I sing this brilliant song in a covers band and it always goes down fantastically well. Even people not into country music have to love it.

I just heard it for the first time a couple months ago and now I play it in the morning at least 1-4 time’s a week in my EarPods. The lyrics brought me back to being a 26 year old in New York City walking around after auditions, waiting for my bus at the main terminal. He nails, at least for me, that feeling of knowing you’re going to make it and at the same time being a spec in a huge city. While I don’t perform or audition anymore, this song is like a nice reminder of those days. I love it.

This is terrific. Larry's name should be a household name just for writing this song alone. An "American anthem" indeed.

This guy wrote Bend me Shape me too. A very different, but endearing song stylist.

I have read were an bring artist/songwriter who writes a massive hit song often will relate that the song wrote itself. It was a gift and they really don't know where it came from. A special conduit. Here Larry writes the majority of the song quickly yet struggles for weeks with two lines in a song. I think this song brought Glen back to the forefront of peoples minds. He was a great entertainer and would always bring a house down with his unbelievable guitar licks. A hero for me with that instrument. A gift that he still had even when all his other ways of communication were robbed by Alzheimer's.
But I just heard Larry's version a few minutes before I heard the story behind the song. I thought he had an admirable version of the song. But he couldn't beat the arrangement team of Lambert and Potter and a master song deliverer as Glen Campbell.

Would love him to be asked " how many royalties did you make off Glens massive hit? That would have been good.

Or when he said, "It took me awhile to get over it," I thought, yeah until the royalty checks started rolling in. I'll bet he got over it real quick.

Good interview. Where is the rest of it? Also the rest of Larry playing his song?
By the way, I've been a member of NSAI since 2002. Great organization for songwriters.

Yes, I too would have loved to hear Larry play the rest of the song. I actually don't enjoy the Glen Campbell version as it's too busy production-wise. cheers.

This song also ended one of Glen's marriages when his then-wife trashed it as "that stupid cowboy song".
Great songs will outlast the marriage every time!

Isn't it annoying when questioners cut people off at the most interesting point. "He was stuck on one particular passage...." What was it?????? These sort of things are invaluable to song-writers. Try and get the answer if you can.
