2024 Mazda CX-90 Plug-In Hybrid Review | This or the Turbo Six?

  • Mazda threw the automotive world for a loop when not only did it bring out a whole new rear wheel drive SUV architecture, but it also introduced a brand new in-line turbo six cylinder along with its first ever plug in hybrid. After spending a week in the 2024 Plug-In Hybrid Premium Plus trim, we thought we would strongly prefer one of the two offered drive trains since they are so different. Not the case! While the in-line six turbo is silky smooth, the PHEV actually seems more fun to drive sometimes, especially when fuel economy is not important and the battery is used in sport mode to provide all all 319 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Do you achieve better fuel savings with this plug in.....after a week we are not quite sure. With only 26 miles of pure EV range, our realistic range in cold temps was only 15-18 miles. 15-18 miles on a full charge that probably cost around $4 is not very efficient and made pure EV operations not cost effective.

    I love my CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus! I’ve already driven just under 12,000 miles on it. I charge it nightly and drive in pure EV mode when just going into town for errands or food and use no gas. On longer drives I drive in sport mode and that gets my mpg to 32-33 mpg unless I decide to have a lot of fun with it 😎🙌🏼. After I use all my EV miles from sport mode I switch it to normal for the remainder of the trip. Btw I leased it first and got $7,500 off as Mazdas lease incentive for the PHEV. I paid zero out the door; I had all taxes and fees and first months payment all rolled into the lease. I also put zero down. Then just before my first lease payment was about to be due I financed the remainder of my car’s lease with my credit union. So I was able to get a $63,000 car (with taxes and fees included) for $56,500 (with taxes and fees included). Saved several thousand dollars 🙌🏼😎🎉

    We bought a CX-90 PHEV GT (top model in Canada) yesterday. Very excited to see how many kilometres we can get on a tank of gas. My son got the same model in October of last year and his best so far is 2800 km on a tank of gas. Appreciate the positive review you gave.

    I leased the PHEV Premium Plus model a couple weeks ago, and I really like it. I'll probably buy out the lease at the end, as long as it continues to work well.

    I leased a CX-90 PHEV at the start of the month, and I've been very impressed with it so far. I'm not normally a person who leases, but the $7500 credit made it more affordable than the base Turbo Premium Plus, and since I mostly work from home, I justified it on gas savings. My average on about 700 miles so far is 45.3 mpg, which is really impressive!
    It's been quite cold here, so I'm also seeing roughly 17-19 miles on a full charge when the weather is in the low 20s. Last weekend it was about 50 degrees, and I managed 23 miles on a full charge. I only have a level 1 charger, so it takes roughly 12 hours to charge from empty to full, which is kind of unfortunate because it means if i have to take more than one trip per day it's on gas. I've had it less than a month, so the jury is still out on whether or not it's actually saving me much money compared to filling up with gas, but regardless it's been a lovely, smooth, quiet, comfortable car to live with, and I've really been loving it.
    The transmission has been totally fine, which I was worried about based on a couple negative reviews. I'm assuming those were early build issues that Mazda already addressed?

    Hello from Germany
    Over here, we have the slightly smaller CX-60. Same platform, same drivetrain. Only engine options are the PHEV and a 3.3 liter Diesel with either 200 PS RWD or 254 AWD. No inline 6 gas option so far. I have ordered the PHEV and I can’t wait for it to arrive in May or June 😊.
    Even though the PHEV drivetrain is absolutely the same, the EV range is so much different between CX-60 and CX-90. The CX-60 is capable of 65 Kilometer (40 miles) EV range, at least under summer conditions and it can tow 2500 kg (5511 lb).
    Okay, the CX-90 is bigger and heavier than the CX-60, but this shouldn’t make that much of a difference. Maybe the much wider tires of the CX-90 (275 > 235) play a role, too.
    EV batteries suffer a lot when you charge them to the maximum and then let them sit in a hot climate environment. Maybe Mazda is more cautious on the American market than on the European market. Maybe they don’t use the full potential of the battery pack in order to avoid costly warranty claims?

      Thanks for watching and commenting. We love to hear from folks around the world. Weigh is a major factor in battery range. But that is a big difference. And maybe the European test standard yields a few more miles than the US EPA test loop. Car manufacturers have to self report range so results are always questionable. Unfortunately we will not get the 60 here in North America which is disappointing. Mazda just rolled out the CX-70, which is just a CX-90 without the 3rd row. Needless to say, folks waiting for a slightly smaller 90 are quite disappointed. Keep in touch when you receive your 60. All the best and happy motoring.

    You can adjust the ‘Auto-Wipers’ sensitivity and response speed 😂
    Also the road manners you had when the truck was turning is admirable these days! Dare I say, rare to see. 😅

We experience this sometimes on all our Mazda car wipers in certain types of rain/snow. But most of the time they are very good. Again thanks for commenting and happy motoring!

    Yes temps affects tne range. At 65 degrees i got 23-24 range at 100% charge.... now at 30 degrees, i get 18 miles range.. looking at the battery status page, depending on the temp, I've gotten 30% battery with 1 miles range to 50% battery with 3 miles range..looking to spring weather to enjoy the warmer temps = full range

    I agree, a bigger battery. This PHEV is a fantastic vehicle, beautiful, great engineering. But the range and hybrid mpg are low. It would be great if Mazda could bump up the range to at least 30 and hybrid mpg to 29, 30. If so, they would sell a ton of these. Maybe the 2025 model.

      Yea, I think those in warmer climates will be happy with the range. Sure hot weather AC use will tax it. But I would imagine this will get better and better. Not bad for Mazda’s first PHEV. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    I'm curious what the MPG will be on the new CX-70 that will be revealed on 1/30/24.

      🤔. Good question. My guess is that it will have 5-8 inches removed from the rear end so it could be a couple hundred pounds lighter with a better drag coefficient. Maybe 1-2 in overall MPGs. But that is a complete guess.

    I would get this over the inline 6 if you plan on keeping it a long time. If what you said is true, the v6 has the timing chain on the back of the engine. Many repairs will require you to lift out the engine.

      Yes I think I would give Mazda a year to get this one better sorted but the 4 cylinder should have decent reliability. The battery is not too big to be expensive. The one wild card is the transmission which is also in the inline. Thanks for watching and happy motoring!

    I'm getting 30 miles on EV only from where I live. The temperature has been around 20 to 30 Celsius. Daily commute on EV only so basically only dip into gas on weekends or night outs. Charging daily at home but wish the charging infrastructure is more convenient as charging stations are still far and few in between even in big city.

      Thanks for watching and sharing your experience. You are the perfect use case and what PHEVs are meant for. Level2 chargers are out there but would only be useful when you are somewhere for an hour or two. And you would need to watch the charging rates which are way more expensive for 30 miles than a gallon of gas. At home charging is reasonable though.     I did not realize the engine actually had such a small load relative to the battery. That seems good for long term longevity.

    lol unusual (at least for me) to see such a void in the engine bay
    I wonder if it messes a bit with the driving dynamics 🤔

      They’ve placed the engine behind the front wheels to assist with better driving dynamics. It handles incredibly well for a 3 row suv!!! :)

      Yea, as mentioned, keeping that weight back is key to how this drives. And although heavier overall than the in-line six due to the larger battery, this may have an even better forward aft weight distribution. Fairly nimble and fun to drive for a big beast.

    Take out the ev part and it’s a decent car, yea just get the inline 6.
