Got mine brand new in July, somehow paid $530 new,
Zzounds had it for $699, I talked em down to $630
Then a week later another company had it new for $599
So they refunded me the $100 difference between sale prices
Not realizing they only charged me $630 to start,
So bottom line was $530 for a brand new gibson les Paul!
Sold my epiphone les Paul for $280
Net cost for new American made les Paul $250!!!
Sorry.......thought that was a sweet deal!

They are $1,299 as of October 2012. I know because I just got mine and that's the price everywhere. Mine is weight relieved at 7 lbs. 10 oz. I am going to chamfer the top edge as that's something that I always do to round it off for long hours of playing comfort.

Great review as always Hunter. Loved the riff, even if it's recycled. Gibson QC appears to be a joke, but volume controls really are tone controls, but not the other way around ;-) Ha ha! Simon was harsh calling it a "toy guitar", but some of those matte finishes leave a lot to be desired at that price point. Rock on bro!

I tried the 2016 and 2017 Tribute yet, none of my local stores have any of the 2018s yet. I found the 2017 tribute to have a thinner neck than the 2016 tribute. It's awesome that you finally re uploaded this video. I enjoyed it the first time. The knob crap makes me laugh. Let's be honest. It happens. In a mass produced world, mistakes are made, and you managed not to notice either. That being said, if this was actually your guitar, one phone call to Gibson, would most likely rectify the situation. I think, for the price, this guitar is a lot of win.

  • @tylerl8934

  • @BunkMasterFlex77
    @BunkMasterFlex77 7 лет назад +2

The 9 hole weight relief typically will reduce the weight by LESS than half a pound. For a roughly 9 pound average Les Paul, this isn't going to make much of a difference. The modern weight relief is really what people need to look for if they want a light Les Paul. Although something about a heavy guitar makes me think it has better tone than it probably does.

Not having binding doesn’t make the guitar play worse,in fact it keeps down labor costs so as to make the guitar more affordable. As long as the maple and mahogany are fine it’s then up to the pick ups and hardware

PRS charges $2000 for a CE24 with a Korean bridge a less dramatic body carve and a gig bag, and nobody is complaining. The S2 guitars sound like crap, Korean pickups and parts and nobody's complaining. Gibson makes a decent guitar outfit (guitar and case) for $1100, and everybody is bitching. I bought this guitar because the used American Telecaster (2016) was so thin it cut my eardrums. Took it back for the worst Carvin ever made. A dope fiend CT6 that some idiot ripped the pickups out and replaced with MIGHTY MITE ACTIVE PICKUPS. I was ready for a real guitar. I just wanted a workhorse to teach with. This fit the bill nicely. It is comfortable. Easy to handle. Not too heavy. It plays great and sounds like an American made Gibson guitar. If you don't like em', buy something else. You can still find a good Studio for 6 or 7 hundred! By the way, the Carvin was ordered used on line.

I have the 2017 model and love it. The price was super sweet. The newer price does seem like a stretch, particularly now that they are now doing less work by not doing any weight relief to the bodies.
All the same, it's a great guitar that's priced right for an entry level, no BS, American made Gibson!

I just bought one of these for $999.00. CG has them on sale through November. Got one that was made out of one solid piece of mahogany. Compared it to the best of the Epiphones and while they are much prettier (the Gibson without neck binding looks really cheap) quite frankly, they don't sound as good. For a grand, I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a much better deal in the way of a brand new guitar that sounds like a proper Les Paul.

  • @Varone26
    @Varone26 7 лет назад

The few things I wish Gibson would go back to is to use nickel hardware since it gives it a nice age look to it, chrome seems ways to gotti. And to reshape the headstock back to the early-mid 2000s design. They look like 61 SG or LP Custom headstocks.

There is another way of telling the year of the model; the maple cap on the side of the body are lighter in color and looks almost like a binding, meanwhile on the 2018 model the maple cap is darker, i personally think the 2017 maple cap looks much cooler and gives it a sweeter contrast.

  • @BillyBlaze7

I bought 6 Gibsons this year, out of 6 Gibsons 6 of them had major issues with QC, I sent 5 back and kept the 2017 Tribute les paul gold top.
I have had to replace the crappy Kluson tuners with Grovers to keep it in tune, replace the strings (crap), and do a full set up including intonation (I guess Gibson couldn't be bothered.
Things I couldn't fix, was the over rounding of the fret ends that cause the low E to slip off the fretboard from time to time, and the crappy lack of any type of proper leveling to the fretboard end that meets the neck.
Things I did to make it look better....I got some light compound wax and polished the headstock front and the top, to make it look like an aged gloss, huge improvement over the satin in my option, but then again I have seen what happens to a satin finish after a little time playing...glossy in spots.
Things I plan on doing to make it better, get rid of the bridge pickup for a 57 classic plus, and the neck pickup with a 57 classic. Although the 490r isn't too bad, would actually be pretty good in the bridge position to me going through my Mesa Five 35 half stack.
I lucked out and got the case that came with the 2018 models with my 2017 model and it's a very nice case for sure, I was thinking of buying an Epiphone hard case for it untill I laid hands on the 2018 soft case, it's really a nice case.

I thought of this les paul for menny years (a Gibson les paul with a 1 piece mahogany body and neck non weight relive for around 1,000 dollar's) this is a you can gig with out worrying about and it looks and sounds great And the 3 les pauls weight are 9,'6,> 8.11 and 8.10 lbs, so there is no problems with comfort...

yes Gibson is at it again the 2018 les paul was perfect (I bought three) with the non weight relief 1 piece mahogany body (about 90 percent) and 1 piece mahogany neck... now 2019 tribute has gone bad a maple neck a chamber body dot inlays and 150 dollars more... wow Gibson please think 2018 as your come back year... people will buy them

I was ready to buy one of these so went to 2 different big guitar stores in my city and tried 4 of these guitars, 2 each of gold top and honey burst. The quality control on these guitars is atrocious, shameful. I wasn’t expecting super high end, but I’ve owned sub $1000 Gibsons, Mexican Fenders etc in the past. I think I had reasonable expectations and am accustomed to doing some set-up work myself.
    However, every one had:
    1) a messed up nut, installed crookedly, too tall, one had a weird stain from the glue used to hold it in, one had been filed down so far on its side there was crazy scoring on the neck/fretboard
    2) very poor set-up, high action, pickup heights all over the place
    3) the worst fretwork I’ve ever seen on a reputable brand guitar. Sharp edges, hadn’t been polished.
    4) you could see the routing in the body not covered by the pickup rings
They want $1200 for these things. I picked up a $1600 LP Studio and a $700 Epi LP standard pro. Both these guitars looked and felt about the same- light years ahead of these Tributes. However, not the same guitar I know, I picked up a $500 Mexican Fender Strat at it felt better than any of these guitars. Mildly freaked out out I started picking up other random guitars to see how they felt, checking fretwork and setup. Squiers, cheap ESP/LTDs, Ibanez. Guitars all falling in the $250-600ish range. All better than these $1200 Gibsons.
At the end I grabbed a couple $2300 Gibson LP Standards for comparison. Now THAT is a nice guitar. Beautiful, great finish. Loved them.
Now if I only had $2500 to spend on a guitar...

I’m eyeing up the 2021 version of this right now because of the modern weight relief. My shoulder can’t handle really heavy guitars anymore. But I’m also considering the 2021 Studio model. But I think I like the look of the tribute better. More old school.

498T No Weight Relief much better then 2017 Tribute. Only upgrade I've done to my Neck Pickup to a DiMarzio Eric Johnson 211 huge tone range.

i'm really diggin it. put some 10's, setup, and play like butter.
Only thing that i've noticed was that it don't have the vanilla smell. But, is a great guitar

do you reckon that the difference between the Tribute LP and the Standard one is abysmal? Cause I want to buy a Gibson, and I'm not really sure that I want to spend 2.5 grand, I want to keep an eye on the budget :)

there's just too many things wrong with the design of the headstock, and lately also quality control in gibson has gone downhill, i used to be a big gibson fan, until i opened my eyes... and saw their guitars for what they really were, after experiencing all sorts of issues with guitars that should not have issues, especially when you pay more then $1,700 for one of them, you expect that guitar to be better then the next entry level squier $300 guitar, not the $300 guitar being upgraded to a $ 700 guitar and sounding way better and have less construction faults at the neck then a nearly $2,000 guitar with taxes accounted for who only know how to overcharge their customers for the big logo on the headstock, and you know what they say about guys who need big logos... their headstock is very weak amigo

@@gmmakesmehurl I believe the Gibson headstock breakers are telecaster players and they assume their new Gibbys are indestructible also.

Great review man. Just the info I wanted to hear.
I just stopped in GC and spotted one of these. I thought the price was a misprint. I rarely plug in guitars to demo but the body looked and felt great. I wanted to see how the neck played and the pickups sounded. I was very pleasantly surprised. I love that it’s stripped down to just the essentials and that there’s No binding. For $999 it’s almost a no brainer to pick up this geetar. I’m in the process of packing up one of my Epiphones to sell and offset the cost. 🤘🏼
