilt with new audiophile grade capacitors. There was several parts to the test, and nobody knew which amplifier they were listening to. Nobody got it right. Half thought the expensive modded amp sounded better and the other half thought the old stock amp sounded better when they could not see which amp had 1000 in special audiophile caps and really expensive interconnect cables. However 100% picked the rebuilt amp when they could see it.
      Now when the rebuilt amp was put on test equipment there were measurable differences in distortion and frequency response curves however nobody got it right using their ears when they did not know what they were listening to.
      Now if someone brings me an amp and says recap it, price is not a concern I will find the most expensive parts and go to town (after getting a sizable deposit) but those customers don't exist. All my customers say fix it as cheap as you can and not a dollar more.

As for your long detailed videos, just keep them coming. I've learned much from them but I also often play them at 1.25x or even 1.5x. Works for me, thanks!

    Love your vids and am a subscriber. I really appreciate all the detail, so the length of the video is no issue. I have always had a soft spot for Luxman audio equipment and in the seventies bought an R1500 receiver/amplifier along with a Linn Sondek turntable and JBL 4311 studio monitors. We STILL have the JBL speakers in our lounge room and still love the sound! This is just a small detail, but I am happy to hear you pronounce the word 'solder' as 'solder' and not 'sodder' as I hear so much on other videos. I guess it's what we grew up hearing, but I thought other presenters had a speech defect saying 'sodder'. Greetings from Australia.

    Hi my repairman friend dont worry every transistor ever made is a replacement for but most likely these amps are built so that they wil not blow up, if they do please send me its worth fixing them. I had a verry nice sherwood amp with a blown out end stage and after some searching and calculating found a new matching set buildt it in and eeeeh some more failures had to be fixed but after 6 attemps the machine is working nice again with the full sound of real transistors.:)

    The Lv-105 retailed for $700 USD in the late 1980's. I remember lusting after one of these at a local shop called "Sight and Sound" ...when I was a teenager. Though I have to say
    I found a Technics integrated recently at Goodwill for $8 and recapped it with top dollar caps (Mundorf for power supply filters) and this guy sounds great. Has Sanyo STI chip and
    transformer is bigger then the Lv103's! (Technics SU-V78 - was sold as part of a modular system and built mostly of plastic el cheapo) But powering my Yamaha NS-1000M's it sounds absolutely amazing, a true sleeper. My main (2) power amplifiers are mosfet based, by LFD (multiple $$$$).

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 года назад

      By the late 80s the price probably came down as it had been discontinued however in Canada the 103 sold for 1999.95 and if push came to shove I probably still have the sales receipt because I file all my purchase receipts and have a file cabinet full of them, so i could probably find it. As to recapping an amp that is a total waste of money. Something amateurs do, or crooked audio techs to pad the bill. Take a look at the caps that came out of my luxman. They are all perfect. No capacity lost and better esr than new cap rating. In reality very few caps ever fail on amplifier and when they do you will know it. You will either get severe distortion or ac hum.
      Modern amplifiers are all direct couples so there are no capacitors in the audio chain to go bad. You have your main filters and that is about it. When a filter fails you hear it right away.
      If a tech tells you that you need to recap, he is doing it to make more money. Honest techs will never upsell caps. Ever.

    • @Sans_Solo_
      @Sans_Solo_ 4 года назад

      Hi Dave, Love your channel for sure, been watching for years. I respectfully disagree with you regarding recapping (given it’s a good unit you like and intend to keep). It’s not about if the 30 year old electrolytic is within spec and working....it’s about replacing Then with superior, better sounding, state of the art capacitors. I am definitely of the camp that can here a huge difference Within about 1 week after a full recap. Common knowledge electrolytic’s have a life range unlike say film caps. Have done all my vintage equipment with amazing results. It does cost a lot of $$$ And time but worth the investment. Just finished my BGW 203 preamplifier ($600 in caps and resistors) Sounds incredible. Kevin

    There was actually no need to drill holes in those switches to get cleaner in. The plastic where you drilled the holes is only fixed to the body of the switch towards the front, so you can use a fine scapel to lever up this pastic tongue just enough to get your straw in. It will then click back into place when you are done.

When powering up, one channel would fry the output transistors and their caps.I was able to borrow a vari-ac and tried powering up at 60VAC.Nothing fried and audio was present. So I increased the power by 5VAC each time I powered up and all was good up to 115VAC. Audio was crisp and clean. At this point I set the vari-ac to 116VAC and it started to get warm so I shut it down. However if I were to fire it up at 120VAC it would fry the Transistors. Could you just tell me where I should look to find the problem. Thanks for your time.

      The input switches is the biggest problem with these and the overly sensitive protection circuit. Crank it too high and it will trip the protection and up u lose your sound until you turn it down. So for driving the speakers to their extreme, no this is not the amp for you. For normal listening levels the sound is fantastic. Sounds just like a tube amp with more kick at the low end.

    Have you ever tried that tip cleaner/tinner it comes in a little tin make tip last long time , but I dont do anywhere , near the amount of soldering you do , now that I have bought a Hakko tips are much more expensive. My 898D tips were only about a dollar a piece .are hybrid amps. More expensive.

    Personally i'd have the Technics SU series amp you recently repaired over this Luxman, as you probably are aware being in the industry this was designed/built by Alpine just the build quality alone from your overview camera shot makes it look cheaply made not up to the former quality of previous designed/built by Luxman Corporation products. But if you enjoy it that's all that matters and how it sounds, not my opinion.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  4 года назад +3

      This was from the alpine/luxman era for sure. This was one of the first ones they released and even though it might not be to the same standards that their legacy components were, it has lasted 35 years with little trouble other than the input switches and a couple of leaky Elna caps. It has been abused for many years driving altec lansing 6 ohm speakers and never once complained. Now I have the suv9 in its place and I am quite happy with its performance. The suv9 has more than twice the power. This one however has that warm tube sound. I'll put a tube buffer on the technics and see how it sounds.

      Not that i am aware of. That's the problem with old electronics. Old parts made of the mineral ubobtanium. Similar to germanium with with characteristics closer to silicon. Unfortunately the earth has run out of ubobtanium these days. Helium is next.

    know what kills me is when you can see inside the unit and its so dusty. could that be some of the problem?...every channel that i watch they ll have a dusty piece of equipment. its like oh its just dust doesnt affect anything. that not true dusty becomes conductive over time.

    Looks like a good amp but i dont think it is 2000$ worth just cause it has a tube pre amp dose not mean it shuld be super expinseve. The construction of this amp is not worth 2000$. Now it is a nice amp with desint sound quality and serviceability is a solid b+ but the over all construction is about tipical of equipment from the late 70s-mid 80s. Same quality as my jvc amp. So i would Price it 1200$usd to 1400$usd.

      That is YOUR opinion. These sold in Canada for over 2000.00 for this model, and the LV105 was 2400.00. Since they were sold at the specialty dealers, the same ones that sold Quad, Wharfdale, Linn, Keff, Nakamichi ect. There were no discounters selling these pieces. If you wanted one you bought it from the dealer and paid the price they were sell for of you didn't buy it simple as that.
      I have no idea what they went for in the US, but I would imagine if currency exchange was accounted for, it was probably similar. Back when this was new a 20" Sony trinitron TV with stereo sound sold for over 1000, and a VHS Hifi VCR was also well north of 1000.00.
      I could have bought a Sony TAN77ES for less, and should have. The guy I worked with bought a few of them, and is laughing now because he recently sold one for 3000.00
      It probably was around 1400 US at the time as that would have converted to around 2000 Canadian.
      I remember how much I paid, and was given a bad time by the guys I worked with because we were big Sony dealers, and had just been rewarded the ES franchise. I did buy some Sony gear. I have a TC75ES and CDPX555ES cd player. The only reason I bought this was because of the hybrid design. I heard the sound once and had to have it. Once you hear a good hybrid or full tube amp you will understand.
      If you haven't experienced the sound quality of a MOSFET output hybrid or a full on tube amp, there is no reason to explain, because it is falling on deaf ears, so to speak. The tube amp people out there are all nodding their heads now in agreement.
