My dad always said "it's not the initial cost of being married to a woman its the up keep that will get you". My parents have been debt free since 1972 and just returned from a trip. They saved like no one else and still are.

Many women don’t show that side of themselves until married.
She is right you should enjoy your money but she does not have any. She is minus 100k.
So as long as you at least make minimum payments on your loans, or more importantly, paying extra than the minimum, you can’t ever take a vacation? Nobody is going to go their entire 20s without taking at least a small trip somewhere. Student loans or no student loans. With your logic, you can never take a vacation until your mortgage is paid off.

The baby steps are not for everyone. This helps highlight being on different pages financially and might not be compatiable
I can't stand that "I deserve it" mentality. You deserve it when you've worked hard and paid for it.
I love Dave's factual bluntness.
My water heater went out, $1,400. Took my car to have the transmission serviced $225. Knowing that I payed cash for all of it because I was able to silence the inner child priceless. Just like Dave keeps saying, when life presented me with these obstacles they were just inconvenient line items on an expense report.

When my friend was telling me about his 15 condo rentals in Hawaii years ago I asked questions and took notes.

Her spending, if anything, will even increase drastically more, since his income and now her income for her to spend (even more) as well…”OURS”. Going to college and piling up student 👩🎓 loan is one of the problems here, not that going on one ☝️ vacation with her girls will make a BIG difference in her $100k student loan.
A bigger problem is; I don’t think they’re very compatible financially…….if they’re looking to get married legally. Marriage as an institution is also a business, you have to go into it with your eyes 👀 open.

As much as I tend to agree with Ramsey mentality, I wish I had taken some trips before having kids, because it is a much different thing to take trips after kids. Dave saying he can have fun now as much as he wants, is not the same for most of the "net worth millionaires" he always talks about. They can't do what he can for taking grand kids on trips, and even if you can afford to do that, it's still not the same as planning it and actually enjoying the vacation in the same way. You're not taking 10 mile natures hikes through Hawaii with kids under 10.

They are on completely opposite ends of the spectrum financially. He almost has his house paid off while she hasn't even started paying off student loans. No idea what she makes but she could have easily interpreted his comment to not go as 'you shouldn't see your friends or have fun for 3-4 years'. Can't blame her for going at that point.

So you owe $100k in student loans. A roundtrip ticket may easily be $300, and u stay at friend's house and just pay for eating out. So you can't spend $300 to visit friends or family if you have student loan debt? Mind you, it may take you 5-10 years to pay that off depending on income...idk if I agree with this one. I don't think it makes her a child either.

I’m a little torn in this one. We don’t know her income or her overall level of responsibility. When my wife and I were digging ourselves out of debt we agreed that I’d keep my hobby budget and she’d keep her annual girls trip. Not the smartest thing financially but it kept us sane. These days were are debt free and I’m still in constant savings mode while she leans more towards YOLO. The two personalities actually help keep each other in check. I keep reminding her to save and she reminds me that I’m at a spot where we can enjoy some of our money.

Very disappointed in Dave and Deloney. The guy is using them as a cudgel to control her. He said they are going through Financial Peace. It sounds like she is newly on board, and I don't think name calling her is going to make her want to continue with the program. People need time to come on board. I also noticed that he only spoke of the student loan debt and didn't say she was putting the trip on a CC, didn't speak of any debt she may have already paid down, etc. He is painting her in a bad light and SHE should run...

I've heard many stories from oldsters that regret not living when they were young...I also heard my 90yo grandmother lament that she had few resources left because of a YOLO lifestyle after 40. Which regret do you want to die with. Her end came several years early because she was reliant on the system.

I Think it depends on all her other expenses, and the way she handles money. One trip, especially if it is done in an economic fashion, is fine. but you have to judge the overall behaviour of a person.
