Profiling and the Use of Smart Technologies by the Police in South Africa

Profiling is a controversial topic, particularly as more advanced technologies are used to facilitate it. Law enforcement agencies and the private sector are turning to surveillance and social media monitoring technologies to proactively combat organised crime, like corruption. It is critical though, that if permitted, this respects individual rights such as the right to privacy. Lucien discusses this topic in light of recent crime fighting initiatives by the South African Police Service, Provincial Governments and Municipalities.
