Fighting Games Go For a Walk

- Mortal Kombat, Soulcalibur, Tekken, Brawl:
all of them have an adventure mode.
These single player modes aren't that great, and they aren't terrible - they're just weird and confusing. Let's dive into the wonderful world of each respective game.
Uncover thrilling solo gameplay in your favourite worlds. Watch their integrity writhe in pain on the floor as the developers attempt to turn 3d and 2d fighters into action games.
Oh yeah, I'm aware that Legends isn't canon btw

How about shaolin monks? X'D
I thought I entered the second part of dmc video but I didn't realise it until half the video
I really loved Brawl's Subspace Emissary. The cutscenes weren't particularly over-complicated, but were appropriately epic for the characters involved. It was a ton of fun!
Honestly the only real mistake in Subspace, if you ask me, was creating an original set of enemies. Instead of putting the dev time into those random enemies, just take enemies from the games. Imagine Earthbound enemies fighting alongside Sonic enemies. It'd be hilarious to fight, a lot more fun.
I mean at least they got the Mario enemies.
They got it right in smash run, nearly perfected Subspace game mode, then...we got World of Light.
@@xdjrunner special smash battle gallery
I wish Subspace and World of Light went on for less time.
"its not representative of the franchise it came from" said while displaying ivy butt. the best representation of the franchise
And then there's Shaolin Monks, wich is actually my favourite MK related game.
And Guilty Gear got Overture, wich...wasn't THAT bad....okay, it was that bad. At least the soundtrack is godlike, but that's just GG.
I actually enjoyed Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero.
...I'll see myself out.
Shaolin Monks fucking rocked!
@@Ponaru Good Futa, you'll have a treat soon for your responsible actions.
Judgment though... god no
MK Special Forces. I beat it as a child. I have autism ever since.
I forgot soulcalibur legends existed until this video
Jonathan Gleason you can find a review on the playlist.
ok subspace was pretty awesome
You know, I think i get bored when I'm not fighting a human 90% of the time
I guess I just like seeing a story with some of my favorite characters in it
I'm sorry to say KBash but maybe single player modes in games in general isn't your thing. You're more a moba player.
"Pretending Tekken even deserves a plot."
opinion disregarded
"or kill him with consecutive uppercuts"
So just like Mishima combos then
Going to be honest, I loved Konquest mode in the 3D MKs, they were so interesting and felt so fresh in comparison to arcade based story modes. GG, Soul Calibur, Tekken 5 and MK were the only games before MK9 I recall having a fleshed out story mode. Armageddon and Devil Within respectively were the most fun, but GG had the best story, if you can understand it.
"Today On KBash we play Sonic The Fighters"
Make it happen
oh i get it the fighting games actually go and take a walk
Took me while
Shaolin Monks was pretty boss though.
lol, it is THE BOSS. i never a huge fan of fighting games myself, so i kinda a bit bias lol
its good except for making P1 and P2 share health. makes the game unplayable sometimes.
Boy you're lucky you didn't mention Tekken 3's Tekken Force or else you woulda been in a whole lot of trouble
Atmos Fabula tekken force in Tekken 7, a dream that will never be reality :/
@@radoslav6861 I just want an HD Re-release of Tekken 3, dude.
All I want
Atmos Fabula i would prefer a T5DR :O
@@radoslav6861 You are objectively wrong, please refrain from not worshipping Tekken 3
Atmos Fabula but Kazuya isn’t in Tekken 3
Funny as always kbash.
Really appreciate that you try and put up games that not literally every person tries to review.
Keep it fresh kbash, you're awesome
why you always yelling? I’m right here
Heterochromia in Japanese media is the one thing that oddly turns me off to partaking in it. Every character I've seen who has it always has the personality of a soggy piece of cardboard in an alleyway after a torrential rainstorm of piss from 4 different hobos.
Except for best Waifu, Lady from DMC
@@EliasCassab Lady is best wife
Zurgo Pussysmasher As long as you’re not Dante
Im gonna remember that one lmao
4:47 when someone's never played MOTHER 3.
For someone who prefers subspace over the overly repetitive adventure mode in the new smash bros. I share some of the same common problems as you mentioned. pretty good video
I still wish there was a fighting game that handled arena combat like a Power Stone or Star Ocean 3 but played and controlled like Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry. Then it could handle complexity and exploration without having to half ass it. At least in theory.
I was surprised to see this quality content had less than atleast 500k views. Keep it up man! I believe!
Start of the video: "Fighting games need to have more than just the boring fighting modes for braindead casuals."
End of the video: "Fighting games need to just focus on the primary fighting modes because I like mashing it out with my friends."
"What the heck do you mean MK Shaolin Monks exists? What do you mean Tekken Force mode allows you to use a character's Full Moveset in a new Beat 'Em Up environment? What do you mean the entire identity of classic 1P Soul Calibur is to read "boring text" to get pretense before a fight? What do you mean Melee's Adventure Mode and Smash 3DS's Smash Run exists?"
I liked some of your past videos, but this effort was definitely weak. Fair points for the games displayed, but you're doing a disservice to the ones noticeably unmentioned and making the non-FG fans that can't do their own research believe that extra modes in FGs weren't ever worth checking out. If that were objective truth, so many fans wouldn't have been pissing themselves about how barebones console Tekken 7's content was and still is to this day despite the core game being widely praised by critics and fans alike. Regardless of how you feel about the quality, give merit where merit is due.
Entertaining enough video for non-FG fans, so you accomplished that.
An aside; this isn't really any true critique to the main subject of the video, just me being a bitch (feel free to ignore):
Mortal Kombat, you give its lore a pass. The same franchise that, on-screen, kills its characters in the goofiest ways imaginable and got by purely on the insanity of it all. The same MK that retconned Kano's nationality just because of a non-canon movie. The same MK franchise whose most praised story titles, MK 9 and MKX, are rife with terri-bad decisions as far as writing goes (see the 4thSnake's breakdowns for in-depth commentary). The same MK that made Cooking with Scorpion. The same MK that gave us MK4's endings. That franchise's story is alright and should be appreciated for "what it is". But Tekken is just too retarded to get a story, should be ignored entirely.
It's cool to be biased for your favorite game, but have some self-awareness.
The "fighting game stories are pointless... u-unless it's muh NRS" meme needs to die. Bloody Roar 2 and both Rival Schools titles with their interwoven character interaction focus, the entire Soul franchise up until the PS3 era with its descriptive context for even mook battles, Tekken up until the 5th main game with its unpredictable yet pleasurably simple universe and enticing imagery, Evil Zone with its hyper focus on characterization, Garou Mark of the Wolves with its ambiguous leads... Fighting games can have intriguing characters and plots if they're respected enough to be considered. It isn't the genre holding the narrative back. A competent story can be told through any medium. The problem lies in the developers (probably) believing the players don't give a shit (to be fair, most hardcore fans say they don't even if they hypocritically admit that it's a game's personality that draws them) and fans who aren't vocal enough about wanting better rather than wanting it all gone/ignoring it entirely. The "fighting games are just fighting games" stigma is the worst shit to see so widely accepted as a casual fan in 2018. I mean, platformers aren't just "dudes jumping and shooting lemons" for example. No one's going to tell me MegaMan Zero's story isn't worth a damn just because it isn't a book.
I don't scrub through movesets and improve just to go to locals. I do like Kazuya's anti-hero, wild card nature. I do like Siegfried's redemption arc. I do like Hyo's downfall. I do like Shenlong's identity crisis. Liking the characters, whether design or moveset, makes me end up knowing them more than just a nameless bundle of polygons and makes me want to know more about the avatar I'm dumping so many hours into. It's why character loyalists exist even in competitive fields. People just like the character, even if they're bottom-tier trash. And being a "character" implies having a story attached. Hence the fandoms always writing stories and in some cases attempting to bridge the gap between gameplay and narrative.
Anyway, I've veered horribly off topic enough. Cheers.
I know it was a long comment, but I wholeheartedly agree with your overarching point about these modes. They're at least worth checking out when done right, and there a lots of examples that aren't just "adventure mode" (Tekken Bowl, naming one)
Mostly I appreciate your point about these games' narratives taken seriously, as the ones you named definitely have great stories. I'm even a sucker for Tekken's story, not the interwoven/king of the iron fist one, but specifically character endings, which, had their substance for a lot of the characters (Eddy, Steve, King, Jacks, Michelle, Marduk, all to name a few)
Achievement unlocked 500 word essay no one will read
@@rl7_slimkat I read it.
Such a ludicrous over-reaction. It's wasn't some comprehensive genre analysis and it didn't pretend to be that. He didn't have to show all the games, be "objective" and consider the feelings of every fanbase, which lives revolve around certain games - he just showed a few low-effort games he didn't like to make fun of them, is all. Doesn't have anything to do with your religious zealotry, "character loyalism" and stuff like that, lmao.
came to read commentd not books
Shaolin monks is a good game
I always loved these gamemodes, its just a + for fighting games. Everyone can enjoy classic gamemodes, but sometimes it was a nice change of pace to fight through these small campaigns. I miss them.
Remember when putting car smashing and barrel punching in a fighting game seemed like a revolutionary thing :D
"I hope they are happy relegating the franchise to a joke"
That hurt, even if it's the truest statement I've heard about SC for a while.
Yeah, that's not going away any time soon.
I mean even before this there was the ridiculous crossover characters like fucking Darth Vader and Link. I think they were already comfortable being the butt of the joke.
Since when did people take soul calibur ever serious with it's overly absurd premise.
When was it not comedy.
Plus it's fun seeing even more ridiculous custom characters on screen. Doesn't change the gameplay.
HEY! Hey! Hey hey hey hey hey... Tekken does have a plot!
And... it only took Tekken 7 for us to understand it
Tekken has the greatest story because it's not just a bunch of people waiting around to fight each year, they actually have lives.
Finally somebody said it!
You release such good content, how could I not be all over you like (picks any good zinger from the video).
Netherealm studios already talk about a possible Shaolin Monks 2, or a way to incorporate the Konquest mode (Deception's one) with the exploration of the different realms in their future games, so I think you talk a bit too fast
If they made shaolin monks 2, I would cream every where. On everyone.
"Tekken's tryin' to order milk at the bar." (big gasp) LIKE IN MAJORA'S MASK? :D
I'm a sucker for this type of shit. I love Soul Calibur Legends, Mortal Kombat Armageddon's story mode and Brawl's subspace emmisary. Also, I think you should've mentioned the Tekken Force mode for Tekken 3, which is IMO a prime example of this type of shit done well. It's basically a game mode that's designed like a classic beat'em up sidescrolling game but keeps the exact control scheme of the regular fighting game, except you fight multiple enemies at a time which makes you be really aware of your surroundings. I fucking loved that shit as a kid and almost wish it was fully fleshed game.
When the first clip is from MK Armageddon you know the vid is going to be *E P I C*
Not sure how many of this guys videos I have now watched, but definitely earned a subscribe. Keep it up man! your videos have good quality, solid opinions, and a good flow to them. It also doesn't hurt that I keep seeing videos I missed of yours in the suggested bar on the side and seem to always add 2 or 3 to my watch later.
This was two years ago at 10k subs? Now it's July 2021 and you're at 90k subs (100 soon! 🎉).
Your videos are so excellent, I'm gobbling them up day after day. Thank you for your effort and amazing content!
I actually enjoyed tekken 3's tekken force, and even the tekken 6 one, because they did what smash did, you just run around and kill everyone but with the controls from the actual main game, problem with the tekken 6 mode though is that they tried to make it all crazy with setpieces so the camera kind of goes everywhere and they couldn't figure out the controls very well sometimes (lock on being the worst of all) but i think those are interesting, mostly because i'm a big fan of beat em ups like SoR
But, what if they want their fighting game characters to expand beyond fighting games?
I like these game modes. I honestly think they could be done better but as separate modes I like them
You keep doing your thing man, I'll see you again when you hit 100k
I keep saying this...you deserve more subs! Great content!

"There just weren't enough ladders" is so fucking funny to me, someone who made a level called Ladderland in Brawl's level creator when I was a tween. It was exactly what you think it was.
i love the subspace emissary and the weird original characters
On the Topic of Mortal Kombat, The Konquest mode in Deception is way better than armageddon, instead of a Linear 3D Beat em' up thing it's a Semi Open World Adventure RPG mode, with Side Quests to go on, NPCs to talk to, Multiple Realms to explore each with it's own feel and flavor, and more. The Only Downside is that it's part Adventure/story mode, part Tutorial so you have to learn almost every character's move set, combos included which can be difficult. Also Traversing the realms is kind of a pain
Ive recently discovered your channel and im hooked. I love your delivery, confidence, and edits. I love your content and i hope your channel gets bigger :D ive binged your entire video catalog like... 3 times now
I lost it at the random shade thrown at golden sun in the middle of this XD
Don't forget that Mortal Kombat: Armageddon had a kart racing mode that was just diet Mario Kart
it was actually a reskin of a star wars racing game.
MK Armageddon was great.
And there's nothing wrong about using your favourite character in some good old beat em up levels

>Smash
Sohakmet So Tekken can count as a fighting game but not smash ?
@@saiko_oro how is tekken not a fighting game lol
@@saiko_oro Get a load of this guy
@@saiko_oro because Tekken doesn't have platforms, item drops, smash balls(instakill orbs), stage hazards, no health bars, multiple enemies on screen at the same time, ect.
A game where the objective is to fight against other players using movesets filled with punches, kicks and special attacks. Guess it's jump and run or a shoot 'em up then.
I love how he says boy-howdy like Sid from Hey Arnold
In love with your channel dude, can’t wait for you to get the exposure you deserve
even though I don't agree with all of your points I still enjoy watching your videos there high quality and deserve more attention

I’m always excited seeing a new video from you! Good stuff as always, it was lots of fun!
Came across you’re stuff a while ago with the rise of soul calibur video and have been watching since, keep up the great videos dude
I liked Subspace as a kid, but nowadays I agree with the "empty maps and samey enemies" points people bring against it. I think that's why I like World of Light better - it's not trying to be an "adventure mode", its Smash gameplay instead taking the form of themed event matches, so when you play WoL it actually feels like Smash.
never seen any of your vids but I love this one
I loved Armageddon’s campaign when I was a kid
at first i thought you were just another youtube weeaboo gamer who relies on screaming, memes and zany editing, but you actually write pretty good jokes, shows interesting info and makes understandable points. I'm subscribed
So we're just gonna ignore Shaolin Monks, and how awesome it was?
i want a shaolin monks port for pc
While i do not agree that subspace emissary was boring, i accept the difference in our opinions.
Never knew Soulcalibur Legends was a thing...
I like your style. You combine intelligence and humor perfectly!
I actually love your channel honestly and I hope you get more subscribers bc you deserve it!! ❤️
Honestly I'd buy a well made and fleshed out SoulCalibur RPG.

no mention of MK: Shaolin Monks? I finished the adventure mode with my friend, the coop is a blast!
Tekken 3: (Tekken force mode. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟)
Tekken 4: (Tekken force mode.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟)
Tekken 5: (A mode so disgraceful that it wasn't in the PSP version.)
Tekken 6: (A mode that tried too hard to be a epic story. Lars has his place, but we didn't need him to go through all that.)
Tekken 7: (A story mode where we needed our Tekken Force mode the most, not beating up a grunt one at a time and having Lars use a gun.)
Tekken 8: (A story mode where the only good quality will be Jin and Kazuya having their epic battle and Lars will most likely take a back seat because of character popularity.)
Post more often you ain't no johntron lol. Your both great keep it up.
I would if I didn't have so much stuff killing my time -_-"""
Just followed yesterday and ALREADY hooked on all your content :D
I love Urban reign which is like Ike if Tekken had smash controls where there's only an attack, grab, Dodge and run button. It can be also describe as a beat em up mix with a 3d 1v1 like Tekken
I loved subspace, i played the entire thing with my bro
Oh, so that's what that SoulCalibur thing was.
Congrats on the 69k subs(nice)
I feel like this is definately a fair critique but the way I look at it is there all spose to be simple mini games anyways (Aside from Soul Calibur) but sick vid man
Smash Bros Subspace Emissary DID show the stage creator. And that franchise still wants to push the party game aspect as much as, if not more than, the pure fighting game aspect.
I actually like Subspace Emissary.
I feel like no one realized that subspace is just smash run on 3ds with bosses.
*Other way around
Tekken 6 Story mode was pretty fun. Difficult at times but was better than I thought it would be. The format should make a return in T8
You're amazing and deserve more views 😪
As few as 10? Laughs in divekick.
Idc what anyone says but Mortal Kombat Armageddon is my favorite MK game and it has alot to do with konquest and taven and that GODLIKE intro and create a character mini games over 60 freaking characters collectables unlockables ect it's one of my favorite games of all time
You need more publicity dude
That ending is golden
I know this video is old, but might as well comment now because I don't know if it's been commented.
Mortal Kombat has had a pretty involved story since the word Go. It was pretty alright overall and one thing that held interest for the MK fans out there, and it was consistent and not stupidly ridiculous like how Tekken can and has gotten.
Some would even say the reboots have a weaker story, a sentiment that more people agreed on with the release of 11.
Granblue Fantasy Versus did something like this and it kept true to its controls like Brawl and it showed us why no one should ever try this again. Fighting games are just not built for anything else. Unless you're a 3D fighter or basically the thing that people want to compare to a fighting game but the actual FGC will reject.
How is this channel this small with such quality videos? Definitely gained a subscriber. Love me some good ass fighting games and good ole FGC
Just like golden sun? KBash do you know of a golden sun fighting game in the pipeline? Hope it keeps its amazing writing and storytelling

What about SHAOLIN MONKS
I subscribed, mainly cause you sound like an angry Max from the Goofy Movie. That's what's up.
Cool. This made my day.
The problem with these story modes is that people resort to fighting too much. Which is an odd thing to say for fighting games.
“Excuse me, sir, you dropped a dollar. Here you go.”
“Are you talking to me, wimp?”
*FIGHT!*
“What? Why?”
That was fun. Subbed
How to capture a new viewers attention in 4 seconds.
God I fucking loved Soulcalibur Legends back when I got it.
Iska's story with his sister was sad, so he seemed like a really good character (even though he looks stupid)
Thought you were onna talk about story modes that were fight based, like sfv or mvci or tekken. Id like to hear your opinions on thoseat some point!
Urban reign was a good tekken fighter story game, really straightforward plot
The best story mode for a fighting game on a conceptual level is the original blazblu. The entire plot is a Groundhog Day time loop with immortal/outsiders nudging the loop to get a change. All false endings/story modes/ bullshit matches with your buddies where everyone is neon purple are still considered cannon but on a past loop.
Was Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks too good of a game to be here or did you not know of it
