- May 31, 2023 my sweet Oscar cat died. A kind vet helped him gently go from the comfort of his favorite chair, at home, while I stroked the fur on his precious head. Oscar was the kindest, most forgiving, and steadfast friend I've ever had. I wrote this poem for him in his final days, sensing that his time was short.

The light arrives on time
Each day to mark the morn
We walk along a line
From the day we are born
Along the winding road
Until the journey's done
Stand before the ocean
To see the setting sun
Your boat is in the bay
And now an evening breeze
To call your soul away
Across the endless seas
And when you do set sail
Towards that distant shore
Your sun then out of sight
I'll love you ever more

Oh Paul, Oscar was a beautiful and wonderful cat. I’m so happy he brought you so much joy. Always remember that joy-bringing was surely a mutual experience. What a great life he must have had with a cat dad like you. Hugs to you man.

He had a great life and will be remembered by all. You did him a great service by keeping his last moments at home.The passing of our 4 legged friends (especially orange fur balls) makes us value life so much more and appreciate those who are still with us. Know that you 2 shared an amazing journey through life and that is all that one can ask for. May he be reincarnated into another free spirit and roam the earth once more.

This actually made me think of something slightly more light hearted. There’s a George Gershwin song called “They can’t take that away from me” and yes, the lyrics are about a romantic liason but there is still the message that all the wonderful things about someone, even when they’re gone, they can still bring you joy and no one can take them away from you 😊

I'm literally sitting here crying and remembering my sweet kitties that I lost in January and February. When they leave us they take a little piece of our heart with them.
exactly. I still have dreams where my cat is still around and then I think "well, isn't se really old now? when will she die?" then it dawns on me that yeah, 2002 was a long time ago, she left more than 20 years ago but she still comes back from time to time in my dreams.

One gone and another adopted.
Help i just got an 8th cat.
People keep dumping their cats in the woods then the cats seek shelter in my barn and now i have an army.
8th member just joined. Stray grey kitten got caught in the live trap. Seems to small to have travelled from someone's house (like half a mile to the nearest house) so guessing another drop off
I have gone past girl with all the cats i am now the leader of a small feline army
I have to clean three litterboxes daily

Oh Paul I am so sorry to hear about the loss of Oscar. My heart breaks for you. Just remember you did the right thing for Oscar by letting him go gently and not suffer. We love our little fur baby so much and it's the hardest thing we have to do. It's not fair and it's so hard for us humans to have to make that decision and let them go. Your poem for Oscar was so beautiful and I want you to know that I truly believe with every fiber of my being one day you'll see all your fur babies again.
