The Lizard suite is really something else. Such a brilliant composition. Also if you want more flute in your prog rock, I recommend Jethro Tull. Their album Aqualung would be a great place to start if you haven't checked them out yet.
Fun fact about indoor games: The session singer Gordon Haskell thought the song was so absurd that he starting cracking up at the end of the take… and they kept it in because they liked it I guess. This album is very peculiar, Robert Fripp even called it “unlistenable” at one point. But it has somehow found its way as a favorite for some fans. Lizard fans exist in a “sub-cult” of sorts, because being a Crimson fan is already like being in a cult ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
Great reaction and thoughts! Glad you are very open minded when it comes to bands like King Crimson! BTW the vocalist at the beginning of Lizard (song) was Jon Anderson from the band Yes (another Prog Rock band), also Happy Family is talking about The Beatles!
My favorite by King Crimson. This one takes more than one listen! Love the medieval atmosphere, but not so crazy about the free-form jazz improv. If you look closely, many of the jacket illustrations relate directly to the songs. Yep - there's the Beatles on the cover. They are the 'Happy Family', letting their 'Sargent mirror spin'. 'Silver Rolls from golden rock' is the Rolls Royce the gold records could buy. The lyrics are jam-packed with poetic metaphors. 'Circus' is about the soul being given a body ('sowed me with carbon') being born, and entering the chaotic world. ("Pushed me down the slide into the arena...") Yes, and so much more. BTW, What you thought was a violin is a wind instrument -- most likely an oboe. Pretty good reaction - the entire album is a huge chunk to digest on first listen. Quite draining, really. But once you know it, it all makes sense - and is worth the trouble. Several people have suggested some Jethro Tull for you. Just don't start with 'Thick as a Brick', unless it is the shorter version from Madison Square Garden. Cheers!
An underrated early KC album. Surreal, zany, jazzy and pure cacophony at times. On "Prince Rupert Awakes" that's Jon Anderson (of Yes) singing and the violin is Fripp on guitar. Peace on earth.
Love the reactions! The laughing at the end of Indoor Games is because the singer HATED the lyrics and thought the last verse was ridiculous. The "hey ho" is the lyricist reacting defensively haha
Prince Rupert is "Prince Rupert of the Rhine", who was a talented cavalry commander who fought on the Royalist side during the English Civil War in the 17th century. (The Royalists lost, hence his "lament").
You spoil us! Great reaction as always. This album isn't necessarily my favorite from KC, but the Lizard song is probably one of their best songs. The vocals for the first part of the Lizard track is Jon Anderson, lead singer of Yes, another must-listen in 70s prog rock! You should check Close to the Edge out by them if it isn't already on your list. Another must-listen for a lover of flute is Jethro Tull. Their lead singer is a master of flute! I'd recommend Thick as a Brick, Aqualung, or Songs from the Woods (especially SFTW if you like more low-key rock). :)
I adore this album, it sounds like nothing else in the world. It’s weird and flawed but it’s an experience unlike any other. Fripp hates it and thinks anyone that likes it is strange. For me, this album is the perfect soundtrack for going out to walk in the woods in the winter while smoking a j
I believe you are the first to actually review all of their albums, this one was Robert Fripp's (head of band) solo album while most of the original members left he was left at his semi unstable creative whim. Most consider this to be their weakest though I'd say it's one of their strongest and a part of an unofficial Quattro of albums: In the Court, In the Wake, Macdonald & Giles and Lizard to top it off. The Lizard Suite is one of the most beautiful transitional melodies that covers a lot of esoteric rhetoric, a very thick album in that, the bolero is a gorgeous tune. Congratulations to you on taking on their discography, I'd say it's one of the strongest in the history of music.
If you're into King Crimson, another brilliant prog rock band is Genesis. I would definitely try Selling England by the Pound or Nursery Cryme ! Love the videos :)
@@louisbhtanner7503 yes. Tony Banks said recently that 98% of their songs are unfortunately overlooked. I will say that with a lot of young people who do reaction videos on here is a good thing. I never get bored of Genesis.
Andy McCulloch's drums are outstanding throughout. Indoor Games was famously used in a episode of Shooting Stars (the spoof gameshow). Being steeped in jazz, the mid-Happy-Family collective improv is just the sort of data-overload I like. Ditto the collective improv in the Bolero section of the Suite (though the latter was actually subject to a lot of editing/repair work in the studio). My thoughts during the Lizard Suite - Are those "scary sound effects" or just some "dirty chords" on a Mellotron? During the Battle scene, Nick Evans, Keith Tippett and Fripp's Mellotron all get filthy, but Evans surely wins the award. Fripp's guitar solo is fondly remembered as the first time he used his familiar "all sustain and feedback" style on record. There was/maybe still is a Prince Rupert's Tears website devoted to analysing what this suite is actually about.
For many years I thought the lyric “Prince Rupert’s tears of glass” was just strange. But recently I learned of something called Prince Rupert’s drop. It is a piece of molten glass dropped into ice water where it immediately hardens. It looks just like a glass tear with a drop portion with a long “tail”. The drop portion is very strong and can withstand being hit with a hammer. The tail is fragile and can be easily broken and if you break it the entire drop shatters into a million pieces. You can see it in action by just typing Prince Rupert’s Drop into search here on RUclips. Really interesting! Also you can look it up on Wikipedia.
I agree with you that the battle section in Lizard is not as hard hitting as it should be. Thankfully they fixed that in 2018 - the version on the Meltdown live album (with 3 drummers) fucking kills!
It is an oboe (also a cor anglais) played by Robin Miller. He also plays on the album Red. Fripp said Miller’s oboe is the only thing he likes about the album.
Cant believe they got Stewie Griffin to sing on Indoor Games. Also the fact you called Jon a female vocalist made me bust because that is so understandable
You might not see this but I recommend you listen to Poliphony by Poliphony (1973). It's a beautiful album that gets attention in a lot of small communities, definitely would be the first to review it.
NEVER FORGET THAT KING CRIMSON AND ROBER FRIPP ARE THE SAME THING, SO I RECOMMEND LISTENING TO FRIPP'S SOLO ALBUMS, The League of Gentlemen IS CONSIDERED THE BEST ALBUM IN ROCK HISTORY, ALTHOUGH THERE IS ZAPPA...NO WONDER David Bowie ASKED HIM TO COME FROM NEW YORK TO BERLIN JUST TO PLAY THE GUITAR BASE YOU HEAR IN THE SONG HEROES,ruclips.net/video/Lm8xCYZjB-M/видео.html

The singer in the Lizard song is the same singer of Yes, a band that I recommend in your last King Crimson video!

On "Prince Rupert Awakes" that's Jon Anderson (of Yes) singing and the violin is Fripp on guitar.
Peace on earth.
It is Oboe, not Fripp on guitar. The Bolero is written by Fripp, but played by Robin Miller on Oboe
Happy Family is about The Beatles, Jonah= John , Jude =Paul, Silas =George, Rufus =Ringo.
Since you liked the flute you really should listen to Jethro Tull, Ian Andersons flute work is incredible.
the most underrated kc album, one of my favs

Damn my fault

what
As far as i know the Singer started laughing at the end of Indoor games because He found the Song weird/bad
Wow your reaction videoed of King Crimson’s full albums is so precious. Especially this one!

For a flute lover, I would recommend Jethro Tull's Thick As A Brick. One of the best albums ever imo.
I agree Ian Anderson is amazing
Lizard gang rise up!!!

This is my favorite KC album. The Lizard suite is awesome.
My favourite King Crimson album, brilliant stuff
I have to see this guy reacting to The Great Deceiver
Great vid as always, off topic but I’d absolutely recommend entertainment by Gang of Four

I was thinking the band gets together sitting in the studio and going hey what do you guys want to play today?

Le Orme - Contrappunti. Great progressive rock album from 1974. Recommend you highly.
That "Female" is Jon Anderson who is very Male.
The lead singer of the band Yes.
Hey try I talk to the wind that has flute in that song studio version
The album cover illustrates the lyrics like a midevil tapestry
I definitely recommend Hot Rats by Frank Zappa

Some of this music sounds Zappa ish
try somethin different. My advice is 'This mortal coil' - Blood' project
bro got the RYM music taste in the back LOL
You would do quite well to stick to the versions of kc that are fronted by Greg Lake or Adrian Belew... exclusively.
You're welcome. 🎉
