The reason the biopics that work DO actually work is because the directors and actors who work on them have some level of admiration for their subject. For example, "The Wolf of Wall Street" works because Scorsese and Leo admire the drive and cunning genius of Belfort while also recognizing his abundant flaws. The reason a Trump biopic just can't work right now (or for the foreseeable future as well) is because practically no one in Hollywood with the talent to make a great biopic has anything but scorn, contempt, and utter hatred for everything about Trump. You can't make a great biopic about a person who you can't bring yourself to portray as anything other than pure evil, and for whom you can find no joy or entertainment in their successes. Great biopics, like all great stories, thrive on their portrayals of rises and falls. If the rises aren't entertaining, fun, and celebratory, the falls lose their impact as well. But no one in Hollywood right now with the capacity to make a great biopic could possibly stomach even attempting to find any entertainment, fun, or joy in any of Trump's successes. That's why this movie fails. I know it has an 80% on RT, but that's only because it's definitively anti-Trump, which MOST film critics also are, so they are predisposed to view the film through rose-tinted glasses.
seriously, what's to like or admire about him? i think the best any screenwriter or director could do is pity him, conservative creators excepted of course (have u seen "reagan"? yuck)
@@snortworld Well, until the 2010s, he was admired by almost everyone in the entertainment industry (especially by rappers). If you don't think there is ANYTHING admirable about Trump, I think you are letting your bias get in the way. Even the very worst political figures in history have at least some admirable traits. I'd rather a biopic tell the truth rather than manufacture drama or make the protagonist look good. I like this movie because it didn't have the cliche moments every biopic has.
They implied that Trump and his lawyer had some kind of flirtation or attraction or homoerotic relationship which is all projection. The political journalist who wrote the movie said that Cohns lovers “resembled” Trump. Umm. So???? It’s just silly at this point how far they’ll go to make him and anyone that votes for him mad. The scene where he assaulted his wife was also irresponsible. She accused him during a nasty divorce and later on recanted the accusation in 2015 and she had nothing to gain from doing so.
So Hollywood made a film about the villain arc of Donald Trump. How totally shocking, unexpected and brave. I have tears in my eyes. Were Robert de Niro and Meryl Streep involved? Just checking because I have no idea if they like him or not. They're so mysterious! Anyway, I'm sure the film will get terrible reviews from critics and media in general, given that they're totally not a hivemind when it comes to their political views. Thanks for the review!
I'm fascinated by character studies in which the main protagonist loses more and more humanity while becoming more successful and rich. This movie fits perfectly into this category. Trump is not very likeable from the beginning but at least he has some compassion for his brother, considered the black sheep of the family and a loser. But after he meets Roy Cohn, which takes him under his wig, he upstages him in bullying and arrogance, to the point that, surprisingly, I felt a bit of empathy for Roy Cohn , especially when he's treated like a leper by Trump because he has AIDS. Jeremy Strong definitely deserves an Oscar nomination. Maria Bakalova also manages to depict a three dimensional woman with a strong personality, which of course Trump sees as a menace to his ego.I also really liked the cinematography: in the first half the look reminded me of scummy New York in Taxi Driver and Midnight Cowboy, but then they apply a VHS filter, which is supposed to represent, visually, the dehumanization of Donald Trump turning into a monster. In fact, the all movie is basically a modern retelling of the Frankenstein's monster.
I think what you said about “who is this for?” is the whole thing. I think any Trump movie may be pointless because at this time, 99.9% of people have a cemented opinion of Trump so I’m not sure who this, or any Trump movie would sway.
People's political biases absolutely influences their media analysis, so I would actually prefer it if reviewers were up front about their politixs from the get go. I get that they don't want to turn away potential viewers from a certain side, but I think it shows far more integrity to be open and honest about what their biases are
I think it would have been good to show more of his relationship with his father and how that shaped his personality, especially his drives and insecurities. It could have fleshed out the psychological aspect of his arc through the movie, and strengthened what is already one of the movie's strong suits; which is as you said in no small part to Sebastian Stan's acting. It would have also lent more weight to the scene where he kind of gets the upper hand on his dad for the first time.
when you think of it that Sebastian Stan is now an actor among actors unlike his Cap Steve Rogers Chris Evans who lacks in these kinds of movies under his belt. He's in same spot as the former Hulk actor Norm and the new Hulk glass actor with Samantha and RDJ too in that realm of acting. The guy blooms in his craft, props to him👏
A couple of years ago, the Hollywood Reporter asked a whole table of filmmakers how they would handle a Trump biopic. Bo Burnham had an interesting take: show the small quiet moments when he is alone and the cameras aren’t on him. I wonder if this movie does that?
@@HBarnillhe’s probably thinking about his kids or grandkids. I'm pretty neutral about Trump, but as a film, I thought it was pretty good. The acting was strong, the pacing solid, and the storytelling approach was interesting. I kept wondering how much was real and how much was dramatized. The early parts, especially, captured how a person's journey can unfold- that idea of dying a hero or living long enough to see yourself become the villain. All in all, I think it was a compelling character study, regardless of the man it's portraying. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more attention. It's almost as if people are avoiding the controversy. The film seemed to capture something genuine about human complexity. The way it showed different sides felt authentic. Everyone involved did an impressive job, and for reasons I can't fully explain, it connected with me. Maybe that says something about me, maybe not, but it felt like a thoughtful film.
Deepfocus, in one sentence you said exactly how I see Donald Trump that nobody in all these years have even come close: "What the film fails to understand about... I think this movies perfect audience is for people that don’t have US politics forced down their throats 24/7. For someone like m who doesn’t live in America you see a lot of Trump respect especially. From older people, just because of the man he is and his “love” for “traditional values”. This movie offers an incite to the man trump really is without over indulging and making it seem like a hate job. 6:37 They were most likely just ready to cash in and move on. Probably figured there's other interesting angles they could explore if they ever wanted to come back to the subject (definitely now at this point).
Sebastian Stan’s performance came across as Jimmy Fallon doing an impression of Jerry Seinfeld doing an impression of Trump, VERY distracting at times. Also, not a fan of the VHS/film grain look. But I actually enjoyed the writing, acting and angle of the film though.
I only partly understand your criticism, maybe the movie could have gone deeper into the development of the connection between Trump and Cohn. But is there really more than shown? In my opinion the movie does make the point you make at @5:40 Because I think the movie asks the question whether you will stay human if it is demonstated that being inhumane (unconditionally follow the 3 rules: attack, always deny, never admit defeat) gets results. And that is some of the deepest impact a film can have. And I think the movie exactly shows where Trump comes from: - Rich but demanding and dismissive family (see the fate of his brother) - Wanting to have something of his own (not just collecting rent for his father but envisioning the hotel) - No moderation (thinking too big with the hotel and the enterprises in Atlantic City) - Learning the three ground rules from a strong, captivating but crooked role model And then applying these rules zealously to everything (business) and everyone (his wife and even his teacher Cohn) in his life. To me this is a great origin story and explains everything Trump does.
@@Cyrilla_123 exactly. Weird, fantastic, and heartbreaking. One of the 10 best films of the last decade, no doubt. And Holy Spider is very good too. Ali Abbasi is one of the best directors of this century.
@@RSimoes10agreed, Holy Spider was also great. I do have more critiques for it than I had for Border, but overall, it’s an important film. I’m not one to usually flinch from gore or violence, but this movie def pushed the limits. I can appreciate Abbasi wanting to demonstrate the brutality, but also feel a way about portraying excessive violence against women. Nevertheless, a controversial topic should get a controversial film and I’m glad it wasn’t watered down (that I know of). And even though it takes place in Iran, it’s a cautionary tale that can (and has) happen anywhere. I also applaud the actors who worked on it despite the consequences they could have faced.
6:40 I think some people that were involved in the push to release the film today think that trivializing Trump’s life, calling him “an apprentice” and trailers will be enough of an impact. Especially if it’d be a close one again
This is by no means by necessary a pro-Trump movie. And that’s why I like it. Exploitation of course Scorsese elements you added actually is the reason why I like this film and enjoyed it a lot. One of my favorite films
You have to go into the film with an open mind, otherwise you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. No matter what your views are on Trump, it’s still a good character study. But never got the feeling they were trying to jeopardize Trump’s campaign. The film doesn’t make or break his character. Ps. I appreciate that you like Watchmen!
Border was a unique film by the director, but no way am I wasting time on this. I’m old enough to remember when Trump became famous in the 80’s for being a trust-fund playboy. He was a joke then, now he’s just deranged, and more dangerous.
I enjoyed it. The filmmaker definitely had a bias which is fine. Was kind of turned off before seeing it bc he was extremely active on twitter always tagging Trump and being inflammatory. Which i kinda dont like from the author of a work. Prefer the Lynch model of just letting your art speak and not meme-ifying it. But its a good movie. Great crafts. Love the different flourishes in the cinematography to make it feel lived in and authentic. Jeremy Strong was dominating in the beginning but then Sebastian Stan took over later on.
I find myself, which is rare, not agreeing with your general thoughts on this. I liked it, thought it was both directed (Ali Abbasi is a very good director, also enjoyed Holy Spider) and acted well.
Enjoyed your reviews for some time, but my first comment concerns your commissioned artwork. To confirm, we can send questions to your site...thanks...
I clicked "LIKE" before listening, not wanting my bias to affect my appreciation. I was not disappointed because I had already detached stupid politics from the tier where art exists, and art commentary exists. Thanks.
Acting was fantastic, plot was weird, and just unsubstantiated scenes that felt like too much fiction to the point it's not immersive anymore, ie: rape, walking in on a gay orgy, etc.
Pure going through the motions. The movie’s pitch for a positive review is a couple three dimensional performances and better than TV movie cinematography, but what a yawner it is.
This film is tepid and lacklustre, lacking any personal touch. Abbasi entered the project quite late. It's hard to imagine a more bland work. It felt like a TV movie.
This movie and its release date both scream propaganda to me. It’s also mean-spirited. To paint a complete picture of someone you have to either know them personally or consult with their friends/family. For them to show an assault on Ivanna as if it positively DID happen, when the accusation was made during a nasty divorce, and she retracted the accusation before she died, it’s just gross. They could’ve at least given him the benefit of doubt and showed it to be questionable or alluded to it in a different way. This just painted him as a monster. Which I expected. We can’t have people thinking the man has a soul.
She’s trying to be technical on her review. The journey of the characters & the transformation is too paced. It doesn’t pace itself you see sudden changes in clunks until you see the Trump of today.
Who could’ve thought Hollywood would make a one dimensional caricature of Trump? Not a Trump fan by any means but if a director absolutely despises and has no empathy for their lead character, I don’t see how you could make a compelling narrative or a good movie out of that.
You are way off on this one... As someone who never voted or ever will, I was engrossed and entertained throughout the film. I also immediately thought of Dr. Frankenstein and thought it was a brilliant way of portraying his birth, his origin. The creators went out of their way to humanize him the best they could. The idea that there needs to be a balance on how you portray someone because everyone is good and evil is politicized. Some people suffer from pathologies that render them unempathetic and megalomaniacal. I've followed Trump, the person, for decades and never fully understood his behavior up until finishing the film. This is an important movie, one that will resonate beyond his lifetime.
She’s smart and sexy. But when she recently used the word “lysergic” as a synonym for “psychedelic,” that was a little too much. It’s like corporatespeak, but instead it’s pretentiousarthousespeak
actually i agree with the reviewer - yes trump is vile and corrupt - but we are all vile and corrupt, therefore trump is admirable and likeable, because he shows us that there's nothing wrong with being shit because everyone is shit! it's so inspirational. :)
Imagine having to study Trump long enough to pick up on his "subtle" mannerisms and then take on those repulsive characteristics as your own for a performance.
Many don’t find him repulsive. Even at the Al Smith dinner when Trump was talking about giving chuck schumer his first check decades ago (Chuck by all accounts and his own admission “hates” Trump the politician) they looked like old buddies reuniting. His interpersonal interactions seem to be very warm and positive and nothing like his interactions with the media or podium speeches. Studying a person like that would be impossible without getting to know him personally as his stage persona is completely different from his actual personality.

6:37 They were most likely just ready to cash in and move on. Probably figured there's other interesting angles they could explore if they ever wanted to come back to the subject (definitely now at this point).
I thought it was scorching. I was never bored. Powerful imo.
In my opinion the movie does make the point you make at @5:40
Because I think the movie asks the question whether you will stay human if it is demonstated that being inhumane (unconditionally follow the 3 rules: attack, always deny, never admit defeat) gets results. And that is some of the deepest impact a film can have.
And I think the movie exactly shows where Trump comes from:
- Rich but demanding and dismissive family (see the fate of his brother)
- Wanting to have something of his own (not just collecting rent for his father but envisioning the hotel)
- No moderation (thinking too big with the hotel and the enterprises in Atlantic City)
- Learning the three ground rules from a strong, captivating but crooked role model
And then applying these rules zealously to everything (business) and everyone (his wife and even his teacher Cohn) in his life.
To me this is a great origin story and explains everything Trump does.
You can’t talk about Ali Abassi as a weak director, he’s brilliant. Have you seen Border? Masterpiece.
Border was on my favorites list for a good min. I think I teared up a couple times during it. It’s weird, it’s fantastic, and its heartbreaking
No, it's not, and Holy Spider was really bad.
Holy Spider too!
You probably get this question from time to time but how did you decide on sitting on the floor to do your reviews? Just curious
I went to your insta and got spooked (it’s 4 am here)
can you review monster 2023? curious about what you think
Im in love with this channel
6:40
I think some people that were involved in the push to release the film today think that trivializing Trump’s life, calling him “an apprentice” and trailers will be enough of an impact. Especially if it’d be a close one again
And she has time to look at comments and heart them 😅😅
I'm sure this is a fair representation and it isn't gay at all. 😂
Imagine being such a clown that you think 'gay' is an insult -_-
@@M.H.I.A.F.T. No the movie is literally gay and a character having HIV is a subplot.
😅😅😅
Can someone who has seen the film answer me this:
Was that Cohn's hand touching/rubbing Trump's thigh under the table?
Frankenstein meets Wall Street, it about time !
Best movie ive seen this year
Have you seen the film I Origins? Been stuck in my mind lately, would love to know what you think! Appreciate your insights into cinema
This is by no means by necessary a pro-Trump movie.
And that’s why I like it. Exploitation of course Scorsese elements you added actually is the reason why I like this film and enjoyed it a lot. One of my favorite films
Waiting for you to review Anora ❤
You have to go into the film with an open mind, otherwise you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. No matter what your views are on Trump, it’s still a good character study. But never got the feeling they were trying to jeopardize Trump’s campaign. The film doesn’t make or break his character. Ps. I appreciate that you like Watchmen!
Border was a unique film by the director, but no way am I wasting time on this. I’m old enough to remember when Trump became famous in the 80’s for being a trust-fund playboy. He was a joke then, now he’s just deranged, and more dangerous.
Great film although i mostly disagree on her take. The 2 leads were amazing though
It’s been censored
And where can you watch this
another fantastic review, thank you
Thanks. I'm seeing it tonight purely out of curiosity.
I must admit I had a blast with this movie.
Review terrifier 3!
Great as always
Oh I thought the entire movie was supposed to be about Roy Cohn through the lens
Not my idea of entertainment. Would have liked to of seen Robert De Niro play him.
Enjoyed your reviews for some time, but my first comment concerns your commissioned artwork. To confirm, we can send questions to your site...thanks...
Shoot me an email! It's in the description box.
I wonder how it compares to Oliver Stone’s W
I clicked "LIKE" before listening, not wanting my bias to affect my appreciation. I was not disappointed because I had already detached stupid politics from the tier where art exists, and art commentary exists. Thanks.
0 out 10. It was nothing like the TV show.
Acting was fantastic, plot was weird, and just unsubstantiated scenes that felt like too much fiction to the point it's not immersive anymore, ie: rape, walking in on a gay orgy, etc.
The Great White Hope won 🙋♂️🙋♂️🙋♂️
Love hearing you talk about films, even ones not on my radar! Excellent analysis as usual. Sorry it wasn't great, stay badass and beautiful! 🔥💪❤️
I think yhe film is very good, Nuanced. I'm from Europe, where people don't even know who Ivana Trump is.
Pure going through the motions. The movie’s pitch for a positive review is a couple three dimensional performances and better than TV movie cinematography, but what a yawner it is.
This was a better Joker film that that shit we got the other week
Enjoyable movie but not factually correct or accurate
This film is tepid and lacklustre, lacking any personal touch. Abbasi entered the project quite late. It's hard to imagine a more bland work. It felt like a TV movie.
Need Anora review
You're a gift to the world. Thanks for the thoughtful analysis, as always.
I would've seen this in theaters if it actually came to any near me. I guess I'll just have to pirate it. Fail!
I think it streams Nov. 1
Its called propaganda and we have the gall to point at Russia, oh the shame.
The movie is in a bad place. People in the cult will not see it and people who hate him have already had enough.
I'm in the Cult of paying less for EVERYTHING like I did 4 yrs ago,.
I could care less about Media characterizations and Lies~
Day 8 of trying to bid for a review of "Are You There God, Its Me Margaret" 😂😂
I was raised in NYC I don't need a movie to teach me Trump is a sack of shat and a historical national disgrace.
exactly my impressions as well, acting was phenomenal, all else was meh
Trump 2024
For jail.
exactly: 20-24 YEARS IN PRISON!
She’s trying to be technical on her review. The journey of the characters & the transformation is too paced. It doesn’t pace itself you see sudden changes in clunks until you see the Trump of today.
Will I obtain the same shape as you if I just climb trees?
How long ago did you transition?
Who could’ve thought Hollywood would make a one dimensional caricature of Trump? Not a Trump fan by any means but if a director absolutely despises and has no empathy for their lead character, I don’t see how you could make a compelling narrative or a good movie out of that.
It could be that Trump IS a one-dimensional caricature.
Not a Hollywood movie. typical American forgets that international and independent cinema exists
Sounds boring n could of been a tv show/series .
hmm. how do you make a villain more relateable if they don't have a soul to relate to?
… weak sauce!
This just comes off as bitterness.
actually i agree with the reviewer - yes trump is vile and corrupt - but we are all vile and corrupt, therefore trump is admirable and likeable, because he shows us that there's nothing wrong with being shit because everyone is shit! it's so inspirational. :)
The TDS is strong with this one.
Imagine having to study Trump long enough to pick up on his "subtle" mannerisms and then take on those repulsive characteristics as your own for a performance.
Imagine having to suffer through more of your vapid comments?
Many don’t find him repulsive. Even at the Al Smith dinner when Trump was talking about giving chuck schumer his first check decades ago (Chuck by all accounts and his own admission “hates” Trump the politician) they looked like old buddies reuniting. His interpersonal interactions seem to be very warm and positive and nothing like his interactions with the media or podium speeches. Studying a person like that would be impossible without getting to know him personally as his stage persona is completely different from his actual personality.
@@BB-ed4om Compare Trump's children and grandchildren to Biden's to see how "repulsive" he is. So sick of all these moral high ground morons thinking they're so pious.
@@BB-ed4om He's an insurrectionist traitor, fascist, adjudicated r a pist, best friend of Epstein, convicted felony fraudster, an unapologetic racist, and a senile manbaby. There are many reasons to find him repulsive.
You're one of those people that outsource all of your thinking to the crowd.
My hero! Reminds me of Batman.
Fake account
MAGA24!
hi..... pretty
I'm sure The Mafia was never related to him on this piece.
