Skunks don't have great eye sight and can only see up to 10ft (3m) in front of them. But like rattlesnakes they're also extremely hesitant to use their main defense mechanism (the chemical N-butyl mercaptan) because they are smart enough to know they have a limited supply. So they will usually stomp their front paws at you or spread their tail as a polite way to tell you to "F-ck off and leave me alone, hombre!"
Also RUclips is lame and turns any video under 60 seconds into a "short" which is their desperate grasp at trying to keep up with the whole Instagram-Reel/Appeal-to-Instant-Dopamine/Attention-Deficit-format so if this gets formatted into a "short" it's the bigwig tech weirdos' fault and not mine.

not gonna lie, growing up in the boonies in the midwest, the smell of skunks is nostalgic af, usually from roadkill unfortunately, but I never smell it anymore in my current urban situation, miss it

We feed/used to feed the animals at my parent's house, the skunks eventually recognized my dad and weren't scared of him.

Hey forest anon! I got a couple of questions, first of all how have you built your stuff? and is it "legal" to do it?? im asking because in my country all forests are state property and they are more than happy to kick out any dwellers. Where have you learned the skills that help you stay alive day to day? cheers!!

    • @ForestAnon

Look up a book called Shelters Shacks and Shanties! I got the idea for my cabin design there 👊🏻 I went for a "shed roofed" "trapper's tilt", and since I'm not a good carpenter I just used tarps for my roof and door hahah 🏚
As far as legalities, I'm living 100% illegally on federal land. I could get kicked out anytime, even fined and do jail time, but there's no way they'll ever find me or really even want to try. And if they do then Ill just pack up and pick another mountain! The trick is to build your home on a spur, between the "lines of drift" (basically between canyons and gullies that encourage the traffic of mammals, where humans are most likely to look) and to live minimal so you can always throw the necessities on your back and scram if you ever need to.
As far as skills go I spent all my time since 2012 studying edible plants and the flora and fauna in general, books and lots of time in the hills of my hometown - but also believe it or not I think most of the learning I did came from being just a hoodlum skate rat in the streets, and from hobos older than me who have passed and are long gone by now.
Hope all is good my friend! 👊🏻🌲

If you see a skunk out in broad daylight chances are it may have rabies. They are nocturnal.

Do you mean my white long-sleeve? If so it's just a thermal undershirt 👊🏻 I like them because I can get packs of 5 for $10 - You can usually always find them in a store that sells underwear!

Hey forest anon, my roommates got our IP banned from Instagram so I can't ask you there, just want to ask how your trip to the city is going. I also would like to ask you for a book recommendation on where you learned tree identification. I can't tell a doughlas fir from a red fir from a hemlock fir, and can't find any useful resources on the web.

The walk sucked! Mission Failed this time hahah. I returned to my cabin because some bum stole my phone out of my backpack while I was inside somewhere getting food. Luckily I waited around the area for a couple days, found him and got it back but I had spent a lot of time and money waiting around. Then I saw the dead body of a homeless lady hanging out of a dumpster and decided I was over it and missed my mountains. But I'm actually taking the bus and train to my hometown today and I'm excited to finally see old buddies again!
A book that helped me most with tree Identification are Trees of Western North America by Spellenberg, Earle and Nelson (but I'm not sure of your region or if that would be helpful). The Peterson Field Guide to Trees and Shrubs is great too. It covers a lot of the east. You can find both of those as free downloads on Libgen! You'll really have to read, then sort of cross reference what you read with what you can find online and Google Scholar is extremely helpful too but in the end what helps the most is good clear photos and just time poking around in the field 👊🏻🌲

@@ForestAnonGood lord! ): I'm so sorry that you went through all that. It's a shame that the industrial world is so cold sometimes.
I'm very grateful for the reccomendations, and will absolutely check those out. I hope you have an amazing time with your homies.
      Have fun, safe travels
