one thing I particularly love about your videos is that you don't assume knowledge on our part or familiarity with your previous works; a lot of creators in various fields make videos that are nigh incomprehensible to a new viewer, but each of your works stands on its own, and your conversational tone means even familiar steps found in other videos feel fresh and interesting each time

The flowers are gorgeous, but what stunned me the most in the before/after reveal is THE FREAKING VASE. It went from a vague dark shape with a few tiny highlights to a polished gold vessel that hits just the right balance of luxurious and understated--it doesn't overshadow the flowers in the slightest, but it complements their showiness beautifully. :D

    Hello,
Would you consider doing a video like "A week in my studio"?
The reason I'm asking that is because we see you doing one painting at the time during your videos. From A to Z But, in reality, for example after the hot table treatment I don't think that you just sit and wait for the acclimation is done to keep working.
You probably go to another project, refurnish your supplies, clean everything, do the paperwork needed, respond to potential clients....
So one video in the type of "Spend a week with me" could allow us to have a better grasp on your day to day professional life.
I mean I guess you have to do some mental gymnastic between working a painting A, then on a painting B ... I would love to hear you talk about this aspect of your work. And I also think that there so much more work that is not directly in contact with a painting that you do but mandatory that I would love to just have a taste of.
For exemple also I would love to hear about how you do an estimate on renovating a painting. But i won't ask for that since in my eyes this is very "personnal" and we as the public don't need to know how much exactly it cost for a painting to go through your hands and expertise

having done similar with screws (just a plastic container though), it still takes a lot of tracking down to collect the damnable things. Then a week later you find more, hopefully not by stepping, or sitting on them. The brass
tacks were fortunately done on the workbench and just swept into a drawer.

Can you elaborate on how you add the synthetic varnish to your re-touching paints the next time a project calls for it? Do you mix it into whatever color you have on the board, or pull the color onto the brush and then dab into the resin? I recall you talking about how the resin can affect the sheen, so I imagine you would not want some of your colors on your board to have it, if you are working on another canvas with the expectation that the colors will dry matte. As always, thanks for the interesting and oh, so relaxing, videos!

I wish he would discuss how much these restorations COST. I took a 14x16 inch impressionist painting from the 1920s to a local "conservator." It was, at worst, a bit dirty. Indeed, after TELLING me that was basically in "great" condition, he then indicated it would cost over TWENTY ONE HUNDRED dollars to "conserve"! The painting was worth maybe 10 grand wholesale and I couldn't see spending that much on it, so I passed. But I don't understand the price. I mean, how many hours could it have taken to clean the thing?

The glass jars are aesthetically pleasing, but what you need is Glad sandwich storage containers. They're unbreakable, see-through, and stackable. Everybody has an opinion. 🌹🌷🥀🌹🌷

By the way, I'm a huge fan of the channel, never miss one video. I love how the channel shows the paintings and sculptures in their sheer materiality, apart from the representation or the ideas, it's like showing the guts of a work of art.

Your productions are fantastic, seem them all. Great visuals, awesome content, efficient video editing... there's just one thing though: audio. Audio editing is your Kryptonite.

"I can vacuum up all that debris...the dust, the dirt, and often pine needles." lol wut 😂
I can see that maybe being an occasional thing with paintings found out in old storage sheds or something. But "often"?!?! WTF are people doing? Leaving them outside as bribes for the fairies? Hanging their paintings up in pine forests for late summer picnics? I need to know.

I keep being amazed by the retouching.. You're using all the wrong colors.. making the defect more obvious than it originally was. Then add even more paint and suddenly . .huh what happened, where did that spot go .. Each and every time.

Me watching the retouching: Oops! Wrong color!..Oh, wait, OK, no it's not, in fact that was exactly the right color. That was crazy. How did he do that?

Well, "peonys" covered with surface grime obviously can't give its owner wealth and prosperity. Good job!

Just wondering: have you ever ruined or majorly damaged a painting by accident or bad luck? Is this something every art restorer will have happen, maybe at the beginning of their career, or is this very unlikely with a normal amount of care? I'm thinking some of these paintings might just fall apart or be hiding some unknown chemicals that react badly to restoration. Is this why you have insurance?

Thanks for sharing that tack jar bomb. Good stuff. Been a while since we’ve seen that wakka flocka zoshi Japanese paper stuff. Need some of that.

This is a very pretty painting. Reminding us that decorative work can be high quality.
And the tacks. My Dad had a workshop. He rigged high power magnets to the shop vacuum. Any nails were trapped. Just a thought.

Julian, I've always wanted to ask you this question. When first going to the hot table to flatten the painting, has a crease from canvas stretcher ever doubled under instead of going flat when you turn the vaccum on? I'll assume if it did you'd just release the vaccum and try again, but has an old canvas ever just cracked on you? 🤔🤔

Let's get me- er, this painting - fixed!

I have a very similar print of a painting that looks like this. I wish I could find someone who specialised in these kinds of paintings, as i am awful at painting realism. Such a classic type of painting, will always be one of my fav.

I've made that sound when dropping a box of safety or straight pins. Let me just say - a magnet on a string or pole is your friend! (If needed you can vacuum through a screen to remove dust/threads etc.) For you it would leave the glass shards behind.
