I have this identical set. I also have the freight set. My grandfather bought them in 1934 in downtown Chicago. Kind of expensive in 1934, but not really. They've lasted 89 years
That's one nice set. what a gem i really like old school stuff even though i model in 'HO' scale. plus i like watching old time toy trains made before my time.
Hi Dave, Oh to be a kid back then at Christmas time! I have a little 3130 bell ringer that the bell is in the cab and I love it! i really appreciate my O gauge flyers and i can't think of a better caretaker of this set than you! Happy Thanksgiving from PA.
A friend of mine picked it up at an estate sale because he knew I would like it. He only charged me what he paid and it was astonishing low! What a generous friend he was. Sure do miss him.
Sounds like choo choos coming from the engine. Very faint but I hear it. The realism of the whole train Is much better looking than Lionel Standard gauge was. American Flyer all the way!!
You must have paid a ''King's Ransom'' for that set, It is a real beauty, A real gem.
Handsome locomotive ! The fire box light gives a touch of reality !

@rondillon1144 It lasted 89 years because it was built to last, Not that 'MADE IN CHINA' junk they make nowadays.
This is a wonderful set and I'm glad you found it. Thanks for sharing and "Happy Rails". GMan
Not many of these out there in that great original condition. Beautiful set. Bravo for preserving. Thank-you
Marx guy here, I spotted My Aunt Minnie in the observation car. Folks back home say she aint been seen since 43.
What a gorgeous set, I love it!
Gilbert should have put the firebox glow in the S gauge steamers. What a great set!
Great looking set !!!!

Nicely done! Love the behind the scenes and view of th passenger cars!
That was a 'Chicago' built AF before A.C. Gilbert company bought the AF line in 1938 and moved it to New Haven Connecticut.
This is a wonderful train set. I like the bell mechanism. Thanks for showing the system.

Really cool set
Well this run on 031
I was running it on O42 so I’m pretty sure that it would run on O31 as well.
@@daveclarklumber awesome yeah it's a beautiful train I like Lionel as well but this American Flyer stuff is also cool
@@daveclarklumber Thanks for the response to my reply
@@daveclarklumber thank you for reviewing my comment.
Almost scale!
How do you take the shell off? I cant figure it out
There are
Two screws, one above the firebox and the other above the steam chest. It can be a snug fit as many castings are warped.

Do you use new track or the original tracks?
I am the running the set on regular O27 track. The minimum on the layout is O42.
