  • This RUclips video presentation explains how to test statistically whether two variables are independent (not associated) using the chi square test. It outlines what is meant by hypothesis testing and how hypotheses can be worded when using chi-square tests. Next it considers the assumptions and components of a chi square test, namely the chi square statistic, the degrees of freedom and the probability of the test statistic or one more extreme occurring by chance (p value). The application of the chi-square test is illustrated using an example drawn from whether there is a difference in last meal purchased for different nationality customers. First the data matrix is explained including how the chi square test uses categorical data from two variables for each case. The test statistic and its interpretation is then explained, including how to report this in a project report or dissertation or thesis. Further reading is outlined.
