Afterword by Amelia Williams: Hello, old friend. And here we are. You and me, on the last page. By the time you read these words, Rory and I will be long gone. So know that we lived well and were very happy. And above all else, know that we will love you always. Sometimes I do worry about you though. I think once we're gone you won't be coming back here for awhile. And you might be alone. Which you should never be. Don't be alone, Doctor. And do one more thing for me. There's a little girl waiting in a garden. She's going to wait a long while, so she's going to need a lot of hope. Go to her. Tell her a story. Tell her that if she's patient, the days are coming that she'll never forget. Tell her she'll go to see and fight pirates. She'll fall in love with a man who'll wait two thousand years to keep her safe. Tell her she'll give hope to the greatest painter who ever lived. And save a whale in outer space. Tell her, this is the story of Amelia Pond. And this is how it ends.
It makes me cry, as soon as it picks up at 2:17, because i always, always imagine the scene, and just... the singing is cathartic, it makes you *feel*, makes you envision, it tugs on you and just... *Sobs*
I love this sentence. I felt that when river said "it's called marriage" she was referring to 'making certain compromises for your significant other' but in case of amy and rory it was more of a 'going through impossible things for each other' Edit : oh and I'm sorry for digging up a 6 Y.O. post but i just wanted to appreciate the clever writing here.
I had to swim the Atlantic and punch a shark in the nose, then walk the African plains and wrestle a lion, climb mount Everest and bare knuckle box the abominable snowman in order to gain back my manhood after hearing this song again. thanks a lot.
The most beautiful love story to ever feature on Doctor Who. :'( The Boy who waited and the Girl who waited, together forever in the hearts and minds of Whovians across the globe.
I'd say that Amy and Rory's goodbye was one of the saddest. Not only did they have to go, but they had to live out the entire rest of their lives knowing that the doctor could never see them again. I literally wanted to punch steven moffat afterwards.
And what makes it worse are the plot holes. Knowing that Doctor and Ponds could have easily met outside Manhattan with some simple contact through someone. But we have to accept that they can't. Why ? Because plot says so.
+Mystical But remember earlier on in the episode, where River told Amy to never show the Doctor the damage? That scene seemed random at first, but now it fits in. What if Amy was never transported to the same time as Rory? What if they lived out their lives in heartbreak, without each other?
I think Donna's was sadder. Amy and Rory lived out a happy life together afterwards and they had their memories of travelling with the Doctor and each other. Donna saved the universe , helped create another Doctor for Rose to be with so the Doctor felt he could give her a happy life, felt good in herself and grew as a person, only for all the memories of the Doctor and her time with him and what she did to go away, leaving her to feel like a nobody again.
The voice comes in, and I can't NOT tear up. Murray Gold needs to win approximately all of the awards ever; I think he's responsible for more tears from me than RTD and Moffat put together. Scoring, and in particular coming up with themes that can enhance a video scene and be associated with characters and moods without being cheesy, is way tougher than most people realize, and he's a master. Like Howard Shore-level master.
Maybe we'll get a spin off series with Rory and Amy fighting aliens in, like, the 1890's, together, like it should be. I really just need to see Rory and Amy.
P.S pretty much confirmed they DIDN'T fight aliens in the 1940's, they lived a normal life, adopted a child, and got jobs, and settled. In all honesty, this is the best ending for them, it allowed them to settle down, and stop travelling.
+lilbluedemon plays I agree. It's the life they deserved together. The doctor strengthened their relationship together, but they really needed to live away from the doctor in order to be happy with just each other.
It makes me wonder if they could have teamed up with Vastra, Jenny and Strax to fight aliens. It would create a ton of plot holes for later seasons when the other docs visit though :(
How much has the doctor cried? enough to water a rose? Maybe enough to win a nobel prise? enough to fill a pond? maybe two? Even enough to fill a river?
AMY: What are you doing? Rory, what are you doing? (Amy turns around and goes to him.) AMY: Rory, stop it. You'll die. RORY: Yeah, twice, in the same building on the same night. Who else could do that? AMY: Just come down, please. RORY: This is the right thing to do. This will work. If I die now, it's a paradox, right? The paradox kills the Angels. Tell me I'm wrong. Go on, please, because I'm really scared. Oh, great. The one time you can't manage it. Amy, I'm going to need a little help here. (Rory takes Amy's hand and puts it on his chest.) AMY: Just stop it! RORY: Just think it through. This will work, this will kill the Angels. AMY: It'll kill you too. RORY: Will it? River said that this place would be erased from time, never existed. If this place never existed, what did I fall off? AMY: You think you'll come back to life? RORY: When don't I?! AMY: Rory... RORY: And anyway, what else is there? Dying of old age downstairs, never seeing you again? Amy, please. If you love me, then trust me, and push. AMY: I can't. RORY: You have to! AMY: Could you? If it was me, could you do it? RORY: To save you, I'd do anything. (Amy gets up on the ledge next to Rory.) AMY: Prove it. RORY: No, I can't take you too. AMY: You said we'd come back to life. Money where your mouth is time. RORY: Amy, look. AMY: Shut up. Together, or not at all. (The Doctor and River arrive via the fire escape.) DOCTOR: What the hell are you doing?!?!?! AMY: Changing the future. It's called marriage. (Gazing into each others eyes, Amy and Rory fall off Winter Quay.) DOCTOR: Amy! Amy! (Balls of energy gather and flicker around the roof.) RIVER: Doctor! What's happening? DOCTOR: The paradox. It's working! The paradox is working! (The scene then changes to white)
Not sure if anyone else thinks this but from 2:20 I could really imagine this being used for ncuti gatwas regeneration scene I think it really captures him it's very emotional but also sounds quite triumphant I could even imagine the whole scene it would be emotional but very uplifting too
Amy and Rory were just sent to a different time and died in their 80s. Rose was trapped in another dimension, but she had everyone she cared about, including her "dead" father. I think Donna was the most tragic.
Doctor Who Fan Indeed, the Donna that The Doctor loved died in a way, Wilf and The Doctor lost the best side of Donna. Rose was Lost but had her family and in the end, the love of her life. Amy lived and died with her Husband, but never saw her best friend again
A stunning piece of music, I can still feel the tingles as Rory and Amy jumped from the building. Her hair waving softly in the wind, the look of love in their eyes. Two souls completely intertwined, ready to die to save others. Bravo!
Karen Gillan had signed a deal to do Marvel Studios movies here in the US and had to leave. That also required Arthur Darvill to leave as well, and he also is doing DC comics TV over here. They needed an appropriate departure, and "The Angels Take Manhattan" filled the bill. An epilogue, not filmed but done as an extra, explains to their dad what had happened and is carried by their adopted son, now fully grown. It led to the Tardis in the clouds and the arrival of one Clara Oswin.
Imagine this could’ve been fixed with “hey doctor, come meet me in Texas in 1990 or something” *gets zapped by angel and waits 5 years to see the doctor again without disrupting the New York paradox*
Doctor Who is so lucky to have such a brilliant composer like Murray Gold. The music of Doctor Who is such an important part of the show, and if we didn't have him, it just wouldn't be the same. His themes are so memorable that I actually have heartache listening to them!
After so many years, this still managed to give me hardcore chills. I love Doctor Who so much. This show brought out so many things. This taught me to live the best life you can live because it could end tomorrow, or while I'm sleeping. But most of all, to spend it with the one you hold close. Your significant other. Just you and them. Together. For the rest of time. _Together_ . . . .
It is indeed the best show ever. Seeing Rory get taken, and then Amy saying "goodbye" just broke me. I think it was the saddest companion departure ever
"I am not running away from things, I am running TO them...before they flare, and fade forever. It's all right! Our lives won't remain the same--they can't...one day, soon maybe, you'll--stop. I've known for a while." "Then why do you keep coming back for us?" "Because you were the first--the first face this face saw. You're sealed onto my hearts, Amelia Pond, yours will be. I'm running to you, and Rory, before you...fade....from me."
Can you imagine if this is how it actually ended. If two of our favorite companions, lovers forever, just jump with each other toward their death, unsure if it will save them or not. And then that's it. Amy and Rory die, in faith of each other, and their love... Oh my God it would have been a legendary Who moment.
I've been rewatching doctor who (currently on power of three) And everytime this song would start playing I would nearly cry because I know what's going to happen to Amy and Rory in the angels take Manhattan
oh jesus.. I'm fine until 2:18 and then I just fall apart. This music is so deep and so moving. and it hurts t just listen because within the notes are the memories of the characters, the stories and the fictional things that we love and somehow are meant to let go of. I just adore this piece of music.
Upon listening to a version of this that came out nearly a year ago, I hadn't ever heard the last thirty seconds or so. I literally just teared up because it was so unexpected after the huge climax of the piece.
I would love for them to use this for The Twelfth Doctor's regeneration. "Together or not at all" could work thematically, with the First and Twelfth Doctors helping each other come to terms with regenerating. Also, The Doctor could remember Clara somehow and then they're "together" again, figuratively. I just think this would fit very well for his departure.
Exactly. It would just be another show with typical sci-fi music. The fact that there is an orchestra and composer behind the show is absolutely fantastic. With Murray's themes you live the moments as they happen in the show.
THIS is the reason the angels weep...
If it wasn't for the angels, they wouldn't be weeping in the first place
PARADOX!
Genius
The angel, crying: My food! Why oh why does the food always run away?! The horror!

Rory doesn't have his own theme. He shares one with Amy. Even the music shows how loyal, loving and devoted this amazing character is.
Rory deserved a theme. He was one of the bravest and most loyal companions in Doctor Who yet he was always sidelined.
He does have one (The lone centurion theme)

I just think this would fit very well for his departure.
Samuel Irvin That would be interesting, but Capaldi should get his own theme when he regenerates.
Joe Devaney Maybe. Smith didn't get his own theme, so it doesn't matter a whole lot to me.
The ending is so beautiful. I just play the end part.
Yes, truly the Doctor and Amy's most powerful moment together on screen.
I miss this
Exactly. It would just be another show with typical sci-fi music. The fact that there is an orchestra and composer behind the show is absolutely fantastic. With Murray's themes you live the moments as they happen in the show.
Always makes me cry just hearing this song
Ok so I love the whole song but I think the intro is my fav bit like it's so simple but cool and dark too
Together....or not at all.
Halia Meguid's voice is so beautiful, I'm glad they kept it in the song.
Just listening to this practically brings tears to my eyes.
I cry with this song because I can see the scene playing out as the song progresses.
Can we all agree that season 7 has had one of the best soundtracks yet.... it's BRILLIANT! Brilliantly sad, but still....
