Had a gearbox go out that had a spur gear cut into the 1 1/2" shaft. The new gearbox had a 7/8" shaft with a key way. So I had to cut the old shaft/gear off the old box, and bore a 7/8" hole in it to slide onto the new shaft. However the root diameter of the gear was right at 7/8" so I had to stop the bore before the gear. Then I had to cut a key way into the blind hole, so it was impossible to use a conventional key way broach. I used this technique with my Shop Task. I was surprised that it was able to cut the groove all the way to the back of the blind hole. Time consuming, but it worked!

The paper on the Antikythera Mechanism is in Academic review which basically means that his contentions and facts are checked and considered by professional archaeological experts. If the reviewers have any questions they write to him and ask for them to be explained. He then has to prepare academically acceptable explanations and send them back to the reviewers. Once all these exchanges are completed a final decision will be arrived at to decide whether the paper will be published or not. The whole process can take several months per series of queries. This is normal operating procedure for any academic publication in a properly peer reviewed journal. It is why peer review is considered the gold standard of publication. It has already been through several cycles but no one knows how long it will take before a decision is reached. Once the Antikythera paper is published things will return to normal.
It goes faster than you would think. It’s not taking full cuts for the first bit, and then maybe cutting 2 thou once it is cutting the full width of the broaching tool... key way might be at depth after 50-100 passes, which take a only a few minutes

I just stopped by to mention the Antikithera mechanism!
I've done this before, and it's a real chore. Also it abuses the saddle handwheel drive gear.
I would suggest using this method on a softer metal
If the drive gear was made out of wood then i would see this as abuse. Otherwise, there is no abuse to it.
