She played a straight supporting dramatic part, and didn't sing a note. Meryl Streep was the star, and SHE sang. A lot. And while Meryl can sing, that's not exactly her strong point. She had to stand right beside one of the greatest voices in American musical theater, and sing. Even though part of her character might have been that she had an OK but not great voice, that must have been strange.
Whatever you can say about this production, one thing you cannot deny: Audra McDonald has got the voice for it.

Every diva takes a crack at Mama Rose because she is such a juicy, brassy, fun, interesting character to play.
YUP she’s probably the best roles for a women in the musical theater canon!
