    This mission is a great example of showing instead of telling. You know Mengsk is kind of broke when he can't field battle cruisers and has to utilize special forces. Altanis throws everything Protoss have, and UED is all about their fleet. It's common for this kind of missions to give every AI character by composition but this is especially good as they're not like "I only make infantry, destroy me with AOE"

    The opening chat for this mission is both iconic, and hilariously weird: They absolutely have to establish who these enemies you're fighting are, there really isn't a better way to do it, so I respect why the scene is like it is, but watching Arcturus, Artanis, and Dugalle jump in on Kerrigan's private phone call with the cerebrate is kind of hilarious.

    This mission seems to be one of the only ones in Mass Recall that the 'additional heroes' option makes the mission far harder. You get kerrigan, who if she dies you lose. Enemies will sacrifice science vessals to irradiate her in the middle of your base, and she'll get targetted down first. The protoss gets Artanis in a super mothership with Planetcracker, and the terrans each get a super battlecruiser. They can't be killed, respawning after a few seconds, forcing you to clear out the main base areas last so you only need to kill them 2-3 times. They'll also join random attack waves sometimes.

  • @Evan-mt7bc
    @Evan-mt7bc 2 года назад +33

    God this mission is just so good, it really feels like an incredible way to end the game All the previous characters you played as and alongside, you built them up with your own 2 hands, you controlled them as they were betrayed by Kerrigan and now by those same hands you have to murder them all and it starts off with 25 minutes of hell being attacked by 3 incredibly powerful enemies in an extremely exposed position, crawling your way out of your base and all of a sudden just controlling half the map finishing off with an incredible victory lap of cleaning up the remainder commanders. Every other mission always puts your starting position in a corner, both Starcraft 1 and 2, it's a safe haven with predictable attack paths but here you're thrown into the heat of battle with no comfort, or illusion of safety, your only solace is absolute domination. The mission really makes you feel like how Kerrigan is supposed to feel as a character and it's beautifully communicated through gameplay. In my opinion this is the ultimate final Starcraft mission in the entire series both in the sense of the Zerg campaign finale and the Starcraft 1 capstone.
    I think my only gripe with this mission is that it features 2 Terran and 1 Protoss, narratively it makes perfect sense but gameplay wise I wish it was 1 Terran, 1 Zerg and 1 Protoss just to truly give that feeling of total domination over all 3 races, playable wise Mengsk really feels like the oddball in this mission where he feels the most gimped. I don't know how popular of a mission this is to recreate and mod but replacing him with a Zerg opponent would probably make for an incredible mission. But again, this mission is honestly perfect from it's opening to the enemy surrender quotes it hits everything you want it to hit, it's so good.

      @@SittingOnEdgeman That would nullify the To Kill a Beast mission though as once the Overmind truly died the only remaining cerebrates are those under Kerrigan's control. Basically the reason there is no Zerg enemy in this final mission is because Kerrigan finished cleaning her house in the missions leading up to it so having a Zerg enemy here would nullify all those missions leading up to this one.
      The only way to add a Zerg opponent here in a way that makes a modicum of sense is to bring Samir Duran in with some Zerg that followed him, not knowing he betrayed Kerrigan. However Duran has no qualm with Kerrigan and isn't trying to kill her so him being here wouldn't have made much sense either. Basically the mission is perfect as is with 2 Terran and 1 Protoss considering how all 3 campaigns lead up to this point.

      I'm the guy who balanced this map. I intentionally made the start the most challenging moment in the series, then I worried it would make the cleanup phase feel tame in comparison, but testing showed that it rather was the opposite. You get bullied so hard in the first part that pulverizing the rest of your enemies is just sweet revenge. It also fit really well narratively: the Zerg are caught off guard and it looks like the Allies could almost pull it off, but then they don't and you get a roaring rampage of conquering Zerg who re-establish dominance for good. Most of the credit goes to the Blizzard designers, of course, but I am super happy to still read, a decade later, that we nailed the atmosphere on this one.

This notion was than reinforced by being the prized pupil of the Overmind who controlled all Zerg initially and fought tooth and nail to keep is so when the Terrans tried to interfere. What will she do after? I don't know, what does any other character do after? Dark swarm removes damage from single target projectiles.
    It doesn't protect troops from siege tanks aoe, lurker aoe and reaver aoe.
    However, since reavers are broken in this mod, it causes a lot of issues and works like that only half the time.
    Nevertheless, the supposed mechanic is single target protection.

    You definitely played through the best way in the original Brood War, hitting Artanis, Dugalle, then Mengsk, as Artanis gets an insane DArchon/Reaver/Carrier count if allowed to max. However it's a great time turtling with Lurker/Hydra/a million spore colonies, then rushing Guardians/Devourers to hit Mengsk with a Air Zerg death ball. From there I go Infested Terran against the Protoss. People seldom use these three units, as they arent seen in multiplayer but they're incredibly strong in campaign.

    4:33 Interesting! I always save protoss for last *because* they're such a pain in the butt.
    I go Mengsk -> UED -> Protoss.
    Maybe mass recall changes this but Mengsk is really easy to sweep with minimal losses with guardian + muta.
    After that, the additional gas his base provides lets me just pump out ultras like there's no tomorrow and I rush the bulk of UED's production as well as eliminate any tanks or fbats, and then send in wave after wave of lings and hydras. to mop up production structures.
    Then, finally, with practically unlimited money I just throw an endless wave of ultras, hydras, and overlords at the protoss. I attack from both main sides so there's no real possibility of a counterattack, meaning I can use all available supply (minus drones) to attack.

    This is a random question, but I want to ask it: what exactly gives a unit detection? Like, I mean lore wise, what is the technology? And how do, for example, spore colonies/crawlers and overlords have detection?

    • @Protolisk
      @Protolisk 2 года назад +1

      I don't have an exact lore answer, but, some hypotheses.
      Queen's Parasite gives vision in addition to detection, so it is likely an ocular parasite that also can detect movements more accurately. If not, they and Overlords might just be so highly psionically sensitive that they can detect the minds of other creatures. This mostly makes sense for Overlords, as they are basically flying brains with cargo space. Since they canonically are how a overmind/cerebrate/queen of blades/broodmother subdivision their commands, they are already fairly psychically powerful to relay those commands. Wraith pilots, Ghosts, Dark Templar, and burrowed Zerg all should have a detectable mind. This is also built upon in that the Cerebrates and Overmind(s) themselves are also detectors.
      But then there are spider mines and Observers, though. And to cap it off, the Arbiter makes any unit cloaked, meaning that there must be something else going on.
      Machines like Missile Turrets, Science Vessels, Observers, possibly have equipment that detects motion, even micro movements, to detect burrowed but breathing zerg and the subtle light shifting of cloaked units. Maybe they are also psionically sensitive technology, like how Khydarin crystals are, which is possibly how Observers and Photon Cannons work, but this still leaves spider mines.
      Since we could surmise that units like spidermines just do not move once burrowed due to not needing to breathe, this points me to more grounded technology. Like radar, some sort of radiation effect is likely at play, or like how a metal detector detects metal. Electromagnetism. This could still be a device just like a real metal detector, but for the organic sources this may still be possible. Birds on Earth can supposedly see magnetic fields, which is how they know where north vs south is during migration, among other things. So this one is possible, somehow detecting electromagnetic radiation. It would work for both sources (technology and organic)and possibly the targets (living, moving, still, non-living). Since birds literally see these fields through special proteins in their eyes, and we have these vision granting Parasite (where in SC2 the symbol looks like an eye), the SC2 advanced eyeballs that are Overseers, and the Overmind literally being a giant eye... again, none of this is spelled out in the lore, but this seems like an easy headcanon to make here.
      Any single one, or combination thereof, of any of the above is as likely, because so far our best in-game answer is "its a game mechanic, don't think about it."
