I like to imagine the start of the song as taking place in a dark, snowy forest in Ontario, where you're hiding behind a large maple tree. Your wounds sting in the freezing wind, but you grit your teeth in an attempt to stay quiet and undetected. But what's that noise? Is that.... the Canadian national anthem? As the patriotic tune grows in volume, you hear footsteps crunching in the snow somewhere nearby. Your heart feels like it's going to beat out of your chest, and you struggle to control your breathing in your panic. Suddenly, you see him coming towards you, wielding an axe that's dripping blood into the pure white snow. It's Ed Robertson, the lead singer of the hit rock band "Barenaked Ladies." And he's ready to laugh at your funeral.

can we appreciate that neil left in the breathing after each line at 3:33, really selling the fact that he's saying "harrison ford" (even though he isnt). brilliant
that's because a lot of songs, pop songs in particular, that follow the same structure and usage of 4/4 time. so once you account for tempo differences, it'd be extremely easy to splice them together. the real challenge is making something catchy and unique with it, which cicierga does way too damn well.
4/4 time matching isn't enough in a lot of cases the structure of the song needs to somewhat match too (i.e. having the chorus come on at the same time after matching the tempo)

*IT'S BEEN* 5 seconds since I've listened to this song. The withdrawal is already setting in. Better listen to it again.
I haven't laughed so hard since last time I've been to a funeral.
Astute Anansi The first time I read this comment I was like "oh ha ha, edgy humor, whatever," and now that I get the joke in the last line I'm kicking myself for not liking this sooner.

@@MyoticTesseract This is literally the perfect response to my reply. Marry me.
can we appreciate that neil left in the breathing after each line at 3:33, really selling the fact that he's saying "harrison ford" (even though he isnt). brilliant
Already album of the year wow fuck
These albums are like a musical form of pop art. Andy Warhol would have been proud.
I really wish Andy Warhol had lived to see the birth of the internet, I bet he could have done a lot of creative things with it
Like musical graffiti

@@CGFillertextAndy Warhol did some of the first ever computer art! He totally got it. His paintings are totally proto memes as well
So glad this masterpiece isn't soundcloud only any more. O Canada catches me off guard every time.
This is genuinely a good piece of music that stands on its own.
I'm going to make it my mission to be able to know the lyrics in one go.

that's because a lot of songs, pop songs in particular, that follow the same structure and usage of 4/4 time. so once you account for tempo differences, it'd be extremely easy to splice them together. the real challenge is making something catchy and unique with it, which cicierga does way too damn well.
4/4 time matching isn't enough in a lot of cases
the structure of the song needs to somewhat match too (i.e. having the chorus come on at the same time after matching the tempo)
guys help, i just watched "bustin" and i can tell I'm not gonna stop until i listen to all his songs again
"this is the musical equivalent of getting on a rollercoaster before it shoots off backwards"
They should make one that plays this song.
Wow Wow is when it does that, then abruptly accelerates into the right direction again.
ive been listening to neil since a preteen and im over 30. and i was still today years old when i heard this. WHY DOES THIS SLAP SO HARD.

Anyone else, after all these years, just notice that Larry King is reflected in Neil's glasses?

The O Canada with heavy breathing and a heartbeat at the beginning causes some sort of fight or flight response for me.

I CAN'T FUCKING LISTEN TO ONE WEEK ANYMORE IT WORKS SO MUCH BETTER WITH SMOOTH CRIMINAL
Oh my god, how have not realised this
The Canadian National Anthem plays in the beginning which leads into “One Week” which is by One of the most famous Canadian bands Barenaked Ladies
Every single time i listen to this, o-canada throws me for a complete loop. Every, fucking, time
This man added chicken, ice cream, harrison ford, making love and more and still managed to make this an banger?

Not all heroes have a history of losing their shirt.

Not all heroes laugh at a funeral.

Brave of you to assume Neil doesn't.
3:29 until the end of the song is probably my favorite part in the entire album
I cant listen to this song while i drive anymore because one of these days im gonna wreck my car rocking the fuck out to this song
I think Neil Cicierega is a God that has the capacity to be vengeful, and that vengeance is overshadowed only by sheer apathy
He took three songs I have no desire to ever hear again and made me want to beat it over and over again

Its because of this smooth criminal's intro sounds empty without the oh canada and "IT'S BEEN-" to me

As a Michael Jackson fan, this is one of a very few remixes, or whatever it is called, that I reeeeeeally like, because it respects the original tempo of the song
The original tempo of Smooth Criminal, perhaps. Not so much of One Week....
Say what you want about Harrison Ford, but he really does give me some kind of emotion.
2:45 when your friend Ben walks in the room
The end of this song painted a picture in my head.. Rob Thomas trying to sing Smooth in the regular video with Neil just poppin up behind him randomly shouting "HARRISON FORD" and I'm cackling over this shit.
As a Canadian, the start of this sent me backwards in fear

what an amazing thought
What a concept
I actually think the lyrics from One Week fit better with the instrumental of Smooth Criminal, almost better than the lyrics to Smooth Criminal
