- Adhesive Vinyl for Decals. Removable Vinyl or Permanent Vinyl . . which to use? And how to apply vinyl decals to glass, painted surfaces, metal, and plastic.
In this video I go over the basics of the two types of vinyl, how to apply vinyl decals, and which type, permanent or removable, to use on different surfaces. I also do a little experiment to see if permanent can be removed as easily as removable after 24 hours.

Thank you for taking the time to do this. This was exactly what I needed.
You’re so welcome!😊
This was very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to explain the differences. 😊 I look forward to the final results.
Thanks so much I’m so glad this was helpful!!🙂
This was very informative. At least for me! I'm a newbie on this vinyl thingy. Thank you!!👌🏼😊😊
Thank you I’m so glad the video was helpful!!
This video is soooooo helpful. Other similar videos were useless. Either gave too much info or not enough.
You’re awesome thank you for all your help and ideas!
Thank you so much for the sweet comment! I’m so glad these are helpful!!
Great information, thank you Christie!
Thanks so much Li!!
Thank you for a video that got right to the point and was very helpful
You’re welcome thanks!
want to congratulate you for your constant contributions in everything you publish. Perhaps, as the vast majority do, we watch many videos without being too aware of their authors. But when you repeatedly get just what you were looking for, curiosity is born to know who is behind those valuable contents. Valuable for a person who is just beginning and they are of great help and motivation to continue. From Panama I send you a tremendous thank you for your time and I hope you continue teaching us for much more.
Pd. Pls. If is it possible. Speak a little slowly. Thinking in people who don't speak native English. Tks
How nice thank you so much for the comment! I will definitely remember to speak more slowly for you to understand. Thank you so much for watching the videos!
Hi Christy very helpful information thank you
So glad it was helpful!!
Thank you. Very informative

Love this!! Thanks soo much!!
You’re so welcome!!😊
Thank you for the explanation. Just got my cricut explorer air 2 and was debating if I should buy permanent or removable vinyl.
You’re so welcome! Glad this was helpful!!
Thank you
Ahhhh thank you for this
Thank you to that video. I have a cricut maker 3 and a project that is 5'3'' long which goes on a car. I can't use the oracal 751 permanent vinyl because the project is too long for a use with the machine mat. I don't have much information about cricut materials and want to ask if I can use the cricut smart vinyl permanent (without a machine mat) for that. Can I remove the permanent vinyl after a few years from the car with no problem or do I have leftovers? Thank you for your help so far.
Would the temp/removable vinyl be good for vehicles. I am looking for a solution to protect the doors on my truck which are non-metal, I wanted to use magnetic vinyl but doesn’t stick.
I'm new and overwhelmed but want to start a business with my cricut. I wish I could talk to you on a regular basis
Hi. It can be overwhelming at first I do remember! You can always leave questions or comments here or on my Instagrm page!
Likewise
Im starting now and its a lot to learn I WISH THERE WERE STEP BY STEP CLASSES OR COURSES OR SOMEONE TO TEACH ME because it’s too much lol…how’s your business doing??
This video was very helpful. Thank you. I have been planning on getting Cricut permanent vinyl for outdoor project. How long will it last in the weather...rain , snow? Thank you.
Hi! So glad the video was helpful! Permanent is suppose to last years, I have not tested it against years but it does last thru weather and sun. Actually, weather and especially sun makes it almost glued on. On glass and smooth surfaces it will last longer than on wood or porous surfaces. Hope that helps!
Christy Cain - The Appalachian Home Yes that does help. Thank you so much. I am definitely going to try it. Have a great day!
Hi,can you Plse answer when to use stencil on wood sign (including farm house sign and other signs) and when to to use decals.
Hi! I use decals most of the time because they save time. Stenciling is nice if you want a really flat finish, or if you can’t find a certain color of vinyl. I recently stenciled a sign that had gold sparkly lettering and I couldn’t find the exact color of vinyl the client wanted. You can create a more rustic look with paint than with vinyl, and create splatter marks and weathered looks with paint as well, so it really just depends on what look you’re going for.👍🏻
I literally just bought my Cricut and my question is, if it's permanent and you were able to peel it off like that, how will it stand up on a truck window or a kitchen mug?
Will it come off when you clean those things?
Thank you for helping me understand 🙂
Hi! It is suppose to take a few days for the permanent to set. But I have washed mugs, plastic cups, and left decals on my car thru rain and sun that stay really well. Unless you pry it off it seals itself well from moisture and heat.👍🏻Dishwashers may be harder on items tho🤔
@@AppalachianHomeCo thank you 🙂
Great video, thanks! I sell vinyl decals in my Etsy shop, and I'm wondering if you would be ok with me sharing your link with customers, as a tutorial for applying their decals? Thanks again!
Thanks so much! Sure that would be great!
Good stuff, thank you 🙏🏼
Thank you!
Thank you. 😊
Hi there. I am wondering if you have any videos on the Original Cricut Cutter. I just bought vinyl and transfer paper so I am wondering what I do now.
Hi! My first cutter was the Explore Air 2, I think I have a few earlier ones using that machine. I do not have any experience with any older Cricut cutters so sorry about that!
I'd was thinking of using the Oracle 631 removable vinyl to decorate the floor with music notes at my piano recital. How difficult is it to remove & can I reuse them?
Hi! The 631 would be great for that sort of decal. It’s not hard to remove but sometimes it can get brittle in colder temps. If that happens I use a hair dryer to warm it up when removing. It makes the material very pliable and removes so much easier. 👍🏻
@@AppalachianHomeCo Hi Christy thank you for the great lesson using both types of vinyl.
I made a decal to apply on a golf cart.
Will the rubbing alcohol hurt the bright surface?
Also when using acetone to remove an old decal will it hurt the surface?
Thank you for your reply.
@@tammybrandt3703 Hi! Rubbing alcohol shouldn’t hurt the surface but you can use soap and water in it’s place and then rinse. I do know fingernail polish remover ruins surfaces 😬 especially plastic so don’t use that to remove old decals. Try a hair dryer lightly on old decal residue and then scrape off with a plastic card or squeegee I have done that before. Hope that helps!
I thought I had watched all your videos ,this one however slipped through the net .Can I ask if you are making a decal to put on a car window would you put on the outside or inside . If you put on inside would you have to mirror it .I hope this makes sense .Thank you .
Hi! I have had decals on the inside and outside of my car so either ways works, you can see them better on the outside I think. And you are totally right, you would mirror the image if you are placing them in the inside.👍🏻
@@AppalachianHomeCo Thank you .Can’t wait for your next videox
Woukd you use renewable or permanent vinyl in a cricuit joy for pantry labels
Hi! I would use temporary vinyl, it really does adhere well and last great too. That way you can remove without no problem!
Will the removable vinyl be okay for wood Christmas ornaments. I just did some and they look really good, but afraid the vinyl won't last. Can I spray them to help them last longer? Thank you for your time and help.
Hi! Yes you can spray them with acrylic sealant, just be sure the vinyl is stuck completely down or the sealant will curl your vinyl.
@@AppalachianHomeCo thank you so much. Will that help the removable vinyl last longer? Love your videos.
I know we're not supposed to "seal" permanent vinyl, but I'd like to make the edges of the lettering less prominent. (on wood)
Is there SOMETHING we can use as a final clear topcoat over permanent vinyl?? (PS... it will be an outdoor sign)
Any luck Rob?
wondering what mat and setting to use for Oracal 638 on my Cricut Maker...?
Hi! I use premium vinyl setting and "more" for the pressure. You might want to test cut and if that doesn't cut well use the outdoor vinyl setting on normal pressure.
If you epoxy over there removable vinyl would that work fine for trays and tumblers and such?
It should work fine but I haven’t used epoxy over vinyl myself. I would make sure your letters are stuck down really well. Sealant sometimes will curl the vinyl if it isn’t down well. You could try testing the vinyl in the epoxy to make sure it reacts ok 👌
Did the removable vinyl work for you with epoxy on top?
Hi, what are your print settings for printing on this cricut vinyl? I have the same vinyl, but when I use my ink jet printer on it, it smears and prints strangely
Hi. You’ll want to use printable adhesive vinyl, there is a difference if you want to print on it from regular adhesive vinyl. If you are using printable vinyl check to make sure your image is in cmyk color mode. That prints the closest to what you see on your screen. Hope that helps!
Christy Cain - The Appalachian Home Thank you so much!!!
Does anyone know what the actual settings are for the Cricut Air Explore, I can't find a setting for the Premium Vinyl-Removable.
Just Vinyl
@@sanchellshelton1925 Thanks
Wait...Looks like they're both still removable but i want it to stay permanently on a plastic cup, how do i make that happen using the permanent vinyl? How many washes does the permanent vinyl last on plastic cups?
Yes they do still look removable. I will be posting a video showing how they remove after a month and I will say that on plastic the temporary vinyl came off easily, and the permanent came off about the same only a bit more stuck, but with no residue. I have had a plastic cup of my daughter’s that has lasted about 6 months with temp vinyl, the end of a long swash came loose only recently. That’s with hand washing only, no dish washer. After removing both types I would say permanent probably lasts twice as long but definitely not completely permanent! Hope that helps a bit! If you want a more permanent adhesion I would check into heat transfer vinyl. You can iron on heat transfer to tumblers and things using a mug press and maybe ever a hand held press but haven’t tried it myself.🤔
Why you can remove the decals on permanent? Or did you switch them accidentally? Oh you can still removed the permanent. What if i dont wanna removed it once I put it on? Like on mug, or glass? Does it stays there longer? Or what should used? Im new to cricut or vinyl.just got my cricut machine last christmas 2021.
Hi! Yes permanent can be removed, but it does stay on longer than temporary. For totally permanent placement, I recommend iron on material instead of vinyl.
Can you use removable vinyl on metal tumblers if they are hand washed?
Hi! I have used removable vinyl on washed items, and soap will break down the corners after some time, much more that permanent vinyl. If you want a permanent adhesion I wouldn't use removable.👍
i have tons of problems getting my vinyl to stick to the medium grip transfer tape.... do you have a tip?
Hi. What kind of tape do you use? I use Greenstar Layflat Clear Medium Tack and haven’t had issues with that brand so far and I rub down the decal really well before removing the backing.
@@AppalachianHomeCo thanks, I was using glitter vinyl and found out that I need to use permanent tape instead of regular tape. Thanks for answering! I am new to this! But love it!
Does removeable vinyl stay stuck once its on or does it come off over time?
I want to know that too
I liked your video. As someone who views all the items I intend to make as permanent, I am really at a loss for what removable is for. I accidentally purchased 2 rolls thinking they were regular and now I am stumped as to what to do with them. Any suggestions?
Hi! I mainly use temporary vinyl for decals on things like interior walls or doors, I sell wash and dry decals for washer and dryer doors that I use temp for. I also use it for seasonal things like window decals at Halloween. And then I do use it to test decals before I sell them lol. Other than that I don't use it ...🙂
What kind is best for pop sockets ? Or does it matter because ima end up putting resin on top please reply or can someone help
Hi I would use permanent even tho you are using resin ... the temporary tends not to be as sticky and could come loose while you are applying the resin.
@@AppalachianHomeCo thank you so much for your help ☺️
if i put permanent decals on my paint on my car will it take the paint with it when i remove it?
Hi it probably won’t take off the paint but will most likely leave a residue if you leave it on for a good while. I’ve not tested permanent on car paint left out for a long period of time. I use temporary vinyl on my car and it has stayed really well.
Can you use a inject printer to print on circuit permanent premium vinyl?
has to be printable vinyl
Hi! No you would need to use printable vinyl with a printer.
My removable vinyl doesn't seem sticky on the back, I can't seem to get it to stick to anything; my board, fingers, table... nothing. Am I doing something wrong?
Hmmm... what kind are you using? Some brands aren’t as sticky as others...
@@AppalachianHomeCo we figured out the problem, some heat transfer type got mixed in with the removable kind. :)
So, they are both the same if they peel off easily??? HOW can I put a vinyl on glass cups or tumblers without removing easily every time I wash them????? Which one do I use and how to cure to last a long time??????
Hi! I would just wait a day or two before washing the glasses or tumblers. Note that permanent vinyl is not dishwasher safe due to the high heat so it may peel if you put it in the dishwasher. I have had cups last for a couple years tho just by hand washing so you should be good. Definitely use the permanent kind on glasses and tumblers instead of temporary...temporary vinyl will definitely start to peel up at the corners after a few weeks of washing. Hope that helps!
can this permanent vynil can be used on fabrics ?
Hi. This permanent vinyl is not for use with fabric. You’ll want heat transfer vinyl (HTV) for use with fabric. I have a video using it on a shirt if u want to see how to use it. I purchase a brand called Siser Easyweed HTV and it’s the best I have tried.
I’m new at this I haven’t even made one yet. I’m confused with what the permanent vinyl is for? I don’t print my own decals yet I purchase them.
Hi! Permanent vinyl is just decal sticker material that lasts longer than temporary vinyl. Temporary vinyl comes off easily from walls and surfaces, but permanent is a little harder to get off. I purchase permanent vinyl in 12" rolls from Amazon, thats a good place to get materials when you're just starting. Oracal 651 and TeckWrap brand is my favorite, available is tons of colors.
@@AppalachianHomeCo okay so I would apply the permanent vinyl to my deal stickers the same why I apply the transfer paper? I appreciate any advice more than you know
Was there an update?
Hi I started filming an update but there was literally no difference in the vinyls when I went to remove them lol. I still have them all after all this time so i will post an update .
I dont need to use a heat gun to help it stick better?
Hi! It does seem to help a bit if I am having trouble getting the vinyl to stick to painted signs, but I don’t need one usually.
If you use removable Vinyl on a water bottle can you seal it to make it permanent
Hi..I have use clear permanent film to cover but it does change the appearance. I would suggest epoxy, or a non-toxic version of epoxy, to seal.
Can this one be used on shirts?
Hi! Adhesive vinyl is not for fabrics.... you will want to use heat transfer vinyl for t-shirts and things.
How the hell are you getting your design to come off the backing so easily? I struggle to the point of just giving up.
Can you get this at hobby lobby??
Hi. Yes you can get Cricut vinyl and I believe one other kind of vinyl (The Paper Shoppe brand?) but I haven’t seen Oracal there at least at my local store.
Did you do a video for a month later and removing them?
I was planning to do the video later and my husband started using my cup lol. I will do an update tho!
@@AppalachianHomeCo did you do an update? I was looking for that one month after video as well.
Permanent venyl can be applied in fabric?
Hi you would need iron on vinyl (HTV) for fabric.... it is different from adhesive vinyl.👍🏻
@@AppalachianHomeCo thank you 🌺
Channel should be. Christy Can. That's what I thought it said lol
That's hilarious 😆
