You are awesome ps go check your gmail.
It made me so happy every time he said "alejibre" instead of "alebrije".
And yeah, all I can say is that Pepita is awesome in all senses and I love her!
Fantastic Alibreije and where to find them.
Zen Aku Okami if you travel to state of Oaxaca in Mexico you can found a lot of alebrijes
The crimes of the none spanish speakers
JAJAJAJA 😂😂

"Hey guys, remember when we used to *grow food* ? Yeah, this is better"
😂😂😂😂
You did not offend me. You just made me laugh.... HARD
As a Mexican I can tell you that we are not offended for you trying to enunciate correctly our words
javier prado its actually pretty fun
I know I love listening to foreigners speaking Spanish
alejibres XD
Habla por ti. Digo... A mí tampoco me ofende... Pero habla por ti jaja
javier prado indeed!! Unlike some people in USA
The Alebrijes could be guardians to the afterlife, like how Cerberus (or Fluffy) protected the gateway to the underworld, and the reason people know about them is that when the artist had a fever, he was *close to death,* so that could be the connection right there!
FantasyAddict95 doesn't Cerberus mean spot?
-That is kind of brilliant :D I might use this as an inspiration for a story or something ;)
Alebrijes aren’t considered a creature like that...actually the dog in coco is. In Aztec culture it was believed that the specific breed helped spirits cross from the living to the dead. In Oaxaca we believe the alebrijes is more of a protector to ward off bad spirits.
monsegs2 I think pixar or others could extend the interpretation of the Alebrijes as something to guard against spirits/bad luck to a guardian to protect the spirit world.
The boy doesn't belong in the afterlife just yet, so it's a bad thing that he's there. Pepe has to either drive him out and away from the passage to the afterlife, or make it so he does belong there. He is protecting the spirit world from things that should not be there, and he likely keeps the dead from leaving and harassing the living, so he is protecting villages from bad spirits too. That could be considered relevant to their actual purpose. :)
The problem with that extension is that it is inaccurate to what is believed in Mexico, don’t forget that this is a movie that is using Mexican culture. They have to respect and follow our traditions without “adding” or changing because then it becomes cultural appropriation.
When J's talking about a guy having dreams about strange colorful animals, all I can think about is how he could possibly have a similar situation to Jacob Kowalski in Fantastic Beasts, the time period even matches up! Witches and Wizards do exist!
Pinki Girl holy crap... theory time!!!
BUMP TO THE TOP LET'S MAKE SCB SEE THIS
YOU ARE A GENIUS!
um yes I approve of this theory
Andrea Malacara what you just said makes no sense
Pepita reminds me of the giant jungle saber-tooth cat from "The Croods." Like it could be the kitten before being Pepita!!!
omg amazing :)
Also really looks like the cat spirit thing from el dorado
What if it’s the undead version has omg
This thing is the true macawnivore
Watching you trying to say Oaxaca is so awesome. And appologizing ever 2 minutes. Thank you. I know I am late watching this but it brightened my day. Thank you guys. ❤
That was actually pretty acceptable Spanish. Better than a lot of people I've heard
this girl at the farmers market called jalapeño. juh-loh-pen-o
Alissa K i call them that all the time because it's funny. I love seeing English speakers looking at me like I committed a crime.
Little do they know that I spoke Spanish only for the first 15 years of my life.
I'm a quarter Spanish and I call them Ja-lap-no all the time. People look at me like I'm weird. They were right. But it's still funny to me.
Cupcake Without The Icing when the gringos say pina and not piña
I agree @Cupquake Without The Icing his Spanish wasn't that bad
I'm a native Spanish speaker and i have to admit it was very funny to hear you talking my language. Don't worry, you didn't do it so bad and i don't think Mexico is going to get angry. Also, i love your videos.
Or at least not all of Mexico
4:50 - 5:10 was the best 20 seconds of my life...
Yeah that was birchin'. He totally kicked ash with that one.

P-E-R-F-E-C-T!!!! Viva mi Mexico señores!! 🇲🇽🇲🇽😭
Felicity Chic you night want to also watch the movie The Book of Life (2014). Both feature the day of the dead, but in different ways. Both are lovely movies, and I never understood why some people try to pit them against each other as it is apples and oranges.
Felicity Chic ES BELLA!!!
Felicity Chic di que veva mexico me casa

Ben? Did you mean J
Can you do a video on the Infinity Stones and how they are related?
I saw the winged cat and thought it was one of Elena of Avalor 's Jaquins. " Half-macaw half-jaguar creatures, large wings, fan-shaped tail feathers, tufts of plumage and fur, dark brown nose."- Elena of Avalor Wiki. Both look like Jaguars or leopards, their brightly coloured and the feathers are brightly coloured.
Wotso Videos hi Watson

I don't know why you say that "alebrijes" have lost popularity. In fact, in Mexico City in late October there is an annual Parade of Alebrijes in which nearly 200 enormous figures are wheeled down the streets of downtown. After the parade the alebrijes are put on display along one of the main boulevards until after the Day of the Dead. Because of that, they are sort of becoming associated with the Day of the Dead. But you are right, they originally did not have any connection with the holiday.
MULTICOLORED FLYING TIGER
That’s dope
True like what if you had that thing as a pet
CAN U GUYS DO A BLOOPER COMPILATION PLEASE!!!
Bri _ yo I was the first person her I was here before the video would load up on the channel on newest and it wasn't showing up on the channel while I was whacking the video and so I thought they took it down and I was the only one who saw it I guess I was just *SUPER* early I have never been this early to any video ever!! Clap and a half for everyone who was early as well !!
There are already tons of blooper videos at patreon.com/SuperCarlinBrothers :)

This is so amazing! At least we start to notice that they are not solely based on stereotypes, but in profound search of Mexico's art culture. Loved the video!
lucasmendesf96 A huge AMEN.
She's an alebrije not a monster
Sayuri Pena Did you watch the video? Lol
isn't that the same
Sayuri Pena
Yeah... that’s what the whole video is about...
4:10 dude, I have Hispanic origin, and my parents (from Mexico) are staring at me like I am watching a history video on Mexico by a crazy guy 🤣😂
I found it very funny how you kept interchanging "Alebrije" and "Alejibre" 😂😂
Your Spanish was good btw, not offensive at all; it's really funny seeing you try so hard tho
Rita Bravo same here.
I very much enjoyed this video. Don't worry about your pronunciations, you were pretty much spot on. Also "Pepe" or "Pepito" are short nickname type variations of Jose (Joseph or Joe). So while "Pepita" does translate to pumpkin seed, it is more likely the feminine form of "Pepito", so her real name could be a form or derivitive of "Josefina" (Josephine). Thanks for all your great content and taking the time to read this whole thing. Can't wait for your next video. :)
Victor Pena Buen punto, pero sí es por las pepitas, lo usaron como algo irónico por su gran tamaño.
Silver Beatle ... jajaja ¡que suave! Ahora tengo mas ganas de ver la pelicula
Victor Pena Disfruta! Es un gran tributo a México.
my bet is on Pumpkin seed since 1) shes an animal, we normally named pets names like pumpkin seed rather than a feminine version of a male human. 2) we all know her living world form is a little kitten (she appeared at the last scene with Dante as a kitten), that could well be her name when she was alive. in fact i suspect she was Imeda's cat when she was living, thats why shes guiding imeda now (like how dante is guiding Miguel)
Veronica Oliveiro ... you make a good point. Ive heard it is because of the pumpkin seeds, not a form of josephine. Where i come from though, its actually pretty common for people to give pets people names and give silly nicknanes to people. For example, i had a friend we called flower because his last name is flores. His dogs name was george. Haha so i wasnt ready to rule out that possibility right off the bat. Im looking forward to the movie and hope you enjoy watching it as well.
Pun game is on point today ;D
Hayden Daviau
Hey! I love your videos!
Emma Woah!! Thank you so much!!
The Pun is strong in this one
Today i just had a vivid dream and knowingly knowing i was in a dream everything was extremely clear like 4k resolution. I was flying in the sky and it looked nothing of this world. I saw clouds and tress. When i touched this tree it was fuzzy and very comfortable to touch.then on this large cloud i saw very huge creatures and the first thing that came to mind was this creatures.since i knew i was in a vivid dream i was able to control my actions and so i told my self i don't know if these are from god or the devil so im going to approach them and find out. But as soon as i got really close i snapped out of my dream. I still had the sensation of the fuzzy tree branch on my right hand. By the way i have never believed in this creatures but know I'm not so sure maybe they do exist.
I'm Mexican and it is so funny that you are accidentally offending us. well i think it is hilarious. also go mexican pokemon!
also my mom (who's mexican) doesn't know what are albrejis are. (that's how you spell it)?
Who wants to bet Miquel is the guy you mentioned?
¡Luchadora Pikachu! ¿Pikadora?
Mexico has by far the most distinctive culture I think in all of the America's. I do wonder why that is.
What I think is that they weren't as multi-ethnic as the US was and they also had a much clearer model to draw on in the form of the Aztecs who's empire covers the majority of modern Mexico.
@@silviatrick571* alebrijes and * Miguel.
I'm definitely ready for Coco! It looks great and that tiger-ram-eagle-iguana-glowy monster thing is really cool!
I would call it a Tigrameaguana
OMG the way you said Oaxaca is just so funny when it comes from a none spanish speaker 😂 btw you said alebrije correctly not half bad, hugs from México!
Yagi theRabbit well the first time he said it wasn't half bad but his pronunciation of the word just kinda went downhill from there
yeah it did
Omg. Yassssss. When Jai said Oaxaca, I just yelled "Nooooo. No. No. Just no." #facepalm
Surprised donald trump hasnt built a wall around this comment
Watch Legend Quest!! (Id love to hear someone's perspective that is from this culture)
On the subject of cute names: In it's original ancient Greek, Cerberus, Hades' guard dog, roughly translates to....Spot.
SkywalkerAni for reals?!?!
According to a google search I did, yes. Though I do encourage people to double check and call me out if I'm wrong.
That. Is. Awesome.
Alex Harvard agreed
SkywalkerAni it's awesome
Yes this is a Disney take on the Alebrijes,Even tho it was traced back to one man there is history to the alebrijes like he said there has been versions of alebrijes in the past, and yes, folk lore they ward off bad spirits they do have some meaning to day of the dead,Alebrijes are the spirit guide animals that that most closely resembles that person that has passed or what people think is a good spirit .For example indigenous Mexican folk lore depicts the crow and the raven as mischievous and smart animals,if a person most resembles that animal that’s their spirit guide
I mean he’s not wrong in anything that he said Boi did research
Pokémon has the same name in Spanish and the catchfrace, you know,
Gotta catch em all
Is actually kinda close to the actual one
The actual one is
*”atrápalos ya”* or in English
*”catch em now”* just search Pokémon theme Spanish and have a listen
Also I’m from Costa Rica 🇨🇷 not from Mexico 🇲🇽

I'm Mexican, I think the whole idea of the Coco movie is amazing. And so are you for doing research about our History and Traditions. "Sorry Mexico"? Not at all, Thank you! And the Bolsillomon thing? Just perfect!
I'm most looking forward to the music, definitely. Also, I think the best combination of animals would be a tiger, wolf, and maybe a python.. somehow
I'd call it a Pythgerwolf.
OH MY GODS THAT WOULD BE AN AWESOME THING TO DRAW
Permission to draw it? If you want I could send a link~
Leah Dell'Osso Great name! Better than I was thinking of calling it. Pyigerolf?
LialaOkami YES! Please do! I would love love love to see that!
Alright! It'll probably take a while, but I am literally pulling out my drawing tablet as I type this, so I am _on it!_
Aww I feel so beloved! I'm sure other Mexican viewers felt that too. I also loved correcting him from time to time 😂.
Another thing that could be possible about the alebrijes in Coco is that since they act as spirit guides in The Land of the Dead, they could also be called psychopomps. They're basically spirits that guide souls to the afterlife and can take on any form
The guy who created alejibres was probably so sick that he could have died and came back to life. The alejibres could have been protecting him while he was sick, followed him into the afterlife to make sure he crossed over safely, and would ward away evil spirits. That might also explain why everyone else had alejibres except the people who were being forgotten. Maybe being forgotten was their final resting place and was actually them reaching "The other side" and not in limbo. The alejibres stick around until then. The man could have witnessed a glimpse all the different 'animals' before he was revived. Thus bringing back with him the images, and Disney using them in association with El Dia de Los Muertos.
When J whips out all the Dad jokes to prepare for his future child
Ashley Creswick He's gonna be THAT dad.. I love it
Actually, it seems that Pepita is specifically assembled out of three animals with symbolic value in south america.
I do not know if it's a thing in mexico, but in Peru I was told that there are 3 realms on earth:
*The sky realm* , represented by a *condor* (which is the largest bird that can fly, and is common in specific areas in Peru)
*The ground (or the middle) realm* - represented by a *puma* in the mountains, or a *jaguar* in the jungles
and *the underworld* - represented by a *snake* (mostly annaconda) or an *iguana* .
All these animals are considered sacred and very spiritual in the Peruvian cוlture.
I hope I got it right, I'm not an expert in the subject :)
Wow that’s so interesting, I’m from Mexico and I’ve never listened about that
Thant's interesting, I had no idea about that, but those were things very important for Mexican cultures too, like the Aztecs for example, they had ofrendas whit animals that represented the same (sky, ground and underworld)
Noya Glass it makes sense since Peru and Mexico shared the Incas culture .
noup, no condors in Mexico, just eagles
Ram's horns?🐆🐏🦅🦎🐍
As a mexican, I absolutely died at J's spanish pronunciation. ( ; w ; ) www
Mary Chinami he actually wasn't that bad
Twenty Paphonie He wasn't bad at all, yes! I meant I loves it. nvn
I just saw the movie recently, and boy was he wrong.
Collier Hahn or as Luke said
“Amazing... everything you just said.... was wrong” (or something like that I forgot the exact phrase)
I'm from Mexico and I loved this! Thank you! Also, pleeeaase go watch the movie, the trailers DON'T do it justice....at all! It's so heartwarming and precious, just so beautiful!!!
I am triggered you pronounce a Spanish name in an Italian accent of a Japanese franchise.
I am french. Therefore yes of course this must offend me.

Hello!!!
I’m from Mexico and I really really like how you speak Spanish! Love the Coco movie and the good representation of my culture and the feelings we have in Día de los muertos.
I love Pepita. She's a giant cat. She glows. SHE FLIES. SHE IS PERFECTION
Also, at CTN 2017, Pixar hosted a panel in which we got to see sneak preivews of Coco, they showed us behind-the-scenes stuff and they explained why they decided to add Alebrije to the film and make them "Spirit Guides". And in the end it works pretty well!

Make a Harry Potter video on this topic: If a wizard/witch transferred blood to a muggle, would the muggle become magical?
Dale Curran / / MajesticBagelz Sounds neato! :O
For your theory to work, that would mean magic comes from the bone marrow of a wizard, since the bone marrow produces the blood cells. So if a muggle got a marrow transplant from a wizard... they could become a wizard? Magical transplants sound dope. How many of us muggles would be signed up on that transplant list? Hint: The answer is EVERYONE.
Pretty sure when they say "half blood/etc" they're not talking about LITERAL blood. I'm pretty certain that magic is based on a gene, and not blood. Which would mean that NO, a transfer would not transfer magical ability.
You mean like a Tokyo Ghoul situation?
okay.. so can gene therapy make me a wizard then?
Thanks for making this! :D It was incredibly helpful! Those fever dreams sound so cool!
As an Hispanic I hate how people make fun of his Spanish or making a comment on how he pronounces everything. Get a grip he is trying his hardest and feels so bad that messes up and tries to correct and feels embarrassed. Good for him for trying that's really what matters.
Looks like the Jaquins for Disney Jr's Elena of Avalor
omg it DOES!!!
It does! commented that just then before I read yours

Actually, they are a common "alebrije" to find . And actually Im not entirely sure if it's actually an alebrije since it may be another mythical prehispanic creature...
I have one right here on the cover of one of my books about mexican mythology so ...
You can check it out, its called Mitología Mexicana by Roldán Peniche B.
Maybe you find the cover!
Yes, Pepita It's an Alebrije. The movie was premiered in October 27 in México and Director Lee Unkrich explained that although alebrijes have nothing to do with the celebration of the faithful departed, they wanted to put that tradition on the movie.
Ye that is what I thought
Well pronunciation ... saludos from Shaked Mexico City
However you just say two times Alebrijes wrong. You said alejibres 😂
It reminded me of when I tried to say cinnamon and I said cimannon instead.

I watched this during my Spanish lesson at school and when my teacher was telling us about alebrije
I LOVED THE PUNS I WANT A VIDEO OF YOU JUST DOING PUNS

Alebrijes are the kinds of things for which I wish I had know the word for years.
I actually thought that Pepita looks an awful lot like the Jaquins from 'Elena of Avalor' though possibly the jaquins and all the creatures seen in the Realm of the Jaquins are based on Alebrije as well?
I'm Hispanic and this brings me physical pain and joy at the same time
"Can you imagine if one such person used to be a professor, but now taught people how to carve Alebrijes out of oak? What would they be called then?"

I know you said in the video that Alebrijes are spiritual guides (wich is right) but it kinda boders me that you put it in the tittle as "Monster"
Is not a monster, yeah is a mix of diferent animals but is not a monster.
ItsPao Ochoa Agreed
ItsPao Ochoa And they are also representations
ItsPao Ochoa bro me too
I came here to protest at Pepita being called a monster, but watching the video, you won me over. Just one thing, México isn't the only country that speaks Spanish and the culture shown in coco is not just Mexican. México has a wonderful culture that is shared and has feedback from all the cultures in latin/South America just like other cultures get feedback from Mexican cultures. I love coco and love your videos
All the Poképuns!!
I also have theory what if coco is the man that has fever dreams and this is where he gets his information from hmmmmmm
xXGamer519Xx You know coco is just the spanish name for boogieman (apart of coconut), don't you?
Coco is a nickname too for the woman's name socorro. "Mama coco" is the kid's Grandma. Nothing to do with the coco monster
Soooooo I’m wrong?
I was literally drawing Pepita last night. Am I the only one who is going to make fan art for Coco? I feel alone in this.
Edit: also good video Supercarlin-friend. You explained why when I searched Pepita, it came up as pumpkin seeds.

I’m gonna make fan art too haha

6:21 They're in the movie because the alebrijes are also known as guides in the spiritual world for those have already died. Love your channel! Greetings from Mexico.
I´m from Mexico and I need to write this: Nice job, very hilarious. Keep it up, mate. :-}
Great video J! It was very funny and interesting👍.
Dayum that's a cute name!
I think imma call whatever pet I adopt next Pepita!
CatC you shouldn't. Not only does it translate as what he said and could be the diminutive of the feminine shortened version of Jose (Pepe). Mexicans LOVE their sexual innuendos and this is pretty close and likely derived from the to word pepa, which Mexican slang for vagina, or pito which is slang for penis.
NotyourL'Hôpital Zero oh shit thanks my dude
CatC I'm a gal but either way, no problemo!!

The puns were starting to get a little old but then that face you pulled at 'roots' saved it.
Reading about the Mayan Culture and looking at Pepita, she is the mixture between three animals mentioned most in the Mayan culture. Those three are the Leopard, Macaw, and Feathered Serpent/Dragon.
