I was in the Marine Corps in Japan in 1986 when Tom came through with a bunch of others on a USO tour called The 1st Airborne Rock and Roll Division. Through a strange series of events, I ended up working stage crew. Tom was absolutely the coolest. He answered the stupid questions I had, and treated me- well, not as an equal, but with respect. He gave me advice on being a musician, and tolerated me being a fan. I continue to see them when I can, and hope to thank him one day.
Right. So many times you see artists that are getting old and it's hard to watch them perform. I know voices age, but some artists should just stop. The Doobie Brothers are one that defies that. They sound about 20 years younger than what they are. That's pretty rare.
This song reminds me of the happiest times in my life from being a kid. I play music and when I get frustrated and think there’s no use I play this song and remember what the magic of music feels like and it brings me right back to happiness.
*Anecdote: Played the tubs since I was 12. Used to practice nonstop without headphones, speakers blarin, back wall very near neighbor’s pad. I was about 16, went next door to ask if they could hear it much & to apologize if so. Tyran PORTER opened the door! 😂 I was shocked, he was baked, and cool as ice said, “Aw, NAWWW, *MANNN* ... I LOVE listenin to it! No WORRY!” and we had a great little chat. What a GREAT DUDE is one Tyran Porter! ✌️
Nice to know there are good people out there in show biz. So many jerks get all the headlines that it's easy to forget most of them are probably decent folks.
We owe so much to the brilliant artists of our generation. And I'm especially grateful for bands like The Doobie Brothers who've faithfully conserved enough energy to produce shows that knockout every generation since their debut. 50 years. Incredible. I'm so thankful.
they were a big part of my youth through he '70's. their music helped me get through the yard work, chores, drives, homework, whatever hum-drum day I was having was lifted up hearing their music. I recall diving to mass alone (Mom made me go when I would finally wake up on a Sunday morning - I'd usually go get high somewhere and crank the tunes for an hour, but this time it was different) As I was driving towards church, I was cranking the greatest rock station I knew of... KGB FM 101.5 in San Diego. The tune "Jesus is just alright with me" came on... it got me through church, as I was singing it to myself the entire mass.I wanted so badly to jump up, run to the alter, climb on top and start singing it as loud as I could. Right there, about 17 years old, I realized music was my church, my healing, my confidant, my freedom, my forgiver! I use to daydream about the lyric's meaning and imagine a different world where love reigned. To this day, even at 51, I fully embrace their songs each and every time I hear, play or teach one. Thanks Doobies! besides... it was the best band name anyone could every come up with!
I saw the Doobie Brothers in concert in Savannah, Georgia 1973 and that song was still riding high on the charts. I still have the album Toulouse Street the song is on. They had two drummers then also. Great song. Always been my favorite.
I have always been BIG into music. The Doobie Brothers were my favorite for many years. When they came to Central Michigan University in 1976 or 77 I waited in line for almost three days in cold winter weather to get tickets for my little brother and sister, and me. It was worth it!!! In fact my little brother became even a more avid fan than me and has seen them throughout the past 40+ years all over the country he and his wife have "stalked" them (LOL)! This song, "Listen to the Music" I have planned to use at the very beginning of my funeral as the words introduce what I plan to do at my funeral - to make it a time of mostly music. Music that tells a story about my life so by using this song as the intro it will encourage my friends and relatives to listen to the (words of the) music as that will tell the story of my life here on earth until the Lord Jesus Christ welcomes me Home to be with Him and there to see my wife again❣💘❣
Summer days with endless blue skies, as a kid, in cut off jeans shorts, swimming, riding my bike, riding in the car with my mom, getting lost on purpose, with the windows downs... This song is a magic portal, where i can still see this clear as day, i can feel it like it was yesterday, beautiful
With the Doobies since '72 - THE Greatest EVER American BAND!! AND They remain one of the most brilliant band of guitarists. Live or Studio, perfection!! You KNOW when a Band is Special - when they feel like FAMILY!! (Fantastic Video Top2000AGogo!!)
My first album Ever!!! This is still my "Happy Song" still play it every single day!! Thank you Doobie Brothers!! You are Classic Artist Perfection!!! I LOVE YOU!!!!
When they emerged onto the music scene they quickly became my favorite band and they are to this day...can't sit still listening to these boys :) FINALLY Hall of Fame for these guys!!!!!!!!!!!
@@Mo_Ketchups During this video I was thinking of how great it is to have two drummers for some things. You can't get two drummers' worth of sound from one drummer. That's the choice.
To bad ReRun messed up the concert at the school. Thanks to What's Happening I learned about this band when I was a kid in the '70s. Always fun music to listen to.
They were here in Kansas several years and I got to see them. The memories are flooding in! They do it so effortlessly, as they should. They've been doing it forever! Love these guys!
They were my first Rock n Roll concert as a newly divorced gal. After being forced to listen to Country for 5 years...this was exciting...and definitely more my style! Great job Doobie Brothers!!
Always preferred the Doobies to the Eagles, and I like the stories Tommy tells about writing the songs. Tiran was the epitome of cool and was talented, funny and great. Patrick is the songwriter who came up with Black Water and it was a huge hit. A personal favourite is South City Midnight Lady. Tommy is the voice of the band with Patrick in fine support, Michael was always going to be a star but for him the band was more of a launch pad, to which he repayed with Kenny Loggins on What A Fool Believes. Jeff came from Steely Dan and gave them a boost but when they reunited in 87 they did it with the right people. Rest In Peace: All the Absent.
I ordered a TSHIRT from The Captains Vintage an old Doobie Brothers TSHIRT of their logo with the Eagle and its wings spread out... Its worn out and faded and been around for a long time and I LOVE IT! I wear it with a lot of my skirts especially in summer time. I wear a full face of my makeup (I love makeup and I love putting it on) and this beat up old Doobie Brothers TShirt. love their music.
There should be a movement...along with Rock Hall Inductions...of Rock Hall Abductions...Because some who are in it, don't deserve it. Congrats on Doobies finally given the recognition they deserve!

FINALLY MADE IT INTO THE HALL OF FAME...……….WHAT TOOK TOO LONG? One of my favorite bands, but my favorite songs are WHAT A FOOL BELIEVES & ANOTHER PARK, ANOTHER SUNDAY, both have special meanings to me, to this day. Too bad we can't go back in time. My life would be so different if I could go back to '76. What year for you? Saw them twice; one at the '79 Chicago Fest, they were really jamming and saw them again for my b-day in '96 at the STAR THEATER located inside the RADISSON HOTEL in Merrillville, IN. The theater hosted many top name bands from the time it was built in '79. The hotel was fabulous, but was disappointed in what I thought was going to be a great rocking and rolling, dance to the music concert, but THE DOOBIES did an acoustic show instead. The hotel and adjoining twin towers office complexes were demolished in '17. Didn't make sense to me, since it was privately owned.
A house I was living in had a forced air heating system that had the exact sound that you hear (low in the mix) during the verses. Whenever I was listening to this song, I would look at the thermostat to make sure the heater wasn’t running. I wonder what instrument made that sound. It doesn’t change pitch, so it is easy to identify.
I'm not a humongous doobie doobie Brothers fan but they did have some good songs a few and my favorite of theirs if I'm going to pick one this is a good song but I'm going to say my personal favorite was actually""" Jesus is just alright with"""
How well do I know the original DB's? Hossock, Porter, Johnston, Simmons, Hartman and then they added Bobby LaKind. I've seen them 5 times from 1973 to 2017. Love their music, American easy rock.
These dudes are 70+ years old and look and sound amazing... The power of the Doobie :)
The doobie is a powerful thing!
They sound way much better than many of todays teenager groups 👏👏👏
Thanks and best wishes! 💖💖💖

Blown away at how great the band still sound live! Amazing.
I'm blown away by the rampant use of Just For Men® The 5 Minute Hair Coloring System®
Tom Henderson
I saw them this summer with Steely Dan. Both bands still bring it.
How many are actually original members?
@@SmithMrCorona 🤣
@@AllenPendleton Tommy and Pat. Their original bass player quit after their 1st album. John Hartman quit the band around 1993.
Johnston will always be the sound of the Doobies for me . This song is one of the best ever written.
Tom Johnston’s voice is still so strong , and they harmonize beautifully.
Gorgeous singing as well as speaking voice. He should do an audiobook.

Congrats, Doobs, on gettin' in the Rock Hall of Fame!
They must be in their 70s now. Incredible how they can still look and sound the same 45 years on.
My 5 years old daughter love this song. Ive been playing this in car tape for last one year.

Still sounds bloody amazing. Black Water forever!
'bloody'...lol
Some of the finest recordings EVER!
They were my first concert . Saw them around 1976 . They still sound amazing
Im a 90's kid. Never grew up hearing this song....but everytime i hear it i get this weird nostalgic/sentimental feeling....
I lost count how many times i danced to this when it came out
Black Water is still my favorite Doobie Brothers song.
Being from Texas, China Grove was always my favorite but I love all their music.
Fun fact: Black Water written by Pat Simmons, What a fool believes by Michael McDonald - poor Tommy Johnston
I was lucky enough to see them live. They were great
Their harmonies are the best! Hall of fame soon I hope
Feel good music for sure ... always made me dance !
This song touched me in a very special way....a feeling like blues but happy.
One of my first concerts in high school. Great band.
Hey Doobie person! Your concert in Nebraska with Boston was one of the better days in my recent life! Front row seats and worth every penny!
Tom Johnston's looking super fit here!
LOVE the Doobs...and they hail from my area...Loma Prieta, my mountain home, on the hills above Santa Cruz...happy music...💗💗💗
Saw 'em on Long Island, 2012...AMAZING. So much power, energy and the people were into it, including me! Rock on, fellas.

Why aren't The Doobies in the Rock Hall of Shame ? They deserve induction . We need a Petition Drive .
Because they're dignified
Dave Brewer ...
They just don’t need to induct the #2 drummer is all. W this band especially, I never understood the choice.
Your prayers have been answered and it’s long overdue!

What a classic song.
Life long Doobie fan who still misses Tiran Porter! And at least we get to see a glimpse of John Cowan at the very end!
Never seen them live, but what a great band!
What showmanship. Artists: Take notes. 🏆🏆🏆
Love the Skunk in those old clips.

I love listening to their music :D
An incccccreeeeedible tune!
My step dad would listen to them all the time.. weather we wanted to hear them are not. Grew to love them also
The opening groove is awesome, if that doesn’t get your foot tappin or your body moving, nothing will
Glad Tom is clean and back making music with his band again.
Forever awesome 🎵🎶
yep! and when he said he was naive about thinking of getting world leaders together to get high and dance to music... almost brought tears to my eyes.
