I think the reason this is so significant for me is because my sister was born with a congenital, incurable disease in 1950 (cystic fibrosis) and she often talked about that scene in the Hollywood masterpiece, The Robe (staring Richard Burton, Jean Simmons and Victor Mature, among many other greats). In one scene, a young beautiful woman, Miriam (Betta St. John.and oh gosh, she is still alive in 2018), gave her testimony to Roman tribune Gallio (Burton).
It went like this: She was a paralytic and known as the most hateful, bitter woman in town, shunned by all, shouting obscenities to people who crossed her path. One day, Jesus visited her town and healed many people. He spoke with her also, in private, but when he left, she was still paralyzed. Gallio was angry at that thought but Miriam explained that she was a changed person in her heart and now a most beloved member of the community, singing beautiful songs of love and deliverance to all the people.
She believed Jesus left her like that so as to witness what true healing means to a hurting world.
The story is fictitious, as I was later to find out many months after my sister died, but the point of it was essential in understanding the true transformation by God and to know that if physical healing doesn't occur, that doesn't mean God thinks us unworthy of it. My sister Cheryl said she and people like her of any and all physical challenges were important messengers in that respect. She said that often and I'll never forget the message of it. I just love that! And I love the thought that something like this may actually have happened taking John 21:25 at its word.

pastor chuck smith used to say after his father and brother were killed in a plane accident " dont ever trade what you do know about God for what you dont know. ....God is good, He loved us enough to send His Son, He has a home for us in Eternity, and Praise God, this is not our final destination. ....thankyou for sharing your testimony with us...God bless you and give you the strength you need for each moment

What is the purpose of scars? We may have physical scars or we may have emotional scars. Why? Why do things heal the way they do? Why the disfigurement? Why the numbness and pain? Why the ongoing hurt of a raw tear in the soul? If God made the body and soul to mend, why didn't He make it mend back together completely and perfectly like it was before?
Answer: Because God has a purpose for scars. God has a purpose for them like He has a purpose for words and for miracles.
    GOD'S PURPOSE FOR WORDS
Rom 10:14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher?
But not all believe through words alone.
    GOD'S PURPOSE FOR MIRACLES
John 4:48 So Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you simply will not believe."
But not all believe through words and miracles alone.
    GOD'S PURPOSE FOR SCARS
After 3 years of listening to Jesus and watching Him do miracles, Thomas still would not believe. He could not shake his own skepticism; he could not become skeptical of his own skepticism. Sin held a tight grip on him. But God loved him dearly because God loves all people, including skeptics, very much. Therefore, before time began and with divine wisdom and foresight, God made wounds heal the way they do. We may cover them up and hide them and bury the pain, but God has a divine purpose for them. When words fail to do their job, and when miracles fail to do their job, scars may be used. Scars and hurts and pain are weapons of God used against all unbelief.
Did Jesus feel numbness? Did He feel residual pain? Did He feel the tear of His soul when He remembered how His scars got on His body? Did He have flashbacks to the pain of betrayal and all the hurt that hatred brings? Like us, would He rather hide His ugly marks and forget these things?
I think He would, but His love for the skeptic and the doubter and the unbeliever, along with His understanding of the purpose of scars, caused Him to set those unpleasant feelings aside, roll up His sleeves, and pointed to them. By doing this He propelled a force that goes beyond words and beyond miracles, a force that rubbed Thomas' nose in reality. Thomas could no longer deny Jesus' love or the truthfulness of His message.
John 20:27 Then He said to Thomas, "Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing."
John 20:28 Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!"
Your scars are the gateway to places in the heart where all others have fallen short in their attempt to convey the love of Christ.
Rom 5:6-11 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.

We praise God for your heart and witness to His grace. God is using you more than you'll probably ever know. He takes care of our impact on lives that need what He has worked into each of our lives. Your message is so tender and encouraging for anyone going through any kind of hurt. Sometimes the cross He leads us to is bitter sweet, but it is sweet in the end. No one can forget your spirit. I share your videos with everyone. Our students are greatly impacted by yours and Ginny's lives. We love you both.

Thank you Steve for yet another thought provoking video of your post-accident journey. I am moved by your encouragement to refrain from covering up our scars, and to use them instead to show the wounded that recovery is possible.

I will sit by you when you fly!!! God has put you and your family in my heart and mind since I was in gr.5 when I first read Jungle Pilot. I had always dreamed of going on missions to another country and after serving in local missions for the past 25 years. God blessed me with my first trip to Egbe, Nigeria. You continue to inspire, as I have written my own walking His trail since I was in high school, and to this day. I am walking on an amazing trail right now, so thank you for the encouragement and I pray that I can and have encouraged others as you have and continue to do.

It is always so nice to see your updates and continue having a glimpse into your recovery process. Thank you for being so transparent and for your willingness to share what this has all been like. Your ability and capability of putting that in a format (videos) is really an awesome resource for many of us that are advocates for Patient/Family Centered Care groups.
