Goin' muddin' with your dad in two cool trucks, that's a good day eh. Happy Father's Day to all the dads. Thank you Truck King for another fun video. 😁
I've always been a Taco guy and owned a 4Runner for a bit. Got a Pro-4X in January and I love it! I took it out for a spin in the trails and it really did just fine. Now, I don't do extreme stuff like in the video, so I think the Frontier has an edge over the Taco when it comes to smoothness, interior desing and overall bang for your buck. Yes, we know the Taco is reliable and the Frontier is brand new, yet I decided to get the "new" Nissan a chance. So far, so good!
Already has a recall for the Nissan
@@josefermalino461 what recall?
my 2016 already had an engine rebuild at 119K, paint is fading hard on the roof, (yes I waxed it 4 times a year). tail gate shock is broken, plastic trim inside the sunroof fell off... Yea, so I am not real happy with my Taco. Oh and Toyota corp said no help.... So, pretty much one of the worst vehicles I have ever owned. Major bummer. I got it for the reliability and it sucks. Oh and the gas mileage isn't even close to what they advertise. sorry guys. I wanted to love it, but can't wait to get a new truck when I get the money...
@@perrydavies3592😂😂😂
What are your thoughts on it now?
I said it before in a different video about the Frontier, but the Frontier is probably the pound-for-pound most overbuilt and robust passenger vehicle sold in North America.
How so? I owe one and I love it. First truck I’ve owned
@@Rigo9 he wasn't saying that's a negative.
@@johnnyreb9398 I know, I meant as in I would like to know how. When it comes to vehicles I just mess around with the basics and this being my first truck I’d like to know
@@Rigo9 think miniature titan. Full box frame like titan and f150. And ram :)
@@bjornironsides6474 the ranger and colorado/canyon also have fully box high strength steel frames
Nissan really needs to bring back the 6 speed manual transmission option for the new frontier. That truck would be a killer piece of kit!
That’s the only reason I picked the Tacoma over the Frontier. 6speed MT and I’m jumping to Nissan.
Same here! Patiently waiting.
Ill wait, they need to have as toyota still keep it.
Agreed.. for off-roading I’ve always found a manual to be the best
@@Thelos7878it’s a fake manual though right?
Steve your excitement is so awesome. I love the work you guys do at Truck King! Keep it up Elmers.
Hope you all appreciate and cherish all this time you get to spend together. I lost my dad, and I’ll tell ya, you look back a lot. - Hope you guys make lots of great memories together.
Sold my tacoma and bought the 2022 Nissan pro! Loving it!!! What no one is mentioning " LIFETIME POWER TRAIN WARRANTY " for Nissan. Using the EXTRA 10 grand for a 3 inch lift and radflow springs and shocks!😁
After moding your pro4x you still have a couple thausands left over and a better truck than a 🌮
See you got the right idea.
After you are done I would LOVE to see that one put up against the almighty Toyota.
I will point out a bad design you will contend with that is better on toyota and pretty much any other truck I've looked at and that's upper control arm placement. For some reason niSSan didn't center the coil bucket in the upper control arm so when lifted the factory control arm bangs down on the coil bucket so you have to get aftermarket upper control arms I have alldogs offroad but there's spc too but something else I don't know if you have checked out that would be up your alley since it seems like you might have the funds for modding go look up the titan swap for the frontier I think alldogs offroad already did it on the gen 3 frontier should be a video. If you haven't seen anything on that yet it's where they take a titan front end and put it on the frontier and give it crazy travel. I believe the kit pretty much includes what I told you about and what you were talking about but I think it runs $1700-3000 not sure haven't looked lately.
Yes, the parts were ordered from alldogs offroad. With radflow coils and shocks!
I think a more apples to apples comparison would be to compare a access cab Tacoma TRD Off Road against this Frontier Pro-4x. The Bilstein shocks are comparable and the price isn't significantly different either.
I agree, but sometimes it's hard to even get the trucks they have in the video
I agree. The Fox shocks on the Pro model will dominate Bilstein basics anyday
The pro is an off-road, just with astheruc differences and a lift
I dont agree, they are comparing the top of the line frontier vs the top off the line tacoma so i think thats a great comparison. They are talking about 10k diference BUT only because tje frontier is the king cab, if it was the crew cab the diference in $ will be much much smaller and if that was the case ill choose the Tacoma any day
I feel like the TRD off road is a direct comparison to the pro4x. If frontier came out with a pro-4x nismo it’d be a direct comparison to the TRd pro.
Love this YT channel. As always, great work. Taco is awesome but it’s due for a healthy revision with some more modern technology.
Great video in comparison and loved your guys' energy! New subscriber!
Niceeee. Thanks for sharing this new trail. I want to head down there this weekend with my Ford Ranger
What a great video, guys! Always love your enthusiasm and authenticity. Hope we get to run into each other one of these days. Love your content! Keep up the excellent work. 🙌🏻
Love the ramp to reveal the underbody details. Very nice touch.
Thanks! 👍
Yep got to say ive been looking for a video comparing this and this is the first review I found with this😊
When you consider price and comfort I’ll take the Nissan.
But would the Nissan last and hold its value as long as the Toyota? I don’t think so.
@@galindojuan1 yes, Nissan trucks last. Yes, it will hold value. Also why is the last factor such a big deal for you? What person buys a new truck and immediately thinks about it’s resale value 😂😂
@@chrisbreezy2676 can you please tell me where I said I’m going to sale it right off the bat.
That’s gross
Wish that king cab pro4x would make it in the states, great work as always guys
Great content. Thanks for the video.
For less than $10,000 you could do some mods to the Frontier for better tires and higher clearance and still benefit from better breaks and power.
Nice video! Thanks for doing this. I bought the 22 pro in electric lime, manual transmission. I love it. Who needs crawl control when you have 1st gear in 4LO!
1st gear is for rock only but hard
Also no demonstration on pro
Such a good video, I've been looking at getting a Tacoma, and your videos are great at showing what they can do, cheers from BC
full disclosure, I had to have my engine rebuilt on my 2016 tacoma at 119K miles.... yea.... The dealership told me how rare it was, even though they had several 3rd gens up on the lifts getting major repairs. I think toyota slipped in the quality control and hides major problems... took 3 months for a rebuild, over $3200 in car rental fees....
With the extra $10,000 you can do a serious suspension upgrade!
I was thinking the same thing. Buy the SR5 and upgrade the suspension, etc yourself and save $$$
@@cnoyes72 or you could just get the better over all truck in the first place and put decent suspension and lockers on the niSSan.
Buy a TRD offroad instead of the pro. It has all the tech the pro has just with bilstein shocks. Buy the factory 2 inch lift. All under 45k
@@johnnyreb9398 Yeah, that would be the Ranger. LOL
I would spend and did spend the extra $10,000 to have peace of mind of reliability. Nissan is not known for reliability at all. Hell they have been known to have one of the worst transmissions.
Damn fine video. Thanks guys 👍
It was really cool seeing you guys tackle a different set of terrain in the Minden off-road park, in addition to your own, and I believe you nailed the comparison and the verdict on these two trucks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great vid man
Love your review... best duo.
just interesting watching your stories about stuff other than the trucks! :) Truck stuff cool too.
Agree, the Frontier is an “overall” 4x4 for regular roads, off roading, and what most people will use it for. Definitely a great value.
The taco is a great off roader but for everyday driving it is not as comfortable nor is it a bargain 😉
Well, sure it is. The Tacoma gonna last so much longer
@@anthem4333 last longer? The frame rotting is a concern! And longevity for the Nissan is certainly of no concern. They are both reliable trucks.
@@steve8803 the frame rotting WAS a concern, not anymore. And let’s not act like Nissans automatic trannies are any good (except the Allison in the Titan).
@@anthem4333 it still is a concern according to The Car Care Nut. Let's not act like the auto tranny in the Tacoma is very pleasant, always hunting. Sluggish. I honestly believe both trucks are the most reliable in the segment. Obviously neither are perfect. Personally I would get the pro4x over the TRD pro because it's significantly cheaper in my country.
@@anthem4333 That's pure bias and conjecture. See the video of Brian Murphy who drove his Frontier a MILLION miles doing delivery work in Chicago.
Another great comparison video … thanks! BTW the Tacoma’s skid plate is also aluminum
You're really saying the opposite of what every other reviewer I've seen say about these. The others all say the Frontier is better than the Tacoma in nearly every way possible.
great video!
You’re right about crawl control, very jerky. Only use if needed for me. Tacoma is the better off road truck, no question
Craw control is literally that. It's only jerky on the lowest setting in a flat surface, but then again, it's not meant to be used in flat surface.
Love the Tacoma…but due to how old it is I seriously have trouble justifying its cost! Jeezzzz
IMO it's just a powertrain upgrade away from being near perfect.
@@OverlandOrange I understand that buddy but in 2004 I bought a Ford Expedition NBX model which was the off-road package of that year. I sold it to a friend three years ago and he still has it with 250,000 miles on it. It runs like a top and has never needed any repairs other than a left rear axle. Original starter alternator and everything else under the hood. Toyotas are not the only reliable vehicles on the road.
@@OverlandOrange I don’t think it was luck. The 5.4L 2V motor was awesome and the vehicle was garage kept with religious oil changes and regular maintenance.
I have a 21 TRD off road, with the TRD lift and a standard transmission. Saved $8k vs buying the pro and has all the same tech and upgraded suspension. I’ll take that manual transmission all day everyday vs the frontier for the same cost.
I mean many people rather have older and simple its a offroad truck or truck per say its not suppose to be fancy just get a pavement princess if thats what you want.
Awesome Video! I have a a TRD with crawl control and it works great! it makes noise for certain, however i use it when i need it. Its rare that i use it, in fact i can't remember ever like cruising with it on a little muddy road. I use it to get out of being stuck and very slow technical situations. Nissan Shock mounts are higher than the rear diff at least you don't need to put a spare tire kit in the Bed where your gear/load is to be placed.
The trd skidplate is quarter of an inch thick aluminum, while the sound of the crawl control might not be up to the rest of the manufacturer's, it does still work, which is the whole idea of it. It's funny how back then everyone was so impressed with it, and in a lot of cases, still impresses
well I don't think it was ever meant to sound good.
Moreover...the crawl control system in the Tacoma is PROVEN RELIABLE
Great scenary. post cordinates for trails and maps if possible later videos for local people to have a chance take the same course to "feel" the vibe if yah know i mean. awsome
The trd skid plates are also aluminum, not steel. And I’d argue the Toyota crawl control is still the best out of any brand and the jerking back and forth makes it better off road when you are trying to get over bigger rocks and that jerking really helps the Toyota trucks find and catch it’s footing slippery terrain or climbing over stuff and getting you out of situations. A
The Tacoma TRD off-road in the access cab configuration would have been cheaper, and about $10k less than the trd pro. The front skid plate on the TRD pro is aluminum.
I’ve got that exact truck ordered and selling my 2020 pro with 43k miles. Love these trucks.
I was thinking the same. Price of extended vs crew cab isn’t apple to apple. The technical differences seem fair enough.
came here to say this
Trd pro skid plate is boron steel
@@ponolovefarms3926 how much?
I already bought the Tacoma and was wondering if I should upgrade the tires. I am impressed with how much those stock tires can get through. I know they dont have the sidewall protection of a KO2 but the traction is impressive.
Great video
The class leaders here. Nissan and Toyota. Reliability. Value. Resale. Features. The domestics can't touch that.
Haven’t seen y’all do any side by side films in a while I hope 🤞🏼 y’all can get your hands on the new krx 1000/4seater and tell us what you think 💭 about it compared to the old two seater
Just bought a 2022 tacoma trd off road. Cannot wait to pick it up in 3 days. Had a 09 tacoma base model i bought in 2010 wit 12k miles on it. Got into an accident last month and it got totalled with 263,000 miles on it an was running strong
Amazing how many companies have copied the front cutouts for the approach angle of the ZR2.
Both solid trucks. I currently own a TRD off road. I also had an older frontier I traded in but over you can’t go wrong in either. I do give the off-road win to the Tacoma though.
The king cab long box Pro-4X doesn't get the fender flares? Interesting omission compared to the crew cab.
Agreed. Spend the extra moolah . Great comparison . Love that hydro line.
I like the video and comparisons, but the other point I want to add is that the TRD Pro is also a full 4 door truck, while the Nissan Frontier King Cab is only a 2 door. That also accounts for some of the large price differential between the two trucks. If you want a closer price point to the Frontier, and still a rugged, off-road truck, you can get the TRD Off-Road Access Cab for cheaper, and some of the Pro options are offered as upgrades to the Off-Road Model. I will say, for interior comfort, Toyota kind of lags behind competitors. The manual trans also helps avoid some of the jumpiness and awkward shifting of the automatic system.
Don’t like the comparison of the TRD Pro vs Pro4X. Nissan needs NISMO to get involved and put out something comparable. Pro4X is the TRD off-road competitor.
For 10K you could add couple inches of travel, better tires, and a front locker and still have $ leftover for dinner.
pretty much what i said too lol.
I bought a 22 frontier pro 4x. And I love the damn thing!! My only gripe is the intelligent braking system. I believe that it's a little 'dramatic'. Thoughts?
This is the only video on youtube of a new frontier in a king cab off roading
I do like that off road park and hope to see y’all film 🎞 some more trucks or other off road vehicles 🚗 on it
It would be cool if we can see the spare tire space as well to see if it can fit a bigger tire.
I agree the crawl control system makes a lot of noise and isn't the smoothest, but it gets the job done, so I don't see the problem with it. You can reach up and increase its speed with the knobs a bit and it won't do this lurching. The lowest setting is useful only when you really need to be that slow. If you look at the Ford Ranger (at least the 2020 and 2021 model years), the crawl control doesn't go down to this speed. Personally, I don't care as long as it works.
I've always thought the pro-4x was more on par with the trd off road would love to see that comparison?
Agree, more equal comparison, both have bilstein shocks and stock suspension height.
Just received my 2022 Frontier Pro-4X Crew Cab and did some trails with it here in Utah. Definitely more worth the money after dealer fees are incorporated into the pricing. Toyota dealers want $20,000 on top of MSRP and Nissan wanted a standard markup. Far and away more worth it to get the Frontier. Now, a year from now if the market cools down and prices become regular again, Tacoma may be the clear winner. But as the market stands, get a Frontier plus a lift and STILL save $16,500 over a Tacoma. Both are great trucks, no doubt.
of course you would say that when you bought one. gotta justify it somehow
happy Father's day TK!
I test drove both and I felt that you got more bang and more comfort for your buck with the Nissan. It did everything the TRD Pro could do for almost 20k cheaper, here in the states.
20k cheaper? the dealer I'm getting my Tacoma from sells trd pro tacomas for msrp which is around 47k
@@W0RLDSSMALLESTVI0LIN In this market? Used 2020 tacos are selling for 60k. Brand new TRD pros all have a 10k+ USD market adjustment.
@@W0RLDSSMALLESTVI0LIN ummm you must not be looking at a trd pro
@@Falinzin No, they don't. The dealer I got my TRD offroad sells strictly at MSRP. They just sold 3 TRD Pros for under 50k.
@@scott8238 wrong. If you want the dealer name I'll give it to you, the trucks are still on their site
It is crazy, it is incredible that in 2023 the Tacoma does not have a rear disc brake, it is not understood
I admit, I came to leave "These 2 trucks, again?" as a comment lol.. However, a new location means this will be interesting!
You could buy the trail edition, locking diff it has a 1 1/2 inch lift and way cheaper than the TRD, if cost is a issue, or a off road model too. The crawl control is noisy but, the new Tundra is a new system and quiet, the new Tacoma and 4Runner will be updated soon so I see why they would wait to upgrade that, not very cost efficient at the end of the model life.
,
Agree, the trail eddition seems like the sweet spot for the Tacoma. Plus it looks great too.
Love this channel! I currently have a 2021 Colorado ZR2 but have thinking about trading. Although, I can use the rear locker in 4high. I’m surprised how much rust the Nissan has. Has it been through a winter with salt? You guys rock!
Guys have already figured out a wiring mod on frontier to lock rear locker in 4 high.
That crawl control in the Taco is so loud other trucks probably think you've got a system. Lol
I like how these trucks get through the water I live in Orlando this year we have real bad hurricanes I saw a small car trying to get through the water they started smoking I was seeing the big trucks go through the water with no problem
Noticed something weird. On the side of the Tacoma is says "Tacoma" in chrome not blacked out. How the did that happen? They come standard in black out, which looks way better especially with the electric lime green metallic.
Do one with canyon elevation 4x4
I've been in the dunes with jeeps and I'm able to keep up
It just needed tires and 2" level and send it
Great comparison. I’m sticking with my Ranger Tremor though. We should definitely see it in another one of these videos one of these days……..
@T-boe the first the 2.3 has been around for quite some time with no significant issues.
When did the Toco get a 6 speed? I wonder if the 4Runner will get a 6 speed
Would there be some major changes with the 2024 Tacoma
what about rear diff breather on tacoma going through all the water.
Great video. After test driving both as a daily driver , I’m going Frontier. Better power band and transmission as well as better fuel economy, which I tested. Both make reliable trucks but for bang for the buck and overall ergonomics and long term use. I think the Frontier is a tad better. Nissan doesn’t get enough credit for their motors. The 5.6 as well as the former 4.0 litre are Bulletproof. Always like the appearance of the TRD Pro but just not behind the wheel as much.
What good is protection if it does seem to be good protection
Are the tires in the Tacoma 33” or 35”?
Both nice trucks; seems like a 2" lift on the Nissan would be perfect!
I'm doing a 3 inch lift on my 2022 Pro 4x (In Tactical Green Metallic) that I just picked up - seems the right height for me, was going to do 4 inches but then it wouldn't fit in my garage! Compared to the Taco's on Toyota dealers lots here with $10-15k market adjustments I'm in the Pro 4x (Which unfortunately I still had to pay a $5k above MSRP market adjustment) for almost $20k USD less than the Taco... that's a lot of upgrades.
@@Falinzin This is exactly the info I was hoping to see. I know the video compared stock models, but it does seem like a Pro 4x with a lift kit and a shock upgrade, if it could be done for the difference in price to a TRD Pro, would be a great vehicle.
Can you guys review the 2022 Tacoma Trail edition.
i put my money on a 22 pro already and im lovn it
Anyone know which truck would be better in the snow?
Right on Steve!!! I'll take the Red Nissan..I like the New model...Hey Howard!!! The race is on for tht Big Mercury I mentioned few days ago..
I have to agree with you on the locker only being available in 4 low. My 20 Ram 1500 with the offroad package can be locked in any mode including 2 wd. Something Toyota needs to address.
Locker or no Locker, Toyota buyers will be loyal to the brand due to it’s reliability better re-sale value things that unfortunately Dodge does not currently offer.
So what would it take to add to Nissan to make it not equal but better? 1-2" Bigger and better tires seems it could make for better vehicle.
Is the alternator still at the bottom of the engine on the Frontier? I’ve personally seen the older Frontier ruin alternators on basic water crossings that no other vehicles had issues with. Hopefully they fixed that.
likely as they use the same garbage 3.8 again
3" lift & Cooper MTs on my pro 4X. it does well off-road.
Same here. Lift and didn't run me any where near an extra $10k
@@alinhinthoulay6323 ya but you know that the extra money into the 4x is now gone... the pro tacoma you can always sell for comparison to the new Price of a pro...
There is a steel skid plate under the aluminum plate in the front of the Frontier
I pick the Nissan Frontier PRO-4X for 2022. All bets off when the new Tacoma, Ranger, and GM-Twins are released.
Yeah good thing they got a head start. Can't wait to see how the new Colorado is.
Which one will last longer
Hey Steve I’d love to see you guys bring the ranger tremor out to the off road park.
Yes! I think it would be a great comparison video with the Taco.
Can't wait for the release of 2024 trucks. New tacoma and coloroado zr2, ranger raptor, and rummor of a dakota. The midsized truck segments about to get serious. Wish we could get a 79 series land cruiser here in Canada like in Australia. Either way about time to see better things to come
2021 4Runner owner - My truck allows you to run one of the MTS modes in 4H. The least aggressive one. I think it's called mud/sand? I run it in the winter when I'm in deep snow and it works great! You sure the Tacoma doesn't allow it?
EDIT: I stand corrected. Just confirmed in the user manuals of both the 4Runner and Tacoma. The MUD & SAND mode can be used in 4H on the 4Runner but must be in 4L on the Tacoma. Very strange!
Will test mine, Tacoma TRD 4x4 premium.
Probably programming considering they are very similar parttime 4wd modes
i wonder why the nissan is rusting as fast as it is . any thoughts?
If you're ever out towards Ottawa for some off roading let me know. I'd love to wheel some of the trails here with you guys.
if we get a chance we will.
Taco hands down 💁♂️ it’s a no brainer has been for decades…there’s a reason for that. 💁♂️
Taco transmissions are garbage and the truck is made for midgets.
I sat in the pro 4x today had double cab 4 door. It made my 4runner feel big. It's seat bottom is too high also. Cramped in there back seat should fit a couple kids. I really wanted to love it but too small for me.
Yeah, the Toyota needs to upgrade a lot of their vehicles. When it comes on the off-road package, crawl control systems. Keep the dependability and update what is old.
For a few dollars you can put a lift in the Nissan, upgrade the tires and get aftermarket steel front skid plate for a lot less than 10k.
Hands down between the creature comforts inside and the bang for the buck I'm all in for the Nissan frontier it's cheaper and you can do a lot of upgrades for 10 grand price difference plus the 9 speed keeps the frontier from searching for a gear when pulling hills and the bed isn't lined with plastic it's a steel bed that you can have line x sprayed in.
“big step”😭😭😂
It’d be cool 😎 if Toyota would let you get the tundra running 🏃♀️ gear ⚙️ in the taco 🌮
TRD off-road, and the pro 4-X are very comparable and can’t go wrong with either
The taco skid is aluminum too
Nissan has done the steel skid plate at least since 2019, because my truck has one as well for PRO4x
Wow MInden eh? I have a cottage nearby never knew there was an off road park there...
Is Ironwood Hydroline a trail or your property? this channel is sick!
That's our own property. But, there are lots of free trails in Ontario
