Too bad there wasn't enough time to show the fight Bass took to free Solomon. For example: "Bass was prepared to go a step further; he told Northup that he would go to New York State himself, in order to find someone who could assist. Bass was determined to help Northup get released "
The fact that people are getting upset because they think that Brad Pitt had to come in as the ‘White Savior’ just shows how ignorant and little they know the story. Even Solomon Northrup would give all credit of his restored freedom to Samuel Bass in his memoir. It also shows how little people actually consider how much power the masters and overseers had over their slaves at the time. So, NO, Mr Northrup’s chances of actually fighting for his freedom and getting out alive were VERY SLIM. It’s rather exhausting to see people just too stupid to understand that this story between Mr Northrup and Mr Bass isn’t one of cliche, but a story of one man doing the right thing to free another. THIS WAS A TRUE STORY PEOPLE! And Mr Northrup would always say to his dying breathe that Mr Bass was indeed his savior. If you were in Mr Northrup’s shoes, you wouldn’t care if Mr Bass was White, Yellow, or even Purple, all that mattered was that someone heard his story and his pleas for help and that this man chose to do what was right and even risk himself to make sure that Mr Northrup’s chains were broken. I love how you can see Mr Northrup fighting back tears of pure relief and joy. Like Finally, someone has heard him. Finally, someone is doing something to make things right. God bless you Samuel Bass, for doing what we all should do for our fellow man. Not seeing skin color, but a human bonded in chains pleading for help.
@hambone31000 Bass actually didn't travel outside of Louisiana: He just wrote the letter to Henry Northup, using a careful level of anonymity to conceal his identity, because he could have been criminally prosecuted under the Fugitive Slave Act. Once Henry Northup arrived, he deciphered who and where Bass was, and then Bass told him Solomon was on Epps' Plantation.
FACTS.I agree that the white savior trope is problematic and this is not an example of it at all.Like you said this is REALLY happened. Also only a free white guy would’ve been able to help Solomon here.No white slave owner would ever have a free black guy as a hired hand in his plantation. That would give the slaves too much idea of freedom.
This scene really gets you when you can see the sheer raw emotion in Solomon's eyes -- acted out masterfully by Chiwetel Ejiofor. He is thankful and grateful beyond words, and because of Epps coming back around, he cannot even utter them.
I was kinda shocked how accurate this film was in accordance with the book. I just wish the film showed when he finally got his freedom what he went through in court to get justice and how he went on sort of a speaking tour calling out the evils of slavery.
Producing rights doesn't necessarily mean he personally bank rolled the movie or whatever. It could've been agreed in his contract as part of a payment option. There is no conspiracy, Brad Pitt agreed to do this project not for ego or himself, maybe it's because he genuinely believes in this movie's message in that Slavery is a mistake and America should damn well never forget the injustice the African Americans had to go through. Don't forget, Pitt also played a role in that movie about Tibet. Subsequently, he was also banned from China too.

I like how having Patrick Bateman as your profile pic immediately makes you sympathetic to a serial killer, as if the story of American Psycho was supposed to idolize Bateman in any way, or that having a fictional serial killer as a profile picture would make your argument that starting a slave revolt in the Antebellum South would be a bad idea. Slave revolts happened, and weren't successful. If he burned down the house, he'd probably be killed.
