Well, the album that turned Oasis into the probably the biggest band of the 90s was “What’s the story, morning glory”. I suspect every UK household had that album. In my opinion it is like Sgt Peppers of the 60s, Led Zeppelin IV of the 70s and Thriller of the 80s.

I second this. Definitely Maybe, then What's the story. Whilst Def May is my favourite album, the second Album is a more refined sound.

@@rileyindieman1if you want more of the anthems and soften up record, then go with WTSMG. If you want more raw rock, then go with Definitely Maybe. Also, I tend to listen to DM more than WTSMG cause I skip tracks less and Supersonic is my fav Oasis song so ya

This is my favourite song of all time, from my favourite Oasis album. I was lucky to see Noel play in my hometown last night, he wrote most of the songs for Oasis. Enjoy your journey.

A good way to differentiate the two is to listen to the vocal tone. Noel (songwriter and guitarist) has a very pure, clear voice and he utilizes vibrato a lot. Liam (lead vocalist) has a very rough voice, and he uses no vibrato, which is what gives him his signature style. Most singers would use vibrato during long notes, but Liam extends it out forcefully without vibrato. That's what leads to his iconic maybeeeee's in this song and wonderwall. They sound completely unique because of the unnatural way he forces it out. It's bad technique and awful for his voice's health, but it's damn iconic.

Despite their somewhat wonky reputation, Oasis were a band that pushed themselves to the top of the charts worldwide... This was their first album 'Definitely maybe'... this video was filmed in 1994 w/ the original band.
It was lead singer Liam Gallagher who brought Oasis together around 1991... he was asked to join a local band in Manchester, England called Rain, w/ guitarist Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs, Paul 'Guigsy' McGuigan on bass and Tony McCarroll on drums... Liam renamed the band Oasis.
Meanwhile, Liam's older brother Noel Gallagher was touring as a guitar tech for bands... he was shocked when he heard that his annoying kid brother had joined a rock band... Noel went to a local show and saw Oasis perform and was impressed. Liam knew that Noel was always writing songs and playing guitar at home, and he asked Noel to join Oasis and improve their original songwriting. Noel finally agreed to join Oasis on guitar w/ the condition that he write all the songs for the band... they had no problem w/ that (Their material was admittedly not the best).
In 1993, Oasis forced their way into a showcase gig for labels and got the attention of indie UK label Creation records... Once signed, Noel got busy and wrote more new material and one of them was this song - 'Live forever'... and even the band knew it was special. Noel also forced the band to record their debut album 3 times cos he wanted "the most important rock album since Nirvana's 'Nevermind' "... Creation records started releasing the first Oasis singles in 1993 and 1994... and 'Supersonic' was one video that captured national attention on MTV Europe that year... On tour, Oasis were conquering the UK one gig after another... In the fall of 1994, the debut album 'Definitely maybe' hit #1 on the UK charts (it became the fastest-selling debut album since The Beatles) and Oasis were also put on tour in the USA for the first time... In early 1995, the single 'Live forever' just took over the world on MTV and the album went gold in the US... sold 8 million copies worldwide.
In 1995, Noel Gallagher had a new batch of songs for Oasis' second record, but felt that drummer Tony McCarroll was not musically proficient to play it... so McCarroll was fired and Alan White (drums) joined Oasis to record the album "(What's the story?) Morning Glory"... Once the single 'Wonderwall' became a massive hit worldwide, Oasis were literally the biggest UK band on the planet, selling 22 million copies worldwide (4 million in the US).
In total, Oasis recorded 7 studio albums until their split in 2009... An 8th album 'The Masterplan' was a 1998 release featuring a collection of Oasis songs that didn't make the first 3 albums. Their first 3 records were the biggest... 3rd album 'Be here now' was a big seller, but because Noel Gallagher was deep into drug use, the songs came out longer and more unfocused... the original Oasis split in 1999, and new members were brought in by 2000... the 4th album 'Standing on the shoulder of giants' was not as successful, and was very much a Noel Gallagher album w/ Liam on lead vocals.
Liam was not happy w/ the 5th Oasis album 'Heathen chemistry', despite the band contributing songs w/ Noel... it was a musically shaky album at best and the least successful Oasis album in 2002... 6th album "Don't believe the truth" arrived in 2005... by this point, longtime drummer Alan White had left Oasis, replaced by drummer Zak Starkey (the son of The Beatles' drummer Ringo Starr), who recorded the last 2 Oasis albums. Oasis started surging in popularity again in the US as the single 'Lyla' became a hit in the UK... The final 7th Oasis album 'Dig out your soul' in 2008 actually charted in the US top 10... but the conflicts between Liam & Noel Gallagher reached a breaking point in 2009 and Noel quit the band...
If u compare Liam & Noel in concert, the 2 brothers have 2 different vocal deliveries... Noel is a gifted songwriter, but doesn't quite have the vocal range and stage presence that Liam has... Oasis did an 'MTV Unplugged' show in 1996, which Noel Gallagher sang entirely (brother Liam was in poor shape after a drinking bender and sat out the show)... Compare that to Liam Gallagher's 'MTV Unplugged' show filmed in 2019 and u see the difference between the 2 brothers' vocal abilities.

Takes me back to my teens. With this coming after Supersonic and Shakermaker it's no surprise the band were destined for greatness. Great songs were getting churned out even on the singles b sides which had everyone hooked. Throw into the mix their swagger and attitude and it's clear every teen boy at the time wanted to be them.

They’re the best band ever. They’ve got 7 studio albums, 2 compilation albums, and 2 live albums. They’re first 3 albums follow their iconic sound and then their sound changes a bit for the next 4 but it’s still all Oasis to the bone. The first 2: Definitely Maybe & (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? are their most famous. I’d say just start with Definitely Maybe and go in order.
