On point. When it's not your native language, it can sometimes be hard to express yourself. I agree with you that with practice, you'll become more confident, and your learning curve will improve.
Love what you do man, really inspiring especially given that English is not my first language either and I am really struggling to save my "personality" when I speak it. Anyway, good luck to you with you videos :)
I do think the key for many new creators, especially if one hasn’t had much experience with public speaking and talking about stuff from «a to z» and improvising is that scripting things out, as an exercise in organizing one’s thoughts and expressing those thoughts is a good thing, both to work on vocabulary and not end up calling everything for «things» but also for practicing phrases and types of sentences. Then, as an extension to that, extract bullet points and try to present it using only the bullet points and not the script, and try to improvise when it feels right. Over time the practicing of presenting from bullet points will make a person more confident, and there will be less need for the script as boone grows more experienced and more confident. But the «full script» is for many a good way to get started, especially if one hasn’t very little experience, rather than diving straight into bullet points or a script outline and then get demotivated when everything feels disjointed and a struggle when one tries to improvise. The key to know for those starting out is that bullet points won’t automatically make you better and more «free», it’s a long process like you said, and you have been doing it for several years now, and from that experience and the practicing you have done this comes more easily now, but for someone starting out, doing what you did at first, scripting things out, might be the right way to get going. So like with everything else: try everything and figure out what works better for you, and practice makes perfect(-ish) ;)
I never thought about the who what when why, but that is a really great thing to ask yourself for every video in order because answering those questions is teaching someone something. That's awesome! I don't actively do it thinking specifically who what how why etc. BUT When I make my guitar tutorials I spend a little time talking about WHO the band is WHAT the song is and how I relate to it, which is the WHY, because I love the song and wanted to teach you HOW to play it. All great thoughts Peter. Hope you and the family are doing well, outside of these videos lol
I’m doing both scripting and bullet points. Sometimes scripting works better when there’s a lot of detailed information I need to memorize, whereas bullet points feel more casual but still provide some structure. I think these are just tools, and it’s best to know how to use both to have the most flexibility.
Highly relatable! I'm also Swedish and have been making videos for years as well. Not just here on my own YT channel, but making instructional videos for other businesses, etc. I almost always script my videos and use a teleprompter, which makes it simple to churn out videos, but comes with its own slew of issues... not just the extra rigging of the teleprompter itself, but you can no longer monitor your shot from the flip-out screen, so you need an external one, and so on and on... AND, as a beginner at least; it's pretty obvious when someone is reading from a teleprompter or script, because - just as you touched on, Peter - there's often a disconnect and lack of emotional connection, since you're essentially not saying what's on your mind, but rather what was on your mind yesterday. If that makes any sense. But, whether you prefer to script or not, give it time and you'll get used to it. For me personally, I found that the editing involved in NOT scripting my videos was much more intense and time consuming. I would go off topic, pause to think, rephrase, say "uhmm" way too much, etc. Most likely due to English being a second language, but I'm the same way in Swedish too, so.. Anyway. Sorry for the long post. Here potato. Cheers /Fredrik
There is no need to hide the fact that the words are being read from a script, just make that clear to the audience. Improvisation is a very powerfull skill. I'd say the combination of the two is the best, it doesn't have to be one or the other.
I think your accent is cool. Cool seeing the work space coming together. Good point about scripting vs bullet points. I always enjoy seeing your dad in the videos giving old man humor.
It's so good to hear a Swede actually say it. So many Europeans, and Scandinavians especially, like to let us English speakers think that their English is as good as their native language... Having learnt Swedish to a decent level myself (not to the level of your English though), I know that this is almost never true. Even Pewds still says things that make me think "Aha, your Swedish is showing Felix..." and he's now lived in Britain/Japan for longer than he ever lived in Sweden. Even Lana Blakely has admitted that it affects what she calls her "energy" to speak English... and her English is almost flawless and she does script her videos. What I admire about you, Peter (well, one of the things), is that I know you must be able to hear some of your own small errors when you edit the video... we're talking väldigt små och oviktiga saker bara... but if it were me, it would bother me, not for any rational reason... just because I like to be "right". But you prioritise the feel that you had on camera... which is good, because it's a great feel. I hope this all made sense haha.
I usually do scripted videos at work, but re-starting my channel now I’m trying to be more natural and do it unscripted for all my next videos! It was cool to see how you do it! Thanks for sharing Peter!
The space is insane! Done some impressive work. Will enjoy seeing it refined over the years. I am in this boat at the moment of scripting vs not scripting. Think I have settled on some bullet points, as I found when I was doing my podcast that I would listen back and miss points and I found it mentally hard to get over not having a consistent edit (even with just audio only). I preferred a one take off the cuff style approach which mostly worked.
What a great video. Love how you put it together. Interesting thing I found is when trying to stick to a script I need more than 1 take and I sometimes struggle. With just a topic it comes easier and I make less mistakes and can do it in 1 take. My first language is also not English, so I am with you on that one as well.
Totally agree with english and recording in that language. I'm in a process of switching from "scripting everything I wanted to say" to "totally improvised flow". It's hard. Thanks for this video!
I never script. I’ve tried it and I stumble over the whole video. I like bullet points. It allows me to freedom to express naturally and I feel is more engaging…and you get a great blooper reel. 😅
You nailed it as always! :) From my experience I started scripting my entire videos, since like you English is not my mother tongue. I thought scripting the whole thing would make it safe to not forget anything I wanted to say. Unfortunately I'm sooo bad at reading the scripts the videos were so robotic and monoton. I still uploaded it and continued the journey, but it is hard to watch, if I look back :D When I started to switch to bullet point, I immediately noticed I was more "unsafe" because a lot of English words were suddenly not in my head when I was starting to talk to the camera. But I do notice I do improve step by step and the videos feel a bit more natural like a conversation. Thanks for the list of questions Peter! This is super useful and I will keep this in mind :)
I love to write out what I talk about in my Product Reviews on the Brannon No d Channel it helps to point out features and not forgetting key features. I use my iPad M4 Pro a Absolute Beast 😉
That's why i use bullet points! Scripting makes things too staged for me haha!

As fellow swede I know what your talking about. I’m just 80 videos into my RUclips thing. But I started out without scripting or use bullet points and it was really hard. And it was as you said because of we don’t really know how to express ourselves as english isn’t our first language. Now I script everything, and that has made things easier, but downside is that you will never get the perfect script, and you miss those spontaneous thoughts. So hopefully soon I will move more towards bullet points to get more freedom but still have structure around the topic. Great video Peter!
I love the video man! Super helpful. I don't script my videos but I tend to do tons of retakes until I get the clip I'm happy with. But this video has been pretty inspiring to me. Thanks!
This videos are easy to make. However, most of the time being a few subs, there is an exceptions, still. The reason is that people sense is it low or high effort and respond to that as well. Scripting is thinking with writing. The thought get clearer and hit harder. In my experience the more I script the better I get in improvisation. And the next think is to record takes, as the actors do, so you’re not to all over the place, not too monotonous, or way to hype, it’s a art form, we have to work on it in every angle possible.
There’s a huge difference between a 1-0 video , 1-1,2,3 (podcast, interview, group discussions, panels) and 1-many ( addressing an audience ) . I don’t think there is a single formula that works, but better practices for each format to make them more entertaining. Having seen people go from winging it to bullet points to scripting, I have seen different people have different opinions about it. It’s nice to hear your perspective.
I like your interactions with your Dad, Matti (Hapooja) interaction with his son, Peter McKinnon with his silly self , Philip Bloom with his cats to build a second story. I think that part should be non scripted, but otherwise ….
Adapting (in the moment) is where we grow the most. Unfortunately, our brains want to make 'systems' to ease our anxiety and to feel safe (such as reading from a script). We have to keep fighting our 'safety-seeking' brains to grow though... PS: Doing LIVESTREAMS is another good way to learn to improvise with an audience.
I have never scripted any of my videos. All I do is write a couple of bullet points. The problem is that I am Norwegian and I will speak English. I have all the right words in my head, but when they come out. Then it becomes a bit of a mess. But it gets better with practice. Everything you say resonates with myself and how I do it. Excellent points Peter👍
I never script my videos, nor do I use bullet points. I start with an idea for a video and just go and make it, I let the creative process flow. This is what I am doing in all my videos, just like life can't be bullet pointed. I loved this video Peter, I enjoy all the videos you make. Can't wait for your next video. Greetings out of a heat wave infested Nelspruit in South Africa.
As long as you don’t have to read any specs/share any knowledge it’s easy to just go on the fly. But when you want to have structure and jump straight to things, bullet points is where it’s at!
Great video. I tend to script a lot, probably way more verbose than I should. I play with bullet points here and there, but I should probably start trying that more. The point I really like, that you made in the video, is that if I get comfortable with a scrip, it will hurt my improv in the long run - which in turn hits my vlogging type videos (something I want to improve). Thanks for the video! Great topic.
For my videos the most important is having some what of an topic for the video and for the rest of the video I’m mostly improvising. I make landscape photography videos, so I have to see what I can photograph. If I’m talking about a product I use bullet points to talk about the most important thing.
Hard disagree. Ever since I started to script my videos, my channel has seen a much greater success, both because I don't beat around the bush but just go straight to the points and in doing so not waste my viewers' time and also it saves me a lot of time in editing, which makes me want to produce videos more. And yes, even a scripted video can have loads of personality. And as for improvisation, I've done a significant amount of public speaking and took a couple of in-person courses and workshops on the matter. In fact, I'd recommend these to anyone (not just RUclipsrs) because they teach things like body-language, pacing, role-playing, villain/hero dynamics, rules of threes, and finally, wrapping all of them in a compelling story. Highly highly recommended.
First of all, great video Peter! Thanks. Thought on that theme a much. Have a youtube channel and some of videos are scripted, and some not. Become to a conclusion, that if theme for me not clear enough, but I've made a research and want to share and to understand a bit more, for me easier to script an read from a prompter. But in the other hand - already comfortable in improvising, and had other problem - can talk timelessly on themes that im interested in and had to restrict myself in script. But at the end of the day all depends on the task that you are trying to achieve - if it's an information sharing and some kind of useful information let it be scripted, but if you're developing skills of public talking and achieving some kind of a oratory skills - than place yourself in uncomfortable improvisation. Anyway dude - my main takeaway is to start english channel! Want that for a several years but delayed it too much time. If you can, than I too could do that, thanks
I am just starting out and this is very relatable to me Peter. 1. English is not my native language 2. My first time talking in front of the camera is really weird, especially using English 3. I create a script to counter this weirdness 4. On another video I just decided to freestyle it a lot without any script or bullet point Will try your bullet points tips on my next video, hope I will get better at this. Thanks
I always script my video and what you said about needing a script to record a video is true in my case and I can’t get content out because I’m constantly tweaking the script with things I forgot - so frustrating. After watching your video I’m forcing myself to go unscripted. Thanks!!!
I don't usually talk on videos, but my clients do. I have one historian that is super natural and only prepares bullet points the day before after researching the topics which is amazing. But on the other hand I have another presenter that talks about vintage cars and he needs to have a full script on the teleprompter running... and I need to set his pace trough the prompter. Both that have years of experience in the field.
Never scripted a video, but sometimes I wish I had😂 No bulletpoints, just recording and then try to edit as good as I can. But feels like I'm getting more comfortable in front of the camera, and having more fun😊🔥
Love the info always super helpful. This is awesome Peter can speak swenglish (swedish / english) 😂😂 I got my spanglish down (spanish / english). Hmm what is incorporating more swenglish to help people learn a bit of swedish... interesting
I said that it depends. Some people can script their videos, and you can't tell that they script their videos. I say do what it works for your workflow. Some are good at scripting and for some, it doesn't work there is no right or wrong when it comes to this topic. For me, I bullet point or freestyle the video it depends on the topic.
Was that friend Peter Mckinnon? ;) - I just saw he is talking about some of the same thing. Also, i just got your Tri-charge for my sony batteries!! Love it!
LOL, I have this debate in my head quite frequently. It's really hard to script a motovlog, so I'll just go out with a base idea and record. For talking heads? Bullet points is where it's at, IMO. I tried scripting, and it came out... flat. Bullet points? Much better for me, and helps me stay on topic.
I’ve tried scripting exact sentences, and then constantly get tripped up that it sounded way better on paper/screen than actually speaking it out. I makes me re-take the line 20 times until I just get frustrated. Bullet points give me the point and then I can organically speak my mind about it.
I’m also trying to navigate my way around what is the best way for me to make my videos. To script or not to script. I completely agree with you when it comes to making bullet points to allow you to improvise and sound more natural on camera. HOWEVER 😂 I truly struggle to write bullet points that don’t end up having too much information in them and as a result become a script 😂 I feel like as I am writing my bullet points, I have too many ‘key’ ideas/phrases/words that I want to make sure I remember when it comes to filming. Do you have this issue? If not how do you overcome this problem 😂
Just had an idea for a scripting RUclips channel. "Skrip Club". (It's a slang term used in the southeastern united states for a business of questionable character.)
@ English is also not my main language and I tend to think more what I speak to not messed it up and in my main language I am more dinamic. Maybe I don’t know all the words how to express something and that makes me sometimes limited on how to express something. It could also happen to you. Making a video comparing between your native language or one with English. Well it is just an idea, don’t have to do it.
i know that in your head you are a huge infulancer or some other thing. BUT pls! skip those videos that you talk about yourself or giving advices or another bulshit and be focused on proftional reviews. you make me tiered man
It’s simple, just press the unsubscribe button. I don’t think I’m a huge influencer in any way, but you seem to think that your opinion and taste matters way more than mine. Just don’t watch if you don’t like. Simple as that. No one forces you to.
Your dad is such a main character 😂. Love it!
Is the best character 😂
On point. When it's not your native language, it can sometimes be hard to express yourself. I agree with you that with practice, you'll become more confident, and your learning curve will improve.
Love what you do man, really inspiring especially given that English is not my first language either and I am really struggling to save my "personality" when I speak it.

Love the info always super helpful. This is awesome Peter can speak swenglish (swedish / english) 😂😂 I got my spanglish down (spanish / english). Hmm what is incorporating more swenglish to help people learn a bit of swedish... interesting
I feel this. Every time I make a script I sound so robotic and my face is like 😐
Looks cleaner and more organized in the studio than when I was there. How many nerf balls did you end up finding after the clean?
I got a nice teleprompter going to be doing a mix of script and bullets. Great video!
Du och den där Canadensarn har prata! :) Ha de gött Önskar RadioRanrike i Grebbestad.
I'm back to bullet points as well. After plenty of scripting and using teleprompter I can tell that like my non scripted videos much better.
I said that it depends. Some people can script their videos, and you can't tell that they script their videos. I say do what it works for your workflow. Some are good at scripting and for some, it doesn't work there is no right or wrong when it comes to this topic. For me, I bullet point or freestyle the video it depends on the topic.
Hey! Unfortunately I do script a lot! But you intrigued me to make a vlog without scripting anything! Let’s see! Thank you for sharing mate!
Was that friend Peter Mckinnon? ;) - I just saw he is talking about some of the same thing.
Also, i just got your Tri-charge for my sony batteries!! Love it!
Haha it wasn’t! I guess great minds think alike lol
Your English is fantastic, for a european no accent at all meet you in some western country would not even think you are Swedish
Great video Peter.
Thank you!
Peter, great editing, what are you shooting with?
Thanks! Sony ZV-E1
It’s gonna be different for everyone, I personally like the bullet points a lot! But scripting might be great for some!
Thanks for sharing makes sense 😊
I’ve tried scripting exact sentences, and then constantly get tripped up that it sounded way better on paper/screen than actually speaking it out. I makes me re-take the line 20 times until I just get frustrated. Bullet points give me the point and then I can organically speak my mind about it.
As I was going to type my comment you said the thing i was going to add lol. Great thoughts going script free helps your public speaking ability.
Yeah it has helped me soooo much both privately and publicly, but also business wise!
I just recently went from bullet points to scripting and I don’t know why. I guess I accidentally started making my bullet points into sentences
I am usually combining fully scripted parts and bullet points.
I’m also trying to navigate my way around what is the best way for me to make my videos. To script or not to script.
I completely agree with you when it comes to making bullet points to allow you to improvise and sound more natural on camera. HOWEVER 😂 I truly struggle to write bullet points that don’t end up having too much information in them and as a result become a script 😂
I feel like as I am writing my bullet points, I have too many ‘key’ ideas/phrases/words that I want to make sure I remember when it comes to filming.
Do you have this issue? If not how do you overcome this problem 😂
This is exactly how I accidentally went from bullet points to scripting hahaha.
@ 🤣 Glad I’m not the only one!
Just had an idea for a scripting RUclips channel. "Skrip Club". (It's a slang term used in the southeastern united states for a business of questionable character.)
Go for it!
Lmaooo
Making a non-scripted video about not scripting videos. Inception 😄
Yeah, for me, bullet points would definitely keep me on task
Excelent video! BTW, your English is freakin’ awesome. I wish can I could speak like you (y)
Awesome !!!!
why are subtitles not switched on ?
I tried scripting videos and unless it’s a voice over it just does not work for me. Off the cuff or with bullet points for sure.
What camera are you vlogging with ?
Sony ZVE1
@@PeterLindgren1god dame that’s expensive
that's my cheapest camera
Peter … DJI mic mini review bro .. come on we’re waiting for it 😂
Haha I don’t have it 😅
This is helpful for me because I am doing Vlogmas ❤ and I was wondering 🤔 I’m not sure what to say in this moment 😢🎉 😅
Bulletpoints 🎉
BRA JOBBAT
Do you think scripting in the beginning helped you be better at bullet points and improvising?
Hey man 👋
Hey!
It will change the difference if you made one video on your natural language or it will not obviously with subtitles
What do you mean?
@ English is also not my main language and I tend to think more what I speak to not messed it up and in my main language I am more dinamic. Maybe I don’t know all the words how to express something and that makes me sometimes limited on how to express something. It could also happen to you. Making a video comparing between your native language or one with English. Well it is just an idea, don’t have to do it.
Yeah I’d say it comes down to practice! I feel basically as dynamic in English as I do in Swedish!
Though, your video seems like it was planned in advance. Not scripted but outlined as the transition between shots 8s well studied
🤘❤️
I never script and just run with it since i started 😂 so let's see how long i last 😆
This comment was unscripted
Now it’s not
Video content dam good with quality but view is not like before...? Support guys this channel 🙏

You just did
i know that in your head you are a huge infulancer or some other thing. BUT pls! skip those videos that you talk about yourself or giving advices or another bulshit and be focused on proftional reviews. you make me tiered man
It’s simple, just press the unsubscribe button.
I don’t think I’m a huge influencer in any way, but you seem to think that your opinion and taste matters way more than mine.
Just don’t watch if you don’t like. Simple as that. No one forces you to.
