Floating man, I try not to be something I'm not, a common woman I may be, but I've never sat on a sofa critisizing the world or people in it, I crave intelligent inspiration. I don't spend my time downing others for gratitude, wish you well.
o yes. whenever you feel sad or bored, just go to youtube and listen to Stephen Fry talking about whatever. You'll feel a lot better. Total Fry fan here too!
If it was my great grandparents previous home I would have liked to visit the rooms that my great grandparents lived in before they were taken from. So upsetting the memory of what they endured. It is a pity the lady couldn't let Mr Fry see the place his family lived & loved. He surely would love to walk through the home. He did not want to ask & it's so much nicer when someone offers!
It looks as though that building was not the family's original home. According to the document, they had been moved there (probably forcibly), a few years before they were deported to Riga.
1:13 That's so funny I'm thirty now and I haven't spoken to kid since I was like a kid lol, it's been ages since I've felt that nervous but assertive energy
I love interacting with kids! They’re the most bringer and thoughtful! It’s a real joy like they say. I have a lot of nieces and nephews I babysit haha. I can’t wait to be a mum.
Braun is a German name, not Slavic, though... although what with Central Europe being the cultural crossroads it often was in history, that side of your family can very well be a whole mixture on its own. :-)
"They were in the years of national-socialist tyranny 1938-1945 evicted, deported and murdered" The 'eviction' part likely comes into play because the local Jews were first forcibly moved to ghettos for a few years before being deported to a concentration camp in Riga.
And because of that ancestors, Stephen is elligable to vote in the austrian parliament election this year. There is a special clause for austrian citizenship that people who's austrian ancestors got deported or killed ect. can apply for austrian citizenship, and don't need to fulfill all the other requirements everyone else has to. As kind of "reparations" for the matter that their ancestors citizenship did not protect them back then. (my interpretation)
Stephen engaging with those two boys at the beginning is just adorable.
This man is a gem! A brightly sparkling one.
How very thoughtful of that lady to remember them through the plaque.
oh you sound awfully common!

Do you like Harry Potter?

I listen to him talk all night on audiobooks. Best voice actor ever. And a great human being.
The horror in his face when he sees the name plaque, sees his Great Grandparents on it, then realised it’s for holocaust victims.
László it’s awful isn’t it! 😱😱😱
Just the dramatic change in his voice breaks my heart
the lady and stephen fry were so touched by this. i think he felt in a way relieved finding that plaque on this house.
This man has had a lot of family lost in Holocaust. Heavy and emotional.
Extraordinary. This show is what inspired me to start my own family tree on Ancestry. Now I can't stop checking out the site!
Stephen Fry has a sweet soul

sounds like she lives in the building not in their former apartment - not for her to continence other tenants to do something they not wanting to do 🤔

Can anyone translate what the plaque says at 3:57 ?

"They were in the years of national-socialist tyranny 1938-1945 evicted, deported and murdered"

Wow, I didn't know Stephen speaks German
His German is quite adorable being it slightly mispronounced at times.
German is commonly taught in English schools. Don't forget that their royal family comes from Germany.
Meist Englischmaenner koennen sprechen Deutsch Aber wir tun nicht so als nicht auszusehen zu schlau.
