This is Abba.Deceptively simple but thoughtful and super complicated.

"The Piper" is a Celtic / Baroque pop song - It's evolved from the similar folk music that's shared between Ireland / Scotland and the Nordic countries (I guess the Viking invasions had something to do with it).
It follows the famous story of the "Pied Piper of Hamelin" (Pan Piper or Rat-Catcher of Hamelin) - a legend that dates back to the Middle Ages from the town of Hamelin (Germany) - but it also represents Fascism. ✌
🎵He gave them a dream / He seduced everybody in the land 🎵
🎵The fire in his eyes / And the fear was a weapon in his hand 🎵

A lot of people did not like this song but I loved this mediaeval jjig.
Its captivating, melodic and sinister all wrapped up with beautiful harmonies and a touch of Latin.😊

Not I'm heard, just not a hit or released as single. I've even heard it once played from the radio.

The first time I heard this song, I was weirded out (I was only 12, mind you). But over the years I came to realize that it is a masterpiece that combines simplicity and depth as well as ominousness and glee for maximum effect. Today, it is one of my favorite ABBA-tunes. Also, I am making this next line my standard sign-off: Keep up the great work!

Fantastic song. I always thought of it as one of their best because once again they covered a totally different style and did it beautifully. 40 years later ABBA’S music is just as popular as ever , new music topping charts and winning awards. Yes ABBA are the Pied Pipers of Pop Music. Up next is Lay All Your Love On Me, one of the great dance tracks ever written.
Interested to see if you agree with me Matt. Thank you sir for the reactions! 👍

As a fellow punk, it’s cool to see some fellow minded people get into Abba like I do. Makes me realize I’m not the only punk who gets into it. Always like your reviews!

Nice, I love that! And yeah, I've been described before as a "musical omnivore," so I find interest in things as diverse as classical music, acid techno, punk rock, and ABBA (and much else beyond that). So big ups to a fellow musical traveler.

I'm so glad to see you again with more ABBA songs in our ABBA Journey
    "The piper" (1980)
It is a very nice song from "Super Trouper" album
8pts in my taste, in my Top5 of the album
It has very interesting lyrics, I think it alludes to the Pied Piper of Hamelin
also an encrypted reference to the harmful totalitarian or autocratic political leaders
still valid today, more than 40 years later
(unfortunately my country is an example of this,
that we still have Flutists and people who continue to be godlike to the leader)
Musically it is very creative, and although not exactly,
I place it in the same group as "Eagle" & "Move on"
(sounds seems like Andes music, from South América)
And vocally it is of excellence,
begining with a soolo verses by Frida
then the choral part of Agnetha & Frida is powerful and glorious
    including a phrase in latin
(fifth language in which ABBA sing, even if it is a single phrase)
    "The Piper" is very good,
but it does not enter my Top 20 or 25,
it is that ABBA has even better songs,
    the bar is very high
See you in the next track
I send a big hug from my homeland
    Buenos Aires, Argentina 🇦🇷
    South America

a remarkable track (even in ABBA's versatile catalog!), incredibly well suited to the lyrics (but Bjorn always writes on an almost finished track, to get the vibe and message 'hidden in the music'!) I like the latin choir parts the most in this song

Such a fab song. I think the last three songs on the original album release (this being the first of the three) sum them up really well: high melody, melancholic and anthemic.

A mixture of the origins of The Pied Piper Of Hamelin and both the danger and rise of the 20th century charismatic figure who will end up bringing ruin to all. Been quite a few of those lately.
The flutes were added later and I suppose one argument might be the song doesn't know what it wants to be. A commentary on the dangers of the demigods of our time or a jaunty court pantomime by the Kings minstrel players.
It's sort of both but does it gel together?

  • @Pulsar77

A fun folksy tune in the same vein as arrival. I think this is also one of the last songs where Frida and Agnetha both sing the entire song, with no lead vocalist. Which is also a sign of things to come; on The Visitors, they often recorded their parts separately. The beginning of the end...

some new data for your ABBA playlist, with a correction or rectification
"The Piper" is the 42nd song to surpass 1000 views
and with it, the album "Super Trouper" now has all its songs surpassing 1000 views,
it is the second to achieve it (after "The Album")
    and my rectification here...
I was wrong to say that the album "Super Trouper"
was already the one that had the most accumulated views,
because I added a song from the bonus track wrong
(I evaluate the albums as they were originally released,
    without the bonus tracks,
that I count all separately along with the single songs)
so in the accumulated albums, the order to today is
    Voulez vous
    The Album
    Super Trouper
    Arrival
    ABBA
    Ring Ring
    Waterloo
(by average views it is still first "The Album")
and the last fact, but very important
Probably for being the opening video of your ABBA playlist,
but now Ring Ring is #10 in the Top10 of all your videos
and in the Top 25 are included
    #18 S.O.S.
    #19 As good as new
#21 The winner takes it all
    #22 Knowing me knowing you
    #23 Eagle
#24 Thank you for the music
this is the intensity level of ABBA songs on your channel
    thanks for all dear Matt
I wish you a greatest weekend from
    Buenos Aires, Argentina
    South America

I never thought about it this way, but the opening verse is lush with sonics, the chorus though is not, its a choppy sing-songy melody that is in contrast to the rest of the song, but the chorus is from the pov from those under the influence of the piper. Maybe ABBA was talking about the music industry.

Goes without saying. Love your deconstruction, insight & intelligence. That is a weird 'saying'. Can we 'say' it without 'saying' it?..Oh deary me😵
Totally non music related. Since my first viewing of you, I watched you 'scooting' around on your chair, so I guessed you were on a chair with wheels & holding your mug of 'tea' as I notice a tea bag? label hanging over your mug & being carefull not to spill it... Now I see you have Lucca (the luckiest cat in the world😉) on your lap & trying not to disturb her as well. Well done Matt👍👍

Haha, yup, it's Earl Grey tea. And yes, it's a wheeled computer-chair that Lucca is slowly devouring, lol (she's biting off bits of the arm-rests, and it's starting to get ridiculous). But cheers, really appreciate the kind words, and that folks like yourself are part of all these journeys. :)
