one thing I particularly love about your videos is that you don't assume knowledge on our part or familiarity with your previous works; a lot of creators in various fields make videos that are nigh incomprehensible to a new viewer, but each of your works stands on its own, and your conversational tone means even familiar steps found in other videos feel fresh and interesting each time
I agree. I found this video most informative and enjoyable. Yes straight forward and with no philosophical comments! The music is pleasant to hear. Thank you
having done similar with screws (just a plastic container though), it still takes a lot of tracking down to collect the damnable things. Then a week later you find more, hopefully not by stepping, or sitting on them. The brass tacks were fortunately done on the workbench and just swept into a drawer.
I wonder if he stores the tacks in glass for a specific reason? The look of the jars is a nice mood, but glass shards and delicate art don't mix well. There is a lot to be said for storing things in tins with lids that latch well. :)
The flowers are gorgeous, but what stunned me the most in the before/after reveal is THE FREAKING VASE. It went from a vague dark shape with a few tiny highlights to a polished gold vessel that hits just the right balance of luxurious and understated--it doesn't overshadow the flowers in the slightest, but it complements their showiness beautifully. :D
Not that it really matters - But my cat was absolutely fascinated watching you retouch the painting. His head moved back and forth with your paint brush with rapt attention. 😂
13:42 had me wheezing the way he said "AAAAAWESOOOME" after dropping the jar with the tacks 😂 relatable af I do the same when I drop something I'm really not supposed to drop 😂
This channel has kept me going through hard times for years now. When my world feels like it’s falling apart I get to watch a kind, true hearted person put something back together lovingly. Always helps me get through my hard days, like today. Thank you Julian ❤
It gives me some solace to see someone I respect greatly also fall prey to the temptation to avoid the trip back to the cupboard to get the rest of the items required, by carrying absolutely everything balanced precariously all in one go and then that moment when you remember why you promised yourself you wouldn't ever do that again - and the half hour or hour spent making up for wanting to save time at the beginning - we are all apparently very human 😊 Also - I just loved this beautiful painting.
I am currently adding baskets, tins, trays, and bags to my daily life, in an attempt to reduce these moments. I feel both silly and satisfied to pack and unpack when only traveling to another room, lol. In my head, I am simply making object picnics for each task. 😂
I've been binge watching old Antiques Roadshow episodes from UK. Three months ago I knew nothing about paintings. Now when they show dark, dingy museum paintings I actually say out loud "Somebody call Julian!" When they show a conservator working on a painting I know what is happening at each step and recognize when they are doing it like you would. It feels good to learn so much in 3 months.
Watching you begin to remove the varnish on the center-right pale pink peony made me surprisingly catch my breath. I'm mid 60's and I can tell you that's a rare occurrence. I was so taken aback by the vibrant yet delicate pink color where seconds ago there was a drab and dirty coral. Thank you for giving this artist's flowers back their beauty and sharing the transformation.
Hello, Would you consider doing a video like "A week in my studio"? The reason I'm asking that is because we see you doing one painting at the time during your videos. From A to Z But, in reality, for example after the hot table treatment I don't think that you just sit and wait for the acclimation is done to keep working. You probably go to another project, refurnish your supplies, clean everything, do the paperwork needed, respond to potential clients.... So one video in the type of "Spend a week with me" could allow us to have a better grasp on your day to day professional life. I mean I guess you have to do some mental gymnastic between working a painting A, then on a painting B ... I would love to hear you talk about this aspect of your work. And I also think that there so much more work that is not directly in contact with a painting that you do but mandatory that I would love to just have a taste of. For exemple also I would love to hear about how you do an estimate on renovating a painting. But i won't ask for that since in my eyes this is very "personnal" and we as the public don't need to know how much exactly it cost for a painting to go through your hands and expertise
i would love to see this too, and i believe he has once mentioned before in an old video that he does work on other projects while he's waiting for the ones on the tables to be ready, like he cycles through multiple.
Wow! The moment you took off the old varnish on the first blush pink peonie... my jaw dropped. I was in aw of the beauty and vibrance of that beautiful color! And the feather like texture of the petals popped up so much more. Wow!
Oh, peonies are my favourite flowers! I love how they look and how they smell too. Peonies remind me of summers spent in rural places (villages, homesteads, small towns). It felt like every house had at least one peony bush. I definitely would like to have such a painting. Like always, great job!❤
Yes my granny had them near her home in a rural farming area. They had a lovely scent that takes me back. They must have thrived on neglect and I haven't had any luck growing them 😀
The most revealing episode of the whole story, after years of watching Julian perform such meticulous work that would make a Japanese man sweat, I always wondered how he would react when things go wrong, as he is seen as a very serene and patient person. That small and almost insignificant glass jar brought us the most authentic reaction. I never expected to hear a slur, but neither did that phrase. AWESOME.
We (my young children and I) love watching your work! We also found out that your studio is about 25 mins from my mom's residence 😁 My children were so excited to hear this, but don't worry, we won't drive by to look through your windows in awe. 😅
I think you and I could get along, as I respond in a similar fashion to something bad happening that makes life more difficult for the moment. And the "700 billion, 500 thousand, 821 1/2" bit was hilarious, as I too use such exaggerations to deal with the aforementioned moment of suck. 🤣 Thank you very much for the great content, and for showing how you make mistakes as well.
Fantastic!! What a beautiful painting! Even just cleaning it made a huge difference, but then adding in the varnish removal and a SECOND cleaning? Wow!! I'm betting the client is thrilled with what beauty they're getting back!
This is a very pretty painting. Reminding us that decorative work can be high quality. And the tacks. My Dad had a workshop. He rigged high power magnets to the shop vacuum. Any nails were trapped. Just a thought.
I am always amazed at the craftsmanship required for this work. I have great respect for your skills and knowledge. Thank you for bringing me into your realm of craftsmanship.
Was it just me, but there was an eerie visceral reaction when you started uncovering the shades of pink in the bloom in the center of the painting above the red one... it was a reaction to the shades of colors... bright like summer; bright like a crisp white snowscape; a reaction in my brain to the light...😶
Julian, a little tip for you to clean the baseplate of your iron. Heat the iron up, turn it off, rub with paracetamol tablets. Don’t breathe fumes in. Bring it up like new. ❤
Something I've learned to help prevent glass jars of tacks smashing on the floor is a tray, or other sturdy box with handles, rather than balancing things precariously in your arms.
The glass jars are aesthetically pleasing, but what you need is Glad sandwich storage containers. They're unbreakable, see-through, and stackable. Everybody has an opinion. 🌹🌷🥀🌹🌷
Thank you for opening my eyes. I have always thought that paintings of peonies were depressing. Now, I see, they just needed cleaning. Now, I want my own painting of peonies.
Watching your restoration videos is like watching a magician reveal the rabbit out of a hat or flowers out of thin air. Simply magical. The true hidden beauty coming out is like spring bursting into bloom after a long, hard winter. Thank you for the loving work you do to save such beauty.
Oh man, I felt your pain when those tacks fell. Been there, done that, only my craft room is no where near as neat and tidy as your studio. I’m still finding tacks in and around things to this day 😄. Best wishes from Scotland x
sometimes the simplest things are the most stunning. I'm always surprised and pleased by how radical a transformation the conservation work on this channel always makes.
On top of being pleasant and wonderful to watch, these 'simple' restorations still seem like an incredible amount of work and really put more perspective around the scope of the grand 5 part projects that we've seen previously.
There is a peony patch at what was my grandmother's house. I remember from the early 50s when I was a small boy. They, easly, could be over 100 years old. I now have my own patch at the corner of my house, next to my forsythia. If you ever hear anyone talking about pineys, they mean peonies.
Thank you for reminding me that I want to plant at least three peonies this year. Even their leaf structure is beautiful! Thank you also for removing that second layer of varnish. I was looking at the painting and wondering why I didn't feel like it was there yet. You answered that question, and the peonies became not just pretty but wild and glorious! Peace unto you, now and always.🐈⬛🫖📚🕊
Your exceptional craftsman(person?)ship is wonderfull to watch, along with your conversation describing what your plans will be for a restoration. And when you reveal the TA DA! moment at the end of your videos: I wonder, can you hear all of our “oo and ahhs”? Even the camera effect makes it look like a curtain opening for the big reveal. “Bravo!”
I just wanted to comment that I've been watching and loving your videos for years, your videos made me love art restoration and I'm happy to say that I just started an art restoration course two days ago in Italy, keep making videos and inspiring people❤
having watched a great many of your magnificent restorations, I have to admit that I NEVER tire of hearing you explain each step you take along the way. It feels like a Lullaby in some respects, although it does NOT put me to sleep ☺☺☺ Thank you for sharing your Art
I don't know why I hold my breath whilst I watch you perform your magic, but I do ... every time. And then I find tears rolling down my face to hear your words and watch the process and see the finished results. 🤩 I know its not easy to film and do the voiceovers, but I so appreciate every single one. Thank you so much. p.s. I'm so sorry for the mishap with the jar!! I'm awfully glad you had Kitt there to help with that. I hope you both are staying warm with these below zero temps hitting us here in the burbs of Chicago! 🤗❤
BRILLIANT WORK! EXQUISITE painting! I love peonies, and this painting features at least one of mine. 'Festiva Maxima' was introduced in 1851, and is easily recognizable by the red flecks at the base of a pure white blossom. The fragrance is one you never forget, and I look forward to it every spring. Thank you for your exceptional work!🎨
By the way, I'm a huge fan of the channel, never miss one video. I love how the channel shows the paintings and sculptures in their sheer materiality, apart from the representation or the ideas, it's like showing the guts of a work of art.
The refreshed painting really did reveal the subtle color variances of the original painting. I wish we could have seen more of the painting in close-up mode. A good job, well done is something to be proud of.
This guy will never throw shade at artists but will throw unlimited shade at other conservators

I agree, I also love to be able to predict what Julian will do next in a restoration.
I love screaming Belgian linen! everytime he says bridging lol
We love a straight forward restoration on a regular basis.
The more the merrier, though I do love the 3 or 4 part restorations. I also love watching Julian problem solving with his mechanical skills too.

His inventions are truly amazing.
I agree. I found this video most informative and enjoyable. Yes straight forward and with no philosophical comments! The music is pleasant to hear. Thank you
A magnet is a useful addition to a workshop to pick up dropped tacks/nails, leaving the glass shards to be swept up

I was imagining him scooting around using his tacking hammer. Although humorous, I'm sure he used a larger magnet for this one.
He didn't swear - very impressive. Love the calmness of his personality.
I wonder if he stores the tacks in glass for a specific reason? The look of the jars is a nice mood, but glass shards and delicate art don't mix well. There is a lot to be said for storing things in tins with lids that latch well. :)

Aesthetically I think this is one of my favourite paintings you've worked on.
Agreed. The pink and white ones are my favorites.
Julian trying to match his shirts with the painting? 🙈
Isn't it lovely? The artist is a master to make it look so effortless.
Agreed, lovely painting.
Mine was the 'forest for the trees'. I was stunned to see those colors appear!
I must see this mystery "half-tack" you found on your floor at 14:22
So excited, we have a restoration video! With your new video series, I was afraid that we wasn’t going to get restorations anymore. 😅
I think you meant we *weren't*

The little canvas vacuum gives me a lot of joy 😂
The tiny vacuum is that little hero that just satisfies my soul
All of his tools give me joy. Watching him lay them out and use each one can be as beautiful as the artworks themselves.
Can’t adequately express how much I enjoy watching and listening to you work.
I'm glad that what happened offscreen was just a tack jar being dropped and not you hurting yourself!
The depth of such vibrant colour is really evident in those Peony petals, they’re absolutely gorgeous. I’m glad that you’ve restored it to full glory
It’s like someone turned on the lights! The painting literally bloomed into full colour! Stunning!
