2:02 the whistle was probably once used on a Crusader steam locomotive. Or some other Reading steam locomotive. They used Reading 6 Chimes, but all of the Crusaders were scrapped in the 1950s.
Came off of 2100 after the Rambles. Huber Leath the man that saved Reading Business car aka the old Paradise car owned both till he passed away and left them to the Strasburg. Huber was a great guy I'll always miss him and many others from the SRC.
Thanks, very nice. Have you ever heard 8 inch, 10 inch and 12 inch diameter whistles as were used on large ships ? A deep, powerful, majestic chord. Check out my 12 inch diameter chime whistles and 2019 St.Clair, Mi. whistle toot. Harry Barry.
What makes PM 1225's Nathan 6 Chime sound so unique? Is it because its made of a different metal than other Nathan 6 chimes? Has it always had the same whistle?
That mostly has to do with the shield it sits in, which deflects steam out of the view of the cab crew, but in the process causes some chimes to sound more loudly than others. Depending on how the bell, or top part of the whistle, is rotated in the shield, different chimes become pronounced and different "tunings" can result. This is also true for the whistles on the Nickel Plate Berkshires.
@@PennsyPro Ok, thanks for letting me know. I wasnt 100% sure, I was just going off of what I'd heard that the Ms had. Didnt know that they'd put a 12 on her.
There are a few factors to a whistle’s sound. For example, the regular whistle used on the 765 was made from brass, but the guest whistle placed on her last year was made from cast steel due to wartime restrictions. Wear and tear through the years can also play a huge role in the sound. When they were new, they probably sounded much more similar.
Pennsy Productions probably - but I’ve personally heard much less variation in other (older) whistles produced. SP 6 chimes sound almost uniformly the same. Reading 6 chimes have some variation, but all have a similar sound. Crosby and Hancock 3 chimes also sound quite consistent. Same with Pennsy 3 chimes. The list goes on. Nathan six chimes, some far more modern than some of the aforementioned whistles, sound wildly different from one another. Perhaps it was Nathan’s quality control? (Late steam era lack of care or wartime restrictions?)
@@fuscoproductions i've noticed nathan six chimes sound about the same barring 1225 and 765. FWRHS and SRI disagree on the proper tuning of the whistle hence why they sound so different
Ahhh I love steam whistles! Seeing all these beauties running makes me want to see Mohawk 3001 running again

@@PennsyPro Oh interesting, thank you!
760s whistle reminds me of 261s 6 chime for some reason
2:04 Sounds like NKP 765
The whistle on 90 is from 2100
Doesnt the 475 have a 7" or 7.5" Hooter, and not a 12"? I was thinking the 12"s were on the big engines, like the As and the Ys
Currently, 475 does have a 12 inch hooter, but before the 611 event she had an 8 inch hooter, which had a higher pitch and a smaller tone.

What’s the whistle that plays in the intro?
That's Nickel Plate no. 765.
576's whistle is actually a shop built 3 chime, not a Hancock.
Thanks for your correction. We just updated the description.
Is it just me, or is a Nathan 6 chime one of the most inconsistent sounding whistles ever produced? I swear I’ve never heard two that sound the same.

That’s a very good point. It would be interesting see why the Nathan 6 Chime specifically is affected so much in comparison to other whistles.

1225 has a cracked Lima 5 chime
I think she had a Lima 5 Chime prior to 2008, but since then it’s changed to the standard Nathan 6 Chime.
@@PennsyPro 5 chime is being rebuilt becaused a part has been cracked open and needs repair
It has always had the same, PM Nathan 6 chime.
Pere Marquette 1225 wears a 5 chime not a 6 chime
Prior to 2008, the locomotive did wear a Lima 5 Chime. According to a crew member however, she does currently wear a Nathan 6 Chime.
Pennsy Productions but it sounds so much like a 5 chime
That could be because of the deflector that it sits in, which could potentially cause some chimes to sound louder than others.
1225 has always worn a Nathan 6 chime.
@@sd80mac That sounds NOTHING like a 6 chime
