We love our ropefish! Definitely recommend one if you get a chance to buy one. They like diced up raw shrimp, bloodworms, sinking shrimp pellets. They also really love planted aquariums and floating plants! With floating plants they will spend more time on the surface slithering around the plants, just make sure you have a lid on your aquarium. We also have a bichir, and they get along great and basically like the same foods, and are very fun to watch.
I wanted to get the leaf fish, and got really excited to find out that my local fish store had them, but they were smaller than my fingernail xD not kidding
Mai Dude now, once it gets to 3 inches, it's aggression gets to overdrive compared to before, but when they're that small (I use to own one that small) they're slow, cute, and shy. I kept one with a baby Senegal bichir (as big as my pinky) with 2 leaf fish the size of my thumb and he killed both. They also get bullied easily by anything when they're young, my blue gourami bullied it first day so I had to separate them.
Would personally definitely recommend the ropefish over nearly any knife fish. I've kept both (albeit, short term) during my time working at my LFS. The ropes tend to come out more, are more hardy, easier to feed, and typically much MUCH easier to care for. Not to mention, you can put the ropes with a wider variety of fish and aren't as difficult to house. Just keep in mind that the ropes do jump out of nearly anything unless it's sealed very tightly.
Do you think the small subspecies of Polypterus "Retropinnis" would be suitable in a 30 gallon tank? I really love the fish, and have heard varying tank recommendations from 29 to 60 gallons, but would like to stick it with my unused and cycled 30. That is, until I have the funds for a new tank. Would that work? (They max out at 10')
Bren7080 i believe you are talking about polypterus mokelebembe? It is often confused with the retropinnis and gets to 12-14 inches. Retropinnis has no known subspecies.
Would a ropefish work in a well filtered 72 gallon with primarily catfish ( synodontis, ancistrus, hoplo, bumblebee catfish, Raphael catfish, brochis and a pictus) and 3 cichlids ( a Jack Dempsey, a convict and a jewel cichlid ( all 3 are surprisingly peaceful for their type and don't bother even the itty bitty spotted raphael catfish) and would an African leaf fish be bullied by the Jack seeing as it has a more cichlid like shape
We'd be worried about the Ropefish eating properly with those fish! They're slow, shy fish - with species like Pictus Catfish, the Ropefish may be bullied out of its food, unfortunately. Similarly, the Ctenopoma would likely not eat very well with large cichlids as its tankmates.
Best way, would probably be to lower the water level if you have a deep tank. Since it would have less spurt for jumping and also, it wouldn't be able to slither up the edges as far. Alternatively a deeper lip. So less open space in the centre. And I reckon they are escape artist due their eel like nature.
Is that the fluval roma 240 aquarium? How tall is this aquarium? I mean the viewing area of the tank not including the framing. Tank looks nice. Thinking of getting one!
Jeffmeister! Very observant on your part, no mods necessary the hosing collar inserts into the intake side, the suction of the intake is sufficient to keep it in position.
thank you for ur last reply it helped.i have another question.when breeding angelfishes.does it matter on the color on the female.or i cud breed two different color angels.or its what color the female.i hope im saying it right.
David, you are most welcome. You can breed different color and scale varieties of angelfish together as they are the same species of fish. You will get a variety of fry from the spawning of course. There is a lot of information on line in regards to fish breeding and genetics and specifically on angelfish. We strongly recommend you do some research and wish you all the best in gaining more knowledge and experience in breeding tropical fish!
Fluval Aquatic thank you very much.i did do some research.an it said that the one with the stronger jean.will be the one that the babys look like more.thank you again.
Fluval Aquatics thank you! I currently don’t have any fish at all I’m getting ready to get started and I have a 46 gallon aquarium. I know that I want kuhli loaches for sure though
I have a question about bettas. I've read that you can keep at least 4 betta females together to make a "soroity tank", is this possible? A video on this topic and maybe seeing an example on it would be awesome!
iCST When you just start a soroity is it normal for some bettas to be agressive? and should that be concerning to the point where you have to take the betta out the tank? or is it best to leave the agressive betta in the tank and let them sort it out until they're settled?
iCST Can you keep a single male with the female? What is the smallest tank they can be kept in HAPPILY. I can't do anything smaller that a 10 gallon unless otherwize specified.
Yes female bettas can be kept together but do provide at least a 5 gallon and make sure to offer plenty of hiding places, plants are always a good thing. Be prepared to isolate an overly aggressive female, some are more aggressive than others, most of the time however you can keep 2 or more females together.
strangely all oddball fishes come from africa, here i want to ask you that can i keep my albino senegal bichir pair(male & female) in 20 gallon(2.5 ft long,1 ft wide) aquarium?
It should be fine. You can have some decorative structure located in the path of water flow within the aquarium, this will also help to distribute it more as well.
I have a 12 gallon edge, and while it's a great tank, I'm not sure it's the best choice out of the three for anabantoids. The opening is rather small so when they surface for air they might struggle a bit until they figure it out. You could lower the water some, but that'd kinda defeat the point of the edge. Just something to consider while you decide :)
Hi Fluval, great video. Just a correction, P. bichir lapradei can reach 29 inch in aquaria. The variation you have has a lower than typical finlet count, so it may only grow to around 2ft. The low finlet count may be down to genetic impurity with P. endlicheri or P. ansorgii, in which case it's known to exceed 30"
Yes there is variation in what size fish will get to in an aquarium (feeding, maintenance, etc., plays a part), we do state that a 6 ft aquarium will be necessary as it gets larger.
That really depends on the retailer, they are available, its a matter of searching different retailers. We in fact did just that and noted a number of on line retailers that have stock.
Daniel, we think so too! Here is the link to our UK site for your convenience: www.fluvalaquatics.com/uk/product/18179-roma-240-led-aquarium-with-walnut-decor-strip/#.WS2cZZIrLcs
David, I think part of your question is missing, but from what we gather you are asking about snails eating angelfish eggs? Usually the angelfish would defend their eggs against snails for example or in many cases the pair of angelfish eat their own eggs, either scenario is possible. Typically in a tank set up to have a pair of angelfish spawn there should be no snails present and once the pair spawns the eggs on the item they were laid on are removed and placed in a controlled hatching aquarium.
Fluval Aquatics thank you ill take the snails our an a small pleco that i have in the tank with my pair that i no that the pleco will eat the eggs.is it comin for the angels to eat there eggs or. when its there first batch?
It is common for some pairs to constantly do that. The most successful method is to take the spawn from the parents and hatch and rear separately in perfect conditions.
the one problem you'll find with ropes is the fact that they rely strongly on scent and vibration to find there food they have very bad eyesight, I'm still trying to get mine onto pellet, also ropes are air breathers as are bichir(the other long fish in the tank) ropefish and bichir are actually cousins in the fish world they are boy air breathers and considered wily escape artists and have been known to jump out of tanks when stressed.
Good addition, yes they are good at escaping, important to have a well sealed aquarium canopy. We have not had much difficulty in getting our Rope fish to eat just about anything we give them. That said, it may take a few weeks of freshly de-thawed frozen foods to get them feeding properly after purchase.
The Red Tail shark can become territorial and is capable of attacking most other tank mates as they grow and mature. That said, it is a combination you can try if the aquarium is 75 gallons or greater.
Hi sir. I have a problem with my betta fish. Before 4 month ago I put a couple betta fish together (male and female). And a result they bread more than 30 baby. and now they grow very well. But I noted Appearance of pale spots on their head and back and the spots every day it be a larger. They eating very will and they are normal. But they loss there color. What’s your advanced to me? Thanks
The large piece of wood in that aquarium constantly leaches tannins that discolor the water to a slight amber color. We do regular good sized water changes so it keeps discoloration to a minimum.
Ctenopoma acutirostre (Leopard Bushfish) does not make bubble nests, they embrace in the usual anabantoid fashion and the eggs float up to the surface after having been fertilized. They have no parental care and so the eggs just lay in the vegetation at the surface.
While their bubblenest building is not on par with bettas for example there are observations of small nests, the rest of your comment is correct and thanks for that detail.
Wow awesome rope fish!! I love fluval tanks. 4 in fact. I recently decided to gift my brother one and the light fixture wouldn't turn on. I ordered him two new bulbs off pets mart and it still won't work. Obviously it's defective. I unfortunately didn't keep my receipt. What would be my next step?! I don't want him to keep his fish and plants in the dark!! Please help.
Katia, your brother is a lucky guy! When the flourescent light fixture is plugged in and you have verified the bulbs are properly inserted into their respective sockets, you can try running your hand along the light tubes to ensure it is not some kind of grounding issue, this can help the bulbs illuminate, but it should not be necessary to do this all the time. Return the unit to PetSmart if those two suggestions don't work with your receipt and have it replaced. If this is a Fluval product and you do not have the situation resolved to your satisfaction please visit fluvalaquatics.com and select your country, then go to the support page.
hello. good morning. everytime my Betta's see me they go crazy and move their fins fast and move towards the tank quick and swim back and forth. it means they are happy to see me?
how much was the polypterus lapreidei, there is a 10 inch one for $50 at my local pet store and wondering if it is worth it or over priced!!! Nice vid though :)
That really depends on the market. We suggest calling some local reputable fish stores in your location, if they don't stock the species we show in this video we are sure they can order some of them for you.
Yes it does look that way but it is not. Prior to the video shoot there was a fair bit of activity in front of the aquarium, that got the fish a little nervous and they were swimming through the tight decor and brushing up against the sand, what you are seeing are some particles of sand attached to the rather profuse mucous coating a healthy bush fish has.
yeah, the first one definitely looks like in its in the beta family. it looks like you just enlargened a betta's body, and gave it a smaller fin to body ratio lol
That is actually sand, the African bush fish and Rope fish alike do maintain a healthy protective slime coat, during the video shooting the fish did cause some stirring of the sand of which a bit stuck temporarily to their protective coating, it is not ick.
Dany, no you are not. The African bush fish does maintain a healthy slime coat, prior to filming there was typical pre-film prep and the bush fish got a little nervous and ended up having some grains of sand stuck to that protective coating.
I really enjoyed this video, but I would like to make one recommendation. While speaking can you please keep the camera focused on the fish you’re providing information on. The close up on the specimen is better for watcher and not so much time on yourself. I really enjoy watching the fish rather than the host. And please don’t become offended, because I don’t mean to come across as mean.
Pro-tip - this video is a great spotlight and has alot of great information, but you left out some of the most crucial information about these awesome fish; how tasty are they? Are they best grilled, baked, boiled? :P
ctenopoma acutirostre african bush fish not leaf fish ,air breathers of the anabantid family bubble nest breeders, real leaf fish are south american and when seen you will understand why they are called leaf fish. the birchir is quite nice not often seen of this type.
That is correct and we do identify the african bush fish as a "climbing perch" and an anabantoid. Not sure about the reference to leaf fish as no where in this video do we mention them.
Courtney, thanks for bringing that up, someone else had but for some reason we can't seem to find the comment. It does not have ick, what you are seeing is some small grains of sand that has attached to the normal and quite healthy mucous coating this fish has, it picked up some sand fragments as during our filming we did cause the fish to swim through the structure and closer to the sand more than they normally would.
Would it work in my 13 liter?
Awesome video. Love when you guys do showcases like this. Would love to see more. Keep up the good work!!
I wanted to get the leaf fish, and got really excited to find out that my local fish store had them, but they were smaller than my fingernail xD not kidding
Keep us posted on your experiences when you find the specimens you are looking for, they are an interesting fish.
Mai Dude now, once it gets to 3 inches, it's aggression gets to overdrive compared to before, but when they're that small (I use to own one that small) they're slow, cute, and shy. Aquarium fish sales online has some available. I work at that spot our leaf fishes are nice 2-3”
I want a fantastic tank like that.
oh and I LOVE the lighting.
Awesome fish and beautiful tank
Nice tank, it almost looks like a terrarium if you don't see the fish
the African bush fish looks like it might be related to an oscar
Never knew some of these fish even existed. I think Im in love with the ropefish now and might get it over the blackghost knife fish for my next tank.
Would personally definitely recommend the ropefish over nearly any knife fish. I've kept both (albeit, short term) during my time working at my LFS. Love the tank set up
awesome video, very informative and some neat facts!
Very well organised information, all of it lined up and appeared to be correct.
We're glad you think so! 😊
I have been keeping rope fish and other bichirs for a while, they are really great fish
We totally agree!
How big a tank?
Michael Janse van Rensburg I had a ropefish for 2 months but one day I forgot to completely secure the top of my tank and he jumped out....
I have american eel and bullhead catfish. They live together

no, that would be cruel, they need a 60 gal minimum.
I love Rope fish!! I had one that grew about 18" long :) Nice Video Sir.

@@fluval yea i might just go with some of the sturdier barbs instead
Nice tank.
I have a leaf fish, toughest fish Ive ever owned, even tougher than my chiclids
Do you guys not sell products directly from your site? It seems that all I'm able to do is add items to a wishlist.
Nick, no we do not, you are of course invited to use the support page to be directed to a retailer.
Thanks for your time.
nice tank. Looks awesome that wood on those stones with the javaplants
Thank you.
Rope Fish are escape artists! I Love them. But if there is a way out, they WILL find it.
Zacks Tanks Crazy Aquarium Guy how do you suggest stopping this I want to get one but most all aquariums have holes on the back for cords etc
Depends on the tank I guess. But if it's behind the tank I would use duct tape. hard too say.
Best way, would probably be to lower the water level if you have a deep tank. Since it would have less spurt for jumping and also, it wouldn't be able to slither up the edges as far. Alternatively a deeper lip. So less open space in the centre. And I reckon they are escape artist due their eel like nature.
Zacks Tanks Crazy Aquarium Guy I can't find them anywhere
I kept them like 15 years ago. And I love them. But they always escape and you end up losing them. Very cool fish. They get really big though.
Is that the fluval roma 240 aquarium? How tall is this aquarium? I mean the viewing area of the tank not including the framing. Tank looks nice. Thinking of getting one!
Jeffmeister! Yes! Fluval Roma 240 it is and the viewing area is 17 inches or 43.18 cm.
Cool! I notice you guys have a surface skimmer connected to the intake. Do you guys need to modify the intake?
Jeffmeister! Very observant on your part, no mods necessary the hosing collar inserts into the intake side, the suction of the intake is sufficient to keep it in position.
Ropefish are okay to have with Corycats right?
We have not tried that however large species of Corys in a group should not be an issue.

Any suggestions for a big fish that can be kept with kuhli loaches in a 46 gallon tank?
Adult angelfish depending on the other tank inhabitants in your aquarium.
Zenith Yes. Female Bettas are peaceful and can be kept as community fish.

It would be much better to keep the pair in an aquarium of at least 3 feet in length, better yet 4 ft.
soumya palkundu plz don’t do that. That’s like torture
Fishlives Matter yes, i agree with you.
I'm getting a betta fish, do you think the Fluval Edge, Fluval spec or Fluval flex will be the best for it?
edge
All of them would be good choices although we like the Edge the most because of its great style and the fact it's easy to adjust the filter flow rate.
Fluval Aquatics Thanks, I like the Edge design the most. Will the adjustable flow still be too powerful for a betta or is it fine?
It should be fine. You can have some decorative structure located in the path of water flow within the aquarium, this will also help to distribute it more as well.
I have a 12 gallon edge, and while it's a great tank, I'm not sure it's the best choice out of the three for anabantoids. It is common for some pairs to constantly do that. The most successful method is to take the spawn from the parents and hatch and rear separately in perfect conditions.
How big is that tank?
The aquarium is the ROMA 240, 240L / 63 US gallons.
Fluval Aquatics Thanks!
the one problem you'll find with ropes is the fact that they rely strongly on scent and vibration to find there food they have very bad eyesight, I'm still trying to get mine onto pellet, also ropes are air breathers as are bichir(the other long fish in the tank) ropefish and bichir are actually cousins in the fish world they are boy air breathers and considered wily escape artists and have been known to jump out of tanks when stressed.
Good addition, yes they are good at escaping, important to have a well sealed aquarium canopy. We have not had much difficulty in getting our Rope fish to eat just about anything we give them. That said, it may take a few weeks of freshly de-thawed frozen foods to get them feeding properly after purchase.
Could I keep a red tail shark with a rope fish
The Red Tail shark can become territorial and is capable of attacking most other tank mates as they grow and mature. That said, it is a combination you can try if the aquarium is 75 gallons or greater.
Fluval Aquatics it is it's a 15g
Fluval Aquatics I was just wondering if the rope fish could ever try to eat it
Highly doubt that. A 15 gallon is really not suitable long term for either of the two species you mention.
Gabrielle MacDonald please stop buying fish with not a single clue what they need to live. That tank is WAY to small for anything like that
Hi sir. I have a problem with my betta fish. Before 4 month ago I put a couple betta fish together (male and female). And a result they bread more than 30 baby. and now they grow very well. Deary Jamal you can try giving them special fish food made for brightening colors:)
Is the rope fish ok for beta splendids?
The size difference is quite big so I would advise against this.
We would not recommend it and do cover more suitable tank mates in the video.
No not good
What did u use to turn the water that colour?
The large piece of wood in that aquarium constantly leaches tannins that discolor the water to a slight amber color. We do regular good sized water changes so it keeps discoloration to a minimum.

hello. good morning. everytime my Betta's see me they go crazy and move their fins fast and move towards the tank quick and swim back and forth. it means they are happy to see me?
Hi Gina they are! We suspect mainly because it's feeding time :)
or snails are good tank mates for Leopard bush fish ?
Snails are safe to keep with the Leopard bush fish.
Is the 3rd fish a bichir?
The bichir, you are likely referring to the Nile birchir gets much larger, the species in the video max's out at about 6 inches.
@@fluval thank you.
what sand did you usr
We used a typical DIY center sand, we spent considerable time rinsing it out.
Isn't the leaf fish related to the polypterus
The Leopard Bush Fish (Ctenopoma acutirostre) is what we assume you mean, is not related.
great video!
The bush fish look like he runs the tank similar to how a marine angelfish would so :)
So... ropefish are like giant kuhli loaches?
Not as secretive and they consume larger foods.
Can leopard bush fish keep with oscar
If they are similar sized when you obtain them, it should work out.
how much was the polypterus lapreidei, there is a 10 inch one for $50 at my local pet store and wondering if it is worth it or over priced!!!
Nice vid though :)
Price does vary by market, we can suggest some on line research and perhaps calling a few stores in your area.
I kept betas with the bush fish they were best mates now I know why ,
how much would u pay for one of them
That really depends on the market. We suggest calling some local reputable fish stores in your location, if they don't stock the species we show in this video we are sure they can order some of them for you.
you should put a peacock eel
whats with the leopard bush fish, he looks like he has ich.

Yes we did, in fact it is approximately 240L with translates into a little over 63 gallons.
The bush fish looks a lot like my tiger oscar
how many gallons
This Roma aquarium is 60 gallons.
Hes buff af
Your first fish looks to be filled with Ick ..

Congrats! Great breed, this is my first GWP, previously always owned GSP's, both fantastic breeds!
ctenopoma acutirostre african bush fish not leaf fish ,air breathers of the anabantid family bubble nest breeders, real leaf fish are south american and when seen you will understand why they are called leaf fish. the birchir is quite nice not often seen of this type.
That is correct and we do identify the african bush fish as a "climbing perch" and an anabantoid. Not sure about the reference to leaf fish as no where in this video do we mention them.
If you like ropefish goood, I have klipp 😉
1:33 i think that leopard has ick

Courtney, thanks for bringing that up, someone else had but for some reason we can't seem to find the comment. It does not have ick, what you are seeing is some small grains of sand that has attached to the normal and quite healthy mucous coating this fish has, it picked up some sand fragments as during our filming we did cause the fish to swim through the structure and closer to the sand more than they normally would.
instead of saying polypterus all the time, just say bichir
you dont have to have a 6 ft tank
@@jordanponton255 yes you do, at least! you dont want the fish to JUST to survive, you want it to be happy too!
Oh yeah yeah
🤠👍🏻
Dasa snek
Am I the only one that seen ich on them :S
No Steve, a few people have made that comment, it is actually a few particles of sand that are stuck to the strong mucous coating on the bush fish.
