  • This video discusses the often-overlooked aspect of phrasing in playing chords and melodies. We emphasize the importance of not just playing the right notes but also focusing on the sound and authenticity of the music. I'll provide examples and tips on how to improve phrasing and create more natural and lyrical sounds in your playing.

Piano comping like the horn section of Duke Ellington Band - love it!

Thanks so much. Having been a magpie, picking up bits and pieces, across different channels, this has become my main channel for Jazz Piano.

This is so useful and I play guitar!

Love all these videos/lessons! I'm transposing Barry Harris' system with DADGAD on the guitar, well, trying too. It works quite well! Your channel is the best.

This really makes sense! I am going to work on this while I’m early in the developing fluency section. Thanks for the great advice!

    Very useful!

Great advice, that works with singing too. Singing the complete notes and phrasing in a way that make sense to the ear, heart and mind. Love it.

I've been working on this for a few weeks - it really makes my playing sound more natural. Anything that makes you really THINK beyond the notes helps. Thanks!!

Thanks Shan I was just thinking about working on fluidity.

As you said, "I haven't even improvised yet," I thought, "hang on, you didn't play the chords in the first measure". That too is an artistic choice to vary from what's written. It mightn't so much as occur to a rank beginner to think they were "allowed" to make change like that, let alone have the experience and sensitivity to appreciate how good that specific choice would be. Rests are as important as notes, and all that.
