This song contains the medieval side of ABBA. The flute melody is definitely medieval. The line in Latin: "Sub Luna Saltamus" (= We are dancing beneath the moon) is sung like it is a Gregorian chant; that kind of music you could hear in churches and monasteries several centuries ago. I can't help but think that when they released this album I had just finished my studies at the Classical Lyceum, where Latin was fundamental matter.
ABBA (Scandinavia) has Viking blood in them. The Vikings settled in the northern and mid regions of the UK around 860AD. I often hear a lot of Scottish and Irish in their music.
I'm so glad to see you again with More ABBA songs "The piper" (1980) It is a very nice song from "Super Trouper" album It has very interesting lyrics, I think it alludes to the Pied Piper of Hamelin Musically it is very creative, and although not exactly, I place it in the same group as "Eagle" & "Move on" (sounds seems like Andes music, from South América) And vocally it is of excellence, the choral part of Agnetha & Frida is powerful and glorious (including a phrase in latin) "The Piper" is very good, in my Top5 of these album, but it does not enter my Top 20 or 25 of all ABBA songs, it is that ABBA has even better songs, the bar is very high I send a big hug from my homeland Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷 South America
U never heard the kid's story 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin'??? That's the famous story this song was likely inspired by... the vocals were Agnetha and Frida harmonizing together... The story of the Piper who came to the town of Hamelin that was overrun by rats and mice... he offered the town's mayor to get rid of the pests for a monetary fee and the mayor agreed... The Piper played a melody on his flute and wandered through the town and all the rats and mice were drawn out and followed him... He took them to the town's river and changed the tune which led all the rodents to jump into the water and drowned them. The Piper went to collect his fee and the mayor refused to pay him and demanded that he leave town... As the Piper was leaving town, he started playing his flute and all the town's children followed him out of town where they disappeared into the side of a mountain... Only a disabled boy (or boys) who was slow to catch up found himself alone and went back to Hamelin to tell the folks that the Piper had taken all their children away.
The song's theme references the possible perils that a fascistic, seemingly enigmatic leader (The Piper - as in the Pied Piper of Hamelin) poses to society - as in 1930's Germany and many other societies.
I’ve always liked this song. Is definitely different. This was my first abba album right when it came out from there I got everything I could find. A great reaction again. A quick note as a thought for abba 50 year anniversary of Waterloo winning Eurovision.(which was was 50 years ago last week)Tommy Johansson from Sweden also did Waterloo tribute for it last week. Might like it. Granted it’s not Frida but it was something else. Thanks for another great abba reaction as only you do.
Thanks man for reacting to "The Piper". Bjorn has said it's a symbolic take on fascism and his fear of another leader like Hitler rising to power. The piper's instrument which initially drew them to him to help calm their imagined fears, eventually began representing fear in itself so in resolve, "they let him play, playing their minds away." Pretty heavy, right?
I know you get lot's of reaction suggestions, but one day I hope you'll react to Gonna sing you my love song from the 1974 Waterloo album. No video since it wasn't a single, but it's sung by Frida and the only song where Benny wrote the lyrics. Definitely a deep cut but sooo good! Oh, I love horror movies!
Love this song. It's got a great, catchy melody and the vocals are excellent by Agnetha and Frida. Although the song's lyrics may seem childish, about a Piper seducing the populace reminiscent of The Pied Piper of Hamelin, it has a much darker, sinister edge once scrutinized. There's also a medieval aspect to the music. It is an excellent song that is usually overlooked because it was never released as a single A-side but it is a quality song nonetheless.
Frrida is singing on a swedish popband called Ratatas local hit Så länge vi har varann also there is an english version called As long as we have each other
Flute sounds at least tin whistle. I have played this song many times using tin (penny) whistle as well many other famous songs that has flute or tin whistle. I love these songs that use that instrument.
Come pay tribute to the greatest pop group ever to grace us with their incredible talent. Song, is I believe, is based on 'The pied piper of Hamelin', who lured all the rats that over run the town to their death in the river.
Hey dude, nice to see you again. Hmm, I wonder what it is about the album cover you like so much 🤔wouldn't be the 🦵so deliciously on display? 🤣 I think this is a great tune and thanks for mentioning the band members who bring all these songs together. You saw most of them at the recent mini-concert you watched, including Lasse Wellander who had his 🦵🦵fondled by the girls in *that* video 😁😎
All Americans should pay close attention to this song. We have such a piper among us right now who is playing people's minds away. Pay attention, and don't follow the Orange one. Please America, wake up!
Hahaha! It also applies in the other way. Arent you also played by your own party why does it always have to be the orange man? Is it possible that you are being conned the globalist democrat elite establishment?
Not one of my faves from ABBA, but still a respectable effort .. I like the melody in the verses and the atmospheric build up, but for me the chorus is a bit of a let down .. It has a nursery rhyme feel to it, which is fair enough since there are song references to the children's tale, "The Pied Piper of Hamlin" .. But to me it doesn't deliver on the mystery and tension of the verses.
Only Abba could have created this masterpiece
inspiration is one thing, archetypes are another.
ABBA's music makes you feel good. Best voices of any pop band
Frida's voice is so tenderness and brilliant on this one... 😍
It's so good to see you again, Brooklyn... See you SOON ✌️
Love ❤️ from Chile 🇨🇱🤗👍
Always amazing!!! And good to see u as well!!!!!
PLEASE react to Move on. If you love this song as much, you will DEFINITELY love Move on. It's my all time fave Abba song ❤
A stunning, moving song that I've always loved. A song of life!

For me this song always had a Celtic feel to its sound
I'm so glad to see you again with More ABBA songs
"The piper" (1980)
It is a very nice song from "Super Trouper" album
It has very interesting lyrics, I think it alludes to the Pied Piper of Hamelin
Musically it is very creative, and although not exactly, I place it in the same group as "Eagle" & "Move on" (sounds seems like Andes music, from South América)
And vocally it is of excellence, the choral part of Agnetha & Frida is powerful and glorious (including a phrase in latin)
"The Piper" is very good, in my Top5 of these album, but it does not enter my Top 20 or 25 of all ABBA songs, it is that ABBA has even better songs, the bar is very high
I send a big hug from my homeland
Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷
South America
Both shared vocals on this. Such a great song.
But the beginning of every verse is Frida alone. Agnetha joins at 'came to hear him play, play their minds away'.
This one one of my favourite ABBA songs, nice reaction bro.
Thank u

Björn says The song was inspired Stephen King’s book ‘The Stand’.
I swear when I listen to the song I hear them say "so they let him play, play their *mice* away" - have a listen 🙂
@@darrenbertram7289 haha. ‘Play their minds away’. But now I’ll forever hear mice! 🤣

One evil = Putin.
Trump 😅😊
👏👏👏💓💓💓 One of ABBA's fairy tales.
If you liked this song I’m sure you’ll love ‘Soldiers’. Great song.

You welcome brother!
I believe the song is based on a tale called The Piper of Hamelin
The Pied Piper if Hamlin.
Teh Pied Piper of Hamlin
Please react to I am the city. One of the last ABBA songs recorded in May 1982
Abba can do no wrong!
haunted by the chicks' harmonies! :-)

Sounds good night have to check that out!
when the two ladies share the lead, like they do on this song, it is often referred to as "the third voice"
Only ABBA could put Latein Language in a Pop Song , over a decade later Enigma was dit it again
Bjorn was inspired to write this after reading The Stand by Stephen King.

Beeing seducted by fascists is not childish.
Wow 🤩
Hello there 🙋♀️❤ good to see you! I guess the piper is a metafor for people following a leader..
Hey!! ❤ ..maybe lol

Isn't a piper the Flute player? BTW it's Frida on lead vocal.
Por que ahora hacen estos videos?
Knowing you're a huge Frida fan, check out this video from her pre-ABBA days--1967: ruclips.net/video/F78pl0wAUDc/видео.html.
