Very cool. I remember back in the late 1970's it must have been my dad and I spent a day with Bill in his shop. He showed us how he forged a blade. I still have two old Bagwell Bowies, one marked No. 1 that was featured in a magazine and another with mastadon ivory handles.
Bill Bagwell made a knife for me back in 1988. Great piece of work, top of the line, bar none. Also have a few Randall knives, had more Randall's sold them, and gave 2 away just because.
It got done. My husband contacted Mr. Bagwell and recently got his beloved Bowie back. Mr. Bagwell gave it a razor primary, very sharp backcut and Fighting Bowie tip profile. Now, he won't let anyone even touch it.
Truly a master. You inspire a novice like me. True to form you carry the blade just as a gentleman would carry his blade. The apitomy of the true AMERICAN BLADE! THANK YOU SIR

Absolutely Patrice... :) I love mine... :) And, mine is the Factory Version, I couldn't afford one of his handmade one's... But, if I ever find a great deal on one, I will scoop it up... :) Absolutely...
It's a lovely knife, but his sharpening technique of using the burr as a cutting edge makes that edge a little delicate. I find that stepping down progressive grit sizes of wet&dry from p400 to p2000, then stropping with polishing compound gives a very fine shaving edge, but since this method removes any burr the edge has more (unstressed) metal behind it and it tends to last better than the create-a-burr-then-straighten-it method even though it is just as fine. Just my 2 cents.
brottarnacke Stropping with polishing compound removes the tiny scratches left by the stone, file or paper. This gives you a fine, smooth edge rather than one with microscopic "teeth", and it removes any burrs too small to feel.

Arctodus Simus Sweet dude. I know there's the stealth that looks similar but I like the midnight a little better. My hell's belle freaking rock's but there aren't any real test cutting video's featuring it and i'd have to have a spare one to feel comfortable doing it myself.
Are his Bowie knives one of the best? Do they compare to Randall knives? Or Down Under Blades? Who are the "top makers" of Bowies today? Interesting opinion on how a strong knife should be built. With a gradual taper. Most Bowies n't have that that. Some mind prefer the look of the more commonly seen designs. I'd like to see a Bagwell compared to a Randall. Or Down Under...head to head. Or blade to blade rather. Just for curiosity reasons.

My husband's Bowie is not a Bagwell but it recently came back from Bill Bagwell who graciously agreed to help my husband out a bit. Outrageous primary, Fighting Bowie point geometry and vicious back cut.
No the gentleman is pronouncing it correctly, it is pronounced B(oo)wie. David Robert Jones took the stage name David Bowie from the well know knife, but he did not know that correct pronunciation of James Bowie's name. However to be fair, considering the spelling of the name I think that the way James Bowie pronounced his family name is irregular.
It's a beautiful knife. But. If you take a blade that long with you anywhere public and a cop finds out, you will go to jail, lose your knife, and your money faster than if you have a conceal carry firearm. Our laws favor guns, but punish most other self defense weapons. And that gangster he refers to in his scenario most likely will have a gun on his person. Knives are beautiful, wonderful historical items to have a collect. But if you try to take a knife to a gun fight you will end up dead or in prison.

I had one bowtie 7 inches 25 yrs old ,still keep it ,great knife !

What does the stropping do, if there isn't any burr at all? I thought the reason for stropping was to straighten the burr.

Depends on the state. Some states it's legal to carry and in some a CCW license covers guns and knives.

I thought bladesmiths prefer specialized low-speed grinding wheels. Easier on the material and less likely to mess you up.
