Pianist, improviser, composer, and multi-platform artist Jeremy Siskind discusses how to improvise on ballad without going into double time, using Duke Ellington's tune, "I Got it Bad" as an example. He shows improvising with eighth note, eighth-note triplet, and sixteenth note subdivisions, as well as playing "gesturally."

Yay 👋 (gesture) Another really interesting video... Your improvising reminded me of Keith Jarretts way of improvising on ballades....

Thank you - that's an honor! Keith's about as good as playing ballads as anyone I've ever heard.

Wow! You bring clarity to an otherwise vague thing, whereas I would just think of rubato and make long notes longer, and kind of "guess" when to play the next phrase. I suppose the old rule of always count still applies, eh?

So I find the concept of improvising rhythm harder than improvising melody because improvising melody still retains the harmonic structure, but what does rhythm have as an underlying structure? In my attempts at improvising the original rhythmic patterns seem to ‘bleed’ through unless playing all quarter notes, eighth notes, triplets or a combination, but is that really improvising the rhythm? Can you recommend any instructive examples of improvising rhythm where the performer really gets away from the original pattern without playing mainly even eighth, triplets etc. I can think of rhythm changes heads that don’t resemble the original pattern but these are composed rather than improvised. Favorite gesture? Would have to either be a wink or a smile

Quite malapropos, but I just wanted to mention that I really love what Dee Dee Bridgewater did to the Jacques Brel ballad Ne Me Quitte Pas, playing parts of it in 7. It really works quite well. First time I heard a jazz ballad in seven.

Yeah, that sounds very interesting! 7 is usually so rhythmic and ballads are usually so fluid. I'll take a listen!

Wonderful lesson, and playing! The gestural could merit its own video. As for saying something about gestures, I'll quote Rodney Dangerfield: "I'm so lonely. How lonely? While driving a guy gave me the finger. And I enjoyed it."

The "gestural" is the one i can feel the most.
    Awesome flow to it.

Definitely! It's very expressive. When you combine the expressive of playing gesturally with the clarity/solidity of the other styles is where you achieve something wtih nice balance.
