    I am following your tutorial in 2022 and it is just amazing as always
    I get my spf3 board in the few last days it's a 6dof acro board but I just upgraded it to the delux version by simply soldering hmc5883 and the ms baro and it's working grate
    Thank you very much for this series
    By the way I spend the past 2 years on developing 2 version of my own 10dof flight controller board which was a success and it just working great taking into consideration that they work on atmel328p and atmel2560 for the pro board and runs on multiwii 2.4 software but they just work very good even with 10dof sensors and GPS plugged in

    If youre having issues using U-Blox program and the gps not connecting, if you're using a usb hub, be sure there are nothing else plugged in with the gps... I had a mouse plugged in and it conflicted with the gps.. once I unplugged the mouse it worked perfectly...and just used the mouse pad instead.

    Very nice video :D
    I have a couple of Ublox GPS , i have used a couple of them with baseflight long time ago! First thing i can say, it was more easy to configure on Baseflight but i had just used it for my OSD not for flight mode :)
    Thanks again for sharing and have a great weekend

      Don't forget, if it's UBLOX you can get CF to setup the GPS automatically. That's about as easy as it gets! Happy flying!

    Great video. Always enlightening. The step was perfect and just one adjustment needed for me. In 22:57, you are set the GPS to Ublox protocol in GUI but for my case it kept the NMEA after I save and reboot the board. Fix it by CLI command :
    set gps_provider=UBLOX
    SAVE
    Hope this works for other having the same problem.

      Sounds like a bug in the version you're using. These kinds of things come and go in Clean/Betaflight. If you are interested in GPS then I'd look at running iNav.. Best of luck!

    Excellent job, 2 months ago would have been even better. I did this with a neo-m8n which takes 3.6v but battery was bad, bumped up to 5v and it now works perfectly. GPS hold does not do the ever increasing circle but does not hold alt. Forgot to try switching on barro at the same time, thought that should be part of hold. RTH IS AMAZING, comes back makes about 1.5 circles from take off and holds dead on, again no alt hold. I'm tickled crap-less. I have an unlisted beginner vid of my last test if any one wants to see.

      Its great to hear that you have it working. Lots of work from the developers on making the GPS code more robust so more of us can get that same grin! :)

    Hello, thanks for your video. I'm working on connecting my Neo-6M to my SP F3 Racing. The GPS is working fine on the PC using the ftdi adapter. I've configured it just like you showed and just like it's stated in the cleanflight documentation.
    My problem is: it does not show that it's got a gps in the configurator. Do you have any idea what could be the problem?
    I've connected it to UART3 which is not being used for anything else. I'm using the latest betaflight firmware (same as cleanflight). All baudrates, wiring etc have been checked.
    I also couldn't get gpspassthrough to work, which might be a hint.. I don't know what this could mean.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

      thanks, glad there's someone who doesn't say 'not possible' ^^ I've got my gps module working. I bought the cheapest gps unit I could (Neo 6M) and it works. Make sure to connect it to UART2. I tried 3, cause it was also unused, but does not work.
      Problem is: I got gps signal, but my flight modes don't work. You need a compass(magnetometer) to get gps modes to work (which my flight controller doesn't have). So I'm waiting for the cheapest compass to arrive. Right now, the dron just circles uncontrolled around the desired position.
      What are you planning?

    I have both a old basecam 8 bit gimbal (the one you demonstrated a while ago) as well as this GPS, and it appears they use a 1.25mm spacing "molex picoblade" style connector, which I guess went out of style for some reason. My Seriously Pro F3 EVO board instead uses (according to the manual) a micro-JST-SH connector, which is incompatible. What should I be looking for to get some cables that would allow interfacing between the controller and my peripherals?

    • @power-max
      @power-max 7 лет назад

      ALso, unfortunately, it appears my receiver (flysky FS T6) does not have a PPM output, how can I configure cleanflight to accept inputs from it? Which pins are used for parallel PWM input? Thanks!

      I have the Seriously Pro F3 EVO, and the pinout is different. I'm unsure if your tutorial is compatible with that version. I'm mainly trying to figure out for sure what type of connectors the old BS gimbal and CYRUS UBLOX GPS use.
      I picked this particular version because it utilizes the MPU9500, which integrates MPU6500 and mag, and has a barometer (although admittedly the baro that's on you version of the board produces more accurate and less noisy results. I hope that the board can use GPS altitude instead of the baro or in conjunction with the baro for height regulation.)

  • @EvilRace

    Thanks for the video. Will the gps be detected in a 6DOF spf3? I know that gps won't be available, but still the coordinates and altitude in the osd can be useful. Thanks.

    I had some confusion and hope you can clarify something for me. Why do we set the GPS up for UART 1 and then physically plug it into UART 2 and set up the F3 on UART 1? For over two weeks I thought YOU made a mistake and then I finally decided to just do what you said and VOILA! It works. I you have time to explain or tell me where to look I'd appreciate it.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 лет назад

      The Cleanflight documentation is very good at covering all of this. I have to admit that we struggled to get some of this working and ended up talking to Hydra to get some of it working. The PORTS tab used to be a lot more sensitive to config errors and would let you do things that would stop the board from booting or be deleted as an invalid config without warning. Just follow the video for the easy ways to setup! :D

    Thanks Painless 360 really helped me. I was able to use auto config when I change my baud rate to 57600 . GPS came on immediately never so glad than when I saw that green blinking led light my first quad build completed YEH!

      Thanks again I tried clean flights gps and I must admit it was disappointing although running every other mode it was excellent. except for the 18 crashes I had in 1 hour LOL.. I had alot of fun but this type of flying isn't what I was looking for. The DJI Naza M v2 is what I was more looking for. I have flashed INAV on my board Sp F3 everything is running including 3d GPS Lock for the first time awesome. Never could get that to fully work in clean flight. Now for my question Why do you think INAV doesn't support D SHOT ? I didn't realize until I when to calibrate esc that. I had to reflash my esc too multi-shot and then go back to INAV and set protocol to multi-shot before I could calibrate them and get flying. Took me a couple of days researching before I realized my error. Part of the hobby I guess. Also figured out how to change the tones in the goggle app BLHELI configurator there doesn't seem to be any videos online of this . Only ones are using of old configurator . The most recent was 2 day days ago. I bet pilots would very much like the new way no downloading or trying to find the wright firmware just update and use the slider write and all done. Thanks again for your help watching all your INAV vids now.

    Hello, this is a great video, its because of your videos that I have managed to build 2 quadcopters! I would like to ask you: Do I need to preconfigure my UBLOX NEO-M8N with the computer method that you demonstrate here, in order to use it in iNav? I have already installed it onto my spracing f3 evo running the latest inav version and it does get a 3D fix with the gps module as is and shows the correct position in the gps tab, but when I go out to fly the quadcopter, poshold is terrible!!!

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  7 лет назад

      See the iNav series on the channel for lots of detail on that. The GPS module should auto-configure. In that series we also cover the causes of less than ideal poshold too.. Best of luck with it!

    I have my GPS configured via Ublox (double checked) but when I connect to Cleanflight it won't allow me to properly configure UART 2. If I select the baud rate 9600 for example and check Serial port it doesn't save the configuration. It will only save the baud rate but when configuring the port it reverts to being grayed out! GPS is showing good lock but nothing in CF. Any suggestions as I'm all out of them. Mike

      +Mike Hawkey no idea, sorry. What we did is all in the video. If you're interested in GPS functions, then I suggest looking at the iNav series on the channel. Much more useful than cleanflight or betaflight for GPS

    You can use ublox resource without using a FTDI adapter on Inav Cleanflight by typing gpspassthrough in CLI disconnecting cleanflight and connecting ublox.. Works on naze32 not sure about F3 boards .

      Well, if you read the SPRacingF3 Manual, the UART2 on the FB is the one with 5V (either logic level or VCC)
      thats why its connected there, the other ones are either debug, 3.3v or some other thing

  • @octavianminescu

    Hi my name is Octavian and I am a follower of your channel.
    I am writing to ask you for some help to pick the right GPS model for my drone
    I am planning to install GPS to my quadcopter and play with various functions such as return to home or flying missions. After quite a lot of reading, I have got a rough idea on how to do it but I am still uncertain about which of the different types or models of the NEO-M8N GPS & COMPASS it's the right for my drone, ( I am flying an Eachine wizard x220 with a F3 6DOF, flight controller, that run betafligh).
    I have found the same Neo m8n GPS and Compass module with different connection cable plugs:
    First the module with two plugs on the end of the cable ( one plug with 4 cables and another one with two cables in total 6 cables) to be used with APM & PIXhawk.
    Second the module it's the one with 4 cables with individual plugs to be used with Naze 32.
    The third mkdule it's the one with one plug with 4 cables to be used with CC3D & SP Racing F3. ( but some of the sellers and saying the dis module don't have compass).
    m.banggood.com/Mini-Ublox-M8N-GPS-Module-NEO-M8N-GPS-for-APM-2_52_62_8-CC3D-SP-Racing-F3-Naze32-Flip32-PX4-p-1035454.html?gmcCountry=GB¤cy=GBP&createTmp=1&cur_warehouse=CN&ID=520667&gclid=Cj0KCQiAyszSBRDJARIsAHAqQ4pi1xLFuw7Du28Qk2oEgvme4lQgS44SedaC6FIt0ImVkxAs6cOaCgwaAlM7EALw_wcB
    What I have understood from all I have read is that the third one it's right for my flight controller,
    but!
    Has this model compass even it has just for cables (GRD, 5V, TX, RX) comparing with the first one that has 6 cables into plugs (GRD, 5V, TX, RX, / SDA, SCL)?
    Can I use the one with 6 cables with my flight controller?
    Is there any way to connect them to my flight controller in the way so I can have compass to? ( this including cutting off the plugs and soldering the wires directly to the board).
    I am thinking to buy the module with 6 wires because in the future I want to buy a pixhawk module to build a drone.
    Can I install cleanflight on my wizard x220?
    Or can you recommend me another GPS that works with my wizard X220
    Thank you very much.

    Good video but I am curious why you decided to go with a serial GPS vs an I2C GPS. I would think you are running short on UARTs on the SP3, especially when adding Smart.Port telemetry (looking forward to the video that covers that) and could have save a UART by using a I2C GPS instead. Thanks.

      +Painless360 My mistake. After I posted this, I found CleanFlight issue #363 github.com/cleanflight/cleanflight/issues/363 which shows it is not yet supported. Sorry for thinking it was supported. Given this, I am even more interested to see how you get the SP3 to support Smart Port, GPS, S.Bus, and WS2812 LEDs all at the same time.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 лет назад

      It's easier than you think. In v1.10 (out very soon) we get the SoftSerial features back in SP3 so we can then add another two low bandwidth peripherals again.
      I am fighting with an issue with having more than one telemetry type at once but I've flagged that to the developers..

    I've done all the steps and set the device (neo m8n) to update at 200ms, which should work according to what I've read. Problem is, when I plug the device into a pc it's recognized as a mouse and starts screwing with my normal mouse. Is this a common problem, because from what I've read so far it's not so easy to fix.

    I'm trying to set up the gps with u center but when i want to setup the msg part i can only change one of them and after this i can not swithch to another selection in the drop down..... Maybe i'm doing something wrong ??? Can you post your saved configuration file ? Maybe it works like that... Kind regards: Jan

      If you're looking at GPS modes then I'd look at iNav. It's auto-configure for the GPS works great and means that you just need to plug it in and not mess about with all this in Cleanflight.. Best of luck!

      The best way is to use iNav on a flight controller that you're looking to use GPS on - it'll autoconfigure it for you.. See my iNav series..

    hi there, thanks as always for your videos :)
    I bought the same GPS ublox8 from hobbyrc and I'm following your video step by step
    now I have a problem when it comes to the msg part, after setting up the first one (either NAV-POSLLH or any one else as first 1), i select the second one but after 2 seconds it automatically comes back to the first 1 I' ve set and it does not allow me to complete the procedures. do you have any idea on why thes is happening? I'm using the last u-center version 8.24.
    also a strange thing in the ports, when you set the part, I get on screen USART instead, is the same thing?
    last thing, how do you get the fix indoor? :))
    thanks
    btw, on hobbyrc webpage they say to use the iNav, what do you think?

    I was wondering if you ever experienced this GPS module losing it's settings after a period of no power. +Painless360 Seems that did the trick, I have a Crius Neo 6m v3.0, but I got it second hand off ebay, and its seen better days.
      Maybe the same would happen to a new unit, just takes longer for the battery to run low. I was also worried that mine mite have been a cheap copy that tends to be constructed without the eeporm. After looking up the chips on the board I spotted the i2c eeprom chip, so I knew then the setting were going for some other reason :)

    I had a small problem problem with the GPS in the final stable version of this f3 flight controller the GPS function is not working because cleanflight disable the GPS function in controllers that has small memory so I downgrad my firmware to lawer version and every thing is working perfect on cleanflight with the correct config for the GPS receiver but the board doesn't talk to the GPS and I double check the config and the baud rate and also the ports
    GPS is 3d locking but no data received on the f3 board side

    Great instructions, yet again..... I have a mates Sp Racing F3 EVO RevE purple 2016 model to setup with the BG BN-880 GPS module. The layout is different than your presentation one, obviously, an evolved one. The UART2 is on the LH side of the uUSB but have still configured this in Cleanflight Ports, to accept this for the GPS module
    Having gone through your instructions at least half doz time's still cannot get CF to recognize the GPS module, I note that the GPS Protocol will not change from NMEA to UBLOX !? and at the top of the CF Configurator the GPS indicator is off....please any idea's

      I've not used that GPS here, I'd look at how it's configured. Best of luck!

    How is GPS hold and GPS home modes working now as of July 2016?

      Still waiting for the iNav code to be merged back in to Cleanflight.. github.com/cleanflight/cleanflight/blob/master/docs/Modes.md

      Do you use the iNav version of Cleanflight configurator and the iNav flirmware for your flight controller? Many people have said positive things about the project fork.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 лет назад

      All covered in the project documentation - github.com/cleanflight/cleanflight/blob/master/docs/Installation.md best of luck!

      I was asking specifically if you use iNav... not sure how the Cleanflight installation URL answers that question? Hehe.

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 лет назад

      Not personally, I'm waiting for the code to make it back in Cleanflight before making any more videos. There are over 100 forks of Cleanflight/Baseflight now and it's simply too complex to track and document without devoting huge amounts of time to it. Happy flying!

    Can you please make an update video for GPS hold on an F3 flightcontroller with betaflight?

    • @Painless360

      No point, GPS modes in BF are far from perfect. Check out the iNav series on the channel if it's GPS you want..

      Painless360 ok, thanks, but I have to stick with Betaflight :/

      Painless360 Thanks, I know... Maybe trying to use my racequad for everything is not the great idea... I made a detachable gimbal and landing gear for it(which works better than I thought, setting up a servo output in Betaflight for the gimbal controller wasn't very easy, but now it works). The only thing left to use it as a Areal Photography Platform is altitude hold, throttle hold is way too inaccurate.

      @Painless360  5 лет назад

      Lots, this is one of the older series. Cleanflight is dead, Betaflight has recently made its first little steps to adding useful GPS features and iNav has had solid GPS support for a few years now.. check out the playlists. Best of luck!

    I followed all the steps in u-center, including saving the configuration, but when I cycle the power the configuration reverts back to the default. I'm using a Ublox Neo-6M with EEPROM. Any ideas anyone?

      Make sure you are saving the configuration and the GPS you are using has a battery backup that's working..

    Hi, Im looking to add a GPS module to my quadcopter. Im also running this FC and I would like to know if there are any better options out there since this video is a bit old. Will this work with Betafight and can I setup features like return to home with this GPS. If the quadcopter gets lost, how can I find out the last recorded location of this GPS? Thank you in advance! Is this GPS any better? Beitian Micro BN-220 GPS

    • @Painless360

      You need to look at using SoftSerial if you're running out of Hardware UARTS. Be aware that they only support slower speeds on Naze32 boards so reduce the GPS speeds down to 19.2Kbaud.. Best of luck!
