      @pjschafer5786 26 дней назад +3

      they should just rebadge the GR Corolla as a Subaru "Nitro STi", put it 1 tier above the WRX and lower WRX's price. Their Nitro should be fully lightened and roll caged to justify it being the halo car and differ it from Corolla. Nitro owners would also benefit by being able to service at Toyota dealers. The market would be racers who don't expect creature comforts the kind that even a Toyota enthusiast driver would expect.
      This wouldn't be far fetched since everyone is aware of the collaboration between GR86 and BRZ

      Not necessarily one of my buds just had his engine claim denied on his 19 sti. It was bone stock aside from a q300 catback. Oil changes every 3k miles with receipts. Engine failed at 36k miles. SOA said that his computer recorded that the car had been revved to 6800 rpm at 14k miles and that his oil was only about 75% full between the low and full dot on the dip stick. Long story short they said being a quarter of a quart from full and making full use of the provided rev range was enough to deny his warranty claim and stiff him with a 3800 bill for the tear down of his motor.

    I’ve owned both the VA and VB WRX. In between I’ve had a 2017 CRV, a 2018 Regal TourX, a 2015 Q50 (last year of the NA3.7 V6) and a 2020 Giulia. I think the reviewers of the VB chassis have an expectation of significant change between the VA and VB while Subaru made incremental changes to correct what was wrong with the VA. Specifically, I’m talking about changes to the headroom of the engine for mods and the absolutely horrendous throttle tuning on the VA. To that end, I think that Subarus product planners recognized who their market for the VA was, what was happening with that market and applied that thinking to the VB chassis. The VB chassis is a baseline canvas for the modding community to apply their individual final touches to the car as is customary in the WRX community. On the VB chassis, you can get to 300 wheel horsepower with just a few bolt-ons and reliably run the car in the 350-400WHP with a tune and a few bolt-ons whereas with the VA you were living on a knife edge once you tuned past 320WHP. When framed as a baseline canvas vs a fully baked product with minimal headroom for RELIABLE mods, it’s easy to understand the current gen WRX.

    • @emmalab02
      @emmalab02 26 дней назад +2

      Also, the VB is easier to drive with its more linear throttle tuning compared to the hyper progressive throttle tuning in the VA.

      There’s no STi coming for VB. The new generation is 2 years away which will be hybrid. Even if it does it will be 300HP hybrid. It ain’t going to be a 450 HO monster. Subaru is single handedly killing the WRX. It lacks features and is overpriced compared to the competitors.

Now at stage 3 with a bigger turbo and better fuel system, I get 18-20 city and 23-25 on the highway. Best mpg I got was 30mpg cruising at 55 for 4 hours I put about 357 miles on that tank which is a unicorn for sti’s and the gas light wasn’t even on.

    A few things bug me about this generation WRX. I own a 2018 WRX, it has the VA engine in it. It REQUIRES 91 or better octane gas. The new WRX has the VB engine, the same engine in the Ascent and Outback. The two SUVs only require 87 octane. The WRX has 3-4 more hp, but it REQUIRES 91 or better octane gas. Tuners have worked on the Ascent and Outback and gotten 400 hp on 93 octane gas. How are they getting 400 hp versus the stock WRX hp? Subaru could have put out a WRX STI with 360+ hp on 91 octane and still be reliable. Instead, they give us this. WTF Subaru? And when I bought my 2018 in the summer of 2017, I paid $33k for a Premium with Performance Package, which included the Recaros and upgraded brakes. Now the BASE is $33k? The base was $26k in 2018.

If you want jumpy, get the GRC and track it - this car is not about that. It is still a classic by being an AWD manual with limited tech nonsense. It’s fine. There is no crossroads here. My '21 WRX premium has LED interior lights, it was an option. Crazy to think the TR doesn't come standard with them.
    Edit: Had to come back after finishing the video lol. All the points you stated were exactly the same as when I test drove VB WRX. Super light numb steering (the VA already had fairly numb steering thanks to the electric rack, but the VB is probably twice as light), stock power was essentially the same and less "edgy", the VA WRX feels more like a 90's turbo while the VB WRX was far flatter and more linear. The shifter has been sloppy since the switched to the 6 speed with the cable system, although the 6 speed is far better than the old 5 speed. I pretty much rebuilt the entire thing, solid bushings, replaced shift plate, 3d printed my own nylon parts, it's lightyears better now. The VB, even this TR, isn't anywhere near good enough to warrant having to do that all over again to get it back where I want it.

    You forgot about the Golf R. Didn’t mention it once. Just bought one in June. In Canada we get the WRX RS (similar to the TR but with some options deleted like the upgraded Harmon Kardon stereo). It’s $47K CAD with destination. I just bought a manual ‘24 VW Golf R for $52 CAD (carbon package, no sunroof at MSRP). It has torque vectoring AWD, 315 HP, digital gauges, 15-mode adaptive dampers, NO plastic bodywork and actual heated & cooled Napa leather front buckets. Can’t get any of those things on the WRX RS/TR. The new ‘25 WRX tS will easily be over $50K CAD. The WRX is way overpriced for what you get and is 10 years behind its competitors. Subaru service is also ridiculously expensive as I found out having owned a 2017 Forester XT since new. Golf R, Honda Civic Type R, Acura Integra Type S, Hyundai Elantra N and Corolla GR are way better values (assuming you can buy at sticker price).

    Nice job, another great review Alanis. I had a bugeyes WRX back in the day and sort of feel like that was the high point of overall fun. There have been a lot of ups and downs since but I feel like the latest generation has lost most of the magic. It will be interesting to see what the upcoming tS edition is like -- looks to follow the tR formula but with a digital dash and adaptive suspension with settable comfort levels. I don't know if that will be enough to lure me back in. They really need to add back the fun and character they had in previous generations, and for heaven's sake, update the interior and infotainment graphics to something more contemporary. This could be a great car with a few improvements.

    I dont think ive ever seen a review talk about the cabin light. Very good attention to detail!
    I still love my '13 BRZ. Was way more fun to drive than that year STi. But i also had a '13 Mustang GT/CS. So i had THE POWER there.
    Now i have two Teslas. Y and CT. The BRZ is the best fun on 4 wheels on great roads!

    this edition of the TR is for track ready and not tuner ready like before. There's a motortrend guy that said the STI is coming back and not in electric shitty version but based on the FA 24, is it going to happen we can't be sure but the guy seemed really confident in what he was saying. Might happen when subaru release a face lifted version of the VB. Let's hope it's real.

    • @AlanisKing
      @AlanisKing  25 дней назад

      I don’t see it being track ready either, necessarily! Lots of extra weight and features that aren’t necessary for the track, like those heated/power seats

    Yellow lights are still common everywhere except the USA, Americans prefer these hospital lights literally everywhere not only in the cars, in hospitals, at home, and in shops! yellow lights are warm, safe and cosy, but unfortunately, wallmarters are not used to comfort and require everyone to put surgery cold white domes everywhere they can. what are you going to see with bright white lights? Are you working with documents in your cars?

    No more combustion engines in Subarus? They're digging their own grave. Destination fees are a scam just like doc fees. I'm not going to pay for the dealer having the car delivered to him. That's for him to carry. Not me.

    And now that I’ve seen the whole thing, I totally agree with what you’ve said. It looks like a car that *could* have been great, but it’s been the victim of cost cuts, bottom lines, and a bit of an identity crisis. The next one will likely be a paradigm shift, as you’ve speculated, but…what exactly will that be - and, will the “WRX demographic” receive it well? 👀

    @15:10 I have to highly disagree. As someone who had an 04 STI 10 years ago and currently owns a 23 WRX, it’s nice having the more modern basics while still having the analog speedometer and tachometer. It gives it a very nostalgic feeling in a good way for me, but everyone has their own opinion.

    First Subaru I drove was the Impreza WRX (before WRX became its own separate model). It was way ahead of Honda, Toyota, Ford, and Volkswagen. Only thing close to it was the Dodge Neon SRT4. Now it feels like it is at the bottom of the pack. 😢

      I feel like these things are cyclical. My biggest criticism of most Toyotas is that their interiors aren't up to par, and that's because, in my opinion, they can fall back on the reliability reputation. When automakers can fall back on reputation, they focus other things in the meantime (to their own detriment)

  • @tedadamgreen
    @tedadamgreen 26 дней назад +2

    I think the yellow interior lights would be acceptable if it was a STI … just saying.
    The absence of the STI is just unbelievable.
    A great vehicle with a great history that seems to be riding off into the sunset …
    I just don’t think there will be a new generation coming.
    I hope I am wrong.
    “WRX - same as it ever was” for good and bad.
    Great video as always!
