The Tacoma TRD off-road in the access cab configuration would have been cheaper, and about $10k less than the trd pro. The front skid plate on the TRD pro is aluminum.
I would spend and did spend the extra $10,000 to have peace of mind of reliability. Nissan is not known for reliability at all. Hell they have been known to have one of the worst transmissions.
The trd skid plates are also aluminum, not steel. And I’d argue the Toyota crawl control is still the best out of any brand and the jerking back and forth makes it better off road when you are trying to get over bigger rocks and that jerking really helps the Toyota trucks find and catch it’s footing slippery terrain or climbing over stuff and getting you out of situations. A
I test drove both and I felt that you got more bang and more comfort for your buck with the Nissan. It did everything the TRD Pro could do for almost 20k cheaper, here in the states.
You could buy the trail edition, locking diff it has a 1 1/2 inch lift and way cheaper than the TRD, if cost is a issue, or a off road model too. The crawl control is noisy but, the new Tundra is a new system and quiet, the new Tacoma and 4Runner will be updated soon so I see why they would wait to upgrade that, not very cost efficient at the end of the model life. ,
What a great video, guys! Always love your enthusiasm and authenticity. Hope we get to run into each other one of these days. Love your content! Keep up the excellent work. 🙌🏻
The trd skidplate is quarter of an inch thick aluminum, while the sound of the crawl control might not be up to the rest of the manufacturer's, it does still work, which is the whole idea of it. It's funny how back then everyone was so impressed with it, and in a lot of cases, still impresses
It was really cool seeing you guys tackle a different set of terrain in the Minden off-road park, in addition to your own, and I believe you nailed the comparison and the verdict on these two trucks!
Nice video! Thanks for doing this. I bought the 22 pro in electric lime, manual transmission. I love it. Who needs crawl control when you have 1st gear in 4LO!
I have yet to see any other brands' crawl control equivalent get you unstuck like I've seen the toyota system work. It's not supposed to be quiet or comfortable, it's an off road feature. From observation I would still say it functions better than other systems for its intended purpose. I think it's a good tool to get unstuck more so than "cruise control" for off road. Nobody really used those systems that way that I've seen in the real world.

2021 4Runner owner - My truck allows you to run one of the MTS modes in 4H. The least aggressive one. I think it's called mud/sand? I run it in the winter when I'm in deep snow and it works great! You sure the Tacoma doesn't allow it? EDIT: I stand corrected. Just confirmed in the user manuals of both the 4Runner and Tacoma. The MUD & SAND mode can be used in 4H on the 4Runner but must be in 4L on the Tacoma. Very strange!

I sold it to a friend three years ago and he still has it with 250,000 miles on it. It runs like a top and has never needed any repairs other than a left rear axle. Original starter alternator and everything else under the hood. Toyotas are not the only reliable vehicles on the road.
@@OverlandOrange I don’t think it was luck. The 5.4L 2V motor was awesome and the vehicle was garage kept with religious oil changes and regular maintenance.

I mean many people rather have older and simple its a offroad truck or truck per say its not suppose to be fancy just get a pavement princess if thats what you want.
Just received my 2022 Frontier Pro-4X Crew Cab and did some trails with it here in Utah. Definitely more worth the money after dealer fees are incorporated into the pricing. Toyota dealers want $20,000 on top of MSRP and Nissan wanted a standard markup. Far and away more worth it to get the Frontier. Now, a year from now if the market cools down and prices become regular again, Tacoma may be the clear winner. But as the market stands, get a Frontier plus a lift and STILL save $16,500 over a Tacoma. Both are great trucks, no doubt.
@@MiK3Y13I am looking for a New truck myself. Could buy either. But I would take the Nissan all day and I just might buy a new one next year. Had my friends 2023 Tacoma for a week and not impressed at all. While I was definitely impressed with the frontier on test drive.
I bought a 22 frontier pro 4x. And I love the damn thing!! My only gripe is the intelligent braking system. I believe that it's a little 'dramatic'. Thoughts?
Great video. After test driving both as a daily driver , I’m going Frontier. Better power band and transmission as well as better fuel economy, which I tested. Both make reliable trucks but for bang for the buck and overall ergonomics and long term use. I think the Frontier is a tad better. Nissan doesn’t get enough credit for their motors. The 5.6 as well as the former 4.0 litre are Bulletproof. Always like the appearance of the TRD Pro but just not behind the wheel as much.
I'm doing a 3 inch lift on my 2022 Pro 4x (In Tactical Green Metallic) that I just picked up - seems the right height for me, was going to do 4 inches but then it wouldn't fit in my garage! Compared to the Taco's on Toyota dealers lots here with $10-15k market adjustments I'm in the Pro 4x (Which unfortunately I still had to pay a $5k above MSRP market adjustment) for almost $20k USD less than the Taco... that's a lot of upgrades.
@@Falinzin This is exactly the info I was hoping to see. I know the video compared stock models, but it does seem like a Pro 4x with a lift kit and a shock upgrade, if it could be done for the difference in price to a TRD Pro, would be a great vehicle.
I already bought the Tacoma and was wondering if I should upgrade the tires. I am impressed with how much those stock tires can get through. I know they dont have the sidewall protection of a KO2 but the traction is impressive.
I agree the crawl control system makes a lot of noise and isn't the smoothest, but it gets the job done, so I don't see the problem with it. You can reach up and increase its speed with the knobs a bit and it won't do this lurching. The lowest setting is useful only when you really need to be that slow. If you look at the Ford Ranger (at least the 2020 and 2021 model years), the crawl control doesn't go down to this speed. Personally, I don't care as long as it works.
Tacoma is better off road but I'd put my money on the Nissan because I don't go offroad but 10% at most. Also I could add larger tires later for clearance and still be well under the price of the TRD PRO Tacoma.
Turning radius has ALWAYS been a problem for Frontiers. Hard to believe Nissan hasn’t improved that. I have a 2011 Suzuki Equator (rebadged frontier) & the turning circle is a real pain in the a**. Especially for parking in tight lots.
Problem is all nissan did was put a new cab on a old fram. I would like to have seen a all new fram to match the new cab. The nissan looks awesome but its still has all the same problems that I hated on my 2017. The turn radius and open diffs. I loved my 2000 era frontier. Only thing that truck needed was more power lol. Give me that light weight nimble truck with the new 3.8 engine and 9speed.
@@dontderockmerizz3211 Yeah I am a tough guy and could probably kick anyone's ass in a street fight and I don't care what a turning radius is on a truck. Buy a Prius.
Hands down between the creature comforts inside and the bang for the buck I'm all in for the Nissan frontier it's cheaper and you can do a lot of upgrades for 10 grand price difference plus the 9 speed keeps the frontier from searching for a gear when pulling hills and the bed isn't lined with plastic it's a steel bed that you can have line x sprayed in.
Both solid trucks. I currently own a TRD off road. I also had an older frontier I traded in but over you can’t go wrong in either. I do give the off-road win to the Tacoma though.
Totally right, the Frontier because it has the better powertrain and in my opinion has a better interior and better looks, the frontier can do anything the tacoma does offroad just maybe with a little drama and it is like the better tacoma just not as good offroad in some situations but you can fix those little offroad issues
@@francislegayada1783 A 2-3" lift and some bigger tires for the Frontier solve all of it's problems too... that's maybe $3-4k total, if you put $3-4k into the Tacos powertrain it's only going to be pushing what the Frontier is stock, and you can't solve that jerky transmission either.
The TRD off-road model has no hoodscoop and is the one to get. exhaust reroute and flat mid skid is a must if you're going to be doing serious wheeling in your taco. The clearance on my taco shocks me every time i go out. crawl control is a gimmick on every brand.
I have a 2023 Pro-4X. First of all, yes I wanted a Taco-Pro. The price difference was huge. In Texas we didn't suffer as much from the whole dealer "market adjustment" scams so you could get decent deals on trucks. I replaced my 2002 Silverado 4X4 5.3 Vortec. The old girl has 235K miles and now my son drives it. The Pro-4X was much cheaper with way more options. I love my little truck, but...that beautiful front end design on the Taco is just magnificent IMO. Just not worth the extra funds for a weaker drive train. Also the fully enclosed box frame and armor work on my Nissan is top notch! But damn the old Taco is sexy! But honestly, those Fox Shocks while not as good on the road are great off road! However my Nissan does handle way better on pavement. Give and Take situation I guess. I also don't have to worry about salted roads, so spray some WD-40 on the underside and good to go man!
I have to agree with you on the locker only being available in 4 low. My 20 Ram 1500 with the offroad package can be locked in any mode including 2 wd. Something Toyota needs to address.
Locker or no Locker, Toyota buyers will be loyal to the brand due to it’s reliability better re-sale value things that unfortunately Dodge does not currently offer.
I think the Frontier is actually underrated because when it first came out, people were excited for a little bit but after a couple of weeks the hype went down, when the tacoma came out in 2016 it was super hyped up and i think over hyped because the hype of the tacoma is pretty much still there and I would choose the Frontier because it has the better powertrain and in my opinion has a better interior and better looks, the frontier can do anything the tacoma does offroad just maybe with a little drama and it is like the better tacoma just not as good offroad in some situations

The nissan frontier doesn't compete with the trd pro though. It be better to compare it to the trd off road access cab. That is it's direct competitor, it even has the same shocks.
You're really saying the opposite of what every other reviewer I've seen say about these. The others all say the Frontier is better than the Tacoma in nearly every way possible.
For this test to be fair you would compare the Pro4x vs the normal TRD but since you didn't just add the nismo 2 inch lift and then this would be an even match up with 8k still in your pocket with a much better power train and overall better truck being the the Nissan hands down.
@@scott8238 we're talking small trucks, not half ton. Sorry, no checkmate. In your defense though, Nissan still offers a naturally aspirated V8, which might last as long or maybe longer than the shitty tt v6 in the tundra.
I like the video and comparisons, but the other point I want to add is that the TRD Pro is also a full 4 door truck, while the Nissan Frontier King Cab is only a 2 door. That also accounts for some of the large price differential between the two trucks. If you want a closer price point to the Frontier, and still a rugged, off-road truck, you can get the TRD Off-Road Access Cab for cheaper, and some of the Pro options are offered as upgrades to the Off-Road Model. I will say, for interior comfort, Toyota kind of lags behind competitors. The manual trans also helps avoid some of the jumpiness and awkward shifting of the automatic system.
I’d take the Nissan any day for the money. You can always improve the ground clearance and approach/departure angles and the tires/suspension with aftermarket options. I also prefer Nissans hill descent system, as I have no need to offroad cruise on relatively flat surfaces. For the difference in price and the better powetrain, breaks, and underbody protection, I’m taking the Frontier, hands down.
Awesome Video! I have a a TRD with crawl control and it works great! it makes noise for certain, however i use it when i need it. Its rare that i use it, in fact i can't remember ever like cruising with it on a little muddy road. I use it to get out of being stuck and very slow technical situations. Nissan Shock mounts are higher than the rear diff at least you don't need to put a spare tire kit in the Bed where your gear/load is to be placed.
The answer is to get the Frontier and do whatever lift you want, no matter the price, and it will still be cheaper than the Tacoma. A small lift would fix every gripe you had with the Frontier. It is a lot easier to swap the suspension on the Nissan than it is to swap the power train and fix the sight lines on the Tacoma.

I test drove both and I felt that you got more bang and more comfort for your buck with the Nissan. It did everything the TRD Pro could do for almost 20k cheaper, here in the states.
20k cheaper? the dealer I'm getting my Tacoma from sells trd pro tacomas for msrp which is around 47k
@@W0RLDSSMALLESTVI0LIN In this market? Used 2020 tacos are selling for 60k. Brand new TRD pros all have a 10k+ USD market adjustment.
@@W0RLDSSMALLESTVI0LIN ummm you must not be looking at a trd pro
@@Falinzin No, they don't. The dealer I got my TRD offroad sells strictly at MSRP. They just sold 3 TRD Pros for under 50k.

I've always thought the pro-4x was more on par with the trd off road would love to see that comparison?
Agree, more equal comparison, both have bilstein shocks and stock suspension height.
You could buy the trail edition, locking diff it has a 1 1/2 inch lift and way cheaper than the TRD, if cost is a issue, or a off road model too. The crawl control is noisy but, the new Tundra is a new system and quiet, the new Tacoma and 4Runner will be updated soon so I see why they would wait to upgrade that, not very cost efficient at the end of the model life.
,
Agree, the trail eddition seems like the sweet spot for the Tacoma. Plus it looks great too.
It's funny how back then everyone was so impressed with it, and in a lot of cases, still impresses
well I don't think it was ever meant to sound good.
Moreover...the crawl control system in the Tacoma is PROVEN RELIABLE
It was really cool seeing you guys tackle a different set of terrain in the Minden off-road park, in addition to your own, and I believe you nailed the comparison and the verdict on these two trucks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice video! Thanks for doing this. I bought the 22 pro in electric lime, manual transmission. I love it. Who needs crawl control when you have 1st gear in 4LO!
1st gear is for rock only but hard
Also no demonstration on pro
I have yet to see any other brands' crawl control equivalent get you unstuck like I've seen the toyota system work. It's not supposed to be quiet or comfortable, it's an off road feature. From observation I would still say it functions better than other systems for its intended purpose. I think it's a good tool to get unstuck more so than "cruise control" for off road. Nobody really used those systems that way that I've seen in the real world.
Agreed 100% you are spot on
Yea I’m unsure why he wants to go so fast in “crawl” mode haha
He didn’t say it didn’t work it’s just not as good as every other manufacturer.
@@lukepotosky4853 I know, I'm saying it works better than other manufacturers'. It's may not be as comfortable or quiet, but it's got better off road functionality.
Just bought a 2022 tacoma trd off road. Cannot wait to pick it up in 3 days. Had a 09 tacoma base model i bought in 2010 wit 12k miles on it. Got into an accident last month and it got totalled with 263,000 miles on it an was running strong
Will test mine, Tacoma TRD 4x4 premium.
Probably programming considering they are very similar parttime 4wd modes
Niceeee. Thanks for sharing this new trail. I want to head down there this weekend with my Ford Ranger
Love the Tacoma…but due to how old it is I seriously have trouble justifying its cost! Jeezzzz
IMO it's just a powertrain upgrade away from being near perfect.
@@OverlandOrange I understand that buddy but in 2004 I bought a Ford Expedition NBX model which was the off-road package of that year.
I have a 21 TRD off road, with the TRD lift and a standard transmission. Saved $8k vs buying the pro and has all the same tech and upgraded suspension. I’ll take that manual transmission all day everyday vs the frontier for the same cost.
I mean many people rather have older and simple its a offroad truck or truck per say its not suppose to be fancy just get a pavement princess if thats what you want.
Love this YT channel. As always, great work. Taco is awesome but it’s due for a healthy revision with some more modern technology.
Great video in comparison and loved your guys' energy! New subscriber!
Taco hands down 💁♂️ it’s a no brainer has been for decades…there’s a reason for that. 💁♂️
Taco transmissions are garbage and the truck is made for midgets.
Amazing how many companies have copied the front cutouts for the approach angle of the ZR2.
Both are great trucks, no doubt.
of course you would say that when you bought one. gotta justify it somehow
@@MiK3Y13I am looking for a New truck myself. Could buy either. But I would take the Nissan all day and I just might buy a new one next year. Had my friends 2023 Tacoma for a week and not impressed at all. While I was definitely impressed with the frontier on test drive.
@@toma.6942 sure some people will it. There’s an ass for every seat. But by large numbers it’s the best selling for a reason
@@MiK3Y13 I understand your point. But researching the frontier for awhile now. It has very good realibilty. I was actually very surprised
How did it hold up ?
Both nice trucks; seems like a 2" lift on the Nissan would be perfect!
I pick the Nissan Frontier PRO-4X for 2022. All bets off when the new Tacoma, Ranger, and GM-Twins are released.
Yeah good thing they got a head start. Can't wait to see how the new Colorado is.
What kind of moron worries about a turning radius of a 4WD?
@@GeorgeSawtooth um, the 2WD is the same tough guy. Do you own one? I do. It’s f’n aggravating.
@@dontderockmerizz3211 Yeah I am a tough guy and could probably kick anyone's ass in a street fight and I don't care what a turning radius is on a truck. Buy a Prius.
@@randalsweeting661 open diffs? They are limited slip diffs not open, the old first gen was open diffs
I can upgrade suspension, bumpers, and tires. Powertrain on the other hand, not so much.
Gimmick? Are you that uneducated?
For a few dollars you can put a lift in the Nissan, upgrade the tires and get aftermarket steel front skid plate for a lot less than 10k.
Definitely would go with the Nissan but unfortunately for them I'll stick with my ZR2.
It’d be cool 😎 if Toyota would let you get the tundra running 🏃♀️ gear ⚙️ in the taco 🌮
While I really love the redesign of the Frontier, having test driven an SV, it still feels like it's a bit overpriced and over hyped
What's the great price on that Toyota running now, $100,000?
I have a 21 with the same powertrain as 22, but the old body and interior. Powertrain is excellent on the road. Turn radius is atrocious
@@TheConservativesrock the Chrysler pt cruiser and 2nd gen Frontiers have the worst turning radius of any vehicle I've driven...and I deal cars for a living..
Such a good video, I've been looking at getting a Tacoma, and your videos are great at showing what they can do, cheers from BC
full disclosure, I had to have my engine rebuilt on my 2016 tacoma at 119K miles.... yea.... The dealership told me how rare it was, even though they had several 3rd gens up on the lifts getting major repairs. I think toyota slipped in the quality control and hides major problems... took 3 months for a rebuild, over $3200 in car rental fees....
From what I see the pro4x is just a TRD off road down to the Bilstein 4600's so comparing it to a TRD pro (especially price) seems ridiculous.
The king cab long box Pro-4X doesn't get the fender flares? Interesting omission compared to the crew cab.
There is a steel skid plate under the aluminum plate in the front of the Frontier
I like the new redesigned Frontier Pro4X a lot - but I’d go for the Toyota all day long & twice on Sunday, hands down!
For this test to be fair you would compare the Pro4x vs the normal TRD but since you didn't just add the nismo 2 inch lift and then this would be an even match up with 8k still in your pocket with a much better power train and overall better truck being the the Nissan hands down.
Nissan doesn't offer manual trans.Toyota does. Checkmate.
@@Doomzdayxx Tacoma doesn't offer a fully boxed titan half ton frame. Check mate.
It would be cool if we can see the spare tire space as well to see if it can fit a bigger tire.
The answer is to get the Frontier and do whatever lift you want, no matter the price, and it will still be cheaper than the Tacoma. A small lift would fix every gripe you had with the Frontier. It is a lot easier to swap the suspension on the Nissan than it is to swap the power train and fix the sight lines on the Tacoma.
you are exactly right I would choose the Frontier because it has the better powertrain and in my opinion has a better interior and better looks, the frontier can do anything the tacoma does offroad just maybe with a little drama and it is like the better tacoma just not as good offroad in some situations but you can fix that little offroad gripe

@T-boe the first the 2.3 has been around for quite some time with no significant issues.
You forgot to mention that the Nissan has a fully boxed frame where as the Toyota it is a C frame.
Yeah the Nissan definitely has better under body protection than the taco 🌮 does
Look at the Nissan’s front diff, exposed. The 1/4 aluminum skid on the Tacoma protects what you’re most likely to hit a lot better than the thin tin plates on the Nissan

Canada is so lucky, in that you get the Pro-4X in a King cab offering. In the states we can only get a Pro-4X in a Crew Cab.
Noticed something weird. On the side of the Tacoma is says "Tacoma" in chrome not blacked out. How the did that happen? They come standard in black out, which looks way better especially with the electric lime green metallic.

I think the 2nd gen Tacoma power train is better than the current. I would still take Toyota because of better quality. I am not confident Nissan is as good. I know I have said this before and many don't believe me but my brother in law knows of a coworker who had a 2 or 3 year old TITAN and it had 3 engines replaced under warranty. The biggest problem with the Taco is the cab is horribly small. It’s basically a different class when compared to anything else in the Midsize category. Back seats are for small kids only. Bed is way smaller too. Combine that with a higher price and I’d take a Frontier, Ranger or Colorado/Canyon anytime.
