S. Korea has a 2 year mandatory conscription. While most boys stop watching music shows out of highschool since they no longer have to fit in, they are pretty much forced to watch TV again living in the barracks. The easiest TV show to kill time is watching the music channel. Like it or not if you watch a girl group enough you kind of get to know their songs inside out and gossip about their biases. Keep in mind this is where no females exist so they can fanboy all they want and most likely watch male soldiers doing the TT dance for laughs. After military service they probably drop out of fanboying on new groups since they stop watching TV but they'll still remain fans and will want to attend concerts with fellow prior service males.
