My entire teenage years in the 1990s were consumed by confused annoyance with Waqar, because he was overshadowing my hero, Wasim. Took a while to get over that. What a bowler! Thank you for remembering and honoring NH.
Brett Lee and Steyn were two genuine fast bowlers who remained fit for much longer than Waqar because of open chest action, whereas Waqar was side-arm. Waqar was just another level who changed the trend that brutal fast bowling was not just banging-in short BUT you can be equally successful by pitching it up. I saw Waqar live during 1990 to 1995 and don't think anyone be it Lees, Shoaibs, Donalds, or even 80s Westindies giants, ever bowled that fast consistently! He didn't give up pace for longevity. Privileged to have lived Waqar's era.
I remember the exact ball this spell started with. As Waqar was walking up to his run up mark, the South African commentators both commented how South Africa needed 50 runs to win with 9 wickets in hand - for Pakistan to win would be 'Impossible(said in Afrikaans). That exact ball Waqar took the first wicket and then they collapsed. Great memories!
At their peaks Waqar was a bigger match winner with an insane wicket taking record, however from 1995 he was a shadow of himself and this is what people remember not the force of nature (1989-94). Wasim had 1992 and unfortunatly Waqar had 1996.
As a left armer myself I was the biggest fan of Wasim however I always say growing up during their era the Waqar before the second stress fracture was a genuine phenomenon. During the England series of 92 he was not only the number 1 bowler in the world but also had some unbelievable records including the best strike rate post war and the highest number of bowled/LBW's. He still performed amazingly for many years even though his pace had dropped but people need to remember at his peak before around 94 he was arguably the best ever!!
This is from Akram fan ; Waqar was hitting 140 even in 2003 world cup, it was Waqar who got break through in the Chennai test but because of Akram vs dravid he was overshadowed, waqars numerous spells vs India sri Lanka South Africa specially in Sharjah and who can forget vs Australia and England in England, the fastest to take 200 , 300 and 400 wickets most dismissals by lbw and bowled had he played 50 more matches he would have taken more wickets than Akram . He had all variety but obviously he was known for banana swing
Ahmer if you love the celebrations than the next episode should be Waqar at Oval 92. Against Eng in the second innings he got Gooch Stewart Atherton and Gower in a single spell with the new ball. And then Malcolm later. The celebrations of Waqar were awesome. It was a series decider hence a genuine series winning spell. Trust me Ahmer you will love it.
I watched it live. i was a college student then. Pakistan was almost out of this game then Waqar came with his second spell and just devastated proteas. we all friends used to copy Waqar while playing cricket in those days.
Wasim maybe was a more complete bowler but i believe Waqar had stronger nerves. Still remember the final ODI in WI 1993 where Wasim gave away 13 runs in the last over. While in the penultimate over Waqar gave hardly 5. Same happened in 95 in NZL where Wasim gave away almost 10 in the last over and Waqar took 3 wickets in the penultimate over.
I think Waqar doesn't get the love he deserve because we in Pakistan want our bowlers to be magicians/artist. While Waqar was a force of nature. He was a one trick pony (initially) but what a trick it was. Waqar's career had three distinct phases: Phase 1(1989-1996): Wrath of God: This was peak Waqar. This was Waqar that had pace to go through the batsman. This Waqar did not need any help from the pitch. All he needed was the ball to reverse. And once it started reversing he would get it full and then it would tail in late. And no matter who the batsman was and no matter how many he had scored earlier. Waqar would make it all irrelevant. He was Genghis Khan reincarnate. If the ball was reversing and he was coming for you, there wasn't much you can do about that. As a batsman facing Waqar even before you left your house before the days play, you knew what he was going to do. Your mother would tell you on your way out what he was going to do. He would let you know what he was going to do all game long by pitching it up again and again and again . And as soon as the ball started reversing he would do it and there was nothing you could do about it. Phase 2(1996-1999): Mid-Life crisis Waqar: This Waqar had lost some of his pace. Just enough that the batsman were not getting late playing shots against him. But he still had some of that Genghis in him. So he kept trying to keep the ball up and trying to get it to reverse. But because he had lost some of that pace those pitched up deliveries, without the swing, were drivable for the batsman. So he started going for plenty. From time to time he would produce magic but that it wasn't consistent. Just like a dude going through mid-life crisis. Not realizing that the glory days are behind him. And that convertible Mustang and the 20 year old on his arm are not going to change that fact. Phase 3(2000-2003): This is the Waqar most young'uns remember. A respectable new ball out swing bowler who is good at delivering yorkers at the end of the innings. This was Waqar adjusted to his new reality. This was Mike Tyson post his Douglas loss. He became a normal, mid-level boxer. That fear was gone.
But ironically he went through the purple patch in his last phase and got his best odi figures , also had very good leg and off cutter , still touches 140 if you see 2003 wc , I believe had he played 50 more matches he would have crossed akrams ODI wickets tally
We almost had a repeat of this spell in the final of this tournament had Ramiz caught Logie. Waqar cleaned up Haynes and Simmons of beauties. Waqar was in full rythm and the ball was reversing.
It’s unfortunate there aren’t that many clips out there from Waqar’s peak years, or whatever there is is grainy footage from weird camera angles. His great ‘spells’ lasted whole games and tournaments. No better example than the Australasia Cup of 1990 where he took 17 wickets in 4 matches at an average of 7. Video game stuff. 4/42 against India, 6/26 against Sri Lanka, 5/20 against NZ, 2/38 against Australia. Three consecutive 4+ wicket hauls in ODIs might still be a record. The Aus figures in the final look bad in comparison to what went on before (story of his career) but they included clean bowling Dean Jones for a duck, and getting Border out cheaply soon after. Set up the game for Wasimbhai’s hat trick at the end, which is of course all that we remember that tournament for now. There was a 5fer in an ODI against the West Indies on their Pak tour in 1990/91 where he bowled Haynes and Logie. We won that series 3-0 against a strong Windies side. Those two balls got featured in a Gold Leaf ad, became part of Pak cricket folklore, for a while anyway, as it used to get played a lot during cricket broadcasts. That feeling that one wicket brings another the next ball, at least for me, was a Waqar Younis patent. Then there were the numerous last over finishes where he’d end matches with a wicket (bowled obv) when the other side needed 1-2 runs. The praying sisters game in Sharjah, the tied game in NZ. He even did it in the Afridi fastest 100 game against Sri Lanka in Kenya.
Wonderful bro... I thought I am the only this big fan of Waqar 😊 To add to your list: Waqar bowled the penultimate over for less than 5 runs thrice. Vs WI 5th ODI 93 Vs Ind 3rd ODI 97 Vs NZL 2nd ODI 95. The spectacular part was he gave the bowler bowling the last over 10 or more runs to defend. They needed 2 of the last ball and Waqar bowled Vaas. Truly a champion bowler. Definitely the best strike bowler of all time !!!
@@talhanaeem4364 Great stats re penultimate over! No doubt in my mind who I'd want to be bowling the last over if defending < 10 runs. One small correction, the 97 ODI you are referring to against India was the 2nd match of the series, played in Karachi. The 3rd match was in Lahore, the Ijaz Ahmed special, which I was lucky enough to see live at the stadium.
Feels good to know there are others who have also spent so much of their lives dissecting the nerdy parts of Pakistan cricket. Couple of suggestions. Please do an episode where some of us tragics share their experiences of watching these great spells and how they impacted our lives. Great Podcast guys. I think the book you were mentioning is Wasim & Waqar: Imran's Inheritors. I need to find a digital copy of that! Lost my hardcover
Great show guys and i'll be tuning in to more. Watched the Wasim, Waqar and Shoaib videos you've made today. Exceptional! Great analysis and perspective from an educated duo of fans but please remember his 7 for and 6 for (possibly in consecutive matches) v England and Australia in the natwest series later in his career in 2000/2001. Both different types of spells. Outswing v England with the new ball and splattering stumps at the back end v Australia. I still remember him ripping out Brett Lee's stumps. Great send off too. He went back to county cricket and won glamorgan the county championship single handedly (first and only time in their history?). Later waqar became a very good outswing bowler with the new ball and was still good enough with the old ball as reverse was in his blood. 2001 test when he got Atherton and Thorpe through sheer will to win before Saqi bowled all those magical doosras from 19 yards. I'm not saying Waqar was as deadly in the late 90's early 2000's but people overlook his contributions in that period because he was a victim of his own crazy success early in his career. I'm sure he must've got over 150 wickets in both tests and odi's in during those 5 years at around 27 in both formats. Thats Starc, Johnson, Gillespie, Boult, Morkel ball park lads. I won't compare to anderson and broad just due to volume of wickets but similar average and i'm sure a much better strike rate. Still better than Lee, Ntini, Zaheer Khan and Vaas even past his peak and they were borderline world class bowlers. Not too shabby especially as he missed alot of cricket in odi's due to the alrounder strategy with Razzaq and Mehmood. He should've played more tests in that time. Selection or politics or both cost him being Pakistan's leading test wicket taker. I am a Wasim fan if i have to choose one but why should we even have to. We had them both. In his peak though tobah tobah tubahi hi tubahi
This tournament was the first time we saw speed guns. And by far Waqar was the fastest. He was constantly touching mid 150Kms. The fastest Donald bowled was 144. Remember this tournament had Wasim Ambrose Walsh Bishop Patterson etc..
I think guys its a myth that Waqars performance declined in ODIs after his injury in 95. Out of the 13 five wicket hauls (highest ever in history) 6 came 96 onwards. Against Sri & NZL in 96, Ind in 2000, Eng & Aus in 2001, SAF in 2002.
I used to watch all tests and ODI's live in the 90's. Whenever in a game 40+ runs were required in the last 10 overs of an ODI, I always believed and told my friends that Pakistan is going to win. At 90% times Waz and Wiki never disappointed me.
To ms this was the second best spell in ODIs of Waqar. The first one was in Karachi 1990 against WI. He got Richardson Haynes Lara Logie and Hooper in a single spell and won Pak the match out of nowhere. Especially the ball to Logie was the fastest ball i ever saw on the cricket field.
I have never judged anyone as hard as I have judged Osman's Quinoa pulao! That said, you guys are doing an exceptional job with this. I found myself replying to you guys out loud more than once. Office colleagues have another validation that I am mental, I guess...
I remember Trevor quirk in the commentary box saying that Waqar was constantly bowling in mid to late 150kms. Randomly the pace was shown on TV screen.
This guy is saying he did not know waqar's spell i mean he player 262 odis taking 416 wickets untill now holding highest 5 wickets haul in odis And 373 wickets in 84 tests with 24 wickets haul and 4 10 wickets hauls in tests he was a match winner.
@Batta Fast .. Even though I agree that Wasim was a magician with the ball, and the best fast bowler Pakistan has produced in terms of his skill set and longevity. But Waqar was the best thing that happened to Pakistani cricket back in the early 90s and should have gotten more respect. His bowling record in both ODI and test is marginally superior compared to Wasim in terms of what he has delivered over the period of his entire career, not just his peak... (13 x 5 wickets still an ODI record). He was a monster till 1995, as we all agreed, but even during the 2nd phase of his career from 1996 onwards, and wasn't too far behind despite all the injuries and politics .. Let me give you some context... Post 1995 in Test Matches - Waqar Younis played 49 test matches and took 173 wickets @26 runs/wkt and SR of 49 - Wasim Akram, during this era, played 47 test matches and took 170 @24 runs/wkt and SR of 57 Similar number of test matches and a similar number of wickets, Wasim had a little better Avg, but Waqar had a much better SR Post 1995 in ODI - Waqar Younis played 150 ODI matches and took 229 wickets @25 run/wkt and SR of 31 - Wasim Akram, during this era, played 163 ODI matches and took 220 @25 run/wkt and SR of 37 Wasim played more ODIs, and took fewer wickets, with both having the similar averages, and Waqar's SR is Much better :) So, please explain that in terms of just the outcome..... how can we say that Wasim was superior post-1995, and Waqar wasn't??? You said you haven't seen much of Waqar's outstanding spells (at his peek), so I guess you haven't watched the following pre-injury series - 1989/1990 NZ and WI series - Australasia Cup 1989 - 92 England tour - Hamilton test 1993 - Sharjah cups between 1990-1995 - NZ tour of 1994 - SA and WI tour of 1993 - Kandy test 1994 - Karach test vs Australia 1994 and many, many more ..... Waqar has a solid record against India in the ODI that Pakistan and India used to play in the 1990s. We all know Pakistan and India never played test cricket for 10 years; that was most of Waqar's career... I agree that 92 WC was Waqar's tragic omission, but he would have been a monster in that tournament had he played. 1996 QF was the lowest point in his career, but a few bad games here and there and some lowlights shouldn't define his overall career !!!
This is the best explanation given about wasim vs waqar. Personally, I also believe waqar was more destructive than the wasim on the pitch. Mind you how wasim side lined waqar during playing days out of jealousy.
Would love you to discuss Gul's 5-6 against NZ in 2009. World cup on the line, the Sri Lanka attack took place earlier that year and seeing a Pakistani fast bowler nailing Yorkers created a sense of calm that not all's wrong.
Ok done with all the episodes of Batta fast, took me a weekend but well worth it. Both are goats when it comes to pakistan cricket and pak pop culture.
Nice podcasts , love listening to you guys! I think you should do the same for some iconic innings from Pakistani batsmen! And should do some podcast going through World Cup performances and selections! And on some players that should have played more! I realy think osman should become a commentator, would much rather listen to you then bazid khan!
This podcast has been nothing but exceptional since I started listening but I may have to stop now that I've learned Osman eats his pilau with quinoa 🤢🤢
Great stuff guys. I have a question that I can’t answer cause it’s before my time. When we pick a best 11 , we imagine players at their peak provided the peak lasted a significant duration. So while overall trajectory of wasim career eclipses waqar does peak waqar beat wasim. Even more is peak waqar the best bowler ever. Would appreciate if you guys took questions.
Guys I just discovered your channel recently, first all I recognise the great sports journalist osman samiuddin cause for years I read your quality articles on cricinfo. Osman where have you disappeared, why don't you write for cricinfo anymore.? Secondly with all due respect to gentleman doing the episode with you osman, I think he doesn't remember waqar's outstanding performances in tests ( VS Nzld, west Indies) between 1990-1993 period, the 1990 home test series vs Nzld which featured Martin crowe waqar bagged 30 wickets in 3 test matches then the Australia-Asia cup in shariah in 1990 where waqar bagged 17 wickets in 4 matches ( 4 vs India, 5 vs NZLD, 6 vs Sri Lanka & 2 vs Australia in the final)..The 1991 home test series vs Sri Lanka Plus 1992 test series vs Eng, the one off test vs NZLD also in 1992/93 period, the Tri series in south africa which you two are discussing, 1994 6 match Odi series vs NZLD, the 2 ODI Tri series held in 1995 & 1996 in south africa, the home test series vs Australia in 1994, the away test series vs Australia in 1995, the away test series vs England 1996.... Osman please correct me but from what I know waqar younis has taken 5 wicket hauls 13 times in ODIs and 20 plus 4 wicket hauls... More then any fast bowler in history of the game. Osman you correctly saud waqar younis in his prime between 1989-1995 was unplayable. I feel the brother doing this episode with you don't know much about waqar. I was 13 years old in 1991. I remember waqar younis early career very clearly.
Fazal Mehmood - Elvis Presley Imran Khan - The Beatles Sarfraz Nawaz - The Yardbirds Waseem Akram - Led Zeppelin Waqar Younis - Black Sabbath Shoaib Akhtar - Metallica Muhammad Aamir - Niravana Muhammad Asif - Opeth Umar Gul - Creed Junaid Khan - Crossfade Wahab Riaz - Korn Shaheen Shah - Linkin Park Haris Rauf - Slipknot Naseem Shah - Greta Van Fleet 😎🫡
I remember 5-52 against the full strength west indies. Waqar went for 21 in his first 3 overs and then destroyed the windies with 5 wickets on the way back in his 2nd spell.
Guys, Asha was the far more polished performer in the basics of the art form. Taking nothing away from Wasim in terms of swing, but hear this and tell me if this isn't Waqar. ruclips.net/video/3Q2lTxX6Hg8/видео.html

Loved it! Now please do a Waqar interview!
I used to watch all tests and ODI's live in the 90's. Whenever in a game 40+ runs were required in the last 10 overs of an ODI, I always believed and told my friends that Pakistan is going to win. At 90% times Waz and Wiki never disappointed me.
Waqar was bowling in 150's in that series
To ms this was the second best spell in ODIs of Waqar.
The first one was in Karachi 1990 against WI.
He got Richardson Haynes Lara Logie and Hooper in a single spell and won Pak the match out of nowhere.
Especially the ball to Logie was the fastest ball i ever saw on the cricket field.
i saw that live... still the best fast bowler in my life
👍
You live in Karachi brother ?
I have never judged anyone as hard as I have judged Osman's Quinoa pulao!
That said, you guys are doing an exceptional job with this. I found myself replying to you guys out loud more than once. Office colleagues have another validation that I am mental, I guess...
we trust your mental health you're a pak cricket fan afterall
Absolutely brilliant run out description.
I remember Trevor quirk in the commentary box saying that Waqar was constantly bowling in mid to late 150kms.
Randomly the pace was shown on TV screen.
This guy is saying he did not know waqar's spell i mean he player 262 odis taking 416 wickets untill now holding highest 5 wickets haul in odis
And 373 wickets in 84 tests with 24 wickets haul and 4 10 wickets hauls in tests he was a match winner.
Post 1995 in Test Matches
- Waqar Younis played 49 test matches and took 173 wickets @26 runs/wkt and SR of 49
- Wasim Akram, during this era, played 47 test matches and took 170 @24 runs/wkt and SR of 57
Similar number of test matches and a similar number of wickets, Wasim had a little better Avg, but Waqar had a much better SR
Post 1995 in ODI
- Waqar Younis played 150 ODI matches and took 229 wickets @25 run/wkt and SR of 31
- Wasim Akram, during this era, played 163 ODI matches and took 220 @25 run/wkt and SR of 37
Wasim played more ODIs, and took fewer wickets, with both having the similar averages, and Waqar's SR is Much better :)
So, please explain that in terms of just the outcome..... how can we say that Wasim was superior post-1995, and Waqar wasn't???
You said you haven't seen much of Waqar's outstanding spells (at his peek), so I guess you haven't watched the following pre-injury series
- 1989/1990 NZ and WI series
- Australasia Cup 1989
- 92 England tour
- Hamilton test 1993
- Sharjah cups between 1990-1995
- NZ tour of 1994
- SA and WI tour of 1993
- Kandy test 1994
- Karach test vs Australia 1994
and many, many more .....
1996 QF was the lowest point in his career, but a few bad games here and there and some lowlights shouldn't define his overall career !!!
very glad that the Waqar stans have arrived
well said!
This is the best explanation given about wasim vs waqar. Personally, I also believe waqar was more destructive than the wasim on the pitch. Mind you how wasim side lined waqar during playing days out of jealousy.
Would love you to discuss Gul's 5-6 against NZ in 2009. World cup on the line, the Sri Lanka attack took place earlier that year and seeing a Pakistani fast bowler nailing Yorkers created a sense of calm that not all's wrong.
great shout
One correction brothers. It was not the last days of Wasims captaincy. He captained in the following WI tour and later that year against Zimbabwe.
Stories we loves to hear.
I loves to hear Stories from Ahmer since 2022 Fifa World Cup.
Ok done with all the episodes of Batta fast, took me a weekend but well worth it. Both are goats when it comes to pakistan cricket and pak pop culture.
Good going guys, keep it up.
Nice podcasts , love listening to you guys! I think you should do the same for some iconic innings from Pakistani batsmen! And should do some podcast going through World Cup performances and selections! And on some players that should have played more! I realy think osman should become a commentator, would much rather listen to you then bazid khan!
Waqar was Junoon first two albums. After his Injury he was more like Sajjad Ali. Hit all the notes .
Sajjad Ali is Junoon's ustad. So may be a bad analogy.
This podcast has been nothing but exceptional since I started listening but I may have to stop now that I've learned Osman eats his pilau with quinoa 🤢🤢
Waqar had some great spells in England in 96
Great stuff guys.
Peak Waqar was the most destructive force in cricket. Including WI fearsome foursome
haven't seen enough of peak waqar to say but i think osman implied as such in the pod
Mohammad Rafi and Kishore Kumar is an analogy for Wasim vs Waqar that would be interesting on who is who
Guys I just discovered your channel recently, first all I recognise the great sports journalist osman samiuddin cause for years I read your quality articles on cricinfo.
Ahmer Bhi ❤❤❤
Watched this game on neighbours wanna be dish antenna LNBs etc.
What an era that was
THE FOOD REFRENCES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ironically, the only thing I remember from that match is THAT runout :D
impossible to forget!!!!
PIPY was a great concept too
You had to talk about Wasim most of the time but not Waqar when you were doing Wasim episode😡😡😡 (Yes I'm a Waqar>Wasim guy)
Still loved it
hahahaha glad to hear
Sick episode as usual, may I ask where is that cricketers singing qawali poster from?
by an artist named Digink
Fazal Mehmood - Elvis Presley
Imran Khan - The Beatles
Sarfraz Nawaz - The Yardbirds
Waseem Akram - Led Zeppelin
Waqar Younis - Black Sabbath
Shoaib Akhtar - Metallica
Muhammad Aamir - Niravana
Muhammad Asif - Opeth
Umar Gul - Creed
Junaid Khan - Crossfade
Wahab Riaz - Korn
Shaheen Shah - Linkin Park
Haris Rauf - Slipknot
Naseem Shah - Greta Van Fleet
😎🫡
That Rhodes run out reminds me of klusener run out! I think that was something s Africa did in their Fixed matches!
Waseem had only one memorable spell in wolrd cup.. can you tell more?
West of time to watch u
No Imran spell yet? 82-83 vs India perhaps or maybe 1987 headingly?
Sydney Jan 1977
I remember 5-52 against the full strength west indies. Waqar went for 21 in his first 3 overs and then destroyed the windies with 5 wickets on the way back in his 2nd spell.
35 five wickets haul. Most by any fast bowler of pakistan.
Osman should just cough.....
Guys, Asha was the far more polished performer in the basics of the art form. Taking nothing away from Wasim in terms of swing, but hear this and tell me if this isn't Waqar. ruclips.net/video/3Q2lTxX6Hg8/видео.html
good call sir!

Can we please talk about best centuries, Shahid Afridi’s massacre in Kanpur vs India
3 episodes ki series hogi - pakistani batting se sirf aik maa hi pyar ker sakti hai
@@BattaFast😂😂 absolutely
