It's always amazed me that great songwriters can simply come up with a song. They had an idea for a movie. They needed a song. It had to be a catchy song or the whole movie would fall flat. To say they succeeded would be an understatement. It is a perfect song with so much likeability that it instantly grabbed the audience, has continued to grab audiences, and I expect will grab audiences for decades to come. It has everything one would expect in a "hit." It certainly didn't hurt that the movie was so well done.
I'm sitting here, a bucket of tears, as I always am watching this scene, except this time I didn't get the climactic release of hearing the last line, "I AM SPARTACUS!!". Come on, MovieClips.. just another 15 seconds!!! I'm Almost There!!!
What a great scene, in a movie filled with them. Liv and Ethan's opening (as he just enlisted). The stunned sister at 1.24, with the un-noticed car screeching to a halt behind her. And her icy reaction to needy Steve - who grabs the display. That sexy old Buick...
This joyous scene completely captures the euphoria of making it to the No. 1 in the charts at a time when getting that slot actually MEANT something. Pure magic.
Thnx for the tip, dude... small things that you sometimes miss can actually add to the movie- in this case her acting, brief though it was, clearly conveyed a real emotion just using her face & eyes- SOLID acting!!
I read an interview where Steve Zahn (who played Lenny) said that when they filmed the part where they start skipping in a circle at around 1:59, he felt that it would look stupid. However, when he watched the finished movie, he realized that it was perfect; it captured the right sense of joy. And I agree with him.
I wasn't around until 1978, but as someone whos worked in TV and radio since the 90s, I can appreciate the radio and TV broadcasting pioneers that also made great moments like these possible. Gives me chills. I've directed TV productions of live, mostly local music and I can say the euphoria runs both ways... it hits us as it does the audience! The increased bass when the big radio is turned on, the transformers sending out the signal....all of that. The TV scene in the movie reminds me of how it's done today and where it got its start!
The thrill and joy in this scene is absolutely incredible to watch. Kind of like in the original Willy Wonka movie when Charlie slowly opens the candy bar, and then sees that glimmering corner of the golden ticket. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
Agreed. I only watched the movie after hearing the song on MTV (yeah, back in 1996 when they still showed music videos). Great movie, great soundtrack!
had the sudden inkling to watch this scene waiting for the train yesterday. then i remembered...oh WAIT, this is the scene that always makes me cry. too late. i was near bawling right as i got on the G train. no regrets. the oneders forever.
I've watched this movie 4 times, and only now I noticed that the band member that left to go in the armed forces was seen coming out of an Army-Navy store.
I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky in the 60's, and we LOVED our hometown bands. Their 45's frequently went to #1 on the local charts. Most of them were never played outside of our area, but we were fiercely loyal. This scene brings that time back to me so vividly.

From Mark Lewisohn's book on The Beatles: "George Harrison would say 30 years later 'First hearing Love Me Do on the radio sent me shivery all over. It was the best buzz of all time'"
Maybe the single best movie scene EVER. Yes!!!!
Every time I watch this scene my heart burst with joy, sound design is top notch!
0:50 I love how the bassist is so excited he slips, definitely think that was unscripted
His name is Tobias
He actually wiped his feet...loved it
@@mon796 He slipped, THEN he wiped his feet. Neither of which were scripted.
I’m in a band myself and I still dream of this day regardless of wether it happens or not - it’s amazing to watch this for me 😎🙌🎶🎆💟
is it possible to listen to your songs somewhere? :)
@@Marta-wl6su sorry for late reply! X just seen this = if u search our band Stepping Lane on all social media platforms we have some of our original songs on there! X thank you 😃🎶🎶
@@robsol123 Cool! I'd love to play your music in my radio show. It's just a local radio station in Poland but if that'd make you happy, I'm interested! I messaged you on instagram.
I love how Guy's father was getting aggravated at the music being played, yet his mother tuned her radio to the song and was boppin' to the music.
There is a specific group of people that cries watching this and the scene where Jenny screams "Forrest" at the middle of his speech because you can FEEL IT.
The moment you realize that theyre so happy no one realizes the bass player is in a military recruit uniform
"it comes in Beige, Classic white, Avocado" lol, love the store display, spot on, for the time, with the electronics, TV's etc RCA,Philco, Magnavox,Zenith ,
This is the happiest feeling ever. I've experienced hearing myself on the radio like this. Just unreal euphoria. This is so well directed! My fav scene except when she realizes she wasted all those kisses....
BRILLIANT & JOYFUL! AWESOME SCENE! CAST PLAY IT PERFECTLY!
Mom's in the back groovin' @ 2:04 Lol!. I love that part. It was fun to witness Faye's and the band's excitement. Such a great feel good movie.
I'm sitting here, a bucket of tears, as I always am watching this scene, except this time I didn't get the climactic release of hearing the last line, "I AM SPARTACUS!!".
Come on, MovieClips.. just another 15 seconds!!! I'm Almost There!!!
...yeah! What he said, MovieClips! So close to perfect!
Stopped it too early! The end, where the drummer looks up and screams, "I am Spartacus"! is classic.
I still love how at the beginning the guy on the radio still says it like the "oh-nee-ders"
This is how music ought to be. What a great scene from a great little movie.
One of the best movie scenes. Ever.
Love The Bass Player wiping off his shoes before running into the store at 0:50
What a great scene, in a movie filled with them. Liv and Ethan's opening (as he just enlisted). The stunned sister at 1.24, with the un-noticed car screeching to a halt behind her. And her icy reaction to needy Steve - who grabs the display. That sexy old Buick...
Icy reaction? You missed the whole scene, she wants to be the one kissed and she pops the towel in disgust when she misses her chance.
Love this! It makes me remember a time when something could make you feel pure joy!
Their excitement is the cutest thing 🥰🥰🥰
This seriously gets me teared up every time. Such a great scene
Liv Tyler in those Mary Tyler Moore 60’s Capri pants....OHHHH MY!!!!
I am Spartacus...
Shades! 😁🤘🏼
This movie is an absolute JOY to watch.
Len and that cardboard cutout, man… The guy is nuts.
This joyous scene completely captures the euphoria of making it to the No. 1 in the charts at a time when getting that slot actually MEANT something. Pure magic.
1:53 - She really wanted that kiss actually, I can tell, lol. ;)
id want to kiss Lenny!
Lenny is single, you know.
Thnx for the tip, dude... small things that you sometimes miss can actually add to the movie- in this case her acting, brief though it was, clearly conveyed a real emotion just using her face & eyes- SOLID acting!!
This clip is pure magic.
I read an interview where Steve Zahn (who played Lenny) said that when they filmed the part where they start skipping in a circle at around 1:59, he felt that it would look stupid. However, when he watched the finished movie, he realized that it was perfect; it captured the right sense of joy. And I agree with him.
Probably the happiest scene in film history
I just love this scene!
From Mark Lewisohn's book on The Beatles "He (George) burst into the room clutching a radio and shouting "We're on! We're on!!""
The Woolworth's, perfect touch.
if you've been to Orange, CA (near Anaheim) you've been to that filming location 🧡
The thrill and joy in this scene is absolutely incredible to watch. Kind of like in the original Willy Wonka movie when Charlie slowly opens the candy bar, and then sees that glimmering corner of the golden ticket. It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
You know, if you glance at the thumbnail for this clip, it appears that Faye is sprouting fangs in her lower jaw...
Hahaha thats what i thought
As a Musician this is the greatest moment of your life.
2:00 Jimmy finally acknowledges that Guy was right
Great directing by Tom Hanks.
This remains one of my favorite films of all time.
This movie would have never worked if someone didn't write a catchy as fuck song. I don't know who wrote it, and I don't care. But good job dude :)
It was written by Adam Schlesinger from a band called Fountains of Wayne:
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/That_Thing_You_Do_(song)
Agreed. I only watched the movie after hearing the song on MTV (yeah, back in 1996 when they still showed music videos). Great movie, great soundtrack!
ironically done by another one hit wonder band that did stacy's mum. Now with this song they are no longer a one hit wonder.
Johnny Rockets+ I agree. Imagine if the song was terrible. I wouldn’t watch it.
I Want It That Waaay!
had the sudden inkling to watch this scene waiting for the train yesterday. then i remembered...oh WAIT, this is the scene that always makes me cry. too late. i was near bawling right as i got on the G train. no regrets. the oneders forever.
