  • Burnouts are a very important and beloved part of drag racing. Done properly and consistently they can help you go rounds. In this episode I thought I would go over the how and whys of burnouts.

    Very individual. I don't like doing the "coating" of water in the box as the video shows. What often happens is that there will be splashed water up into the wheel wells. That might drip on to the tire as you are staging. Result is that you blow your tires off. I roll 10 inches past the trough, then do my burnout though the beams. But I'm a bias user and a long fresh patch works for me. If I was running a radial I would probably not run it that long.

      We all do it a bit different. One good easy spin usually does the trick for me.

    Love this video - 2 questions.
    1. How many RPMs would you say are needed for a typical quick burnout to heat drag radials?
    2. Exactly how do you roll out of your burnout (automatic)? Holding brake and throttle, I feel like releasing the brake would send me too fast, too far. Thank you.

      Thanks for watching!
      1.1600-3000 is typical for most cars to do a burnout. However like most automotive things it can vary a bit, tire size to horse power, how sticky the tires are, did you wet them enough in the water box. It’ll take you a few passes to perfect it.
      2. Rolling out of burnout:
      Being able to do this saves parts! So you have the tire spinning good you’re holding a brake and you’re in a throttle.
      First lightly start easing off of the brake. As you feel the car start to go forward start letting off the throttle also very lightly.
      While simultaneously easing back into the brakes then you shouldn’t overshoot the beams.

      @@FabRaceModRepeat thank you for all of this! I actually practiced today as the season starts in less than 2 weeks. Last year I was running on street tires and didn’t need to heat them. Funny thing is, I didn’t even look at my RPMs today, you just feel the tires spin and then let off. It’s going to take a few runs like you said to get the roll out just right. They yell at ya if you burn through the beams! 😂 Thank you so much for your reply!

      That would be a different kind of line lock. That’s typically done with hydraulics and usually hand activated. With one actuator per side.

    Hey guys, Awesome basics lesson! Quick question - What would you look for if your backend is consistently drifting out (to the right) while in a burnout? Tire pressure?

    • @FabRaceModRepeat
      @FabRaceModRepeat  2 года назад

      Sounds like you need a little pre load on the right side.

    • @AB-80X
      @AB-80X Год назад +1

      Pre-load, anti-roll and more importantly, check the run-out. You'd be surprised at how often tires are not the exact same circumference.
      I often ask for the company to check them and send me a matched set if possible.

    Thanks for the video. For a C6 Z06 on original Goodyear F1 tires. Do you recommend doing a burnout for the first time on a track? I know to avoid the water, but is a burnout still a good idea in my case? Thanks.

    • @FabRaceModRepeat
      @FabRaceModRepeat  2 года назад +1

      Great question
      Street tires (not drag radials) even a high end road course style tire like the F1is only going to stick so good to a drag strip.
      You would actually be better off if the track wasn’t prepped. I would do a short burn out, just enough to smoke the tires and compare that run to a run without a burn out. This will give you a baseline. Then adjust from there.

    • @AB-80X
      @AB-80X Год назад +1

      You should not do a real burnout. You can give them a quick peel out where they will haze a bit, but they will get greasy if you smoke them.

      @@FabRaceModRepeat thanks. I forgot to post how it went back in October.
      I had no choice but to go through the water but I did some mini burn outs to clear them off. I was amazed how well the car stuck to the track and I made 6 runs. My biggest issue was playing it too slow with my shifts which is where I lost some time. I also rolled off the line a little slow. I just need practice. I can see why you guys enjoy drag racing. It’s a lot of fun

    Hey do you recommend doing a big burnout for guys running hard tires??? Also what’s the science of letting out some air

    • @FabRaceModRepeat
      @FabRaceModRepeat  Год назад +1

      1. Most modern drag tires don’t really need a big burnout. Sure it looks awesome and the crowd loves it however, it tends to make your tires greasy.
      2. Check the manufacturers suggestion for minimum tire pressure. Go up from there in 2lb increments until your 60 foot drops off. Next go down 1lb The sweet spot will be somewhere in that last 2lb window.
      3. Thanks for watching!!
