    Honestly, I don't think Ernesto is passionate about playing his music. He's passionate about being famous; that's what keeps him going. When Hector was going to leave, Ernesto had a feeling of "if he leaves I can't be famous!" and did what he deemed was necessary to make sure no one could stop him from getting famous.
    Ernesto is a brilliant actor. Example: when Ernesto and Hector are walking to the train station, he removes the guitar as if to help lighten the amount Hector was carrying. Instead, he took the guitar so he could steal it.

    I always wondered why Ernesto just didn’t ask his friend to write songs for him mailed them to where he was and gave him a cut of the money for a thanks🤔? Hector could have just been a ghost writer, he could have wrote songs for hiss family but still wrote then for Cruz as a ghost writer, meaning he would get no credit but he wasn't getting credit anyway. Most songwriters that are ghost writers are fine with no credit as long as they get a cut of the profits, with the way Cruz became popular Hector would be getting high ammounts in royalty, and he would get to stay with his family. So basicslly, if the two had just worked it out, Cruz would still be famous and not a murderer that is disgraced (as we see at the end) HEctor gets rich and lives with his family, Maybe the wife will make a shoe business and the family could chose between making shoes or being songwriters, idk. But it sounds like that would be a way better siduation for them both. Miguel would also be encouraged to study music and Coco would have her father.

    From a psychologist's point of view: Ernesto wants love/positive attention; from a small town in the middle of nowhere, with Hector as a best friend - a man who won his love's heart and makes his child laugh, a man with so much love in his life, and he got it from music. So smooth Ernesto decides to copy him. Beliefs from that age never disappear, they only get cemented. the real question is what his childhood life was like,was he an orphan or neglected, does he even have ancestors to remember? In a city where remembering your ancestors or being forgotten is the worst case scenario, having no one and being no one can be horrifyingly traumatic.
    Pps: everything Ernesto says as the Hero of Music is an act. What he thinks people want to hear, a story he tells to himself and others. It's not real. In film or protagonist - we are all spectators of Ernesto’s greatest fear.

      Honestly I think he is a lot like Ted Bundy. Like you said, everything was an act, he was super charismatic, the only time we saw his act pulled down was when he threw Miguel off the building, even after that the act went right back up. When he had the guards take Miguel away the act was there, I don't think the guards realized that Miguel was going to die from that. The more I think about Ernesto's life (how quickly he decided to kill Miguel when Miguel couldn't have actually harmed his reputation, how premeditated killing Hector was), the more creeped out I get. I think he was a serial killer, he just killed anyone that could possibly pose a threat to his career. He's a psycho.

    The only answer for this is simple. It's a combination of jealousy and greed. Hector had a loving family and an amazing talent for music. He knew that without Hector he would lose his dream and his fame. Yes he had talent but not at the level as Hector. If he couldn't keep Hector and his songs with him on the tour then he would have nothing, so he killed Hector and took his music for himself

    No, he never showed remorse. Over the course of the film, he shows narcissists tendencies. One could go so far as to say he's a psychopath. The fact he murdered his best friend and was angry that Hector wanted to return home. This makes him a covert narcissists, he's all about appearances. Meeting Hector in the land of dead was his opportunity to address what he did and say what he did. It was MIGUEL that pointed it out and the LOOK on Ernesto's face tells us everything. The fact that Miguel knew the truth and "unmasked" him was enough of a threat to his persona and image. He had his security lock Miguel away knowing fully that keeping him in the land of dead past sunrise would keep the boy dead. Thus, no one would "find out" the truth. Once Miguel returned to the living, EVERYTHING was found out and Hector was reunited with his family.

    • @sarcasticsuperjerk18
      @sarcasticsuperjerk18 6 лет назад +38

      In fact, Ernesto can be considered a psychopath. He shows every trait of one. First, there is the lack of emotion Ernesto feels for killing Hector and when Miguel asks Ernesto about his family. Then there is his obvious charming and romantic personality to keep people from being suspicious of it. He is a very seductive person with this charm. He's even a narcissist and focuses on one person for some time, like the girl he danced with in his last song before he died, Miguel, and Hector when he throws an outburst at him. Hell, he even tries to act nice in order to cover this up.

    • @alexisgarcia1344
      @alexisgarcia1344 6 лет назад +28

      A narcissist can be a both a sociopath and/or a psychopath. The difference is the degree in which the "mask" comes off. For example, Mother Gothel in Tangled is an overt narcissists. She doesn't hide her disgust or disdain toward Rampuzel. Ernesto on the other hand is SO concerned with his physical appearance and his reputation, he'll do ANYTHING to preserve this image. The thought of family, for him, challenged what he wanted. I will have to give Ernesto SOME credit because he didn't involve other people, like a wife and children into his plan. However, his death made that nearly impossible. What's to say had he lived, would he have married and had children to terrorize? That's not this story but more then likely, he would have done that, to keep up the appearance of a loving father and family.

    • @Goldenthrush
      @Goldenthrush 6 лет назад +24

      Definitely. When asked if he regretted, he just says it was hard to leave his home. He doesn't mention family, friends, anything. It's simply what he was expected to say, because a person like Ernesto could not get out of that small town fast enough. I think that he had intended to murder Hector from the moment that Hector married Imelda.
      To Ernesto, Hector was betraying him, betraying his dream. Hector was his best and possibly only friend, and he failed to be his eternal sidekick and songwriter. I mean, really, they're traveling on the road, and he just happened to have poison? I'm sure he was thinking he'd give Hector that last chance to walk away from his wife and daughter, but knew Hector wouldn't walk away.
      Ernesto also sort of absorbed Hector into him, so to speak, by taking his guitar and songs and then never speaking another word of him. The more I think about it, the creepier he gets.

    • @alexisgarcia1344
      @alexisgarcia1344 6 лет назад +10

      Goldenthrush, WOW!! Yeah, there's that "I'll take what I like from Ernesto and leave the rest." That is very typical of narcissists. You pointed out that he had been planning it for awhile, which you're right, THAT is scary. The other scene that's even MORE scary, he tells Miguel "Ernesto was my best friend!" Miguel physically cringes. Even after everything is disclosed, Miguel is scared to ask him for his blessing. It also made it difficult for Miguel to know this guy is a fraud because his family NEVER talked about Ernesto. I think that's what the film makers were trying to point out. In an attempt to erase Ernesto, they GAVE power to De La Cruz, taking full advantage of that opportunity. Which makes it even worse. He's a real piece of work.

    I think that Earnesto did regret that he killed his friend, the movie shows the person being poisoned spitting out the drink and attacking the poisoner so maybe deep down he wished Hector noticed the poison.
    You can also see signs of his humanity shining through when the security is dragging him out and he tells them not too hurt him. However, in the end his greed and his love of the fame and glory were greater then his guilt and his compassion for friends and family which is why he left his friends and family at home, murdered Hector and even in the land of the dead with a final chance for redemption tried to silence Miguel.
    In a way seeing his humanity peeking through makes Earnesto an even eviler character. He knows what he’s doing is wrong, he knows he is hurting those around him but keeps on going anyways.

      Seeing as how quickly he snatched and then was reluctant to give the photo of Hector back, even if it was just so he could at least have the opportunity to see his daughter one last time before he died again, I don’t think he felt guilt. If he did he wouldn’t have tried to recreate the scenario by trying to kill his own Grandson (he tried to kill Miguel twice actually!).
      As much as I wish Ernesto did show himself doubting his actions a little, he really doesn’t. Even after his betrayal came to the surface he still continued to call Hector “friend”, which was a lot more chilling than I had expected it to be. But the scene of him drinking the poisoned drink in El Camino A Casa was definitely a wreckless move. I’m thinking it was added in that way to sort of romanticize the memory and justify his own actions by placing himself as the hero in that situation. You know, put himself in the good guy’s shoes so he could both believe and appear to the world that he was.
      Lol sorry this is so wordy, it’s just really fun analyzing characters. For me at least, I usually think it’s the villains without a hint of humanity who appear like they are the most frightening to me because that means nothing can hold them back. They’ll twist good and pure things into something monstrous and menacing. Like, just Ernesto calling Hector his friend throughout his entire appearance even until the end still kinda haunts me

    • @christianali5431
      @christianali5431 4 года назад +12

      The truth may be even scarier than that. He directed a part of one of his movies to have it that two friends drink a toast together, only for one of the glasses to be poisoned, and the hero of the story to survive the situation, solve the mystery, and beat the bad guy. This, in effect means that if and when anybody found out what he did to Hector, and they tried to tell somebody about this matter, anyone and everyone they told would simply shrugged his shoulders and say “si,si. I saw that movie too. It is just a movie though. It’s not real life.“

    I think that more than just the music, Ernesto was in love with the image he had created for himself as a singer/song writer. In the afterlife, Hector accuses Ernesto of stealing his songs, and it's not until Coco's letters from her father are found that Hector gets credit for writing them. I think Ernesto killed Hector to ensure no one ever learned the truth. That while he could play great music, he couldn't create it like everyone thought.

    I'm pretty late to the game but there are a few things that really made me think while watching the movie. One thing would be that Ernesto must've planned on killing Hector sooner or later, because why else would he have poison standing around like that? My guess is that if Hector didn't leave and Ernesto became famous, he would kill him at this point so nobody will ever know that the songs aren't Ernesto's.
    Also why is Hector only wearing rags in the world of the dead? He was wearing pretty fancy clothes when he was killed, so I think Ernesto either stole Hector's clothes and hid them somewhere or he changed his clothes so Hector's dead body would look like the one of a tramp in case somebody finds him.
    And the last thing is about the question wether or not Ernesto felt bad about what he did..... my theory is that he didn't, never. If Hector really was his best friend he probably knew about Coco's and Hector's secret song and what it meant to Hector. So stealing even *that* song (remember me) after killing his best friend, knowing that Hector wrote that song only for his daughter, whom he never will see again, is pretty messed up. And after running out of songs to sing Ernesto started producing movies. Movies about how he wants to be potrayed (like the good guy, a hero). So the murder of his best friend was only a convenient story he could use for one of these movies. If that shows anything, it's how manipulative, uncreative and heartless Ernesto is.

He wanted the fame and reputation and wanted to play for a much bigger crowd of people like in the movie where he had a spectacular. So yes, Ernesto killed Hector because he needed his songs to get to where he was at in the movie. Popularity gotten into his head, I believe he used to have a bit of humanity once in him before everything went down with him murdering Hector and all. Good theory btw

    I feel based on your description of Hector as well as my own interpretation of the film, he did sort of recognize his fault in the matter, but justified it in his head in really, REALLY out-there ways. The stuff you said in about the scene in the movie was particularly interesting, why DID Ernesto have a scene which is so personal written, acted, shot, edited, and presumably distributed to a wide audience without thinking "hey, this is kind of f***ed up?" That is so sick on so many levels! Great villain, though, it's like if Gilderoy Lockhart was taken to the logical next step.

    I think that both of them have musical talent.
    Ernesto could only mimic emotions since he's a sociopath/psychopath. At best his ability to not just feel, but express those emotions are limited. He knew how to make others happy.
    Hector could not only feel, but express those feelings in the notes and words chosen.
    The two different renditions of the songs, Remember Me, shows this difference quite well.

      The way that he sang Remember Me is what made it popular. Hector's version is much more heartfelt, but wouldn't have been mainstream. I like to compare Ernesto to Ted Bundy, who was super charismatic and the people that knew him could not comprehend that he would kill. Child molesters are another good example, they are often some of the people that parents trust most which is why the victims don't feel they can talk about it, they think no one will believe them. I think Ernesto actually had the capacity to act out those feelings he didn't have so well that everyone trusted him completely. And I don't think Hector was the only person he killed.

    The thing that gets me, which I didn't realize till after I the movie was over, is that Ernesto had clearly been planning to murder Hector for a while, since he had the poison already on him and ready to go. I bet Ernesto had been suspecting for a while that Hector was going to bail on him. But instead of talking to him and trying to work something out where Hector could write songs from home, he's like, "Nope. Gotta kill him. There's no other way." Like... geez dude. And Hector had a wife and baby girl too!
    It makes you wonder what Ernesto & Hector's friendship was really like all those years. I imagine it was always pretty toxic, and Ernesto was very used to being able to manipulate Hector and get what he wanted out of him. So when Hector finally put his foot down, Ernesto couldn't deal with it. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if there was some jealousy there too. Hector tells Miguel in the movie that he taught Ernesto everything he knows about music, so obviously Hector was always more musically talented than Ernesto. I bet Ernesto was kinda bitter about that for a long time, and it finally just reached a breaking point. But Ernesto is really good at putting on a happy face and hiding his darker feelings, so Hector never suspected there was anything wrong.

    My theory is that ernesto's family probably didn't thought that being a musician was gonna be a great career for him. And that probably must've made ernesto feel betrayed and left his family so he could reach his dream. And of course, he did everything he could to get that fame, including to kill his best friend. Hector was the one who felt bad for leaving his own family, but ernesto didn't care about what hector felt because he doesn't believe in the love and bond of family because of his own family rejecting his dream of being a musician. And there's also the song "the world is my familia". Like think about it, if ernesto never got the love and support of his family, then he prefers the love and support from his fans, because he doesn't believe in the love of real families. Idk, its just my theory.

    Hector and Ernesto. The tragic friendship between a Hufflepuff and Slytherin. Ernesto’s downfall was his ambition, he wanted the fame and glory. He wanted to be remembered as one of the greatest musicians of all time. Ernesto was the type who would do anything to “seize his moment”, and anyone who came in between him and his reputation was a threat.
    Based on Hector’s description of playing for the world, I don’t think he cared much for it. Hector loved music and had a natural gift for it, but he wasn’t the type to seek out glory. His downfall was unfortunately his loyalty. Ernesto probably was the one who kept pushing Hector, begging him to join him on this tour. I wouldn’t be surprised if Ernesto brought up that with fame, came riches and opportunities that Hector could provide for his family. And with Hector’s devotion not only to his friend, but to his wife and child as well, it’s no wonder he’d leave on the tour for their sake.
    The tragedy was when their two greatest qualities conflicted with one another, and Hector and his family were the ones left suffering.

      I'd sort Ernesto into Gryffindor rather than Slytherin. Ernesto was a bombastic show-off who killed his best friend for his shot at glory. Slytherins can be vicious and cruel--but they ALWAYS look after their own. Loyalty to your in-group is a Slytherin trait. Ernesto didn't have that. He was Peter Pettigrew.

      When you watch the movie again, go to 1:05:24-1:05:54. When you watch that scene, look at Ernesto the whole time. He looks at the photo for a pretty long time. His expression when Hèctor is talking to him about the past are showing that he is conflicted with a helping his childhood friend from being completely forgotten. But, if he helps Hèctor, he thinks it will ruin his status of fame. He is truly stuck as his eyes show it, he is looks at the photo with little remorse, and he's sighing that he is trying to find a way to help Hèctor. I truly think he does regret for murdering his best friend. When Hèctor tried to get Miguel to put his photo up on a ofrenda, Ernesto realized that Hèctor is close to his final death and he thinks that murdering him was the cause of it. Like Isaac said, Ernesto didn't end Hèctor life maliciously, he kill him for Hèctor's songs and guitar(without thinking about the destruction of Hèctor). He knew that deep down it was wrong and regrets to see his friend about to be forgotten.

      How was Hector supposed to know that the liquor was poisoned? Ernesto had been his best friend since they were kids. He knew Ernesto. He trusted him. They were practically brothers. Even with such a big argument, Hector had no reason to think that Ernesto would hurt him. That's probably part of why he reacted so violently when he learned the truth.

  • @OMartinez91

    I really loved this. The plot twist and reasoning just feels sonmuch like something from Mexico's Golden Age of cinema, which is what Ernesto's movies are a homage to since a lot of artists from that era also made movies as well, where they featured their songs, either creating a songtrack for them, or basing the movies on them.
    That being said, from my knowledge of what I know from that type of cinema, if this is directly inspired by these movies, Ernesto's motivations just seem egotistical. He was willing to share the spotlight with Hector because Hector was going to be his ticket to fame, but since Hector was going to leave him, he saw it as betrayal, so he poisoned him, and tricked Hector into thinking his stomach pain was due to bad chorizo, that way Hector would not go to the doctor and get an antidote on time. That last part is what makes me think Ernesto thought Hector betrayed him, or at least betray him later, as Hector is also a talented artist himself who was also an excellent songwriter, and if he was to be on his own, Hector could easily overshadow Ernesto. He claims he could never hate him, but I believe that is a lie

She spoiled the whole movie for herself by the time competition started down to the fact the Hector was actually Miguel's great great grandfather.

    If Ernesto regretted what he did, he wouldn't have acted as malicious as he did in the movie. Sure he would've felt uneasy talking about it talk less about revealing what he did, but he showed no regret at all. Even when Hector at the end only wanted to be remembered by his daughter n didn't even care about the fame, Ernesto still wouldn't give him that and he tried to murder Miguel, his great-grandson as well. So as much as his passion might've been real and genuine, the moment he killed Hector he became truly evil.

    Am I the only one that genuinely thinks Ernesto could, to a degree, be a psychopath? He's got the charm, the inflated sense of self worth, he's a good enough liar to fool lots of people, he's manipulative, I really don't think his guilt or remorse for Hector was as fake as his career. Why I say I think he didn't feel guilt is he got Miguel taken off, even when fully under the belief Miguel was his great-great-grandson. He quickly turned sour when Miguel found out the truth, and used a line Miguel took seriously as motivation (seize your moment), he refuses to take responsibility from my personal view, and he's a criminal. He tried to kill a 12 year old for getting in his way and did so without much remorse. If you've seen Infinity War, you'll get what I mean with this sentence, even Mantis said "He mourns!" after Thanos did a very similar thing, but Ernesto only cared when he realized it was broadcasted and even then, it was caring about how HE looked, not how Miguel was.

  • @AishaVonFossen
    @AishaVonFossen 6 лет назад +25

    I just saw Coco a few days ago, and yes, I am in love with this movie. :)
    I think I can understand wanting a dream so badly that you feel at times you'll fight tooth and nail to get it. I am a writer, and one day I want to be a bestselling novelist, and when I was younger, that dream was almost killed multiple times by my dad, but in the end, that only made the dream stronger. :)
    However, holy hell, Ernesto, if you wanted to keep a part of Hector alive, you wouldn't have killed him! There are good and bad things to be said for wanting to do anything to make your dream a reality. And yes, the human mind can be so twisted as to rationalize any deed, good or bad, to achieve your goals. And I can agree that Ernesto did believe he knew what he did was wrong, but I don't think he felt any remorse for it, especially since he was exactly the same in the Land of the Dead, if not worse. He knew that was what he felt he needed to do to achieve his dream. While he may see himself as a villain of some kind, I think he was even more his own hero, since no one really sees him/herself as being bad. I'm always reminded of Palpatine's attitude in Revenge of the Sith, when he started swaying Anakin over to the dark side. Anakin tried to make the argument that the Jedi are a force for good, but Palpatine said they were only good from their point of view, which means the other side, the Sith, and other wrongdoers, see themselves as in the right. Whether Ernesto knew he was wrong or not, he still did what he did feeling completely justified within himself.
    In the case of Ernesto, I think we've all seen this kind of psychopathic behavior before, whether we've met these kinds of people or not. Psychopaths or sociopaths are excellent liars and manipulators, and they will say or do anything to look the ways you want them to look if that means it will move them forward in their ulterior motives. So when Ernesto gave Hector all those compliments ("I would move heaven and earth for you" I think was definitely him being cocky and saying he could get away with anything, because yeah, for a long time, in this world and the next, he kinda did), those were all just things he knew Hector and others would have liked to hear from him.
    And, despite all this, though, I'm gonna come out and say this right now, Ernesto is charming as hell. I mean, OMG he's hot! LOL But actually, that's what makes him all the more dangerous. It's often really attractive people who possess Ernesto's traits that are the most alluring and believable. Then when they're exposed, it can be heartbreaking to see that someone who seemed so charming and beautiful could turn out to be so awful, like they were just too good to be true. I kinda got that vibe as I watched how nice Ernesto was pretending to be when he met Miguel, he was too nice to him and so quickly, I thought, what's your angle? Besides, at that point, we had so much more of the movie to go and I knew we had to get to know more of Hector, so naturally something was amiss. XD
    Anyway, my two cents on this guy. Great video! :D

    I think Ernesto probably did regret killing Hector. For one, they were best friends. And secondly, Hector was the genius songwriter behind De La Cruz's hit music. Ernesto didn't have the talent to write new original songs after Hector's death, and so, he couldn't have continued his success on the handful of songs Hector wrote in his lifetime.

    I admit Ernesto is a passionate musician but his heart was more reliant on Hector's lyrics. If Ernesto tried creating his own lyrics he would've been as successful as his voice (or maybe he's more into the fame and fortune than creating music himself).
    👍I think, just as you said in your theory, a part of Ernesto de la Cruz did regret for a split moment. But he wanted the world to know him as the greatest musician ever amd without Hector's songs he became desperate. He didn't want people to forget him as a one hit wonder; Ernesto de la Cruz wanted to become a legend.

      He may have the singing talent as a musician, but not the heart and soul of a true musician. He would have known that being a true artist means writing your own songs and finding your own inspiration instead of gaining fame and fortune the dishonest way. A true legendary figure does not rely on fame and popularity, but on what they stand for in knowing what life is really all about.

    I think that Ernesto’s “The music isn’t just in me; it IS me” wasn’t so much his own identity as he wanted other people to see him as a creative genius. I also think the reason why he put the murder he committed into one of his movies (but with himself as the hero) is the same reason he needed Hector to write songs for him: while Ernesto is a great performer, he’s actually not that good at coming up with original ideas. I agree that Ernesto probably didn’t have much of a connection to any family he had in Santa Cecilia. In fact, if he grew up in an emotionally neglectful family, that would explain why he went to such extreme lengths to get fame: if he couldn’t get validation from his own family, he would get it from being admired by the world. But I doubt that he regretted anything he did - at least not while he was still enjoying the perks of the fame that he literally killed for - because if he had, it probably wouldn’t have been so easy for him to attempt to kill Miguel. If it was really Ernesto’s intent to keep a part of Hector alive by singing his songs, I think he would’ve given Hector the credit he was due. Also, being able to rationalize malicious actions doesn’t make them not malicious. Lastly, fun little Coco Easter egg: the town of Santa Cecilia is named after Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music and musicians.
