Madeline Goddard is a smart young woman who owns a fashionable dress shop in neutral Sweden during World War One. Though she is grateful to avoid the fighting, the courageous and stunningly pretty Madeline feels she should be doing more for her native France. When she volunteers to work as an intelligence agent, Madeline's activities are so successful that British intelligence soon comes to rely on her as their main pipeline for information. A British official in Sweden asks her to cultivate the friendship of Baron Karl Von Marwitz, a tall, distinguished-looking German officer who is in charge of counter-espionage activities at the German embassy. Unknown to Madeline, the baron has been sent to Sweden for the express purpose of discovering and eliminating the top British spy who has been smuggling out German war plans. When Madeline and Karl meet, each recognizes the other as a deadly foe. But a smoldering attraction seems to grow each time they see each other.

First of all,
Vivien Leigh graces every film she is in with her beauty, prodigious talent, intelligence, and something that gives out empathy and attracts ours.
It is so interesting that a movie made that long ago has tons more entertainment value than the ones that are made now.
Great film with the late beautiful Vivien Leigh but needs to be digitally remastered for more cinematic clarity i.e. cinematography and for better clearer sound! Thanks for posting~❤❤ Cheers~ 🍺
I love the old saga's its funny and cool. The eyes know all. Vivien she had beautiful eyes she did. Great flick love the music so dramatic!

What a beautifully crafted film of Great War espionage. The last comment from the British captain to the head of the German spy-ring was perfect!

Hitler? Hitler was a only Corporal in the German Army when this movie takes place. The Kaiser was ruling Germany then, and nobody ever heard of Hitler or the Nazis. This is about World War One - not Two.

Lajos Biró wrote the ending as fairly ambiguous. The outcome was purposely left to the imagination and depends on whether one is rather cynical 😐, or a hopeless romantic 🥰
