I feel the need to share the story of Russian dance as well. I'm not sure which nation it is from but that's certainly a Caucasus nation and many of their dances hold to this principle: all of the dancers are graceful and prideful like birds, males are harsh and determined like eagles and females are reserved and tender like swans. They circle each other the whole dance with males trying to 'impress' females with their moves, much like a mating dance.

This is the Warrior Dance... which is derived from our DATU Ancestors from Borneo/Malaysia... specifically the Murut Tribe... this story they are telling is about the Tree of Life and how to Access it. In fact there is hidden symbology in everything you see from the colors, to the bamboo... to the women and men... everything has meaning and is connected to something spiritual.

As a Chinese Australian, i would say these dances are both amazing in there own unique way. But i found the Philippine dance with quite lots of skill and dazzling movements. All in all i do think the Philippines slayed here. But for Russia, it was a very elegant, clicky sort of dance. The movements were clean and synchronized. The thing i like about the Russian dance is how neatly they walk and how synchronized they are. Both cultures are astounding in they're on way.

@@janjamesramos247 the first one is singkil dance from the Muslim Maranao tribe. You'll actually danced from the beginning the slowest pace until it gets fast. It's my favorite Moro dance out of all other Moro tribal dances. I dance singkil before and it's pretty difficult with the tiptoeing with the fast hand and legs movement and my feet was caught by the bamboo poles quite times. There's only 3 of us dancing: I, the princess, my prince and my maid carrying the beautiful umbrella and 4 guys holding the 4 bamboo poles. This version is highly modified but I still like it because it's mesmerising to watch to dance between those poles.

As I was raised in Mindanao I auditioned to be a part of Singki Dance troupe at schoo.I'm shy to admit I was rejected thrice.Too difficult..the frequency and intensity of the bamboo poles as it closes and opens while not looking at it facing nowhere while you dance spells danger.It requires skill.Only for the ninjas.😂😂😂😂

Tama po... actually yung dances namin is a fusion of ballet, contemporary, and folk. I guess the video was taken last 2014. It was the US tour of Leyte Dance Theater after Yolanda. Sadly, namatay ang artistic director/choreographer namin noong 2018. After two months, nasunog yung dance studio namin.
I was part of an ethnic dance group during college which featured the various tribal dances here in Mindanao. Maybe because I knew the difficulty of Singkil (I was a fan dancer of Singkil back then), I am actually having doubts if I can do that Russian dance. Based from my experiences before, the easier and the slower the dance look, I found later that it was more torture for me because of the stricter and harder muscle control HAHAHA.

I remember my elementary days in papua new guinea, professional dancers from the Philippines performed at our school. They just happened to be in the country to promote Phil tourism. Our Australian and local teachers were in awe.. for one week after that night, i could hear the teachers talking about vacationing in the philippines.

For us born in Mindanao, this is the short version to appeal to the Audience. True Filipino dances have to be shown in its organic form. My mom trained and danced with the original teachers and she researched a lot of this dances and went to each place to truly convey the dance in its true and authentic form. There should be no comparison of each culture, just appreciation and understanding. The shoes worn by the ladies is reminiscent of the Chinese royalty. Our bright and sparkly costumes and the styles are very similar. If you look closely. My mom always made me aware of these things. As part of my moms dance troupe we had to know the history behind all our dances. Including dances from other nations and cultures.
The Russian performance was so elegant. The movements and facial expressions were meticulously and admirably executed but the Philippine performance was absolutely breathtaking. Both groups' costumes were impressive as well.
The cheering of the audience is very audible to the Filipinos. The level of difficulty is for the Filipinos. The cleanliness and formation is for the Russians. The harmony of the movements are very clean and precise. Very good formation and movements are all so majestic the credits for this criteria is for the Russians. Russian dance Its very calm and slow and quiet solemn. The level of difficulty is for the Filipinos. One mistake will lead to a pain and it will distract your movement so obvious. Timing here is everything without looking at the bamboos. Just looking straight at nowhere. There is speed, more action, swift movements and danger makes it very exciting to watch. Cheering is very audible to the Filipinos. Both are good. But Filipinos catched the fish in this performance.
Not taking away from the Filipino dance, the Russian dance looks easy but it's actually very hard (esp. On the girls/dolls part). I should know because i've been trying to do that as a kid (just for play, lol. Am not a part of any dance group, btw) and from what i can remember you really need muscle coordination and should also master balancing. Anyways, Singkil always takes my breath away, i admire not onlythe costumes and choreography, but the story/history behind it, let alone the movements' level of difficulty.
I used to dance Philippine Folk Dance professionally myself, and I am a perfectionist. Although I loved and am very much impressed w this Singkil number, it takes a whole lot more discipline, precision, and time to perfect that Russian dance number. It is not as easy as it looks bc the dancers made it look easy. They were floating! Both dances were very entertaining.
Admittedly the technique itself is not that hard to grasp, but to build up the neccessary muscle and to teach yourself to remain perfectly still in the upper part, to keep your knees and ankles bent just the right way and not drop from your toes... easy to understand, hard to actually do.
I'm not going to be ethnocentric here but the Philippines killed this. The Russian dance was surely graceful and organized BUT the overall quality and complexity, Philippines.
To be fair, that wasn’t the best example of the vitality of Georgian dance (yes, Georgian not Russian) as it is modified to more ballet like when the original dance is much more lively and quick footed. Also very hard on the shins by the look of it

@@jardin681 mizoram dance from India is an example of non-filipino bamboo dance. There are others dances from neighboring countries that incorporate bamboo poles in their dances such as the dances from Thailand, Malaysia, China, Indonesian, and even in south America.
It's not just about the difficulty of the dance or the synchronicity of the movements. "Singkil" is a depiction of the epic poem DARANGEN. So basicly you don't expect the dancers to have synchronize moves since they do have parts to play. Don't get me wrong. I appreciate Russia but you don't really have to compare both to see the beauty in it or who's better or not.

This dance is supposed to express the feeling of floating at baka virtues sa mga babae. Ang daming klaseng Russian dance, this is just one. Dito may nag-comment 'we Russians don't dance like that', mga Goergie daw yan. Pero Russian dance ba talaga yan, or Georgian dance ba yan? Kun tingnan mo sa RUclips yung National Ballet of Georgia, talagang pareho ang costume sa mga lalaki at babae, ang pagsayaw na low heeled shoes at using only the toes to move around, body straight in long costumes and elaborate crown-like headdresses para sa mga babae, parang mga angel sila na nag-float effortlessly. Ang mga lalake naman ay lumilipad, at using the high kicks, knee and shin slamping the floor while dancing parang sobrang masculine and in warrior spirit. Kasi ang Georgia, like many countries in the Eurasian continent, were part of Russian. These countries or kingdoms have fought, conquered each other for centuries, and thus have exchanced many cultural traits (and genes) among themselves . Both great performances, however they should not be compared to each other. Both countries have various styles of dance. If dances need to be compared, they should be in similar styles, for example Barynya (Russian) to any of the rural dances or even singkil (Philippine)
Ang sakit sa leeg ng russian dance. It takes a lot of discipline to dance that way. Yung sumasayaw ka pero di gumagalaw ang ulo mo, honestly ang strain nun sa leeg.
I find our Filipino cultural dance more exotic. The complexities of the moves are hard to execute. That perplex the audience and were delighted as seen by the big applause given to our dancers. Mabuhay Pilipinas!
Russian is more difficult dance ... It's carrying the balance of the body the elegance of the slow movement is not easy.. We just seen in our eyes that it is very easy but not ...The upper body from shoulder to head it's controlled of less movement is difficult... From the down the toe is obviously carrying all the weight of the body and moving in the air with mussel control and they do it very well very synchronized....impressive .... Philippines is also different level and amazing Both of them is fantastic....

I'm Filipino and danced folk dances through out my high school life. Both dances are hard but I can tell you that the Russian dance is harder because it's much more restricted with movement. But I love my own culture so Go Pinas!
Yes. I also commented this one as I was a part of a dance group which showcased tribal dances here in Mindanao. Seeing that Russian dance made my legs and hands shake/cramp remembering the slow dances that I did before 😅 And they are wearing high heels, diba? It looks stilts to me which is woah. I pity the persons on the last lines (V formation) as they would take larger steps. Each has its own beauty and charm. Singkil has thrills which I love - it always brings something from the audience. But in terms of difficulty, I'd rather not do that Russian dance 😅
The princess lost her servant. Usually in this dance the princess is shadowed by a slave who dances behind her holding an umbrella all through out the performance. Its a very majestic dance but very difficult to perform.
We did a version of the Singkil back in high school in the 1970's. I am elated that they still continue to show this excellent showcase of our beautiful history as a nation. Salamat po. Proud to be Filipino!
I can see that Russian cultural dance is very difficult to do, body movement like that is very hard to balance. While the difficult part of the Philippines is the bamboo dance(tinkling) but they're both good in their own way of style .
On this performance pareho lang naman po maganda walang lumamang. Pero Kung eh kumpara ang level of skills natin sa mga dances sa Russia? lamang talaga sila. Sa sayaw lang nato na Naka Releve ka it requires good balance ang strength sa mga paa at kahit sa ibang mga sayaw Nila like Katjusa, Kalinka at iba pa.
If I'm not mistaken, the Philippine group was Leyte Dance Theatre??? If they are indeed LDT then they are pros I would say since some of the dancers were instructors/professors in uni or just simply schoolmates of mine with extraordinary talent in dancing. Witnessed them having bruises and some heavy injuries just to master Singkil. And srsly tho, the Russian group was too majestic. Never seen so slow but elegant dance. Actually, the slower the dance the harder for the whole body to coordinate. The Philippines was unto timing and complexity of steps, but the Russia was eerily precise it hurts. Lol. In summarization, both are hard for a normal human being such as me.

Philippines for me. The degree of execution is difficult. Even tha audience is clapping and the degree of seeing is really suspenseful. For the Russian is mere decipline of formation. Its plain and simple. You will be noticing only the color colorful costume but there is no promising point you will see in the dance. But these are cultural dances. They are what they are since. Copyrighted long long time ago.

everytime those bamboos stick together it feels like my heart skips a beat because i know that if you get out of sync your feet will get stuck between those and it hurts! their execution is very good!!
one will get a sprain from it because those bamboos are clapping quite hard. I know because I saw that happened to a co-dancer when I was doing folk dancing way back when. :) one always has to listen to the beat of the bamboos and know when they are about to close.

As a Chinese Australian, i would say these dances are both amazing in there own unique way. But i found the Philippine dance with quite lots of skill and dazzling movements. All in all i do think the Philippines slayed here. But for Russia, it was a very elegant, clicky sort of dance. The movements were clean and synchronized. The thing i like about the Russian dance is how neatly they walk and how synchronized they are. Both cultures are astounding in they're on way.

@@janjamesramos247 the first one is singkil dance from the Muslim Maranao tribe. You'll actually danced from the beginning the slowest pace until it gets fast. It's my favorite Moro dance out of all other Moro tribal dances. I dance singkil before and it's pretty difficult with the tiptoeing with the fast hand and legs movement and my feet was caught by the bamboo poles quite times. There's only 3 of us dancing: I, the princess, my prince and my maid carrying the beautiful umbrella and 4 guys holding the 4 bamboo poles. This version is highly modified but I still like it because it's mesmerising to watch to dance between those poles.

As I was raised in Mindanao I auditioned to be a part of Singki Dance troupe at schoo.I'm shy to admit I was rejected thrice.Too difficult..the frequency and intensity of the bamboo poles as it closes and opens while not looking at it facing nowhere while you dance spells danger.It requires skill.Only for the ninjas.😂😂😂😂

Singkil is one of the more popular traditional dances performed in schools in the Philippines
School-based dance troupes have Singkil as part of their regular repertoire.
Actually it's been promoted everywhere. It's the lack of appreciation and support that's missing.

Tama po... actually yung dances namin is a fusion of ballet, contemporary, and folk. I guess the video was taken last 2014. It was the US tour of Leyte Dance Theater after Yolanda. Sadly, namatay ang artistic director/choreographer namin noong 2018. After two months, nasunog yung dance studio namin.

I was part of an ethnic dance group during college which featured the various tribal dances here in Mindanao. Maybe because I knew the difficulty of Singkil (I was a fan dancer of Singkil back then), I am actually having doubts if I can do that Russian dance. Based from my experiences before, the easier and the slower the dance look, I found later that it was more torture for me because of the stricter and harder muscle control HAHAHA.
Same goes for singing! Haha. The easier it looks or sounds, the harder it is actually because it boils down to control. 😂
We do some ethnic dance in mapeh so we dance singkil and it was hard for me becuase im the one who is holding the bamboo-

I remember my elementary days in papua new guinea, professional dancers from the Philippines performed at our school. They just happened to be in the country to promote Phil tourism. Our Australian and local teachers were in awe.. for one week after that night, i could hear the teachers talking about vacationing in the philippines.

For us born in Mindanao, this is the short version to appeal to the Audience. True Filipino dances have to be shown in its organic form. My mom trained and danced with the original teachers and she researched a lot of this dances and went to each place to truly convey the dance in its true and authentic form. There should be no comparison of each culture, just appreciation and understanding. The shoes worn by the ladies is reminiscent of the Chinese royalty. Our bright and sparkly costumes and the styles are very similar. If you look closely. My mom always made me aware of these things. As part of my moms dance troupe we had to know the history behind all our dances. Including dances from other nations and cultures.
The DIFFICULTY in the Russian dance is HIDDEN under those long skirt. SEE THAT SMALL PLATFORM footwear they're wearing?
I can't get over how long the Russian men walked on their toes! Have you tried that lately? I thought both groups were wonderful!

The Russian performance was so elegant. The movements and facial expressions were meticulously and admirably executed but the Philippine performance was absolutely breathtaking. Both groups' costumes were impressive as well.

Both are good. But Filipinos catched the fish in this performance.
Not taking away from the Filipino dance, the Russian dance looks easy but it's actually very hard (esp. On the girls/dolls part). I should know because i've been trying to do that as a kid (just for play, lol. Am not a part of any dance group, btw) and from what i can remember you really need muscle coordination and should also master balancing. Anyways, Singkil always takes my breath away, i admire not onlythe costumes and choreography, but the story/history behind it, let alone the movements' level of difficulty.
I used to dance Philippine Folk Dance professionally myself, and I am a perfectionist. Although I loved and am very much impressed w this Singkil number, it takes a whole lot more discipline, precision, and time to perfect that Russian dance number. It is not as easy as it looks bc the dancers made it look easy. They were floating! Both dances were very entertaining.
Admittedly the technique itself is not that hard to grasp, but to build up the neccessary muscle and to teach yourself to remain perfectly still in the upper part, to keep your knees and ankles bent just the right way and not drop from your toes... easy to understand, hard to actually do.
Any form of culture is incomparable. Both represented their culture and tradition. Both are magnificent.
I'm not going to be ethnocentric here but the Philippines killed this. The Russian dance was surely graceful and organized BUT the overall quality and complexity, Philippines.
To be fair, that wasn’t the best example of the vitality of Georgian dance (yes, Georgian not Russian) as it is modified to more ballet like when the original dance is much more lively and quick footed. Also very hard on the shins by the look of it

It's not just about the difficulty of the dance or the synchronicity of the movements. "Singkil" is a depiction of the epic poem DARANGEN. So basicly you don't expect the dancers to have synchronize moves since they do have parts to play. Don't get me wrong. I appreciate Russia but you don't really have to compare both to see the beauty in it or who's better or not.

This dance is supposed to express the feeling of floating at baka virtues sa mga babae. Ang daming klaseng Russian dance, this is just one. Dito may nag-comment 'we Russians don't dance like that', mga Goergie daw yan. Pero Russian dance ba talaga yan, or Georgian dance ba yan? Kun tingnan mo sa RUclips yung National Ballet of Georgia, talagang pareho ang costume sa mga lalaki at babae, ang pagsayaw na low heeled shoes at using only the toes to move around, body straight in long costumes and elaborate crown-like headdresses para sa mga babae, parang mga angel sila na nag-float effortlessly. Ang mga lalake naman ay lumilipad, at using the high kicks, knee and shin slamping the floor while dancing parang sobrang masculine and in warrior spirit. Kasi ang Georgia, like many countries in the Eurasian continent, were part of Russian. These countries or kingdoms have fought, conquered each other for centuries, and thus have exchanced many cultural traits (and genes) among themselves . At baga because of differences of expressions we get to understand them, research about them, curious to know them more. Sa akin that is a better approach. Both great performances, however they should not be compared to each other. Both countries have various styles of dance. If dances need to be compared, they should be in similar styles, for example Barynya (Russian) to any of the rural dances or even singkil (Philippine)

It's carrying the balance of the body the elegance of the slow movement is not easy.. We just seen in our eyes that it is very easy but not ...The upper body from shoulder to head it's controlled of less movement is difficult...

Singkil actually goes faster as it progresses. It starts slow then picks up speed and that's what makes it so exciting to watch and dance.

I'm Filipino and danced folk dances through out my high school life. Both dances are hard but I can tell you that the Russian dance is harder because it's much more restricted with movement.

Seeing that Russian dance made my legs and hands shake/cramp remembering the slow dances that I did before 😅 And they are wearing high heels, diba? It looks stilts to me which is woah. I pity the persons on the last lines (V formation) as they would take larger steps.
Each has its own beauty and charm. Singkil has thrills which I love - it always brings something from the audience. But in terms of difficulty, I'd rather not do that Russian dance 😅

In my heart, Philippines is unstoppable. Their costume is authentic. Very colorful. The execution is SO DIFFICULT to do it. No one can topple them.

Singkil must be well-coordinated and synchronized to come out with such a beautiful performance of the Philippine team.
The princess lost her servant. Usually in this dance the princess is shadowed by a slave who dances behind her holding an umbrella all through out the performance. Its a very majestic dance but very difficult to perform.
Probably a "dayang" or court lady / attendant, not a slave.

We did a version of the Singkil back in high school in the 1970's. I am elated that they still continue to show this excellent showcase of our beautiful history as a nation. Salamat po. Proud to be Filipino!

I can see that Russian cultural dance is very difficult to do, body movement like that is very hard to balance. While the difficult part of the Philippines is the bamboo dance(tinkling) but they're both good in their own way of style .
On this performance pareho lang naman po maganda walang lumamang. Pero Kung eh kumpara ang level of skills natin sa mga dances sa Russia? lamang talaga sila. Sa sayaw lang nato na Naka Releve ka it requires good balance ang strength sa mga paa at kahit sa ibang mga sayaw Nila like Katjusa, Kalinka at iba pa.
If I'm not mistaken, the Philippine group was Leyte Dance Theatre??? If they are indeed LDT then they are pros I would say since some of the dancers were instructors/professors in uni or just simply schoolmates of mine with extraordinary talent in dancing. Witnessed them having bruises and some heavy injuries just to master Singkil.
And srsly tho, the Russian group was too majestic. Never seen so slow but elegant dance. Actually, the slower the dance the harder for the whole body to coordinate. The Philippines was unto timing and complexity of steps, but the Russia was eerily precise it hurts. Lol.
In summarization, both are hard for a normal human being such as me.
Both BEAUTIFUL and MESMERISING. .period.

The Russians have good costume also but the Filipinos are the best dancers. They are graceful, talented and had won so many contests around the world. They have different style and type of dances also from different parts of their country .Congratulations Filipinos!

Philippines for me. The degree of execution is difficult. Even tha audience is clapping and the degree of seeing is really suspenseful. For the Russian is mere decipline of formation. Its plain and simple. You will be noticing only the color colorful costume but there is no promising point you will see in the dance. But these are cultural dances. They are what they are since. Copyrighted long long time ago.

Well, anyways, this is called folk dance/cultural dance means heritage of one's nation so you cant change the way theu dance it or perform tgats why it called cultural dance. everytime those bamboos stick together it feels like my heart skips a beat because i know that if you get out of sync your feet will get stuck between those and it hurts! their execution is very good!!
one will get a sprain from it because those bamboos are clapping quite hard. I know because I saw that happened to a co-dancer when I was doing folk dancing way back when. :) one always has to listen to the beat of the bamboos and know when they are about to close.
