  • In this video we check out the Blackview MP80 mini PC featuring Intel's N97 CPU. In this review we check out the MP80's performance and features. Intel's N97 is what I wanted to see as the successor to the 11th gen budget CPUs and the Blackview MP80 mini works well.

    Hey, nice to see this review; I've been curious as all hell about it. For $180 it's hard to complain but even though I'm pretty comfortable working inside mini's (NUC's and Beelinks) this one sure looks like it makes it difficult. I'd also pay a bit more for a slightly larger box that would enable a 2280 drive. Still, fair review and I can see why people would like it.

    You are right, this level of budget CPU+iGPU performance feels like what the N100 originally should have been.

    When Intel names CPU's, they apparently have no sense of common sense in naming; just a confusing lot of names like each was pulled out of a hat. Consumer : What's faster ? 6005, N95, N100, N97, N305, etc, etc. Intel: WDGAF what we name things.

      Funny thing, they just launched a campaign to slander AMD's horrid naming scheme, in particular the ryzen 5 mendocino for being zen 2 based

      @@Robtech Im surprised they didn't just call it an n105
      It's just an n100 with higher clocks right, given that they just use better yields to achieve that you'd expect them to keep the naming in line

    I found that the HDMI ports, at least on the N95 flavor of the MP80, are NOT HDMI 2.0; while it can do 4K60, it must use 4:2:0 chroma subsampling. Using RGB mode, I couldn't even use my WQHD monitor at 60Hz; 3440 x 1440 is limited to 50Hz, which is coincidentally the limit of HDMI 1.4 spec!

    I'd have been more interested if they charged a bit more for a slightly larger system with 2.5gb Lan and a 2280 m.2. I can see that this would be good for some people though, especially at $180.

    Intel N97 system-on-chip has 9 lanes of PCIe 3 for board designers to allocate, including support for dual 2.5 GbE and USB 3.2 Gen 2. It is unfortunate that Blackview's offering does not max out the N97's potential, but the $180 price is appealing for those who would cash in their pop bottles to buy a mini PC with somewhat improved graphics. Look to ASRock Industrial's iBox-N97 for a DDR4 fanless alternative.

    I purchased this Mini PC, and everything seems to be running smoothly, except for the Wi-Fi speed, which is very slow at around 10 Mbps, while my phone gets up to 100 Mbps. I'm not sure if this is a fault with the PC or if this is to be expected with this product. Is there a way to improve the Wi-Fi speed?

    I mistakenly thought I would prefer a N100 as it would be better binned but this is patently false based on your review, it appears they traded off too much GPU performance for CPU performance on this part. The N100 and N97 are identical silicon(4 core CPU with 24EU GPU Alder lake), only difference is base and turbo clocks based on the designed power limits. n97 listed as a 12W part, N100 as a 6W. But in these devices they are given the same thermal headroom... The only conclusion I can draw is the base/turbo multipliers are very significant and crippling the N100.
    What we really need is a N series with an unlocked multiplier on both GPU and CPU to see how capable this chip is. The N100 would perform similarly if it wasn't being artificial handicapped(Less than half the GPU and CPU base clock as well as 30% less GPU turbo clock).

    Any chance you've gotten the new version of the GMKtec G5 with the N97? It's on sale with a coupon for $150 on Amazon and I am a little curious how much higher the power draw (USB-C power jack) is/if the performance is about the same as the MP80. I guess it doesn't really matter because I already ordered it 😅 but I'm sure it fits in with what you review and your other subscribers will like it, but I also acknowledge you might already have it and are in the review/editing process!

    One thing to be aware is that the N200 is running with seemingly DDR4(3200). Where it should have paired with fastest DRR5 possible. With 32 Execution Unit. It may be on part of the N305. The N100 and N97 have 24EU.

    • @iokwong1871
      @iokwong1871 7 месяцев назад

      @@Robtech To be honest, I really don't expected much about being active cooling. It may be slightly better. But the N200 is a 6W CPU. (N97 is 10-12W) and I really think it is bottlenecked by the RAM. Some soldiered RAM at the 7000Mhz range would probably give you the best performance out of that CPU. But in any case, price is the key factor that doesn't make any sense. At nearly $200 just for the CPU (N200). I can get a much, much better system for maybe $50 more. Given that all of those will be active cooled anyway.

    For someone new to home servers/labs and keen on learning about cloud technology, Docker, and containers while running 1-3 VMs, what type of mini PC would you recommend?. I'm not aiming for gaming or Plex usage, just exploring and experimenting with these technologies. Any recommendations?

    • @Robtech
      @Robtech  8 месяцев назад +2

      For home servers multiple cores are important to handle the concurrent workloads thrown at them. You could start with something like the Ryzen 5500U or 5560U which is 6 cores 12 threads and the best bang for buck at the moment. The Beelink SER5 is one of my favourites with this CPU. You might be able to find a 5700U or 5700H for not much more with will add and extra two cores and four threads.

    • @nadtz
      @nadtz 8 месяцев назад +1

      If you are in the US the SER5 5500U can be found for around $300 and the 5700U for around $350. I have a 5500U that I tested with proxmox and my only complaint was the SSD it came with, it was pretty slow so I replaced it with something faster. Other than that pretty capable especially given how little power it uses.

      The integrated graphics in these are plenty weak for modern titles, so I don't usually test them. But I put Forza Horizon 5 to the test since I have it and at 720P low it was hitting a 24fps average, which is unplayable.
