Did all this and mine still kept clicking when turned down to simmer. I had to take out the gas jet, the little brass nut down in the center, and ream it clean with a sewing needle. Just a tiny bit of debris in there means there is not enough gas flow to keep the burner lit when turned to low setting....the igniter senses the lack of flame and tries to constantly relite the burner.

Hi all, need your thoughts. I have a new never used 20 yr old Kenmore gas cook top. The ignitors will not spark unless the knob is turned past the "high" setting. The gas has to travel thru a 3 inch venturi tube. That is a lot of raw gas spewing out before ignition. Is this cook top safe to install in a family home with kids? Please share your thoughts. Txs
@@bobpratt7083 Thanks for watching, any update? By chance were the knobs already installed on cooktop when removing from packaging or did you have to install them? Being new…but 20 years old…it shouldn’t be giving you any issues…unless corrosion has formed inside igniters…but thats unlikely if always kept packaged and never open. Back to the knobs. We have seen in the past that the knobs were installed improperly during the install process. The knobs themselves secure onto a stud, and if not properly aligned…it will lead to issues similar to what you’re experiencing.
@DIYwithMichaelBorders hi, thanks for the reply. Yes, brand new but older model. Knobs on correctly. I am a gas repairman and worked on many appliances. I can not test the cook top. All that I am very concerned about is why did Kenmore design the ignitors to function by turning the knob on fully to 'high" and letting all that raw gas spew into the kitchen prior to lighting. Newer models have the ignitors next to the burners and function as soon as you turn the knob or press down and turn the knob. Txs bob
@DIYwithMichaelBorders not hooked up yet. No gas to it. But I am concerned to install in a family home. I can not contact Kenmore to inquire. Note: nothing is wrong with this new 20 yr old cooktop. It is still laying on my shelf. I can hook it up to propane and turn the knob to "ignite" but that would increase the amount of gas spewing into my basement because the natural gas orifice has a larger hole. It will ignite and I am only concerned with raw gas entering a kitchen before it ignites. There are children in that house. This inquiry is only answered because I need to know if you or someone else are familar with this type of ignition. A poorly designed ignition system. Txs
@ Your thoughts and concerns are valid, legit, and appropriate. Safety is number one, especially having kids in your home. We haven’t operated a cooktop that requires the knobs to be turned to full high in order to engage/activate igniter. Reminds us of a gas grill design…very unique design…🤔
In the end it was easy! The knobs are fixed to the stems with a grub screw so they can't come off. grab one knob pull it up and towards yourself. this seems to make some sort of short circuit and it stops happening. stove works again like normal! Problem fixed! 8

After my cleaning service cleaned the stove top, all the ignitors started sparking. They did not before cleaning and there is no corrosion or dirt buildup. Marianne Smit-la Croix Thanks for watching & sharing your experience. The next troubleshooting step we recommend looking at is your actual Ignition Switch’s. These are located underneath your knobs. does it cause anything bad if you dont stop it?
